Blizzard's Cinder Kitten raises over $2.3 million in Sandy relief
Warcraft players around the world showed their generosity by purchasing the Cinder Kitten pet from the Blizzard store. Blizzard announced in November that every Cinder Kitten purchased by the end of December 21, 2012, would have the profits from the sale go straight to the victims of Superstorm Sandy. They managed to raise a cool $2.3 million dollars! Cinder Kitten Raises More Than $2.3 Million Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of World of Warcraft players around the world who purchased the Cinder Kitten pet, we've raised a total of more than $2.3 million USD to support the American Red Cross's ongoing Superstorm Sandy relief efforts. In December, we announced that for every Cinder Kitten purchased by December 31, 2012, 100% of the adoption fee would be going to assist victims of this disaster -- and the community embraced this fiery feline in droves, helping out a great cause in the process. Cinder kitten now on sale in Blizzard store
If you've been eagerly awaiting Blizzard's release of the fiery little furball pictured above, your wait is over. The Cinder Kitten is now available for purchase on the Blizzard Pet Store for $10. As mentioned last month, 100% of the proceeds from any Cinder Kitten purchased between now and December 31, 2012 will go towards the American Red Cross's Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. The kitten is available in both the US and European Pet Stores. Purchasing the kitten will give you a code that can be redeemed on any North American (or European, for kittens purchased through the Europe Pet Store) account. This code can either be redeemed for your account, or emailed to friends as a gift. After all, nothing says "Happy Holidays!" like a flaming ball of fiery purring death. If you're looking for a good present for that special someone, the Cinder Kitten is a cool in-game item, you can use it for pet battles, and the proceeds go to the Red Cross. What's not to love?

On the other hand ... look, this might sound crazy, but have you noticed that whenever there's a big natural disaster, Blizzard just happens to be ready with a Pet Store pet to sell for charity? I'm sure intelligence will prove that Blizzard owns HAARP, the weather-controlling device array used by the Illuminati to maintain the New World Order. Clearly Blizzard stands to benefit from this by *incoherent mumbling* and *something about chemtrails*. Wake up, sheeple.
World of Warcraft server blades help you save the children, feel slightly better about yourself
If you're going help save the world, you might as well get a little something for yourself at the same time, right? World of Warcraft fans listen up, because Blizzard wants you to help them help St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and it's willing to give you a fairly unique piece of WoW memorabilia for digging deep. The game developer is once again auctioning off World of Warcraft server blades. This time, the company's offering up 2,000 HP p-Class blades that were recently retired when it upgraded its backend hardware. The blades, which have gone up for auction on eBay, have been fitted with a clear case bearing the WoW logo and a plaque featuring a slew of developer signatures. One-hundred percent of proceeds will go to help the research hospital.

Don't forget: if you're in Chicago, and like helping sick kids and playing videogames, you should definitely come out to the Child's Play benefit tonight at Plan B, just north of North and Milwaukee, off the Damen Blue Line stop.I'll be there, there'll be an open bar and raffle prizes, including a few good giveaways from our friends at SwagDog, local developer (they've got an office out near Western and Belmont) Midway will have their latest games available to play (including a MK vs. DC tournament, I believe), and it should be an amazing time. There are plenty of tickets left, and even if you can't grab a ticket, I can probably get you in at the door. Just tell them you're with WoW Insider, and I'm sure we can work something out.Plus, it all goes to support Child's Play, the charity started up by Penny Arcade that donates videogames to hospitals for kids to play while there. Meet WoW Insider at the Chicago Child's Play benefit
Child's Play, the charity started up by Penny Arcade that hooks up kids in the hospital with videogames to play while there, is holding a benefit event in Chicago early next month on December 9th, and I'm going to be there. It's definitely a worthy charity, and I know there are lots of WoW Insider fans in the Second City (many of whom I was able to meet at our Wrath launch meetup), so if you're a fan of videogames, helping sick kids, and want to come out and talk some WoW with me, tickets are available right now.There's a raffle going on as well (I'm angling to get some World of Warcraft-related gear in the pot), and there'll also be a Mortal Kombat vs. DC tournament going on thanks to Chicago's own Midway Games (and I heard there was a Rock Band event, though that may have since fallen through -- we'll see). And oh yeah, since the event is taking place at Plan B, there'll be drinking. It's $10 admission, or you can give $50 for admission and an open bar, though you have to be over 21 for both. I'll let you guess which ticket I bought (hint: the one with the booze).Should be a lot of fun -- if you're in Chicago and weren't able to make it to our launch party, see if your calendar's clear for this event. And if you're not in Chicago, Child's Play has lots of events going on around the country, and obviously they're happy to take donations anyway. MMO Calendar returns, proceeds continue to support St. Jude hospital
Returning for its third consecutive year, the MMO Calendar 2009 is now available from MMOPortal.com. The calendar maintains its $12.95 price tag, with all proceeds being donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Placing an order will also enter the purchaser into a drawing for 1 of 10 prizes, but there's no listing of what exactly those are. Regardless of prizes, the MMO Calendar is one tradition we're happy to see return year after year. The full list of titles featured in this year's calendar can be found after the break.[Via GP]
Breakfast topic: Like birds of a feather
When I queue up with friends, I expect to play by their side. Whether we're conquesting new objectives, defending our assets, running a flag, or retaking lost towers, two or three people dedicated to working together stand a better chance than one person alone. When I wear the battleground crown, I make sure that whoever I came in with is in my group. I also answer other people's requests to be placed with their friends. Those groups are likely to be fighting side-by-side. When someone else is not the leader of the battleground, it can be exceptionally difficult to be transferred among groups. This is not like saving a spot at the lunch table for a friend, but it's about winning the game. I've been playing Paladin lately, but I usually play Shaman. As it stands now, only people in my group can receive the benefit of my Auras and Totems. This may be changing in the future, when some of these buffs will affect the entire raid. For now it just makes sense to honor these requests. If the players have a working synergy, the entire team does benefit from placing them together. How do you handle grouping in the battlegrounds?
"Art of Blizzard" benefit show to be held Saturday
Our good friends at Massively beat us to the punch on this one: as seen on Gabe's (of Penny Arcade) little blurb yesterday, Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, California is holding an "Art of Blizzard" Benefit Show for Child's Play, the charity started by Penny Arcade to buy and donate videogames to children in hospital. Additionally, Blizzard artists and developers will be in attendance at the event, and Upper Deck will be there demo-ing the WoW TCG (which is probably where some of the art comes from) as well. And the art is going to be from all of Blizzard's different games, not just World of Warcraft.The PDF press release has more info, and admission is free to the public. I don't think any of our correspondents are in the area, but if you're around and get to go, be sure to take pictures and send them along to us. It definitely sounds like a fun event, and it's always great when developers put their time and work in to help out a worthy charity.
Reminder: Last day to purchase St. Jude-benefitting MMO calendar
Today is the last day (following a two day extension) to purchase MMOPortal.com's second-annual MMO Calendar benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Just like last year, all proceeds will go directly to helping children, and even our jaded and bitter blogger hearts have nothing mean to say about that.The calendar is $12.95 and features 13 different MMOs and prizes available for those who purchase (list found after the break). But it's not about the prizes, right? It's about helping the kids, right?! Think of it as gaining rep and becoming exalted with the Humanity faction.
Guitar Hero: Save the Seattle kittens edition
Who rocks out harder: cat people or dog people? The Seattle/King County Humane Society is looking to find out by holding a Guitar Hero inspired benefit. The event is on May 22 at Dante's in the U-district of Seattle (it's a bar so you must be over 21). The event is expected to go until 1:30 AM and starts at 7 PM for attendees, 5:30 PM for participants. Participants will need a minimum of $70 in pledges to participate and the winner receives a Guitar Hero controller autographed by the Harmonix development team. But seriously, it's Guitar Hero + booze + saving fluffy animals, gaming doesn't get more guilt free than this.The Humane Society is also looking for tech volunteers to make sure that everything is set up properly for the benefit. The event hopes to raise $5000 -- come on gamers, we can totally blow that number out of the water! The Humane Society deserves way more than that for this simple and brilliant benefit idea.
"Bridge School" concerts on iTunes
Founded over 20 years ago, the Bridge School Concerts are to be released as digital downloads for the first time. The concerts, which consist of 80 tracks, will be released in 6 volumes. Highlights include "Thom Yorke performing a solo rendition of Radiohead's Street Spirit (Fade Out) and a cover of Neil Young's After The Goldrush...Neil Young teams up with Bruce Springsteen for a version of Helpless and also with the Dave Matthews Band for Cortez the Killer. Pearl Jam perform Corduroy whilst their lead singer Eddie Vedder does a solo version of Better Man. Other highlights include Ryan Adams (Oh My Sweet Carolina), Lou Reed (Perfect Day), Metallica (Fade To Black), Red Hot Chili Peppers (Californication) and REM (Losing My Religion)." Profits will benefit the Bridge School, so in addition to fueling one's passion for musical rarities, you can go away feeling happy about contributing to a good cause.
