Crytek (Crysis, Ryse: Son of Rome) has temporarily shut down four of its sites due to "suspicious activity" and will require users to change their passwords once the sites are restored, an email sent to Crytek account holders stated today. The developer "acted quickly to take those websites offline for security reasons" notes an email sent to registered users of those sites, as reported by VG24/7. Crytek.com, mycryengine.com, crydev.net, and mycrysis.com were all taken offline in response to the activity.

A Crytek job listing outs the company's intent to bring its CryEngine 3 development suite to the Linux platform. The potential new recruit will be responsible for maintaining Linux support in the engine, providing training to internal and external developers and helping out with game prototypes. CryEngine 3 is Crytek's latest iteration of its proprietary game development solution, an engine the company both licenses out to other game developers and supplies to universities. Some notable upcoming games being built in CryEngine 3 include Shadow of the Eternals and Star Citizen.

The penguin has been getting awfully cozy with game developers lately. This time it's with the company known to make GPUs melt at the faintest whisper of its name: Crytek. According to a recent job listing, the German shooter shop is looking for a programmer to work on a Linux version of CryEngine. Of course, you need to relocate to Deutschland and have a few years experience in software development under your belt. Seeing another major PC studio devoting resources to the open-source OS only increases the growing momentum for Valve's Steambox ecosystem of choice. To answer the eternal question, it appears that yes, even the Tux can run Crysis.

  • Crytek dips its beautiful toes into iOS waters with 'The Collectibles'

Crytek is building an overhead, tactical action game called The Collectibles for iOS devices, 9 to 5 Mac reports. Crytek demoed The Collectibles at WWDC last week, played with a new, MFi-supported controller, the site says. MFi is Apple's new program that opens up the iOS SDK for game controller hardware and accessories. The Collectibles has players command a team of five through the ruins of war in a jungle environment, as shown by a series of screenshots with the report. The Collectibles allows for touchscreen or controller play, or both simultaneously for some features. The Collectibles doesn't officially exist yet. Crytek's most recent foray into our headlines was with Ryse: Son of Rome, a third-person action game coming to Xbox One. We got a chance to play it during E3 and found it more aggressive than expected.

  • Crytek showed off a new iOS title called The Collectibles at WWDC

Crytek is the company behind the Crysis series of games, as well as the CryEngine game engine that powers them, and it's released a game on iOS before. Now, it looks like the AAA developer is planning to make a return to Apple's touchscreen platform, with a new game called The Collectibles (or The Collectables, depending on who you hear about it from). Last week at WWDC, Crytek showed off the new game during a panel, and as you can see above, the game looks like a top-down action title, probably a shooter of some description. The other interesting thing you'll notice about the game is that the developer demoing it was using a controller. iOS 7, you'll remember, adds official Apple support for "Made for iPhone" controllers, and we've already seen this hardware leaking out into the world. There have already been a number of third-party controllers available for iPhone and iOS devices, but it looks like Apple is finally supporting buttons officially, and Crytek's game might be one of the first titles to work with this new standard. The game also uses the touchscreen, however, so you probably won't absolutely need to have a controller just to play. Of course, that probably also means we won't see The Collectibles in action until iOS 7 is out, which means sometime later on this year. Hopefully we'll get a chance to see the game in action sooner rather than later.

When I saw Crytek's Ryse: Son of Rome demonstrated during Microsoft's E3 press briefing, I was worried. The once Kinect and now controller-driven game, apart from being visually impressive thanks to an Xbox One upgrade, looked pretty generic. When I sat down to play it at an event later that night, I learned something that improved my outlook dramatically: Ryse has no block button. It's still too early to tell whether or not Ryse's hack-and-shield-bash combat will hold up over the course of an entire game, but this one simple fact is enough to give me hope.%Gallery-191091%

With Microsoft's Xbox One hardware reveal out of the way, the company's shifting focus to its launch lineup. And here at E3, we got a first look at just what the One is capable of with Crytek's previously announced Ryse: Son of Rome. The game, an exclusive for the platform, lets players take control of a Roman General and features gameplay that'll have players slashing through hordes of warriors, engaging in quick time events, all set in the Roman Empire. From what was demoed on stage, Ryse looks to be a technically impressive feat, showcasing strong particle effects, lighting and a massive number of onscreen characters. It'll be available as an XBox One launch title, so if you're planning on a pre-order for MS' next-gen console, this is a future purchase worth considering. "But the Gods know what once was can be again," an English narrator says of Ryse: Son of Rome, the upcoming Xbox One game from Crytek. The game stars Roman general Marius Titus. The reveal then cut to a beach invasion, showing a squadron of Roman soldiers assaulting an entrenched enemy force. Eventually, a Roman soldier squares off against a Barbarian in one-on-one combat, revealing contextual kills and a parry system. Ryse: Son of Rome will be an Xbox One exclusive and available at the console's launch.

Crytek has a reputation for pushing the limits of hardware with CryEngine -- witness the will-it-run-Crysis jokes -- so it's only logical that the company would leap on new consoles with enthusiasm. Sure enough, the company has followed up talk of Xbox One support in CryEngine 3 with word that its extra-pretty engine will also run on the PlayStation 4. Crytek isn't saying which developers will use the code, although cross-platform games make sense when the PS4, Xbox One and PCs share the same basic x86 architecture. We may hear bit more about early partners next week.

For how advanced CryEngine 3 looks, we had just assumed it would jive with PS4, but today Crytek has confirmed it. Developers anxious to create a PS4 game can get rolling with CryEngine 3 starting today with the latest SDK, featured in the video above. The PS4 announcement indicates all consoles will support CryEngine 3 going forward. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli confirmed CryEngine 3 runs on Wii U in addition to Xbox One.

Crysis 3: The Lost Island, a multiplayer downloadable content pack, will be available June 4 for $15 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The pack includes four new maps, two new multiplayer modes and some additional weapons. "By transporting players out of the Liberty Dome and into the Lost Island setting, we're not only returning to Crysis' spiritual roots, but also introducing fresh ways to play that provide Crysis 3 fans with genuinely game-changing new tactical options," said Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek. Crytek's 'Kinect-enhanced' brawler Ryse is exclusive to the Xbox One. The game, previously confirmed as exclusive to Xbox platforms, is revealed for the Xbox One by a countdown on Crytek's site, which is set to end on June 10 - that happens to match up with E3 time. The countdown also features the year 2013 in Roman numerals, perhaps pointing to the game being released this year for the new console. A blurb on the countdown reads, "Fight as a soldier. Lead as a general. Rise as a Legend," and the game is described as "controller-based gameplay enhanced by Kinect." We'll have more details on Ryse for Xbox One as we learn them.

A new achievements listing suggests Crysis 3 is suiting up for multiplayer DLC. Posted on the typically reliable Xbox 360 Achievements, the listing indicates a 250G pack featuring four maps called Creek, Crossing, Ascent, and Coastline, and two modes called Frenzy and Team Possession. The mention of a flag points to Team Possession being a CTF variant. The DLC apparently also has a new weapon: the boat oar. We mainly wanted to mention it because the associated achievement is called 'Totally Oarsome.' EA hasn't announced any upcoming DLC for Crysis 3, although developer Crytek previously indicated it had "big plans" for post-launch content. We've reached out to EA for more info.

Crytek USA Corp. CEO David Adams revealed his company will bid on the Darksiders IP when it's auctioned next month. Posting on Twitter, Adams said the property "belongs at home with its creators," referring to himself and the other 35 ex-Vigil employees at the recently-formed Crytek USA studio. Darksiders creator Vigil was shuttered by now defunct publisher THQ.Ryan Stefanelli, Crytek USA principal designer and Vigil co-founder, furthered Adams' comments. Talking to Destructoid, Stefanelli said, "When the Darksiders IP goes up for auction, Crytek will be bidding for it. Not much more to say since the rest is left up to courts and legal shenanigans, but we're all excited at the prospect."The IP, which comprises the two Darksiders games, goes up for sale on April 1 in THQ's back catalog auction, with bidding ending on April 15. Other properties in the impending auction include Homeworld and Red Faction.

  • Crytek-approved TimeSplitters fan project gets title, preliminary details

A dedicated group of TimeSplitters fans have taken it upon themselves to create a new, free game for like-minded folks: TimeSplitters Rewind. Developed with permission from CryTek and using assets from actual TimeSplitters games as reference material, Rewind is being constructed in CryEngine 3 and will focus primarily on multiplayer. While there is no further visual evidence of the game beyond the above logo and this rendered duck person, project manager Michael Hubicka has stated that a demo for Rewind should be available by Christmas. "The demo will be more or less a beta," Hubicka told Cooking with Grenades. "We plan to release patches to fix glitches/bugs/exploits/performance issues and Content Updates to add maps and characters."Eventually, Hubicka hopes that Rewind will also include remade versions of the single-player story content from TimeSplitters' history, but the initial goal of the project is to faithfully recreate the most well-known multiplayer components within CryEngine 3. New multilpayer modes are in the works, however, though their eventual inclusion will depend on if the end result "feels right."

  • Crysis 3 keeps its cool to top UK charts for second week

Crysis 3 is the first 2013 release to hold top spot in the UK charts. Despite a 43 percent dip in sales this week, Crytek's sci-fi shooter leads the pack again. As for last week's runner-up, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance drops a place to No 3 after a 60 percent fall in sales, while soccer stalwart FIFA 13 nudges ahead of it into second place. With no major new releases, this week's charts paint a familiar, almost serene picture. Aliens: Colonial Marines and Dead Space 3 only suffer slight drops to make it three and four weeks respectively in the top ten, while lower down the charts Ni no Kuni shows it's still got life in its JRPG veins by returning to the top 40 in 25th spot.

  • Yerli: Crysis 3 was up and running on Wii U, was 'very close to launching'

Crysis 3 rode the Wii U teeter-totter throughout 2012, with Crytek executives hinting at the possibility of development for Nintendo's console, maybe, until CEO Cevat Yerli put all the rumors to bed in January. At the time, Yerli said Nintendo and EA talked it over but couldn't work out a deal.Turns out that while Nintendo and EA talked shop, Crytek was doing more than twiddling its thumbs – it had Crysis 3 almost ready to lauch on the Wii U."We did have Crysis 3 running on the Wii U," Yerli tells Venture Beat. "We were very close to launching it. But there was a lack of business support between Nintendo and EA on that. Since we as a company couldn't launch on the Wii U ourselves – we don't have a publishing license – Crysis 3 on Wii U had to die."We'd like to think its death was quick and painless, but one year of touch-and-go doesn't sound like either of those things.

Crysis 3 prevailed over Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in the battle of the tightly-suited killing machines, taking top spot by a mere 5,500 copies in this week's UK charts. It's the first week of the year to see two major releases go head to head, and while Crysis 3 had PC sales in its corner, digital purchases don't count towards Chart-Track's data.Unsurprisingly given the series' roots, the PS3 was the lead platform for MGR: Revengeance, coming in at 61 percent. Xbox 360 sales dominated Crysis 3's retail performance with 57 percent of the share.Dead Space 3 made it three weeks in the top ten, dropping to sixth, while last week's leader, Aliens: Colonial Marines, pipped the space horror to fifth place. Meanwhile, early 2013 chart successes Ni no Kuni and DmC: Devil May Cry left the top 40 altogether.

Do you really think Crysis 3's Prophet cares what a bunch of reviewers think of his game? Yeah, the guy in the multi-million-dollar Nanosuit is going to waste his time reading the opinions of some people on the Internet. Come on!But if you're not Prophet then why not take a quick glance at what those other reviewers had to say? And don't forget to read our review too, you scallywag! Game Informer (85/100): "This impressive graphical fidelity takes a serious hit in the transition to multiplayer. Though Crysis 3 has some of the better-designed maps in the series, the muddied textures are a far cry from the jaw-dropping visuals of the single-player campaign, especially on consoles." IGN (85/100): "It's not quite a next generation experience come early, but it's a superbly controlled, tightly paced and tactically flexible shooter with a satisfyingly focused story, and an excellent way to tie up the Crysis series... for now." Destructoid (75/100): "Crysis 3 attempts to strike a balance between Crysis and Crysis 2, but in doing so manages to lose a little bit of what made each game appealing. The result is a title that doesn't truly match the open-ended excitement of the first game nor the revelatory empowerment of the second, yet manages to provide enough of both to at least tantalize, even if it doesn't completely satisfy." GamesRadar (70/100): "A gratifying shooter experience. Even though the campaign is on the shorter side, there are a few visual hiccups, and some of the enemy AI is unbalanced, those small gripes get overshadowed by Crysis 3's tactical gameplay, beautiful environments, and superb online multiplayer. While not treading new ground for the FPS genre, Crysis 3 is a solid shooter." VideoGamer (60/100): "By the end of the game I was bored silly, and considering the scope of what was going on that shouldn't have been the case. Sadly, bar a few exceptions – a Jurassic Park-style hunting section in long grass, an open-ended assault on Ceph AA emplacements – I'd rinsed and repeated the same thing so much that I couldn't care less."
