Oppo may have already teased its first 5G smartphone in Zurich earlier this month, but today, the company is bringing its entire Reno family -- including the mid-range Reno and the flagship Reno 10x Zoom -- to Europe. This means the Chinese brand will be going head to head with Huawei using its very own 10x hybrid zoom camera outside of its home territory. With the $1,000 Reno 5G leading the party ahead of its May launch, the Reno 10x Zoom follows with a €799 (about $890) base price due in early June, whereas the Reno lands at a more modest €499 ($560) on May 10th.

If you thought the leak from two weeks ago had given the game away for Oppo's new Reno smartphone series, don't worry, as the real deal has more to offer. At the Shanghai launch event today, Oppo finally unveiled its first two Reno devices -- the Reno Standard Edition and the Reno 10x Zoom Edition -- while also teasing the Reno 5G which will be shown off in Zurich later today.

Manufacturers have been coming up with creative ways to design bezel-free phones since the iPhone X arrived. After a parade of one notched phone after another, they've started releasing fully bezel-free devices with pop-up selfie cameras instead. One of the companies is Oppo, which has at least two phones like that under its belt. Now, a couple of leaks (by Slashleaks) show that the Chinese manufacturer is working on another device under an upcoming series named Reno with a pop-up cam that's not quite like its previous offerings: it's wedge-shaped and slides out from one end only.

The US government is making good on its promise to expand the use of drones. The Department of Transportation has named the 10 projects that will participate in its Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot Program, and they represent a wide swath of the country. Most of them are municipal or state government bodies, including the cities of Reno and San Diego, Memphis' County Airport Authority and the Transportation Departments for Kansas, North Carolina and North Dakota. However, the rest are notable: the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma will be part of the program, as will the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and Virginia Tech.

  • Apple's Reno data center prepares for update

Apple's data center near Reno, Nevada is getting an update according to the Reno Gazette-Journal. The paper is reporting that Apple has applied for new building permits for its Reno Technology Park campus. Apple submitted permit applications for two additional data cluster buildings as it ramps up yet another phase of development for the site. The new facilities will bring the number of data cluster buildings at the Apple campus to eight, including the initial 20,000 square-foot rapid deployment module that went live earlier this year as part of "Phase 1" development. Apple also completed an administrative building a few months ago as part of the data center's second phase of development, which is expected to wrap up by the end of summer as the location transitions to its third phase. While the news that Apple is expanding in the area is good news, the population of Reno is still waiting for the company to fulfill its promise to build a downtown facility. Part of Apple's negotiations for building the data center in the first place included the building of a downtown Reno facility in exchange for nearly US$89 million in tax incentives. Head over to the Reno Gazette-Journal for more information on the upcoming expansions to the Reno data center.

  • Apple planning to build solar farm to power Reno data center

    by

Apple is planning to build a state-of-the-art solar-powered farm to power its Rino data center, according to GigaOm. Currently the Reno data center is powered using geothermal energy, but once the solar powered farm is completed, Apple's data center will run on 100 percent renewable energy. And as you might expect from a company such as Apple, the solar farm they are building is cutting-edge. As Katie Fehrenbacher writes for GigaOm: Apple's solar farm in Reno will be able to provide between 18 to 20 MW worth of power, which is about the same size as its two solar plants in North Carolina, which are both 20 MW in size. For an independent company (not a utility) -- particular an internet company -- 18 to 20 MW is a very large solar system. But for the Reno solar farm, Apple is actually planning to use a new type of technology for the solar system, which includes both solar panels and also mirrors that concentrate the sun's rays up to seven times onto the panels. That process increases the amount of power generated. There is no firm date on when the solar farm will be completed, but it is estimated that its construction will create over 100 new jobs in the Reno area.

  • Apple's plan for Reno data center gets green light

Apple's gotten the thumbs-up for another data center, this one in the biggest little city in the world, Reno, Nevada. Unfortunately, the deal itself doesn't hold a lot of weight, but at least Apple's gotten another nod in the right direction. The Nevada Board of Economic Development put its support behind the ongoing deal, agreeing to bring in the data center, and provide Apple with up to $89 million in tax breaks. Now, that board doesn't actually oversee deals like that, so a lack of endorsement by this board doesn't mean the deal would have been dead in the water. Local governments have already approved most of the tax breaks that Apple needed from Reno. But there were some concerns on this board, and there was talk of maybe trying to stop the deal somehow. So a vote to endorse the deal is just good news for Apple, and means that there won't be any issues from higher up the chain. Someone on the board did promise to bring the deal back up next year, but Apple's data center is set to go live sometime in 2012, so it may be a moot point by then. [via Engadget]

  • Apple's iCloud data center gets green light to come to Reno, be a star

Apple's plans to erect an iCloud data center in Sparks, Reno have gained traction now the local board of economic development have rubber-stamped the deal. While largely ceremonial, it's given its assent to $89 million in tax breaks to entice the company to break ground on the weirdly-named "Project Jonathan Hub." The new data center is expected to go live before the end of the year, hopefully ensuring that upgrading to OS 10.9 aren't as fraught as they were for Mountain Lion last week. • Apple looking to build data center in Reno

All of Apple's iCloud initiatives need data centers -- big ones -- and the company has announced plans to build a new facility near Sparks, Nevada, just a short toss of a poker chip east of Reno. That's not all Apple is planning to do in Northern Nevada. There are also plans to build a business and purchasing center in downtown Reno, part of a total US$1 billion investment over the next ten years. As with most big job-producing deals of this kind, Apple is hoping to get $89 million in tax breaks from the city, county, and state to sweeten the pot. It's estimated that the economic impact of the projects will be a jackpot for the region -- $343 million from the 41 full-time jobs and 200 contract employees at the data center, and another $103 million from the construction required for facilities. In addition, the local and state governments are going to collect about $16 million in tax revenue from Apple. The deal needs the approval of the local governments today in order to proceed, but it's expected that all the players will chip in with their agreement.

  • Apple pitches data center near Reno, gambles iCloud will pay off among other puns

Apple data centers are popping up like spring flowers: following its North Carolina, Oregon and California plans, it's now pitching a fourth data center in Sparks, Nevada, just outside of Reno. The enigmatically named Project Jonathan hub is expected to light up before the end of the year if it's given the green light. Not surprisingly, Apple is promising jobs for the area, although the company is choosing the location for a reason: it's hoping for tax breaks on top of the advantages that previously led it to funnel some of its money through Nevada. We'll have a better idea as to the fate of the data center when Apple argues for the project on June 27th, but it's reasonable to think Apple is eager to make the Sparks location a reality. The more capacity and reliability it can build into iCloud and iTunes, the better. [Image credit: Amy Meredith, Flickr]

  • AT&T joins the herd, looks to trial bandwidth capping in Reno, NV

During an age where unlimited bandwidth has never been more useful for perfectly legal and entertaining reasons, carriers everywhere are looking to harsh our collective mellow. Following in the frowned-upon footsteps of Comcast, AT&T is gearing up to trial monthly bandwidth caps in Nevada. Starting this month, Reno-area subscribers using the carrier's least expensive DSL service (768k) will be forced to download less than 20GB in a month; the cap amount increases with the speed of the service, topping out at 150GB for the 10Mbps level of service. A USA Today report on the matter even admits that "streaming video services like the one Netflix offers" could indeed push users over the limit without any illegal transfers to speak of. Of note, customers involved in the trial will be able to track their usage via the web, and AT&T will contact them if they surpass 80% of their limit. Should they exceed the threshold even after a grace period, they'll be dinged $1 per gigabyte in overage charges. Awesome.

We already know you love AT&T's Total Home DVR service, but for whatever reason the company's been less than forthcoming about where and when its hitting across the country. Likely spurred on by our coverage (or maybe not) the latest press release breaks down the seven markets currently feeling the joy of multiple HD stream recording and sharing wash over them like rain, or a particularly refreshing soda. U-verse users in Atlanta, Cleveland, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Reno and Sacramento should all have access to the free software upgrade as of today. Press release is after the break, any areas still missing from the official count?

  • WiMAX tested in Reno, doesn't work in cars

Sprint may have just launched the XOHM WiMAX network in Baltimore, but would-be merger partner Clearwire has been running its version of the mobile broadband service in Reno for a while, and InfoWorld went down to test it out and give us a taste of what to expect. Performance was good while not in motion, with downloads speeds around 1.5 to 2.0 Mbps and uploads hitting 275 to 325Kbps, but actually getting mobile broadband seems to be out of the question -- the system simply couldn't connect to a laptop moving in a car or on a train. That seems like a dealbreaker to us, but we'll give it a pass for now since it's so early in the game -- we'll see if Sprint can do better.

  • Charter ruffling feathers in Reno, NV / McDowell, NC

Why does it seem that Charter, out of all the cable carriers in the world, finds itself intertwined with so much mischief? The latest forehead-pounding episode is actually a two-fer, with gripes arising from Reno, Nevada and a rural section of North Carolina. In the Silver State, Charter is apparently looking to pull four public access channels to retrieve bandwidth for the launch of 12 new digital channels. The company's George Jostlin proclaims that the "majority of consumers are calling it on a daily basis and asking for more HD / digital programming," but the City of Reno has announced its intentions to sue the provider if an agreement can't be reached on the matter by next Wednesday. Across the country in McDowell County, NC, Charter is catching flack for wanting to strip Marion of its information channel (and combine it with the county's government channel) in order to add three HD stations. We like the intentions here, but seriously, you folks should work on the execution. [Thanks PopWeaverHDTV, image courtesy of TSLPL]Read - Issues in RenoRead - Stirring the pot in rural NC

Hey Nevada, don't ever say AT&T never gave you anything, alright? Said carrier has just launched its fiber-based U-verse services in the state, with Reno and Sparks first on the list to receive 'em. Both locales can get on board with U-verse TV, High Speed Internet and / or U-verse Voice, and while select individuals can order any of the options now, AT&T has assured us that more homes will be reached "on an ongoing basis." As for Las Vegas? Take a guess -- it's just as good as ours.[Thanks, sYn0ptik]

  • Final Fantasy aliases used by murdering teens

In Germany, Final Fantasy is now being called a killerspiele ("killer game"), likely adding fuel to the movement against violent games. Of course, Final Fantasy isn't often singled out for its portrayal of violence, which by most measures is never gratuitous. But when two teenage boys, calling themselves 'Sephiroth' and 'Reno', allegedly stab a couple to death and kidnap another female, it undoubtedly leads to some unfortunate finger pointing. That the two boys also had a copy of Final Fantasy VII installed on a computer doesn't help the spread of sensationalism. It's unfortunate that during these times of inexplicable grief and confusion there's a tendency to try to rationalize the irrational. Two boys playing Final Fantasy, calling each other Sephiroth and Reno, does not engender such tragedy.[Via The Last Boss]
