GoPro's new Quik app makes highlight reels from your favorite photos
GoPro says its redesigned Quik app solves the "black hole" problem that comes with your traditional camera roll.
GoPro adds Quik video editing features to its main app
GoPro's main application is absorbing major Quik video editing features as part of the company's quest to create a single-app experience. The action camera-maker purchased Quik back in 2016 when it was still known as Replay and offered it as a standalone application. Now, it's rolling out what it says is the first in a series of updates meant to bring all its mobile editing tools in one place.
GoPro QuikStories automatically creates a sweet edit for you
If you've spent more than five minutes on social media recently, you'll know that "stories" are the hot new currency. Sharing your day with your followers keeps you and your friends coming back for more. While stories have largely been the realm of apps like Instagram and Snapchat, GoPro recently decided it would toss its hat into the narrative-telling ring with "QuikStories."
GoPro's deal with Huawei gives it a foothold in smartphones
Don't look now, but GoPro just shifted a little toward becoming a mobile app company. The action camera maker has struck a deal with Huawei that will see its intelligent video editor, Quik, integrated with the photo gallery app in the P10, P10 Plus and other smartphones packing newer versions of Huawei's EMUI interface. The centerpiece is a Highlights feature that uses Quik to automatically whip up a video based on your photos and videos, complete with backing music. Think of it as a more video-focused spiritual successor to HTC's Zoe.
GoPro's Hero5 Black and Session bring overdue improvements
Recently, GoPro unveiled an entirely new product lineup. Not just the new Hero5 Black ($399) and Hero5 Session ($299), but also the Karma drone, a surprise hand-held gimbal -- known as the Karma Grip -- and a brand new cloud service called GoPro Plus. While it's going to be another week or so before we can get our hands on the Karma drone, I had a chance to spend some time with the new flagship Hero5 Black and its sidekick, the Hero5 Session. Both come with some exciting, long-awaited new features, which I'll lay out in detail below. With many of the upgrades addressing common pain points, it's clear that this year, GoPro was mainly focused on polishing the user experience.
GoPro's new video editing suite is very familiar
It didn't take long for GoPro to make use of those mobile video editing apps it acquired back in February. The action camera maker has launched a "mobile creative suite" that, in its initial form, repurposes Quik and Splice as tools for editing your sports footage. Quik, now completely free on Android and iOS, automatically edits any video (whether or not it's from your GoPro cam) to give you ready-to-share clips. Splice, meanwhile gives iOS users deeper manual editing that includes everything from transitions to graphic overlays.
