  • Microsoft moves 960K Xbox 360 consoles, 750K Kinect units 'week of Black Friday'

After clocking ten months as the top console on the NPD sales charts, Microsoft had little incentive to lower the price of the Xbox 360 this holiday. Instead, Redmond's strategy has been to partner with retailers to push sale prices, so frugal shoppers have no problem getting a deal while post-holiday pricing remains high so long as strong numbers continue. To that end, Microsoft just announced that it moved 960,000 consoles in the US "during the week of Black Friday." When asked if that included Cyber Monday, which had some notable Xbox sales of its own, we were told, "These numbers are from Saturday, Nov. 19 through Friday, Nov. 25 and do not include Cyber Monday." Still, without the unfortunately named Cyber Monday, this represents the "biggest week of sales in Xbox history," according to internal Microsoft numbers. Big whoop, right? What we're really curious about is Kinect. Will it manage to be one of this holiday's "must-have" gifts for a second year in a row? Considering Kinect moved an equally impressive 750,000 units in the US across standalone and bundled offerings, we're inclined to say it's getting there.

  • Beyond Good & Evil HD heavily discounted on Xbox Live today

Third-person photo shooter Beyond Good & Evil HD is the star discount in today's (hnnggghhh) "Cyber Monday" sale on Xbox Live. It's down from 800 MSP ($10) to 240 MSP -- that's $3 for one of last generation's most charming and thoughtful adventures. If you find the lack of inverted camera bothersome, perhaps you can put some of today's savings toward brain inversion surgery. It'll be worth it! Xbox Live is also discounting three other games for today only: An assembly of three klassic fighters in Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection (400 MSP / $5), ol' sale standby Risk Factions (200 MSP / $2.50), and a game that's awesome in alliteration only, Dungeons and Dragons: Daggerdale (600 MSP / $7.50).

  • Cyber Monday app sales: Tom Tom USA, Age of Zombies, a few more

Did you buy anything good this weekend? It's now Cyber Monday, and the App Store sales continue. I have to say, these aren't quite as good as what we saw last week (though some of those are still going on), but there are still a few solid purchases here if you're looking to load up a new iOS device. Halfbrick's original Age of Zombies dual-stick shooter is down to just 99 cents. Double puzzle game Cohabit is on sale for the low price of free. Overhead racing game Tiny Cars is free today as well. Tom Tom USA is offering its usually very expensive software for a relatively generous price: $31.99. Cordy is an "exploratory platformer" that's free to download, with an in-app price that's been lowered to 99 cents for iPhone and $2.99 for the iPad. As mentioned this morning, Hothead's Sea Stars is free for the next few days. And freemium puzzle title Monster Island is offering a sale on in-app purchases. Slim pickings on new sales today, but some of those older sales are still on. And don't worry -- the biggest sales of the year on the App Store tend to show up around Christmas, which is when all of those new iPhones and iPads purchased this past weekend actually show up in consumers' hands, and start filling up with all of these apps. Stay tuned.

Origin may be the new kid on the block, but that doesn't mean it was born yesterday. EA clearly realizes that its digital-only game service needs to compete with the other digital retailers, as evidenced by its overtly aggressive pricing on today's Cyber Monday sales: Battlefield 3 for $30, as well as Need for Speed: The Run, not to mention package savings that rival Steam's. Beyond the games available for PC, a variety of the publisher's iOS slash mobile titles are also getting deep cuts, all of which end around midnight tonight. If you were waiting patiently for a heavily discounted copy of Risk for your iPad, now is the time!

The pandemonium of Black Friday has now subsided, leaving Amazon with nothing but a big grin and stellar sales. According to the retailer, the Kindle Fire dominated this year's one-day extravaganza, standing proud as the top-selling product across all of Amazon.com and the best-selling tablet at Target. Amazon also claims to have sold four times as many Kindle products as it did during last year's post-Thanksgiving rush, though it didn't divulge any precise figures -- Cyber Monday, after all, is far from over. Head past the break for the full PR.

Sick and tired of your neighbor Steve Grabowski always showing off with his fancy Pac-Man Championship Edition on iPhone? First and foremost, tell Grabowski to shove it, but more importantly, know that you'll soon be able to afford your very own copy. Namco's Thanksgiving Week slash Black Friday slash Cyber Monday iOS sales are offering dramatically discounted versions of excellent games like Pac-Man CE and Galaga Remix, and the deals kick off at 12AM PST today ... so they're totally live right now. Said deals shall stay that way through November 28, just before midnight PST. At very least, the discounted wares should give you a brief reprieve from that jerk neighbor.

Appealing to those of us who prefer not to risk physical harm in order to secure some sweet deals, Toys R Us has announced its plans for Cyber Monday (AKA the Monday following Black Friday) and the ensuing "Cyber Week." For starters, the retailer will actually begin its online discounts beginning on Sunday, November 27 at 6pm Eastern. There are only a handful of gaming deals, though they are fairly substantial. First up for grabs, a free game, controller or headset ($59.99 or less) with the purchase of a $300 4GB Xbox 360 Kinect bundle. Also, Toys R Us will offer a "buy one, get one 60 percent off" discount on "hundreds of video game titles," though the press release doesn't specify which titles are included. Finally, starting on Monday at 8am Eastern, those who pick up the $200 3DS Mario bundle will get a free Skylanders starter pack (normally $70). As the "cyber" implies, these deals will only be available through ToysRUs.com, though store pick up is available on certain items. Shipping is also free on orders over $49.

  • Apple's Cyber Monday sale cuts prices on accessories

    11.29.2010

The second half of the Apple Store one-two punch of weekend discounts hits today, as the company is offering savings on select accessories and peripherals like the Twelve South Compass stand for iPad (featured in our recent gift guide). Considering that the store isn't necessarily known for everyday low pricing, these sale offers aren't really spectacular savings; there are a few exceptions, however. The M-Audio KeyStudio 49 MIDI keyboard connects to your Mac with a single USB cable and works out of the box with GarageBand and other music apps; it's $70 today, which is a solid $20 off of the price you'll find elsewhere. The Beats by Dr. Dre Beatbox (a solid replacement for the lamented iPod Hi-Fi) is $40 off; it's also hard to find for less than $390 usually. The Panasonic HM-TA1 HD camcorder (with support for the iMovie-friendly iFrame video format) can be found for $140 elsewhere, but the white color is exclusive to Apple; it's $17 off today. Also on the special offer sheet today: free signature gift wrapping, to put the final touch on your iPod touch.

  • AirPrint for less: Deals on HP printers for Cyber Monday

    by
    Michael Rose
    Michael Rose
    11.29.2010

Given the options for getting AirPrint working with your existing gear, it's probably not necessary to run out and get a brand-new printer just to enable output from your iOS 4.2-enabled iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. If you actually need a new printer, however, it's worth considering whether one of HP's AirPrint-ready models is suited to your printing lifestyle. For Cyber Monday, HP is offering instant rebates on all the Photosmart inkjets that are qualified for AirPrint use. While HP's press materials indicate that all of the company's ePrint-capable printers will eventually work with AirPrint, only about 10 printers are ready for iPad printing out of the box or with currently shipping firmware (full list here). Of those, almost all of these are discounted for Cyber Monday, ranging from US$30 off the budget Photosmart D110a (for a total cost of $70) up to $50 off the C510a and $100 off the A910n. All models include free standard shipping for the sale event. Chances are, if you've got an educational or EPP (employee purchase program) discount, you'll be able to shave a few more dollars off these prices. Our colleague Laura Heller at WalletPop suggests checking price aggregator sites like Fatwallet.com or Dealnews to verify that you're getting the best deal, and make sure that your local office equipment chain (OfficeMax, Staples, etc.) won't beat the price.
