Well, this week as been rather terrible. With all the death and mayhem both at home and abroad, it's enough to make anyone feel rather helpless. It's times like these that we have to force ourselves to remember there is still a great deal of good left in the world. From life-saving medical advancements and clean energy promises to superior image scanners and kick-assier video games, this week's selection shows that humanity isn't all bad (just mostly).

Too much food? Too many bargains? With a handful of antacids nearby, we hope you've enjoyed this Thanksgiving week. Following in tradition of all that indulgence, we're all about size and excess here at TAM. Nuclear-powered data centers, puffy nuggets of gold, huge numbers of user names hacked... and a suggestion for next year's Thanksgiving dessert. We'd suggest you start making room now.

It's been a heck of a week. With the world still reeling from the Paris attacks, more people than ever are concerned with their personal security. That's why we're featuring five of this week's best posts about stuff that keeps us safe -- and one about a certain CEO that probably could use some more of it after what he said. Remember, there's safety in numbers.

Forget robot chauffeurs, our future ground transports won't even need drivers to start with. Between their LIDAR arrays and digital mapping technology, autonomous vehicles are getting safer, more capable and -- dare we say it -- more attractive by the day.

What a week it's been for entertainment news on the internet! Netflix's first theatrical release, Beasts of No Nation, is racking up views; the NFL's first live-streamed game, which debuted on Yahoo!, was reasonably well-received; and we learned something new about our friend, the chameleon. And now for some numbers.

It's been a week filled with 30 to 40-year-old movie franchises, but other stuff happened, I swear. There is a new Cheap, cheap Segway pretender, a high-speed asteroid fly-by and more! Time may be relative, but TAM still comes in weekly installments. Halloween special? We didn't say that.

So much happened this week! There was the bisecting Ultimate Hacking Keyboard, Amazon's Destinations site which lasted just half a year, a bunch of products that cost exactly $50 (aka half a Benjamin) and, of course, the best trolling of the year. Because math isn't half as fun if you don't do it by the numbers.

Microsoft and Dell added a slew of new products to their portfolios this week. But those aren't the only additions to the industry over the past seven days. Netflix added a dollar to the price of its popular streaming service and Verizon added $20 to its grandfathered Unlimited Data plan's monthly fees while NASA dropped more than 8,000 Apollo-era images into Flickr for your viewing pleasure. If you've got a nose for numbers, check out the rest of this week's After Math lineup.

It's been a wild week, and not just for our stock portfolios. The internet's self-described "Spam King" admitted to posting more than 27 million ads on Facebook. Microsoft celebrated the 20th anniversary of Windows 95 by dredging up a promo video featuring Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry. Because Friends is never not topical. And a British man endured an 11-hour surgery to have the world's first bionic penis installed. Good times!

We've taken a lot of good with the bad this week. On one hand, all four major cell carriers went down in the Southeast overnight, Samsung killed its Boxee project , Reddit banned its most famous racists, and YouTube nixed its venerable 301+ placeholder. On the plus side, Facebook started letting celebrities livestream themselves, Apple began streaming Dr Dre's comeback album Compton (though it's an Apple Music exclusive), Razer packed its gaming keyboards and keypads with technicolor dream lights and somebody 3D printed the most adorable teeny, tiny circular saw you'll ever see.

Already immersing yourself in Windows 10? Trying to block out the not-so-favorable memories of Windows 8? Good for you. This week involved a new smartphone from a new challenger, and several new smartphone from a once-dominant player. And we don't mean Nokia, which was busy dipping its toes into the world of VR cameras. Because of course.

Our graphical calculators are back from repair, so it's time to crunch the numbers once again. It's a good week for it too: Apple Watch predictions, uneasily fast explanations of the entire universe and cable company that's doing better in internet than, well, cable.

Defiance has received a free update called Aftermath that builds "off of the climactic season two TV finale," according to a Trion press release. There's new content that will "carry players across various locales from Silicon Valley to Paradise as the world teeters on the verge of all-out war between the Earth Republic and Votanis Collective," and it includes new events, contracts, pursuits, and enemies. Don't forget about the Thanksgiving-themed New Frontier Harvest, which runs from November 26th through December 10th. As well, don't forget about the Aftermath trailer that's waiting for you behind the break. [Source: Trion press release]

Now that it's a certainty that Defiance's tie-in television series will be getting another season, are you eager to jump back into shooting things in the Silicon Valley? The Aftermath update is coming, and it will bring with it plenty of new things to shoot. Seven new missions will be added to the game, bringing players from Silicon Valley to Paradise and back; a confrontation with the Pilgrims of the Guiding Light and an attempt to start a war between the Earth Republic and the Votanis Collective both await players taking on the update. New enemies, new pursuits, and new contracts will help to round out the patch, giving players new things to fight along with new reasons to take part in the battle. There are also several planned quality-of-life improvements, including mission replay and improved co-op balancing for the season 2 maps. No release date has yet been announced, but it sounds as if players will have plenty to do when the aftermath hits.

  • PAX Prime 2014: Defiance defies barriers to play

If there's one message that Trion Worlds wants to get out about Defiance from PAX Prime this year, it's that the game is bursting with content and absolutely welcoming one and all to play. While we're still waiting for the conversion of the Xbox 360 version to free-to-play, PlayStation 3 and PC players can already jump into the game and experience the title for free. The team's been hard at work refining and fleshing out the game, so for people who might have only dabbled in it shortly after launch, it's almost a completely new world to explore. As season two of the TV show recently wrapped up, so will the current Aftermath storyline in the game. Both the show and the game dealt with the growing threat of cults, and the MMO will be packaging up the entire saga for players to revisit later in September. The devs also shared with me that they used the real-world setting of the Bay Area to unleash some pent-up hatred toward the San Francisco airport and its parking in one of the new areas. Good to know that MMOs can be both fun to play and therapeutic for its makers! Massively's on the ground in Seattle during the weekend of August 29th to September 1st, bringing you all the best news from PAX Prime 2014. Whether you're dying to know more about Warlords of Draenor, The Elder Scrolls Online, Landmark, or any MMO in between, you can bet we'll have it covered!

Trion made a bunch of ArcheAge fans happy earlier this evening, so now it's time to do the same for followers of RIFT, Defiance, and Trove. RIFT's Nightmare Tide expansion officially launches on October 8th, while Defiance will get "a massive end-of-September" update called Aftermath that includes new missions and events. Last but not least, Trove will enter closed beta on September 25th. Massively's Justin Olivetti learned today on the show floor that this phase of beta will not be wiped prior to launch. Players who have purchased currency will receive half again as much back. Guild Wars 2 fans logging in today will encounter the Aftermath update, which seeks to bring some closure to the ongoing living story plotline that saw Lion's Arch devastated and Scarlet defeated. The battle is over. Scarlet Briar is dead. Tyria's noblest warriors have done what they can to save the beloved city of Lion's Arch. But have they truly saved it? Word of Scarlet's demise has spread like wildfire throughout the wards of the city and all across Tyria. The heroes of Lion's Arch, the Lionguard, and Order forces have driven out the remainder of Scarlet's armies, their morale and ranks shattered. All the while, the Breachmaker-Scarlet's enormous airship looming over Sanctum Harbor-continues to drill uncontrollably without its pilot at the helm. One thing is certain: Tyria is scarred. With today's release, "Aftermath," players will discover the depth of those wounds and the legacy left behind by Scarlet's campaign of terror. We've got the Battle for Lion's Arch finale cinematic for you after the break in case you missed or just want to see Scarlet die again (and we know you do!). [Source: ArenaNet press release]
