Earlier this afternoon we received a chest. We had no idea how to open the box, so we started a stream on our Twitch page and asked the Joystiq biomass if they knew a clever way to get inside the puzzle case. Above you'll see the results from Alexander Sliwinski, with assistance and quiet voice (sorry about that!) of Richard Mitchell. If you want to skip ahead to the reveal, it happens after about 13 minutes and many tribulations of tools later. Spoiler after the break...

  • GameSpy updates: Halo CE to get official patch, Lost Planet 3 evacuating

GameSpy's imminent shutdown means some games are going to lose online functionality in the coming weeks, but Halo: Combat Evolved on PC isn't one of them. Last week we reported third party GameRanger was stepping in with support, but now it turns out an official patch is on the way, preserving the shooter's Internet Lobby and online multiplayer. The patch will relocate the Lobby to a server created by a small group of Halo fans. The group's efforts were backed by Bungie, and it's the developer who will host the new server and release the patch "soon," no doubt much to the appreciation of the Halo community. There's good news from Capcom too, with Lost Planet 3 migrating to a new service to retain its online multiplayer across all platforms. Similarly, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Online Edition and Marvel vs. Capcom Origins have already migrated without issues. However, two of the studio's games will lose their online features when GameSpy's service shuts down on May 31, namely Age of Booty and Flock. The two games join a growing list of games affected by the closure, including 50 from EA alone. Going by a removed Microsoft support article, Games for Windows Live's service may follow GameSpy out the door soon after, taking another whole chunk of games with it. [Image: Bungie]

Certain Affinity's Age of Booty can rekindle your passion for the pirate-themed, real-time strategy/board game with an upcoming iPhone, iPad and Android interpretation. The company announced this afternoon that an "all-new version" of the game is in the works, being developed with Chaotic Moon. This new Booty will include a single-player campaign, along with real-time multiplayer and cross-platform support. There's currently no announced release date. The console version of Age of Booty was sent out to die in the holiday fray of 2008, becoming a tale of woe for those who'd dare set sale with a downloadable title near the end of the year.

While it's true that the high-rolling blogging lifestyle has left us out-of-touch with the needs of the unwashed masses, even the fat cats at Joystiq understand that everyone loves a deal (if only to free up some much needed capital for, let's say, a chronically underfunded game publishing division). To help lighten the burden on your wallets, Capcom is offering the following: 50% off a single PSN game every week for five weeks, beginning with Marvel vs. Capcom 2. In total you could scoop up all five games for just under $30 and, since this is a 50% off sale, that also means you'll have saved just under $30. That's math. We've pasted the full list below for you to mull over: February 18, 2010 – Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for $7.49 February 25, 2010 – Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for $7.49 March 4, 2010 – Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for $4.99 March 11, 2010 – Age of Booty for $4.99 March 18, 2010 – 1942: Joint Strike for $4.99

It appears Certain Affinity, creators of Age of Booty, are answering a second call for booty. Trademark groundhog Superannuation has unearthed an application for Legend of Booty. It appears that, despite the nebulous success of Age of Booty after it was released into the holiday fray two years ago, the developer has a certain affinity for making what sounds like a sequel. We've contacted the developer for comment and we're certain that if they have any affinity for giving us information we'll update this post. [Via Superannuation]

  • Age of Booty gets Avatar support March 25 ... maybe

A recent forum post by Capcom senior producer Daryl Allison hints that something to do with Avatars and Age of Booty will be revealed next Wednesday, March 25. The title of the post simply reads "Age of Booty - Xbox Avatars Set Sail." We're guessing this means that Capcom will be adding Avatar support to Age of Booty. Another possibility is that Avatars will receive some Age of Booty themed clothing. We're kind of hoping for the second possibility, because our Avatar is just dying for a peg leg. We've contacted the folks at Capcom in hopes that they might clear up this confusion. We'll update this post when we receive new information. [Update: As reader Johnathan points out, the Capcom post more than likely refers to the Avatar support that was announced in January. Originally slated for a February release, it has yet to see the light of day. Bet your booties (get it?) that Avatar support will arrive next week.]

We're not sure how likely you are to care at this point -- almost four months after the game's initial release -- but Age of Booty has finally been patched with Trophies. The patch is available to download now on both sides of the Atlantic. Simply load up the game and the patch will download automagically. Hopefully this marks one of the last times we'll have to write a post regarding a Trophy patch, though Bionic Commando Rearmed is still due to receive one at some point. However, with the game having released over half a year ago, we hope you're not still holding your breath.

Capcom is preparing to enhance the Age of Booty by adding console specific features in an upcoming patch. Speaking with IGN, the publisher states it'll bring Avatar support for Xbox Live and Trophies to PS3. The eye patch will be free and unearthed near the end of February. Although Age of Booty has received unexceptional reviews, the pirate-themed RTS boardgame certainly deserves the respect of a demo try for those who haven't done so. %Gallery-18253%

Boom Blox My Wii gathered so many cobwebs this year that it looked like it was a prop from a creepy old Boris Karloff movie. The phenomenon of Wii Fit had me dust it off and breathed some new life into it for a few days, but before long it was relegated back to its hiding space under the couch. That is until Boom Blox slid smoothly into the disc slot. Two days later, I could barely move my right arm due to my newfound obsession, and I still fire it up on a regular basis just to hurl balls at Jenga towers.

Capcom has noted that some people have been experiencing "stability and connectivity" issues with the company's swashbuckler of a game, Age of Booty. Apparently, the European trial version and the North American Trophy patch were released too early and have caused problems for owners of the game. Capcom acknowledges the situation and reports that it is working on fixing things right away. Taken from Capcom Unity: "We're rushing a patch out to everyone that'll revert back to the proper version. Sony will have it within 24 hours and the public will have it as soon as Sony declares it ready to publish. Our regular readers, however, may remember that Sony's approval process may take upward to two weeks. So hopefully there will be smooth sailing in time for Christmas. Capcom also says they're about a week away from resubmitting a finalized trial version and Trophy patch.

Age of Booty, Capcom's plundering pirates RTS/board game, docks on the PS3 this week as part of the weekly update. Besides that, it's relatively quiet, with some DLC for LittleBigPlanet and Need for Speed: Undercover washing up on the PSN shore. Our treasure map indicates the full North American update is listed after the break.PS3 Fanboy has the European PSN update, which lacks Booty, but still has plenty of junk in the trunk.

This week's PlayStation Store update will bring with it the first storefront dedicated to a notably proficient publisher. As of Thursday, November 13th, PSN users will be able to access a Capcom-branded section, a convenient repository for all things Mega Man, Street Fighter and Bionic Commando. It's where you'll find this week's pirate-infested arrr-ival, Age of Booty, as well as the upcoming, beefed-up brawler, Super Stunning Ultra Street Fighter II Turbo Special HD Championship Mega Radical Remix.[Thanks, Chris]

Capcom's next PSN game, Age of Booty, will strike the American PlayStation Store this Thursday (a simultaneous European and Asian launch is "looking good" but unconfirmed). The pirate-themed RTS game received decent reviews when it launched on XBLA earlier this year. However, now that the holiday flood of games has started, will people pay attention to this downloadable title?

Following an unexpected delay in mid October, Capcom recently announced that the very enjoyable Age of Booty will plunder the PSN starting Nov. 13. The publisher hopes that Europe and Asia will get it on the same day, but the cabin boy with that confirmation apparently got lost on shore leave (something about a Monkey Island).Despite the middling reviews, the $10 title certainly delivers a quality online experience for those who feel there isn't enough real-time strategy in their board games.

One of the games absent from today's PSN update was Age of Booty, Capcom's pirate-themed multiplayer strategy game. Although already available on XBLA, it appears the game has been delayed to November on PS3. Capcom's blog updates: "We want to ensure the online experience for PSN users is as smooth, fun, and addicting. We also want to ensure all those who dive into the map editor and generate new content for the Age of Booty community have a great time sharing their maps with friends. As a result, we had a little more work to do."Although already on our Trophy Portal, the fine folks at Capcom have re-confirmed their Trophy efforts. The PSN collectibles will be available as a post-release patch "within the first couple of months" of the game's now-delayed release.[Thanks, Chris S.!]
