Deadmau5 is no longer on Twitch

EDM artist Deadmau5 (aka Joel Zimmerman) has deleted his Twitch account after the service apparently suspended his channel over a homophobic slur. When he was streaming PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds this week, he reportedly called out another player with the insult when he suspected them of watching his stream to find his character's location in the battle royale game.

Electronic musician Joel "Deadmau5" Zimmerman is stripping down his sound and adding string instruments to his army of synths for a Tidal-sponsored "Where's the drop?" concert next month. Tidal subscribers can jump in on today's pre-sale, while the general public will be able to buy tickets starting tomorrow. The concert takes place April 1st (no foolin') at Los Angeles' historic Wiltern Theater. In case you forgot, Zimmerman is a one of the service's artist-owners, along with Jay Z, Jack White and Daft Punk.

In the picture above, you'll spot Joel Zimmerman's alter ego, Deadmau5, standing side by side with Kanye West. Last night, the rodent-headed musician was putting a little distance between him and his Tidal buddy, for apparently using Pirate Bay to download a software synthesiser called Xfer Serum (a $190 purchase). Deadmau5 was responding to a tweet from West that simply read "Day 3," along with a screen shot of what he was listening to (Sufjan Stevens' "Death with Dignity"). Zimmerman noticed West's other browser tabs in view, which included one for Xfer Records' Serum, one for "Pirate Bay Torrent Xfe..." and another for "The 50 best VSTs" (software instruments). Oh, and the surest giveaway you're browsing something dodgy: MacKeeper.

  • TwitchCon made me a Twitch convert

I'm going to admit this right up front: I wasn't looking forward to covering the first-ever TwitchCon. Sure, I co-host our weekly Playdate broadcasts and absolutely adore talking with our community of regulars who show up three times per week to watch us play games, but outside of that, I didn't spend time on Twitch. My worry for TwitchCon was that I'd be trapped inside Moscone West in San Francisco with thousands of screaming "personalities" -- like the guy I'd watched (for approximately 45 seconds, max) shout and swear his way through Choice Chamber, for an entire weekend. That all changed after attending a number of panels and talking with some of the biggest broadcasters on the service. This first show was one of the best events I've been to for work, period. And I recently found myself doing something I never thought: watching Twitch for fun.

Ever notice that conspicuous green glow radiating off of Deadmau5's desk during his Twitch streams? There's a reason for that. It turns out the artist has been working with Razer to help launch a new music service -- one tailored specifically to promote and educate artists that use the company's gaming hardware for music production. It's called Razer Music, and it launches today.

If it weren't for Deadmau5's terrible broadband speeds, he wouldn't be on Twitch, the live video-streaming site favored by gamers. Prior to moving to the Canadian countryside just outside of Toronto and building "a goddamned death ray" in his back yard to get paltry 5 Mbps downloads, the electronic musician, whose real name is Joel Zimmerman, had relied on a gigabit connection to broadcast music-making sessions in 2K resolution using his own data service provider. "The quality was pretty comparable [to Twitch], but I didn't have a social network behind it to help it along," he said during an interview from the first-ever TwitchCon. Now his TriCaster streaming setup is as good as "a $50,000 doorstop," and he instead uses the open-source OBS streaming software to broadcast games like Rocket League, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive; and studio recording sessions from his basement like the rest of us.

  • Electronic artist deadmau5 releases subscription music app for iOS

The music business landscape has changed over the last fifteen years from physical media to mostly digital transactions. Be it the iTunes store or streaming online, the way we consume music has radically changed. Accordingly, the way artists profit off their music has changed as well. Electronic music superstar deadmau5 has just debuted a new subscription based app exclusively for iOS. For $5 a month, users get access to new music, live streams, chat boards, and other random bonuses. It's sort of like a fan club, but with more actual content. Subscribers can pay monthly or for a whole year for $4.99 per month or $44.99 per year. Here's what the app promises for your scratch: * Live Video deadmau5 will be able to broadcast live to the horde from anywhere in the world ∗ Audio Player Listen to unreleased music while managing your custom playlist ∗ Chat Room Chat directly with deadmau5 or other members of the horde. ∗ Message Boreds Share and post topics and initiate discussions with the horde or deadmau5 ∗ Photos See exclusive images from backstage, behind the scenes, and much more ∗ Videos With no limit on length, deadmau5 can share raw or edited videos with you from all over the world ∗ WTF? Learn the candid thoughts from deadmau5 ∗ Private Messages Like never before, deadmau5 may be contacting you directly by email, phone or text Given the hunger in the electronic music market for new content this is a brilliant idea, if deadmau5 can keep his "horde" properly fed. Fans may not want to buy an album with songs they don't want to hear a hundred times, but if you're providing a steady stream of brand new music they've got a reason to sign up. I can't count the number of parties I've been to where the DJ was a iPhone hooked up to a speaker. It will be interesting to see if deadmau5 can keep enough content flowing to keep subscribers in the long run. On the video end of things, the clips on the app are equal parts beautifully shot live footage, interviews, behind the scenes content and shaky smartphone shots. The app itself is free to download, with a block of videos and pictures available as a preview of sorts before you buy a subscription. You can find it now in the app store.

  • Odelay! Beck conributing three new tracks to Sound Shapes

The synaesthetic platforming of Sound Shapes is getting bolstered by three tracks from pseudo country/hip-hop/folk/whatever artist Beck, Billboard reports. "Cities," "Spiral Staircases," and "Touch the People" will apparently each get their own levels in this August's PlayStation 3/Vita game. All three tracks are brand new for Sound Shapes, rather than from Beck's lengthy discography.Beck joins co-developer I Am Robot and Proud (Shaw-Han Liem), Sworcery composer Jim Guthrie, and notoriously game-centric DJ Deadmau5 on the game's soundtrack, which, like, it's gonna be a super good soundtrack, right? We totally agree. When the Deadmau5 collaboration was announced, Queasy Games told us that his tracks weren't just implemented into game levels, but also part of the game's level editor, allowing players to break apart the track and use it to create a soundscape behind the platforming. It stands to reason that Beck's tracks will also get this functionality, making this news all the more thrilling.[Image credit: Flickr user 'lizzk']%Gallery-160640%

Sound Shapes' levels are presented in an "album" format, with each collection of levels having a distinct look and sound. This video features a demonstration of an "album" whose sounds are provided by Deadmau5, a musician respected enough to get away with having a number in his name, and whose shapes are designed by indie developer Pixeljam.Check out the collaboration above, and start thinking of how you can use those visual and musical elements to make your own levels.

  • Made in Toronto: Deadmau5 collaborating with Queasy on Sound Shapes

When electronica artist Deadmau5 isn't busy hanging out with famed game developer Shigeru Miyamoto, or tricking tweeters into thinking he lost an early retail PlayStation Vita, he's teaming up with Queasy Games to handcraft tracks for upcoming Vita game Sound Shapes. He likely does other things, sure, but we're not privy to that. An announcement this morning revealed the partnership -- apt given the studio's Toronto roots alongside Deadmau5. As if the collaboration couldn't be more serendipitous, Queasy Games head Jonathan Mak has been building Sound Shapes alongside Shaw-Han Liem, otherwise known as "I Am Robot and Proud," a Toronto-based electronic music artist. When asked about the collaboration, Liem was modest, telling Joystiq, "There is no special history between myself and Deadmau5, other than the fact that we both come from the Toronto/Canadian electronic music scene, which is quite small!" He related the collaboration to Queasy's work with Capy Games, the indie studio responsible for Critter Crunch and Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, among other things. "We know that he plays games, and indie games in particular - he's a fan of 'Sword & Sworcery'," Liem told us. It's not clear how many tracks from Deadmau5 will end up in the title, but we'll find out in the not-too-distant future as Sound Shapes launches some time in 2012 for the PlayStation Vita. It also sounds like players will have a chance to cut up said tracks for level creation, as Liem concluded, "We've always had the goal of making the musical 'toolset' something that is flexible and that people can use to make different kinds of music. Adding Deadmau5 to the mix gives people a whole new set of musical tools to work with, which is totally exciting to us." [Image credit: Facebook]

Work warning: Mild cursing in this video, especially near the end. This is an odd combination of music, voice tracks, and raid video. Take the time to check it out, though; Molly did a surprisingly good job of pulling it all together when you consider it's her first video. It was fun to watch, reminiscent of the best parts of the Firelands, and the voice bits go well with the music. Molly created this video as an homage to her raid group. What I especially liked were the layers of player dialogue and WoW's acting. I think this is an interesting genre that could be further developed. If you're not sure about the song, alt-tab and do some web browsing while you let it play. The effect is relaxing while still engaging. My hat's off to Molly. (As a note, she did use Deadmau5's song for a background track.) Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Deadmau5 (also known as Joel Zimmerman) is one of the largest names in the electronic and house music scene -- and he also happens to be a major tech head. Recently, the Canadian producer added some impressive new gear to his productions, in the form of a massive LED-covered cube and signature mau5head (that's pronounced "mouse-head" in case you couldn't guess). Read along after the break for an exclusive look at exactly what's going on inside the mind of deadmau5 -- both literally and figuratively.
