  • COD4 double XP extended an extra day

Many Xbox Live users trying to get their mitts on the new Variety Map Pack for Call of Duty 4 last Friday ran into some trouble. Some reported problems downloading the maps. Others apparently had problems even playing games on Xbox Live as a result of so many people attempting to download the maps at the same time. Understandably, this irked many gamers that were looking forward to earning double experience points over the weekend during COD4's double XP weekend. Good news then, as Infinity Ward's community guru fourzerotwo has made it known that the double XP weekend has been extended for another 24 hours. While concrete times aren't mentioned, he notes that the weekend has been extended to "Tuesday morning."[Thanks, ZEBRA NINER]

  • COD4 has its own Double EXP Weekend

Considering that their game is the most-played game on Live, it seems a bit strange that Call of Duty 4 would be taking cues from its defeated opponent. Yet to celebrate the release of the Variety Map pack, Infinity Ward is doing just that, taking a leaf out of Bungie's book and creating their very own version of the Double EXP Weekend. The COD4 weekend is a bit different than the Halo 3 system however. In Halo 3 the boosted EXP is limited to a specific playlist: Grifball. In Hal- er, we mean COD4, the EXP is doubled any time a match is played on the Variety DLC maps. So while you're effectively paying for the new EXP, it is good to see Infinity Ward taking preemptive steps to match anything that could lead to Halo 3 coming back to the top. Competition breeds excellence right? We have no info on whether or not the Double EXP Weekend will be a recurring thing with COD4, but the current one ends on Sunday at midnight.

With the Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack seemingly only moments away, we thought it prudent to post this video montage of the new maps from GameTrailers. Strangely absent from the footage is Chinatown and Killhouse, which represent the two biggest departures from the maps already available with Call of Duty 4. We still get plenty of footage from Broadcast and Creek, though. We particularly like the look of Broadcast, which looks like a big violent mess (in a good way). Enjoy the video, and remember that all this fun can be yours in time for the weekend (at the cost of 800 MS Points anyway).

  • COD4 DLC confirmed to hit April 3rd/4th

Apparently the guys over at the Infinity Ward studios heard that the internet was up in arms (and we even knew what day it was too) over the news that the Call of Duty 4 Variety DLC might be delayed by a week. In response to the internet craziness, their resident community guy, IAMfourzerotwo, took cahrge and implied directly that the whole thing really was an April Fools day joke and that we can all expect to be seeing the maps go live on the night of the 3rd or early in the morning on the 4th. Despite what any "official sources" might have to say about it, IAMfourtzerotwo notes that the news also goes for those players who had any kind of redemption code (GOTY buyers, etc). Fourtzerotwo mentions as well that the GOTY website will soon be changed to dispel any remaining confusion. Good news all around, and looks like we'll be playing new maps before the weekend gets here!

  • Infinity Ward reassures Call of Duty 4 map pack coming this week

So it turns out the Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack is coming out this week, after all. Despite the official COD4 Game of the Year website decreeing an April 10 release date for the downloadable content, Infinity Ward's blogger extraordinaire fourzerotwo posted reassurances today that the map pack is "NOT delayed" (his emphasis) and that there's a good chance the maps will be available tomorrow night or early Friday. "For those of you asking when you should take off work, I'd take off Friday," he said. It's a good thing we at Joystiq can work and play Call of Duty 4 (we're spoiled like that ... and ambidextrous). For those with the Game of the Year Edition, the provided tokens will work as soon as the maps become available.

The Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack will not hit this week like planned. Instead, that April 3 or 4 date has been pushed back to April 10, according to the official Game of the Year Edition website. We're betting this is the real deal, despite today's notoriety. If it's Activision's or Infinity Ward's idea of an April Fools' prank, then we're a bit disappointed by the lack of effort.[Via X3F]

  • COD4 DLC delayed until the 10th, April Fools?

    by

    04.01.2008

Considering the day that it is, we would usually have immediately discarded this news had it not come right from the official Game of the Year site. That site is now listing the Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack for release on April 10th, rather than the previously scheduled date of April 3rd. This could just be Infinity Ward using the date to give its audience a bit of a scare at April Fools' expense, as the other official site has no date at all for the DLC, nor news about its delay. Combined with the fact that the GOTY edition is still set to release on the third, and the fact that the GOTY site doesn't appear to have full functionality, it seems unlikely that this news is accurate. Though of course there is still that possibility, as this is a rather humorless joke and we like to think that Infinity Ward is capable of something much funnier.[Via Exophase]

  • Call of Duty 4 online play is 'monstrously huge'

PS3 Fanboy's 2007 Game of the Year sure is a giant when it comes to online play. How huge is it? "Monstrously huge," according to Call of Duty 4 producer Mark Rubin. Although he was vague about the actual daily count of PSN CoD4 players, we imagine that the exact number shouldn't be too far behind the 1.2-1.3 million players on Xbox Live every day. He stated that "PS3 numbers are monstrously huge. No other game has come close, either online current, or total unique users in a day." He continues to say that this trend has been carrying on for the past couple of month, seven days a week. Since Mr. Rubin can't provide a number for us, we'll have to start tallying for ourselves. How many of you are feeding the monster?[Via Joystiq]

  • Call of Duty 4 multiplayer boasts 'monstrously huge' numbers

When Infinity Ward producer, Mark Rubin, told Eurogamer that the number of online users for the PS3 version of Call of Duty 4 was "monstrously huge," we can only assume he was referring to a beast of significant size and infinite terror -- which pretty much rules out those Pokemon things. Indeed, the multiplayer monster appears to be of the house-trampling, child-eating variety, with Rubin having declared, "No other game has come close, either online current, or total unique users in a day."The battle between Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 for Xbox Live supremacy was also mentioned, with the former shooter's "between 1.2 and 1.3 million users every day" trumping Bungie's slightly more spartan servers. As for the percentage of total game owners (over seven million at last count) that have taken their tactics online, Rubin describes the number as "startling." Who knew statistics could be so scary?

It says something when the best game being released this week is a re-release of a game that originally launched last November. Then again, it's not like it's that surprising. After all, the game in question is Call of Duty 4 and there is only one other game releasing this week. That game, if you just have to know, is Smash Court Tennis 3. No offense to Smash Court Tennis 3, but it's frickin' Call of Duty 4, right? Actually, to be more precise, it's Call of Duty 4 Game of the Year Edition. Not only do you get COD4 goodness, but also a token to download the Variety Map Pack free of charge. Heck of a deal, no?[Via Joystiq]

  • Infinity Ward: 1.3 million gamers play CoD4 daily [update]

    by

    03.31.2008

Update: Infinity Ward's 1.3 million number is referring to the average number of gamers (not games) that log onto Xbox Live daily to play CoD4. Apologies for the confusion. The Xbox Live supremacy mud-slinging gets taken to a new level today with Infinity Ward comparing how many Xbox Live gamers log in to play games of Call of Duty 4 versus its rival Halo 3. And let's just say there are bunches.Speaking to Eurogamer, Infinity Ward producer Mark Rubin revealed that nearly 1.3 million gamers games of play CoD4 each and every day via Xbox Live alone. That gigantic number eclipses Halo 3's gamer base which hovers around the 1 million mark every day. Rubin also wanted to make sure that we understood that the 1.3 million number was just gamers who play on the 360 and that "there's even more on the other platforms [PS3 and PC], but we just don't have the same numbering system. Overall, even without the other consoles, we are beating the competition."You hear that Halo 3 fanboys? You better start logging more games, gathering up your friends and relatives or claim Xbox Live defeat to your CoD4 conquerors. CoD4 has been high atop the Live leaderboards for the past few months now and has been getting cocky. And rightfully so.

Those who played through Call of Duty 4's somewhat punishing campaign will probably recognize the locale featured in the newest downloadable multiplayer map, "Broadcast", as the theater of operations for the single-player level "Charlie Don't Surf". While we wonder how the stage's apparent indoor focus will affect the usefulness of helicopters and airstrikes, we definitely dig the idea of having a stage dedicated to more intense close-quarters encounters. If you haven't played the game, and all this photorealistic gunplay bothers you, just imagine that the bullet-riddled station featured in Broadcast has a programming schedule composed only of "The Nanny" reruns and the few episodes of the short-lived prime time trainwreck, "Viva Laughlin". It makes all the violence a tad more justifiable.

Just as they did prior to Call of Duty 4's release back in October, Activision and Gamestop are hosting a Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack preview event that'll allow gamers to be the first to play the new Variety Map Pack DLC. The bad news is that only two events are being held in all of North America, one in New York and one in San Jose. But if you live in or around those cities, then make the jump to get all the details and head over to one of the two Gamestop events tonight to play the new DLC before its April 3rd release. Also, Gamestop will be handing out free goodies, holding a few giveaways and handing out Variety Map Pack redemption tokens to the first 100 attendees at each event. So, that alone may be worth the travel.

Infinity Ward' Fourzerotwo has announced on his blog that the Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack is coming to the PlayStation 3 approximately 21 days after the Xbox Live release. Given the 360 pack is expected April 3 or 4, that puts the PS3 release on or near Thursday, April 24. PlayStation 3 owners will pay the same $10 price for the four maps: Creek, Broadcast, Chinatown and Killhouse. Fourzerotwo also said they were working out the logistics to bring the maps to the PC. No word on a Call of Duty 4 "Game of the Year" edition for PS3 owners.

A page on Xbox.com has popped out of nowhere to announce that both the Call of Duty 4 Game of the Year Edition and the (heretofore unnamed) Variety Map Pack will arrive on April 3, a mere two weeks away. The new map pack will be available for 800 MS Points and includes the maps Creek, Broadcast, Chinatown and Killhouse. Also, don't forget that the game of the year edition of COD4 will include a token for a free download of the Variety Map Pack, so if you haven't picked up COD4 yet, you'll probably want to wait another two weeks.
