Reader Angela loves herself some Brawl. And, so do her friends. The gang got together to celebrate the game's release by making themselves a Smash Bros.-themed cake. If there's anything we'd like to replace Falcon's punch with, it's definitely cake. We like cake.Angela, dear, nice job on including the DS in the picture. We have to ask, though. Why do you eat saltines with your cake? We usually go with the tried-and-true glass of milk.

While still gunning for a Halloween 2008 release, the developers of Dead Space managed to take some time off and bond through various culinary activities. In addition to a hot wings eating contest, executive producer Glen Schofield told MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo about a cake-baking contest the dev team held. Pictured above is the winner, Ishi-s'more-a, based on the Ishimura (pictured right). MTV will have (less) important details about the actual game later this week; check out the article for another tantalizing (and deathly) pastry.

When James sent in these images of a very awesome cake he made (gallery below), we were excited. Not only did the cake look amazing (seriously good job there, James!), but we were just glad to get an e-mail from someone. We get so cold and lonely, you see.Anywho, we had a lot of respect for James, up until he made one mistake: he ate the cake. We're not saying that delicious cakes (it was delicious, right?) shouldn't be eaten. We take every chance we get to eat delicious food. But something that is as skillfully crafted as this needs to be preserved and saved from consumption. Don't worry, though, we still love you James!Check out his cake in our gallery below.%Gallery-17936%

What can you really say about this? It's simply the most delicious looking 8-bit console we've ever laid eyes on. Now, if someone could just whip up an Xbox 360 hot-fudge sundae or Genesis-brûlée. Hey -- maybe for our next birthday?[Via technabob]

Well, it looks like we may have stumbled on the best Mario-themed cake on the planet. While not particularly the news megaton you were looking for today while cruising DS Fanboy, you still have to admit that this cake is pretty damn cool. Also, is there a better way to celebrate your 30th?Head past the break for some more shots of the cake.

If anything is going to restore our health out here in the real world, it's delicious food, not potions within reusable bottles (as sad as it is to say). But, then a huge problem pops up (for us at least) as we stare at this lovely cake that pays homage to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: can you eat something that looks so amazing? We imagine that cutting a cake like this, carving out a piece for ourselves then ingesting it would probably feel something like robbing the dead or stealing toys from orphans.Seriously, we don't know if our stomach could take the guilt of consuming something so beautiful.

Aikiwoce sent us this pic over on the WoW Insider tipline (here's ours, if you have a tip for us), but it was just too good not to share with you Massively-ers, too (Massives? Massivliers?). Love is in the Air has started up for Valentine's Day in the World of Warcraft, and there is a familiar-looking heart-adorned cube sitting outside of the major cities. Yes, anyone who's played Portal (not an MMO, but my choice for GotY last year-- it was a triumph, and a huge success) will immediately recognize this as a tribute from Blizzard to another terrific PC game.No wonder Wrath of the Lich King is taking longer than expected-- all the developers at Blizzard must have been spending all their time looking for cake.

Though we'd be GlaDOS can be to have another slice of Portal's topsy-turvy displacement gameplay, we'd almost certainly be unsatisfied with a quick 'n dirty content boost to our 2007 game of the year. Thankfully, Valve's Doug Lombardi has told Eurogamer that the developer isn't looking to simply throw a handful of new puzzles at us. "There'll be more Portal, for sure," he said. "But the details of that, to be honest, we're still working out."Also being worked out at Valve headquarters are the continuing adventures of crowbar-wielding physicist, Gordon Freeman, who's due to appear in Half-Life 2: Episode Three. "With Episode Three we want to live up to the promise of where we are taking things to; there's a lot of work being done to make sure we deliver on that promise." If you're dying to learn more about where said things are being taken to, you're going to have wait a bit, "probably months not weeks." And don't even get us started on how long you might have to wait for the actual game.At least you'll have some upcoming Team Fortress 2 content to keep you busy which, as per Valve's desire for all its additional content, will be free.

Well wishes are in order for the newest addition to Sony Online's family of Massive games. Vanguard turns one year old on January 30th, and the dev team is celebrating with in-game goodies for the players. Essentially, every character will be able to choose their one-year anniversary gift by deciding which of the game's three 'spheres' they want to explore.Adventurers will want to grab Avarem's Messenger Bag, which is not only a handy backpack but increases the running speed of the user. Diplomats will grab for Jansan's Valise of Ages, a satchel that increases their Presence in the diplomacy mini-game. Crafters, finally, will go for Silius' Enchanted Utility Pouch. Another container, this will increase the base crafting attributes for those who carry it.Veteran Vanguard players can expect to see titles entering the game soon, allowing folks who have stuck it out the entire time to show their Telon pride. The developers plan for there to be cake available in-world on the day itself, as yet another thank-you to the tried and true adventurers sticking it out in the little game that could.

  • Joystiq's Top 10 of 2007: Portal

    Ludwig Kietzmann

    01.01.2008

Out of all the superb titles released in 2007, Portal most effortlessly takes the cake. The true star of The Orange Box saw a talented team from DigiPen snatched up by Valve and ultimately transformed from students into teachers. Gamers and designers alike must play Portal, not only because it's so sublimely designed from start to gripping finish, but because there's so much to learn from it. The game is phenomenal in every sense of the word, its deviously delirious guide and antagonist, GlaDOS, already running rampant online as a fully fledged and infinitely quotable meme. It certainly speaks volumes of its witty writing when the game's other widely recognized star is nothing more than a vaguely endearing block. The intelligence isn't merely confined to the game's dialogue either -- it permeates every aspect of Portal's "Aha!" puzzles and perfectly paced progression. There is no filler here. When the seemingly unconnected room-based challenges give way to a daring escape attempt and a climactic showdown, the game's genius is not only revealed, but heard in the form of Jonathan Coulton's "Still Alive" ending song. Inescapably catchy and completely cognizant of its audience, it marks the perfect conclusion to this year's smartest and most focused game. Please accept our cake, Portal, but for the good of all of us, don't eat it! We don't want you getting fat like all those other games. %Gallery-12476%Joystiq's Top 10 of 2007 Portal BioShock Rock Band Super Mario Galaxy Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Halo 3 Assassin's Creed Peggle God of War II Mass Effect Please leave your comments below! To spread holiday cheer and to prove that the cake was not a lie, team Valve and everyone at Aperture Science sent along this video holiday greeting. And please, try not to be creeped out by the embedded video holiday card. It's just security camera footage of the Companion Cube (with a Santa hat) and a piece of cake sitting in front of a fireplace with a remixed holiday version of "Still Alive" playing in the background. Right? Actually, that is quite creepy ... but we love our Companion Cube so much so we'll overlook that and watch the video knowing that Aperture Science love us. Happy (holiday name here)!

We've managed to abstain from posting about video game-related cakes for a record seven weeks now -- mostly to avoid the hackneyed "The cake is a lie" comments that inevitably follow -- but we're breaking that streak today with this fondant-covered beauty. Chefs John Thai, Zack Ginies, and Lori Diaz baked this Boo Mario together, sprinkling the plate with 1UPs before sending him out to save his imprisoned brother. Isn't he adorable? Shake your Wii remote and float past the post break to see more photos of this haunting dessert. Make sure to avoid the swinging spotlights!

We love when people appreciate a mobile enough to immortalize it via sugary sculpture and this seems to be the case for this Sony Ericsson K850i created by Michelle Wibowo of Michellecakes for Carphone Warehouse. We've seen keepin' it real fake cake before, but this is far "sweeter" and definitely "takes the cake" -- all puns intended and double quoted for those that missed them, and yeah, we know -- for attention to detail. We're not sure about the back story here, but suffice it to say we really don't care as we're more interested in how we can get a slice of K850i and find something cool to have sculpted for us. Any ideas friends?[Thanks, Michael]

You've gotta hand it to Sony. This is, as far as our memory serves, the first time we've gotten a birthday cake for somebody else's birthday. Even more unique, that somebody is in fact ... a something! After a slight delay in acquiring the cake last night (it wasn't a lie), we didn't think fair to eat it and not do anything nice in return for our PS3, so we did the nicest thing we could think of. We fed it a birthday present: the deliciously moist Uncharted. All next week, our pen pals at PS3 Fanboy are celebrating the PStriple's birfday in style: they're giving away an 80GB PS3 and an Uncharted prize pack (with all sorts of cool Uncharted swag!), all wrapped up in commentary on the console's performance thus far.

Usually we're accustomed to turning over -- not receiving -- birthday cakes for others' super-special day, but Sony's PR team shipped out an unknown number of butter-cream frosting PS3 birthday cakes (with what appears to be an edible t-shirt iron-on) to press today. Well, your stunt worked Sony -- you got a post on Engadget, and again, happy friggin birthday. Now, who wants to come over to Engadget HQ for some cake and warm milk?%Gallery-10462%

We don't know exactly what Russel does, but his office received a cake from the fine folks at SCEA, celebrating the first birthday of PS3. While it looks pretty, supposedly it doesn't taste too great. Too bad! Of course, we're celebrating next Monday, in time for the launch of Uncharted.

Okay, during Zelda week, we said that after we had seen the ultimate in gaming cakes, we would never post another one again. Well, first of all, we lied, blatantly and outrageously. Still love us? Good. Second of all, this one has the whole first Super Mario Bros. level! C'mon, how could we resist? Short answer: we could not.We just hope none of the guests got the urge to smash any bricks ....
