Eight months on from Joystiq's last stream of Dungeon Defenders 2, Trendy Entertainment is finally ready to unleash its crafty blend of co-op role-playing and tower defense on the public. Months of testing, tweaking, and tally-ho-ing into battle has hopefully worked out the kinks since our last session. How has the game shaped up? With three days to go before the game's official release on Steam, Joystiq's Alexander Sliwinski (@Sliwinski), Richard Mitchell (@TheRichardM), and Sinan Kubba (@SinanKubba) team up to find out. The crew from Trendy Entertainment will also be on hand to walk us through what's changed. Dungeon Defenders 2 hits Joystiq Streams at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Join us! Dig the stream? The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have, for all their technological advancements, returned the gaming world to a place few expected it would go: the land for the down port. Way back when, PC and arcade games too beefy for consoles would be adapted to run on older, less capable machines, hence why you'd end up with a version of Double Dragon on Commodore 64 that looks like it's made of wood chips or Atari Donkey Kong. With games coming to both Xbox One and PS4 as well as their predecessors, Xbox 360 and PS3, the art of the down port has come back to the fore. The question, then: What happens to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, so reliant on its processor-pushing Nemesis system, when it's crammed into the nearly decade-old Xbox 360? Let's find out! Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, we'll be playing the Xbox 360 version of Shadow or Mordor to see how it stacks up to the current gen version. Join us ahead of time for a bonus stream of Geometry Wars 3 and some pre-show banter! [Images: WBIE]

Perhaps you heard: We put together a Humble Bundle! Joystiq and the merry Humble crew assembled a selection of delicious games and began selling them for a shockingly low price, with proceeds going to the developers, Humble, and the absolutely wonderful organization known as AbleGamers. (If you're unfamiliar with AbleGamers, we recently spotlighted their work here.) Some awesome games populate the bundle: Costume Quest 2, Slender: The Arrival, The Dream Machine, and Primal Carnage to name a few. With two days left to pick up the bundle, we're celebrating the event by streaming a bunch of them from 2:30PM to 5:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Watching us play games is cool and all, but what do you get out of it? Free games! We'll be doling out free bundles as we stream so tune in to get in on it. Captain Falcon had opened a chain of family eateries. Kirby was working on Pink on the Outside, a treacly memoir that wasn't going anywhere. Link and Zelda were waiting on production for their next project, but feeling anxious and lost. Samus was looking into starring in a Quentin Tarantino picture to revitalize her post-Other M image, but development was slow. They all needed relief. Something new. Something to smash. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is here to give Nintendo's icons the focused release they've been longing for, in glorious high definition. Finally: a moment of clarity to knock someone in the jaw so hard they fly into the horizon. Join us as we stream the retail version of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. We'll take a walk through the Wii U version's features, from the Smash Board board game, to stage creation, to 8-player brawl-downs. [Images: Nintendo]

    11.18.2014

The Joystiq that inquisits together, stays together! This maxim is undeniable as a fearless band of adventurers shall prove on today's Joystiq Streams. Last week, Alexander Sliwinski (@sliwinski) gave viewers a guided tour of Dragon Age: Inquisition's first hour, but it was a lonesome affair. This week, he'll have friends with him as Susan Arendt (@susanarendt), Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello), and Richard Mitchell (@TheRichardM) join him in exploring Inquisition's standalone multiplayer game. All the Dragon Age: Inquisition glory goes down at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, just as it does every Tuesday and Thursday. • Joystiq Streams: A mile in Grand Theft Auto 5 PS4's shoes

    11.17.2014

We knew it was coming. Of course it was coming. As soon as Rockstar said that Grand Theft Auto 5 would be coming exclusively to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, the writing was on the wall. The very face of sandbox gaming would blow out the final days of last gen's consoles and be reborn in ample time on the coming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Maybe it was a little surprising to see it announced at E3 2014, not even a full year after its initial release, but there was never any doubt that Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online would come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. What was surprising, however, was the announcement that this version of the game would officially support a first-person mode. Modders plopped it into the game last summer, but now Rockstar's built it in properly. What does Los Santos look like up close and personal? Find out when we stream Grand Theft Auto 5 for PlayStation 4 at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Joystiq Streams airs live every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, but if you want to catch other streams like this one make sure to follow us on Twitch. [Images: Rockstar]

  • Joystiq Streams: Expect Dragon Age: Inquisition

    by
    Anthony John Agnello
    Anthony John Agnello
    11.13.2014

"Dragon Age: Inquisition is an immense fantasy epic, a sprawling adventure across the many landscapes of Thedas, unapologetically mature in its exploration of politics and brazen in its combat," says Joystiq's Alexander Sliwinski in his 5-star review of BioWare's first RPG for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. "Inquisition is also developer BioWare's redemption song. It's everything that a sequel to Dragon Age: Origins should have been, and time will slip by as players enjoy the hundred hours of escapades it delivers." Powerful words about an RPG from a studio that hit a serious rough patch after 2009's Origins, but seeing is believing. Does Dragon Age: Inquisition really deliver all that and more as Alexander says it does? He'll take us on a guided tour of the game starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, but sometimes we just get the itch to play. On Friday? We'll be playing the new Mario Kart 8 DLC. At what time? Follow us on Twitch to find out. [Images: Electronic Arts]

  • Joystiq Streams: The history of shooting in Bedlam, plus free games

    11.11.2014

After a week straight of Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Joystiq Streams, we've been thinking seriously about the land of first-person shooters. With our palate overwhelmed by Microsoft's genre-defining series, we find ourselves in need of something stranger. Something a little bit different. So we'll be playing Bedlam, a dollop of science fiction weirdness based on a novel by Chris Brookmyre (@cbrookmyre) and developed by RedBedLam. We'll be playing alongside RedBedLam's Steve Finn and Kerry Fraser-Robinson, not to mention doling out some Steam codes for the game. Does the game literally journey through the visual history of FPSes? You bet. The action starts at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Joystiq Streams airs every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST like clockwork, but if you want to catch every stream, make sure to follow us on Twitch. [Images: RedBedLam/Ubisoft]

  • Joystiq Streams: Grunt punting the old way in Master Chief Collection

    by

    11.07.2014

Were the Covenant not a wholly fictional race of militaristic, lizardy zealots, Joystiq would ask their leaders a very simple question: Why do you use Grunts in your military? Cannon fodder is one thing, but in terms of strategic value, they don't seem to add a whole hell of a lot to either offensive or defensive capabilities. Given, their little squeals are hilarious and no doubt boost morale in training, but that cannot possibly be the only reason. It just doesn't make sense! To study this behavior further, Joystiq is streaming one last chunk of Halo: The Master Chief Collection at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. If we're lucky, we may even get in some hot multiplayer action. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts at 4:00PM EST every Tuesday and Thursday, but Friday streams like these happen pretty regularly. Want to catch them all? Follow us on Twitch. [Images: Microsoft]

  • Joystiq Streams: Halo 4's spectacular butts in glorious 60fps [Update: Watch the replay!]

    11.06.2014

If there's one thing we know about Halo 4, it's that it has the single best selection of butts in any shooter ever made. Say what you will about 343's take on classic Halo multiplayer, its expansion of the series' plot, or Spartan Ops. No other FPS in the history of FPSes can compete with the derrieres of Halo 4, from the Spartan Ops marines, to Cortana, to old Master Chief himself. The question we've been asking ourselves for months, though, is this: what do those butts look like at 60fps? We'll find out today on Joystiq Streams. Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, we'll be playing chunks of Halo 4's campaign as it appears in the retail version of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Ludwig Kietzmann (@LudwigK) will continue his tour through the compilation while Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello) hangs out in the chat to answer your questions about the game. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, but you can follow us on Twitch to catch every weird stream we do throughout the week. [Images: Microsoft]

  • Joystiq Streams: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare pays it forward [CANCELED]

    11.03.2014

After 11 years, Call of Duty has followed an unexpected evolutionary path. The road to Advanced Warfare – which we awarded 4 stars in our review – looks more like the one stretching between entries in '80s horror franchises. Friday the 13th was about a slasher attacking teenagers and it ended with a 9-foot tall Jason Vorhees killing people on a spaceship. Call of Duty went from straight faced aping of Saving Private Ryan to an annually updated sport married to Roland Emmerich-ian spectacle. From storming Normandy to rocket packs and Kevin Spacey. How did we get here? Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, we'll be checking out the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare campaign, discussing the evolution of the series over the past decade and wondering aloud if this game is actually a sequel to K-PAX. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, but streams like these happen all the time throughout the week so make sure to follow us on Twitch to know when we go live. 10.31.2014

We've run the horror gamut during our Halloween Horror Streams extravaganza. We've done old school, we've done new school, we've done zombie apocalypse and haunted zeppelin and even camp. What we haven't done, however, is pit a member of the staff against a game that originally scared them so much they had to quit. To close out our Halloween celebration, we're pitting Ludwig Kietzmann (@LudwigK) against Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The last time he played Amnesia, he lasted about five minutes and had to stop. Today he has no choice but to go an hour for the stream. It all starts on Joystiq.com/Twitch and right here in this post at 4:00PM EST. Joystiq streams every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST with early looks at upcoming games, developer interviews, and play sessions with the weird old stuff we love. If you want to catch series like the Halloween Horror sessions, make sure to follow us on Twitch. [Images: Frictional Games]

    10.30.2014

Ten years later, it's hard to believe that Master Chief couldn't always dual wield those snappy pistols. Has it been so long since we messed each other up in Coagulation? Did 3650 days really pass between now and the first time we saw Master Chief ride that bomb right into a Covenant ship? Now that Halo: The Master Chief is officially in our hands, it's all coming back to us. And now it's coming back to you as we stream a slice of the newly-remastered Halo 2. Join us on Joystiq.com/Twitch at 5:30PM EST for a one hour chunk of the freshly HD-ified Halo 2. Ludwig Kietzmann (@LudwigK) will be playing through a chapter of the campaign while Earnest Cavalli hangs out in the chat. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, in addition to many other unpredictable times throughout the week. Follow us on Twitch to catch us whenever we're live. • Halloween Horror Streams: Rule of Rose shoves a dead rat in your face

    by
    Anthony John Agnello

    10.30.2014

One school of logic says that cumbersome controls makes horror games scarier. Resident Evil's tank controls, for example, may not let you walk with the natural fluidity of a real person, but they do often force you to fearfully, slowly back away from zombies rather than flat out turning around and bolting. It worked in the original. Some games, though, are just plain broken. Case in point: Rule of Rose. Punchline's first and only horror game is barely playable thanks to its broken interface. Trying to stab an evil puppet with a spoon and never connecting isn't scary. It's stupid. Like some of gaming's greats, Rule of Rose almost overcomes its bad control through sheer style. Bad controls or not, it is a deeply unsettling game. Joystiq's Halloween Horror Streams goes into its final stretch at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch with Rule of Rose. Children waterboard teenagers, people get poked with dead rats, and haunted airships confuse everyone. Join us for some of the most surreal scares you can get in a video game. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, in addition to many other unpredictable times throughout the week. Follow us on Twitch to catch us whenever we're live. • Halloween Horror Streams: Shadow of Condemned: Criminal Origins

    10.29.2014

Shadow of Mordor isn't a scary game. Building up pressure in high stakes scenarios is something it excels at, but making with the scares? Not these orcs. Developer Monolith Productions probably just needed a break, though. It's coming off a decade of smart, very scary games. Condemned: Criminal Origins looms large among them. One of the very first games out there for Xbox 360, Condemned's murder mystery still has power, hence why it's a perfect selection for our Halloween Horror Streams. Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, we'll be streaming the PC version of Condemned for your pleasure. Xav de Matos (@Xav), a man who readily admits to being terribly frightened by first-person horror games, will take the helm. Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello) will hang in the chat offering moral support. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, but we stream at other times too so make sure to follow us on Twitch to know when we're live. [Images: Sega]
