Amazon’s attempt to reinvent TV shopping has failed
Style Code Live seemed like the perfect bridge between Amazon's online retail dominance and its increasingly accomplished Prime Video service. Nothing is that easy, however, and it all didn't quite pan out: the show is over. The cancellation was unceremoniously abrupt: According to a Page Six report, the show's staff were informed of the end of last week, with social media accounts deleted the same day.
Why the fashion world won't let Amazon in
There's no doubt Amazon has already mastered the art of selling groceries and other essential goods online. But the company aims to be more than that. It's focusing on streaming technologies, with services like Prime Video and Music Unlimited, a rival to Spotify and Apple Music. Then there's fashion, a space that may be the hardest (though not impossible) to conquer. While Amazon isn't new to selling clothes, the company sees high-fashion retail as its next holy grail. It wants to be the place where you can have a $12 Hanes hoodie and a $1,500 Louis Vuitton frock in the same cart.
Amazon's private label takes aim at the fashion industry
You might buy a suit from Amazon, but would you buy a suit made by Amazon? The company has reportedly launched seven private label fashion brands and up to 1,800 new products ranging from men's suits to women's accessories to children's clothing. Its own trademarked brands include Franklin & Freeman, Franklin Tailored, North Eleven, Scout + Ro and Society New York. The brands, which were first spotted by an analyst and reported by fashion site WWD, seem to be moderately priced -- a men's suit costs around $300, for instance.
