What Hollywood doesn't understand about virtual reality
As a screenwriter, I'll frequently find myself at a meeting with a Hollywood executive who keenly lets me in on a secret: Virtual reality is "the future" of scripted entertainment. While there is little doubt that the old ways for television and movies are changing -- shows are getting shorter for YouTube or longer for Netflix -- I wonder if the executives extolling the virtues of VR have actually strapped on a pair of goggles and taken a good, hard look at this future they champion. Because from what I see, quality scripted VR entertainment is still science fiction.
Befriend a bear or get killed by it in PS4-exclusive 'Wild'
When Michel Ancel, creator of Rayman, first demoed Wild, the PlayStation 4-exclusive game set in a lush Neolithic world of ancient tribes and animals, it was generally met with raves. After nearly a year, however, gamers actually want to know how it plays. At Sony's Paris Games Week event, Ancel replied in the best way possible: By showing you could ride a freaking bear. In Wild, you can also take control of animals and play as them, summon spirits and walk (or swim) around the vast open world. But before any bear-riding happens, you'll need to get savvy about your environment. As Ancel explained in his charming French accent, "For hours and hours at the beginning of the game, you will be killed by the bears."
PlayStation in Paris: Lots of trailers, not much news
Paris Games Week 2015 became a Iot more interesting when Sony decided to hold its fall event there instead of at Gamescom. So after all the hand-wringing, how was it in the end? Comme ci, comme ca. There were a few important announcements, like a release date for No Man's Sky, the launch of Gran Turismo Sport, complete with an entire league, and the reveal of Quantic Dreams' beautiful-looking Ex Machina-type game called Detroit. We also saw gameplay for Wild, Michel Ancel's (other) eagerly anticipated title. Otherwise, it was a bit of a letdown, with a lot of rehashing and still no solid release date for PlayStation VR. You can ride a bear in 'Rayman' creator's PS4 game, 'Wild'
We haven't heard much about Wild, the new game from Rayman creator Michel Ancel, since its announcement in August 2014. It was a highlight of Sony's Gamescom press conference that year, offering a fantastical, open-world landscape filled with ferocious beasts and strong warriors, and then it seemingly disappeared -- until today. Ancel took the stage at Sony's Paris Games Week press conference and showed off Wild's mechanics, transforming from a human into an eagle and a rabbit as his needs dictated. He also rode a bear for a while, which was "the greatest thing," as our liveblog put it. At the end of the demo, a giant snake lady appeared in front of the main character, sealing the fantastical tone of the game. Check out the PGW walkthrough below.
Fox's journey into virtual reality begins with 'Wild'
Virtual reality is going to the movies and Hollywood's excited about it. Or, at the very least, the execs at 20th Century Fox's specialty division Fox Searchlight are cautiously and thoughtfully wading into the deep end of this new medium. For its film Wild, starring Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, the studio has crafted what it's calling a companion VR piece with the help of Montreal-based VR artists/directors Paul Raphaël and Félix Lajeunesse, and it was demoed at CES in Las Vegas this week for select press.

Rayman creator goes Wild, announces exclusive open-world PS4 adventure
Rayman creator Michel Ancel has announced Wild, an exclusive open-world title for the PlayStation 4. Wild is the debut title of Wild Sheep Studios, the studio Ancel recently announced to the world. "We wanted to focus on a single platform, and PS4 was clearly the best fit," Ancel said during the announcement, on Sony's stage at the PlayStation press conference. "Our concept is based on experiencing new situations every time you play." Despite forming the new studio, Ubisoft says that Ancel remains a member of its Ubisoft Montpellier team. Someone has to remind them they announced a Beyond Good & Evil sequel from time to time, right?
Oprah launching 'Book Club 2.0,' your mom now knows what 'webisode' means
Everyone! Check under your chairs! It's a...new book club from Oprah! Yep, the former queen of daytime TV is revamping her famed literary organization for the 21st century. Winfrey says she was so taken by Cheryl Strayed's Wild, that she absolutely had to get back on the book peddling bandwagon. The talk show icon will be launching digital editions of the book for the Kindle, Nook and iPad on Monday, featuring exclusive content like a reader's guide. Webisodes featuring Winfrey will go up each week and readers can submit questions via Twitter and Facebook. The whole thing leads up to a live streaming interview with the author on July 22nd. Nokia Sabre brandished ahead of launch, expected to unveil its Mango of steel next week?
Andy Lees mentioned at AsiaD that Nokia would be launching more than one Windows Phone at its London-based event next week, and there's a chance that the prototype you see above could be unveiled alongside the Nokia 800 Sea Ray. Pocketnow is referring to the Mr. Blurrycam-produced image as the Sabre, said to be running on a 1.4GHz single-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 3.5-inch WVGA display and a 5MP rear camera. The alleged price won't stab your wallet, as the source claims it'll cost somewhere between $410 and $480. Of course, there's less than a week before Nokia World begins and the speculation ends, and we'll be there to deliver the blow-by-blow action as it happens. Update: Commenters have made the connection between this mysterious device and the recently-announced Nokia 603, a Symbian Belle handset, with the hardware buttons simply whited out at the bottom. And we're definitely seeing the resemblance -- in fact, if you look closely enough at the Metro UI it appears slightly crooked, as if the stack of tiles is leaning to the right. We'd say the chances of this image being a fake are quite high.
Motorola Admiral spied in the wild, waiting patiently for its turn to sail out of harbor
We can't imagine this Admiral wants to stick around in the docks for much longer, yet its date of departure from port is still unclear. Fortunately, the Motorola Admiral -- the device that we presume will become the fearless leader of the Direct Connect fleet -- is one nautical mile closer to the sea of finished products, now that we've been handed some pics of the skipper itself in the wild. It's exactly as we've expected, as it looks rather close to the version we saw in the now-pulled "official" video. According to the image snapper, the Admiral is "awkward to hold due to the bottom being so thin and the phone being very top heavy." It's also known as the XT603, and unsurprisingly runs on Moto's proprietary UI (formerly called MotoBlur). We didn't hear of any change in the specs, so for now we're still expecting to see the military-certified handset come with a 1.2GHz single-core Qualcomm MSM8655 CPU, Android 2.3, 3.1-inch VGA display, a 5MP rear camera with 720p HD video capture and a 1,860mAh battery. Pantech Breakout shows its darling face in the wild
The Pantech Breakout, Verizon's least-hyped LTE phone this side of the Droid Bionic, has seen a fair amount of time splayed out on paper without getting its fair share of closeups. This has finally changed, however, now that Droid-Life was able to get its hands on true-blue images of the device. It appears to be a unit that's already arrived in a Verizon retail outlet, lending credence to the rumor that the 4-inch Android handset will be available for our purchase next week. Unfortunately, Verizon's still acting as if the phone doesn't exist, so we'll just have to strum our fingers on the desk for (hopefully) just a few more days to see if it'll get acknowledged.
HTC Bliss spotted frolicking in the blurry wild?
We haven't heard much about the HTC Bliss since it popped up on a Verizon roadmap earlier this month, but the folks over at PocketNow have obtained photos of what could be the handset's first public appearance. The so-called "women only" smartphone, which recently passed through the FCC, is rumored to run on a 800MHz single-core processor and will reportedly sport a new version of HTC's Sense UI. It's also expected to run Android 2.3 and to rock a GSM 900MHz radio, though, as you can tell, it's a little difficult to glean any of that from the above blurry images. No word yet on whether it'll launch in September, as expected, or whether it'll look a bit more feminine when it does, but we'll keep you posted.
Blackberry Bold 9900 spotted in the British wilderness, bang on schedule
A tipster just spotted the Bold 9900 at a Carphone Warehouse in the UK, days before operators there and in the US expect to launch the device on August 16th. We can't be sure if it's actually for sale or just a window display that went up too early, but it certainly reassures us that the new Bold will be out on time. Alternatively, if you wanted to be harsh on RIM, you could describe this non-QNX release as being at least a year too late. (Oh, and it's good to see business chugging along as usual in ol' Blighty despite those nasty riots.) [Thanks, Avi]
HTC Sensation 4G with T-Mobile branding turns up, wins free blurrycam'd photo shoot
We've been told that wild phones -- like hearts -- can't be tamed, but we're definitely up for giving it our best shot. We knew it was just a matter of time, but pictures of the HTC Sensation 4G out in the open are creeping out of the woodwork. While everything appears to be legit, we always take these kinds of pictures with a grain of salt; after all, is there anything that Photoshop can't do? Nevertheless, there's a smorgasbord of shots to feast upon -- most of them receiving the blurrycam treatment -- at the link below.
Mesmerizing Touch Wood SH-08C ad showcases Japan's beauty, mankind's ingenuity (video)
Sharp isn't apt to sell but 15,000 of its Touch Wood SH-08C handsets, but after watching the ad below, you can bet there will be demand for more. It's a bit baffling to think of the trouble Drill, Inc. went through in order to assemble the pieces necessary for a wooden ball to trickle down a homegrown marimba, particularly in the midst of Kyushu, Japan's woodlands. Kenjiro Matsuo was responsible for the creation of the instrument, while Morihiro Harano is being handed credit for the idea itself; in fact, he confirmed to The New York Times that no artificial music was added whatsoever, with only the background levels being adjusted up for effect. You may have never listened to a piece of classical music in your life, but you're sorely missing out if you ignore Bach's Cantata 147, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." Or, at least the version in that video below.
Smithsonian captures 201,000 wild photos with automated cameras
We have this big, fang-filled, claw-sharpened big cat all up in our grill thanks to the researchers at the Smithsonian, who have created a new database filled with over 201,000 pictures of elusive animals in their natural habitats. These candid shots were made possible with motion-activated automated cameras scattered around the world, and feature over 200 species of birds and mammals, and here's most impressive part -- these photos are au naturel. That's right... there's no editing here, these are untouched raw shots straight from the rain forests of places like Peru and China -- which allow us to see these magnificent creatures as scientists do. WVIL's unbelievable 31 megapixel cameraphone is unbelievably fake, attempts pathetic viral campaign (update)
Honestly, we never thought people could get this high and drunk in Vegas, but the guys from WVIL were really pushing it. Their crime? A blatantly staged viral campaign for an "unbelievable" smartphone that sports a 31 megapixel CMOS full frame sensor. Oh, and it has an interchangeable lens, too, with which you can use the main body as a wireless viewfinder (like the Samsung SH100 paired up with an Android phone). Nice concept, WVIL, just too bad your mom called to disown you at CES. Video after the break. Munk Bogballe debuts Classic Bespoke luxury laptop line: $7,000 and way, way up
With a name like Munk Bogballe, it has to be pricey... right? Right. 2.5 years after launching what's likely the most expensive MacBook of all time, the aforesaid purveyor of fine, fine mobile computers has introduced its Classic Bespoke collection -- at the Millionaire Fair in Moscow, no less. So, what does a base price of €5,200 ($7,180) buy you? A 5.1 pound slab of aluminum, accented with lush leather, a mahogany screen frame, freshwater pearl on / off button and oodles of gold. Oh, and a single line of diamonds, presumably for squeezing out six to ten more frames per second in Portal. You may also expect to get only the latest and greatest when it comes to technology, but you'd be badly mistaken; the standard configuration ships with a Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and a paltry 500GB hard drive.
