Open-world survival game ARK: Survival Evolved was one of the bigger early access games back in 2015, eventually launching a couple of years later on PS4, Xbox One and Steam and gathering 13 million players in the process. Now the title is coming to mobile devices as a free-to-play game. Publisher Studio Wildcard promises the same online experience as the PC and console versions, including a massive island to explore, more than 80 dinosaurs to tame, crafting and building features and multiplayer tribes to join. Developer War Drum Studios (Bully, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Max Payne Mobile) launched a closed beta for ARK today (iOS-only for now), with a full launch set for later this Spring on both iOS and Android.

Sony 'won't allow' cross-platform dino survival in 'Ark' either

Stop me if you've heard this before: The makers of a huge multi-platform game want to unite their disparate users so everyone can play together, regardless of whether they're playing on PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, and Sony is blocking that. This time, it's Ark: Survival Evolved. Lead designer Jeremy Stieglitz was answering questions on Twitter recently and when someone asked if cross-network play would ever happen, he replied with the following: "We have it working internally, but currently Sony won't allow it."

Virtual reality is the best (and safest) way to get up close and personal with dinosaurs. And next month folks with Oculus Rift headsets can do just that thanks to Robinson: The Journey's PlayStation VR exclusivity going going extinct expiring.

After a lengthy wait, PS4 owners will finally be able to play Ark: Survival Evolved this week, with the game launching on December 6th. Since the game became a runaway success on Steam in 2015, PS4 owners have been waiting patiently to play the Early Access survival hit and now they will be able to purchase not only the latest build of Ark but also the recently released Scorched Earth expansion. To make up for the delay, buying Ark: Survival Evolved on PS4 will also net you two PlayStation exclusive items: the Bionic Giganotosaurus skin and a Manticore armor set. Developer Wildcard has also promised that PS4 players will receive the same updates as the Steam Early Access and Xbox One versions and at " a similar tempo".

PS4 owners aren't the only ones getting a treat in the Ark: Survival Evolved universe. Studio Wildcard is starting up an Official Mods Program that will fold user-made add-ons into the main game on PCs and the Xbox One. The move will not only give mods better recognition, but bring them to console gamers that don't always see this kind of content. It'll start off with The Center, a fantasy-themed map arriving in May, followed by the Primitive Plus mod (which forces you to rely on wood and stone) in the summer.

  • 'Ark: Survival of the Fittest' brings dinosaur combat to PS4

What would happen if you combined The Hunger Games with Jurassic Park? That's the idea behind Survival of the Fittest, a standalone game based on ARK: Survival Evolved. The so-called "Multiplayer Online Survival Arena" title launched on PC last month, and now it's headed towards the PlayStation 4. Starting on July 19th, console players will be able to fight for supremacy using the resources on an ever-shrinking arena. The aim is to quickly collect materials, craft better gear and, if you're lucky, tame some dinosaurs to ravage your opponents. It's a whacky concept, for sure.
