Researchers see evolution working faster than expected (in chickens)
The word "evolution" tends to conjure up images of early hominids dodging predators on the veldt as they inch — agonizingly slowly — toward modern humanity. Most of those popular images of evolution are steeped in antiquity because, well, evolution takes ages, right? Well, a study conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford involving the humble chicken suggests evolution doesn't always take as long as you might think.
Scientists create chickens with dinosaur snouts to study evolution
How do scientists study the evolutionary transformation from snouts to beaks as those winged dinosaurs became birds? By putting dinosaur snouts on chickens, of course. A team of researchers at Yale were able to modify the chickens' genetic make up in a way that would make then grow a snout like their ancestors (similar to the Anchiornis model above) rather than the beaks we're all familiar with. The modification allows scientists to study the molecular foundations of the evolution. More specifically, they can examine the difference in bone structure and the genetic pattern birds exhibit that reptiles and mammals don't -- the one that causes a beak to form. Chicken hockey returns to Lord of the Rings Online
Even Hobbits need to pick on something smaller than they are, which is why the little folk (and the big 'uns too) are glad that they now can smack chickens across a field with a stick in Lord of the Rings Online. Hobnanigans, also known as "chicken ball" and "chicken hockey," is returning to LotRO for a limited time event. Teams can take to a special field in Bree-land to attempt to knock chickens through the opposing side's goal. The two teams at play are the Flying Feathers and the Steel Beaks. The current Hobnanigans event will take place from May 9th through 11th. The mini-game previously appeared in LotRO only once back in 2007.
Georgia Tech develops poultry deboning robot / chicken nightmare machine
If you have any chickens in the house, you're going to want to keep them away from the computer. Georgia Tech researchers have developed the device that will haunt their feathered dreams. The prototype Intelligent Cutting and Deboning System has a built-in 3D vision system in order to help it cut and debone a chicken. The robot uses collected data and custom algorithms to help reduce bone fragments and increase yield on birds, whilst ensuring that no fowl with ever get a full night's sleep again. The school has begun testing the system, as evidenced by the unfortunate bird picture above. Press release after the break, if you're not too chicken.
The Perfect Ten: MMO cataclysms
Today sees the launch of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, which represents a destructive "reboot" button on the world of Azeroth. The old has been made new by virtue of fiery explosions that have rent the very earth in twain, and WoW gamers will have to find their footing all over again. As you might imagine, it's made one big-ass mess, which is compounded by the fact that there are no janitor classes in the game to sweep it up (the next hero class, perhaps?). However, the notion of an in-game cataclysm is hardly the sole domain of Activision-Blizzard; on the contrary, large-scale apocalypses pop up all the time in MMOs. After all, nothing grabs the attention like the end of the world (but hey, you still feel fine)! In a list that in no way is meant to capitalize on any expansions that may or may not be on the market, we're going to strap on our Kevlar suits, slather our arms with 1000 SPF sunblock, and take a brief tour of 10 worlds that have dated cataclysms -- and lived to tell the tale.
Latest Upper Deck loot cards revealed, including El Pollo Grande
Boubouille over at MMO Champion has once again been ferreting around in the patch files and he's discovered the next set of loot from Upper Deck's next TCG expansion Fields of Honor which is due out on 30th June.There is a legend of El Pollo Grande, the scariest chicken in all of Azeroth, the black chicken of death. For years he has been the stuff of myth, summonable only by Niby the Almighty during a Felwood quest chain. Now, however, he has once again returned, this time as a mount. Yes, you heard me right, a giant chicken mount. This El Pollo Grande is not as dark or mean as his namesake, instead looking like a regular -- albeit giant -- chicken and will be an epic land mount. So if you've not yet reached level 60, then consider this your motivation.Also in the cards (see what I did there?) are an ogre pinata (which I'm surmising will be a BoP item with no charges, like the Goblin Weather Machine). Finally, for those of you who walked the Path of Illidan, there's the Path of Cenarius which leaves flowers in your wake. Nice.
One Shots: Fowl play
When we first heard about the mechanic to keep over-level players out of lower leveled RVR zones in Warhammer Online, we thought it was a creative way of dealing with potential griefing. Of course, a good sized group decided to get creative in return and figured that it would be fun to try overrunning a lower-level RVR area anyway. Today's One Shots was the rather strange result of it. Telenrion sent this in to us here with the following note: This was taken in the Warhammer Online T1 Open RvR area during Open Beta. An army of chickens showed up. They eventually attacked, and cornered a Magus. Whether one of them got the killing blow, only that chicken knows, but he did die in a mass of feathered fury. Now all we want is for dead chickens to drop drumsticks. Yum!Have you seen something bizarre in your gaming? Have you run a-fowl of a weird situation? First Impressions: Mabinogi
Mabinogi is an engaging MMO by Nexon, the makers of Maple Story, Audition, and Kart Rider. The name is derived from the Mabinogion, a collection of old Welsh stories. In that sense, it's well-named; Mabinogi is billed as 'your fantasy life', and much of what happens in the game follows a gentle, pastoral atmosphere -- even the combat, to a certain degree. We had the chance to check this out, now that it's in open beta, and here's what we found. Keep in mind that this is not a guide -- we have no insider knowledge to report. Friday Video: Super Cock Fight Brawl
Now, we would never condone any kind of thing that endangers animals. We aren't PETA or anything, but we have a respect for our friends in the animal kingdom. With that said, we present Super Cock Fight Brawl, a parody on this week's obsession in the Nintendo world. This video is just so ... weird. We're equal parts fascinated and confused by the video above. We know it was made for teh lulz and everything, but we're more focused on the individual that made it. Rumor: iPhone may get x86 processor, and pigs might fly
The Inquirer isn't just counting their chickens before they hatch -- they're counting all the feathers, the chicken feet, and even the eggs of those chickens, too. When we first heard that the slide you see above (reportedly from a CeBit presentation from Intel) apparently meant that Apple was going to put an Intel x86 "Moorestown" processor in the iPhone, we did a double take, and then a triple take (how is the iPhone not the one labeled "Premium Smartphone?"), and then we said, "they're kidding, right?"But no, apparently they weren't: Apple Insider has jumped on the x86Phone bandwagon as well (granted, they originally jumped in December of last year). It took Apple about ten years to decide to switch its computer line to Intel chips, but if you're willing to believe the reasoning on this one (and personally, I'm not), it's only going to take a tenth of that to decide that the iPhone needs an x86 chip, too.[Via Techmeme]
Warhammer dev: "It's time to iterate"
MMO Gamer has a great interview up with Josh Drescher, Senior Game Designer on Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, or WAR, as I like to call it. The two got to chat at E for All (the same place where our own Barb D. got to play the game), and Drescher gives a pretty good inside look at what it's like to be the team in charge of making the game that everyone but EA suspects might try to "kick WoW's arse."First up: the delay. Drescher doesn't go as far as Marc Jacobs in saying the delay was planned all along, but he does say that it was time to cool their jets and focus on what they had already, rather than bringing new stuff into the game. Drescher also touches on the "Realm vs. Realm" aspect of the PvP, and says he's excited to have a game where war is ongoing and front lines matter.Unfortunately, there are a few MMO conventions that even WAR can't get away from-- the starter quests are still FedEx and rat killing, and you can't actually go run and PvP right away. As Drescher so wittily puts it, "There's a Scrabble game in 1/3 of all American homes and yet new copies of it still ship with instructions." He also says that they are aiming for a fairly traditional PvP balance-- "not quite the paper-rock-scissors thing... [but] we're not going to give someone who can do a ton of damage heavy armor also." There is still some innovation, however-- high level players in lowbie areas will apparently get turned into chickens. Sounds good to me! Definitely check out the interview if you're at all interested in how WAR is turning out so far.
More Phantom Hourglass commercials for Japan, nothing for us
Whether it's shields or mini-sites, we can't seem to stop torturing ourselves with Phantom Hourglass news. We're actually physically pained by the fact that Japan will be receiving the game as early as next week; meanwhile, we're still waiting for a US release date to be announced, wallowing in self-pity with nothing but Destination Software's Chicken Shoot to look forward to. We want to chase chickens into corners, carry them over our heads, or even slash at them with a sword until a flood of poultry pour into our screens to defend their friend -- not shoot at them! We cry fowl at Chicken Shoot!Nintendo's latest commercial for The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass depicts a young girl finding clues, taking notes, and counting Link's steps to unlock one of the game's many secrets. Fight evil llamas and chickens in Death Jr. 2
Konami's Gamers Day has been very good to PSP owners. Gamespot (are they the only ones covering this event?) posted some new gameplay videos of Death Jr. 2 in motion. While I can't really see any HDR lighting in it, the game does look pretty sharp, and if Gamespot is to be believed, it does have advanced light blooming and shadow effects. Although my eye may not be trained to see the technical details, I do see that the quirky charm has been retained: there are crazy chickens that shoot lasers at you!!! They are far more vicious than the chickens of Zelda and clearly, they must be stopped.Watch - Fight against chickensWatch - Boss fight
