  • CyanogenMod 10.1 Milestone 1 hits Nexus and Samsung devices

Despite all the nightly builds of CyanogenMod 10.1, there hasn't been much of anything definitive to hang our hats on. There's at last some sense of reliability now that Milestone 1 versions have hit the servers. Most Nexus devices, as well as swaths of Samsung's Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab 2 ranges, can get the unofficial Android 4.2 build for themselves. The M1 code is deemed "mostly stable" and good enough for daily use, although that's relative -- it's not yet to the level of a fully stable build, let alone factory firmware. If you only needed fewer risks than before, though, the downloads and details await at the source links. [Thanks, Rashid]

  • Lost Planet 3 coming in 2013 from Spark Unlimited

The proverbial lid on Capcom's annual Captivate news has lifted over the past 12 hours, with trailers for Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 6, and now, Lost Planet 3 surfacing. Wait, that last one's not an announced game! Hot dog! Spark Unlimited (Legendary, Call of Duty: Finest Hour) is putting together a third Lost Planet for Capcom, heading to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in "early 2013." It seems Spark is ditching the sultry locales of Lost Planet 2 for the frozen wastelands of the first game, at least as far as this trailer is concerned. It also seems there'll be some sort of a giant storm to deal with during your return trip to Capcom's misplaced orb. Expect a full, "official" announcement from sooner rather than later.%Gallery-152818%

  • Resident Evil 6 gets new October 2 release date in leaked trailer

What happens when you have a big ol' press event in Italy? Apparently, you get Resident Evil 6 trailers with Italian subtitles. This latest trailer pushes up Resident Evil 6's release date from November 20 to October 2.In case you're in a situation that prevents streaming video, you should also know that the third protagonist (aka "the man who's told to save the world") is Albert Wesker's son. The trailer is rife with high-level RE drama, ending on a standoff between the perfectly coiffed Leon S. Kennedy and the significantly gruffer Chris Redfield. And no, there aren't any zombie presidents in this one. Not a single one.%Gallery-152819%

  • AT&T confirms Gingerbread coming to entire 2011 Android lineup (and Samsung Captivate)

The HTC Status was the only device with Gingerbread on AT&T's lineup for a small slice of time, but that's quickly coming to an end. The carrier has confirmed that Android 2.3 will be pushed to its entire 2011 postpaid lineup, beginning with an OTA rollout of the Motorola Atrix 4G today (though and the HTC Inspire 4G "in the coming weeks." In addition to the phones released this year, Samsung Captivate users will be able to enjoy the upgrade as well. There's no hard details on the timing for everyone else, but at least anyone with a 2011 model can breath a sigh of relief. Full press release can be found after the break.

  • Select AT&T Android devices may get app sideloading as early as today

It's a classic romantic tale of "network meets OS, network disables OS," and just like any love story, this one is building up to a happy ending. Fourteen months after AT&T introduced a lineup of crippled Android phones that weren't allowed to install third-party apps, the carrier extended an olive branch to fans of the OS by quietly slipping the sideloading capability onto the Samsung Infuse 4G; now, the network is reportedly updating three members of its Android lineup -- the HTC Inspire 4G, HTC Aria, and Samsung Captivate -- sometime today. We're sure there were many Atrix users scanning this short list with fingers crossed, but unfortunately your phone did not make the cut this time. No word on why your favs were left out, but at least four devices with Amazon Appstore access is still better than zero. At present time we haven't seen the updates get pushed to our phones, however, so we'd love to hear if any of you have seen differently down in comments below.

One false alarm is bad enough, but two would be positively evil, wouldn't it? We're cautiously optimistic that Samsung and AT&T are serious this time about posting the Captivate's update to Android 2.2 starting tomorrow, another step in Sammy's long, drawn-out road to getting all of its promised Galaxy S upgrades out the door. We're sure owners are going to appreciate some of the simple pleasures in life that Froyo (and Gingerbread) owners have come to take for granted like being able to move apps to external storage... and it's all just hours away. Can you feel the excitement? Update: in an official Facebook video just posted, AT&T mentions that it's already in the process of testing a Froyo upgrade for the HTC Aria as well -- and it should be coming "very soon."

It took about two months for Samsung to roll out the much-needed GPS fix for the Captivate, and now, a mere seven months after Google pulled a handle on the machine and twirled up a big cone of Froyo, that phone is finally getting a spoonful. Samsung has released an Android 2.2 update and the full instructions plus the download are on the other end of the source link below. Hopefully it isn't too frostbitten after all this time. Update: Well now, we've just received a flurry of tips indicating that it's been pulled and, indeed, the page on the other end of the source link is now gone. We'll try to figure out what went wrong here. [Thanks, Andy]

Never underestimate the power of Dreamcast to live on long past its intended expiration date (which, if you ask Sega, would have been around September 2007). The final flagship console from the Haus of Sonic is survived by a multitude of emulators propagating across a multitude of platforms... and well, here's another. Drk||Raziel has posted some videos showcasing the work in progress of nullDCe for Android (on what we make out to be a AT&T Samsung Captivate). The footage ranges from buggy (Soul Calibur) to pretty smooth (Crazy Taxi), but again, no one's calling this a finished product. See it for yourself after the break.

  • Canada's Galaxy S Froyo updates start rolling out this month

Samsung's probably wishing it could just forget its claim that it'd have Froyo rolled out to all carriers last month, but at least it's providing a little bit of updated guidance to its Canadian users. Turns out Bell's Vibrant and Rogers' Captivate are on track for the middle of this month, while owners of Telus' Fascinate will need to wait a little longer: "early 2011," to be exact, which really isn't exact at all since it could easily mean anywhere between January and, say, April or so. Of course, Gingerbread will be all over the place by then -- and we might even be seeing our first glimpses of Honeycomb -- so be prepared for your version envy to continue unabated. [Thanks, Seb]

  • Samsung ships 3M Galaxy S devices in the US, becomes top Android supplier in the country

You know what happens when you manage to launch essentially the same high-end smartphone on every national carrier in the US plus the top regional? Well, this happens: Samsung has just proudly announced that it's pushed some three million Galaxy S models in the US -- sold as the Fascinate, Captivate, Epic 4G, Vibrant, and Mesmerize on Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular, respectively -- which gave it 32.1 percent of the US Android market in the third quarter according to Gartner, enough to vault it to the number one position. When your competitors are HTC and Motorola -- both of whom have knocked some Android phones out of the park this year -- that's pretty impressive. Follow the break for the full press release.

  • Samsung releases 'GPS Restore' app for Captivate and other Galaxy S models

    11.30.2010

Seems Samsung still hasn't solved the GPS woes on many of its Galaxy S models to the satisfaction of every user -- complaints of inordinately long (or impossible) lock times continue to trickle into our inbox to this very day. To that end, folks might be interested in the news that Samsung Mobile is tweeting about a "GPS Restore Application" that it's thrown together for wiping the GPS subsystem and making it factory-fresh. Now, we'll be the first to admit -- we don't quite understand how "restoring" a screwed-up GPS to its original screwed-up state is doing any good, but we'll leave it to Sammy's confusing verbiage: "During online surveillance, there is an abundance of GPS tweaks that impair GPS performance. Often times, no backup is performed to restore values prior to modifications. Samsung has released an application that restores GPS settings to recommended factory defaults for optinum [sic] performance." Right, then. It's only compatible with the Captivate and Vibrant at the moment -- no word on others like the Epic 4G, Mesmerize, or Fascinate, but folks on AT&T and T-Mobile should be able to nab it from the Market.

Shock of all horrors, Samsung and Giorgio Armani have teamed up yet again to produce a specially endorsed handset for the fashion-conscious public. The fun thing about this oh-so-exclusive piece of Armani luxury is that it looks remarkably (read: exactly) like the AT&T Captivate that Americans have had the pleasure of using for a good few of months now. We're hearing there's some extra multimedia bundled in along with the GA brand name, so we're absolutely positive your €700 will be well spent. If you're not yet convinced, how's about an unboxing video after the break? [Thanks, Gianluca]

While its Windows Phone 7 devices are still on deck, owners of several Android models (Samsung Captivate(TM), HTC Aria, and soon the Motorola BRAVO™ and Motorola FLIPSIDE) and the Blackberry Curve 3G should have access to the U-verse Mobile apps iPhone (& Blackberry Torch) owners have been enjoying beginning today. Remote scheduling and downloads of select TV shows are the key features to look out for. The usual restrictions apply, requiring the U300 service package or higher for downloads while all the other features are available for all customers, but otherwise just keep an eye on the Market or App World to see when they pop up. Full details are in the press releases after the break.

    10.02.2010

Now that your AT&T-locked Samsung Galaxy S can occasionally find satellites, you're probably hoping that the carrier kicks out some creamy Froyo as well, and it looks like that day isn't far away -- an unofficial but seemingly feature-complete Android 2.2 build is available for the Captivate right now. The faithful fiends at xda-developers have got build UCJI6 ready for download, which brings a mobile hotspot, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, the JIT compiler, Media Hub support, and a host of UI tweaks to boot. Instructions are available at the links below to walk you through the process, assuming you've already got root, have backed up all your files and are willing to take the risks in case this leaked build isn't as official as it seems. See a video walkthrough of the new software right after the break. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

    09.23.2010

We've got a two-pack of bad news for Rogers customers today (at least, it's bad news if you were planning on upgrading your phone in the next few days). Both the BlackBerry Torch and Samsung's Galaxy S-based Captivate have been delayed for you guys, though the Torch will be coming around in just a few days' time -- September 30, to be exact -- while the Captivate's fighting a "manufacturing delay" and isn't expected now until mid-October. Interestingly, the Captivate seems to be in ample supply for AT&T, so... you know what kinds of subscribers to fight if you see them wandering around today, Canadians. [Thanks, Rick]

  • Samsung Captivate gets GPS fix, other Galaxy S versions wait patiently

    Chris Ziegler
    09.22.2010

Sammy just hit us up with a brief statement that should make Captivate owners jump clean out of their seats and do a spit take if they're enjoying a cup of joe: "An update to improve the Samsung Captivate's GPS performance is now available. Captivate customers will receive a notification on their device that an update is available and will simply need to download the file to update their phone. The updates will be pushed to customers' devices over the next few weeks. The update for the Captivate will also improve additional device functions, such as media scanning time, add the full version of Quickoffice and address Microsoft Exchange 2003 policy support." Awesome, right? Of course, the proof is in the pudding -- we'll need to wait and see how "fixed" the GPS really is after this gets installed, but it's a start. Notably, this doesn't seem to include Froyo, so we don't know whether these guys are going to be going the British or Spanish routes in getting that deployed. Update: We've independently confirmed with AT&T that this update does include GPS improvements.

  • AmazonWireless selling Samsung Captivate for a penny on contract

    08.24.2010

This already happened to the Vibrant, but if you're in the market for a Galaxy S of one sort or another and you're more of the AT&T type (and you can't be bothered to do a little hacking), you might want to take a look at Amazon's mobile store right now where they've got the Captivate listed for a big, fat cent on a new two-year contract. Of course, Amazon (and other third-party wireless retailers) pull these stunts all the time -- and considering that AT&T is still charging $200 upfront for this thing, we love 'em for it.
