  • Apple Pay hits Best Buy's app, coming to stores later this year

Best Buy, one of the largest Apple Pay holdouts, is changing its mind. Apple CEO Tim Cook just announced during its earnings call that Best Buy stores will support Apple Pay later this year. It's also available starting today within Best Buy's mobile apps. The news comes only a few hours after we learned the service will soon be supporting Discover cards, making it compatible with the top four biggest credit card companies in the U.S. Best Buy's reversal is especially interesting since its a member of MCX (Merchant Customer Exchange), a joint initiative between big retailers like Walmart and Target to support their own mobile payments app, dubbed CurrentC. None of the MCX members supported Apple Pay when it launched last fall (though Target's mobile app does support it now), so Best Buy's flip-flop might be a sign that we'll see wider support eventually. • Roku TV is gearing up for a future full of 4K

Roku is going 4K! Eventually. The company has announced plans for a 4K reference model of a Roku TV, and that TCL would be the first to partner with the company in the Ultra HD space. What does that mean? Well, it means soon enough Roku will have a board and software capable of spitting out unnaturally hi-res video from the likes of Netflix (one of the first to announce it will deliver 4K through Roku TV), but that it will be up to TV manufacturers to turn that into a consumer product. How long will that take? Who knows? The company isn't nailing down a time frame just yet. But we don't expect anything to hit shelves until the summer at the earliest. (And we're probably being optimistic.)

  • Best Buy discounts the iPad Air 2 and mini 3 in $50-$100 off holiday sale

If you missed the big Black Friday sales on the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, you now have another chance to score one of Apple's latest iPad models at a significant discount. Best Buy kicked off a new promotion on Sunday that takes up to $100 off the retail price of the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3. The discount scales with a larger price drop for the higher priced and higher capacity tablet devices. The 16GB WiFi-only iPad mini 3 has the lowest price drop -- $50, while the 64GB version features a $75 discount. The biggest discount is on the 128GB model, which is on sale for $100 off the suggested retail price. Though the example above mentions only the WiFi-only model, Best Buy's graduated discount applies to both the WiFi-only and cellular versions of the tablet devices. The end date for this limited-time promotion is unknown so you'll want to make your purchases sooner rather than later. This is a rather unusual sale as Apple products, especially the new models, are rarely discounted. And when they do go on sale, you typically don't off see a $100 price drop on the hardware. • Meta Knight Amiibo exclusive to Best Buy, Lucario to Toys R Us

Where's the fun in collecting something if you can just place a one-and-done order for the entire set with an online retailer? Amiibo fans are in for some legwork (or a few extra clicks), as two more retailer-exclusive deals have been announced concerning February's batch of Amiibos: Meta Knight will reside exclusively at Best Buy, whereas Lucario can only be found between the tall shelves of Toys R Us. This pair of exclusives follows news of Xenoblade Chronicles' Shulk continuing his series' GameStop-exclusive legacy when he arrives in the same set of Amiibos as Lucario and Meta Knight. At least existing partnerships are with mostly-easy-to-locate retailer chains – things will get a little more interesting with the announcement of an Ice Climbers Amiibo, which we assume will only be sold at a rickety shack atop Mount Everest. • Best Buy, Amazon offer Hyrule Warriors pre-order costumes

GameStop won't be the only retailer with special costumes for Link and friends when Hyrule Warriors battles for control of your Wii U on September 26. Best Buy and Amazon have also opened some special chests and ... Dun-dun-dun-DUN! ... have pulled out some exclusive costumes as well. Fans of the latest Legend of Zelda game should head over to Best Buy, where you'll get Skyward Sword-themed costumes for Link and Zelda when you pre-order the game. Those who prefer their Hero of Time to be a bit darker should opt for Amazon, which has Twilight Princess-themed costumes for the tunic-wearing swordsman and Hyrule's most-kidnappable princess. And don't forget, no matter where you pick up the game, if you're a Club Nintendo member who registers your copy before October 23, you'll receive two costumes for Zelda baddie, Ganondorf. • Pēq will let you control and automate your home for a monthly fee

Thinking about upgrading your home? There are plenty of home automation systems to choose from -- and now, there's one more. Pēq (pronounced 'peek') is a new smart home service designed to take the guesswork out of device compatibility by offering a store of self-branded products that integrate seamlessly with the system's central control hub. It's kind of like SmartThings, but with a monthly subscription fee. Pēq's $9.99 service gives users access to smartphone, PC and tablet control apps, the ability to receive e-mail or text message alerts, remote video streaming capabilities, automatic firmware updates and, of course, access to customer service seven days a week.

  • Best Buy offers buy one, get one free on Pokemon, Zelda, more

Those looking to catch 'em all might want to head down to and/or log on to Best Buy this week, as the store's current promotions include a buy one, get one free deal on select Nintendo 3DS games, including Pokemon X / Y. Of course, if you're less about monster wranglin' and more about helping manage the lives of your friends, the recently-released Tomodachi Life is also included in the promotion, as are quite a few other, quality titles. Here's the full list: Bravely Default, Disney Magical World, Kirby Triple Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Mario Golf: World Tour, Pokemon X, Pokemon Y, Tomodachi Life and Yoshi's New Island. "I don't have a 3DS," you say. "Best Buy is also offering $30 off the silver 3DS that comes with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team pre-installed," we say. "Also, it's amazing that we heard your spoken word through the internet when we're not connected to a call service," we say. Oh boy, maybe we're finally developing our mutant superpowers! Here, let's put it to good use: We foresee these deals ending on July 26. And we're definitely psychic, didn't just read that off Best Buy's website or anything. [Image: The Pokemon Company]

  • Symantec's COO credits his WoW credentials with boosting his resume

Symantec COO Stephen Gillett is proud of his past accomplishments, including high-ranking positions at Starbucks, CNET, and Best Buy. But it may be his level 70 Paladin and Priest in World of Warcraft that got him in the door and up that ladder. Gillett believes that adding his World of Warcraft guild leadership stats to his resume has helped him land these tops jobs. "Here's my guild. Here's my ranking. Here's my biggest online achievement," Gillett said in a CNN interview. "Some people look at it and say, 'What the hell is this?' And others will be like, 'That's exactly what I'm looking for.'" "I think gamification and the way of thinking about it is applicable to any industry," Gillett continued. "Right now we get really good information on malware -- what it does, how it acts. But we have no telemetry on the human part of it -- what people were doing, thinking and believing when they encountered that particular threat."

Smash-Fest" will be held at more than 100 Best Buy locations on June 11 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. and June 14 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. local time, giving players a chance to compete in four-person local multiplayer battles. • Sony, Samsung will square off with competing 4K-focused Best Buy store-in-store units

If you've been in a Best Buy recently you've certainly noticed a shift in approach from the big box shop of old to what's become a store filled with other stores. Depending on the layout, there's the Apple section, the Microsoft wing, the Samsung nook and most recently a Google endcap, all of which are about to be joined by Sony. Sony's getting back into retail in a big way after announcing plans to close two thirds of its remaining US stores just a few months ago, with "Sony Experience at Best Buy." They're starting with a relatively small rollout at around 350 locations (Samsung launched with 900 or so, Microsoft with 600) in the middle of this month, and like the other arrangements, will cluster Sony's latest products with staff specifically trained on how they work.

  • Zynga appoints former Best Buy strategist as CFO

Social-turning-mobile game studio Zynga has brought on David Lee, Best Buy's former senior vice president of enterprise finance, to serve as its Chief Financial Officer and Chief Accounting Officer. Lee will work with Mark Vranesh, Zynga's existing CFO and CAO, over the next month to help the transition go smoothly. In a comment on Lee's move, Zynga CEO Don Mattrick said that "David has a deep understanding of business management and a sharp financial acumen that will be invaluable to Zynga's long term growth and success." Lee will report directly to Mattrick, who left his role as Microsoft's interactive entertainment business president in July 2013. Mattrick's shift was followed by the departure of several Zynga executives, as well as studio co-founder Justin Waldron. With last year's closure of OMGPOP and several Zynga studios, Lee's talents certainly seem needed at the troubled development house. [Image: Zynga]

  • Killzone, Knack and other PS4 game deals at Best Buy

A $60 game is an expensive proposition, but you knock $20 off the price and things get tempting. Best Buy is looking to do just that with a PS4 launch game sale and is offering up Knack and Killzone: Shadow Fall for $40, with free shipping on all orders over $25. Best Buy is also knocking some ducats off Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4 (both the Standard and Limited editions) and Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition. All of these games are available for $50 with free shipping. While we'd have a hard time suggesting Knack for any price, Killzone: Shadow Fall is a tempting deal. In our review, we said Killzone: Shadow Fall has some interesting sci-fi moments but is ultimately a game residing on "the border between good and great."

  • iPhone 5s available at Best Buy for $125 through January 4

Though the holiday shopping season is behind us, there are still great deals to be had on Apple products. On that note, one of the best Apple deals I've seen in a while comes courtesy of Best Buy, where you can pick up a 16 GB iPhone 5s for just US$125. That's a solid $75 in savings and is actually a better deal than some of the Black Friday deals we saw a few weeks back. If you check out Best Buy's website, you'll notice that the deal applies across all carriers and includes all color variations of the 5s. If you're looking for a bit more storage than 16 GB, there's no reason to fret, as the $75 in savings is also available for other models. Specifically, the 32 GB iPhone 5s can be picked up for $225, while the 64 GB model can be picked up for $325. With respect to the iPhone 5c, the 16 GB model is available for free with contract, representing $100 in savings. The 32 GB iPhone 5c, meanwhile, is available for just $79.99, representing a solid $120 in savings. If you're in the market for a new iPhone, you'll be hard-pressed to find better deals than these anywhere else. The Best Buy promotion runs through January 4.

  • Best Buy's deal of the day discounts Gran Turismo 6, Saints Row 4

Best Buy is featuring discounts on two games as part of its sales for today only. Saints Row 4 is 40 percent off ($29.99) for both Xbox 360 and PS3, saving players $20 on the game's list price. Those that pick up the Xbox 360 version may want to act fast to get the game's season pass at a discount through Xbox Live, a separate deal that started yesterday. Additionally, Gran Turismo 6 is 33 percent off ($39.99) at Best Buy today. By comparison, Saints Row 4 is currently 33 percent off ($33.49) on Steam, a deal that lasts until January 2. The PC version of the game is not part of Best Buy's sale.

  • Best Buy unwraps five new Xbox One bundles in time for the holidays

Hoping that one of your loved ones has an Xbox One on his or her list, Best Buy has launched a new range of holiday bundles for Microsoft's console, including games, controllers and discounted Xbox Live Gold memberships. Pay a visit to Best Buy's website and you'll find five console bundles ranging in price from $530 to $650. The least expensive bundle includes an Xbox One console plus a year of Xbox Live membership, which cuts the price of the membership in half, from its standard $60 price point to $30. If you don't care for Xbox Live but thrive on local multiplayer, you may instead prefer the $560 bundle which includes the Xbox One console and an extra controller. Also priced at $560 is a bundle including the Xbox One console and a copy of Call of Duty: Ghosts. Keep in mind, neither of these last two bundles offer any discount over purchasing the included items individually. For $590 you can pick up a bundle including the console, the $30 Xbox Live Gold membership and an extra controller. Big spenders willing to drop $650 will receive all of the items listed above: the Xbox One console, the $30 Xbox Live Gold membership, an extra controller and Call of Duty: Ghosts. The best news here for last minute shoppers isn't the pricing, but when these bundles will be available. While you're unable to order these bundles on the site then pick them up in a Best Buy store, the retailer claims that these bundles will be "available for delivery by December 24" - just in time to celebrate the most holy of consumer holidays.
