  • Joystiq hands-on: Devil May Cry 4 (PS3)

Devil May Cry 4 is only a month away from release and we were itching to sit down for a few hours and try out the final build. From what we've seen, the game has been polished so much we could almost see our faces in it. It's clear that DMC4 has benefited from being pushed back to early '08, if only because it now has the Q1 stage all to itself. The gameplay hasn't changed much since Devil May Cry 1, but fans of the series should see no problems with that. Having said that, numerous new features have been added, with Nero's crazy arm (used for grabbing, throwing and slamming, natch) reminding us of Evil Dead 2. That can only be a good thing, right? Its ability to cling onto nearby floating objects in order to reach higher places is ripped straight from Onimusha 3, though the timing based jump puzzles seen here make things a little different. One such puzzle requires you to hop across a spike-filled room by grabbing jump points that can disappear and reappear at random. Grab at the wrong time and the spikes will damage you, causing you to plummet into a room full of marionettes (those being the things trying to kill you most of the time) below. Did we fall? Maybe. Maybe we fell three times. So what if we did?%Gallery-2904%

  • Devil May Cry 4 for PS3 gets achievements, required installation [update]

The German version of GamePro (via NeoGAF) has published its review of Devil May Cry 4 and revealed some interesting features for the PlayStation 3 - namely, achievements. Similar to the Xbox Live counterpart, you'll be able to perform certain actions and earn recognition, which can then be seen by your friends. From what we gather, this is only for DMC4, however, and not a console-wide feature, so don't expect to start bragging about your PSN gamerscore anytime soon. The idea of PS3 achievements, rumored once to be called entitlements, were denied by Sony leading up to the console's launch. The review also confirmed Sixaxis functionality in the form of tilting to adjust the camera, and noted a 5GB required installation before you can play the game. The 1UP podcast this week also confirmed this, saying it took 25 minutes to complete the installation process, so don't expect to play the game as soon as you get home from the store.[Update: Upgraded emphasis on 5GB installation][Via PS3 Fanboy]

Foreign reviewers have received copies of Devil May Cry 4 on PS3, and have revealed a few new details about the game. First is an annoyance that we're sure many will complain about: the 5GB install to remove the game's load times is not optional. When the game releases, you'll be forced to endure minutes upon minutes of waiting as the game copies gigabytes of data to your PS3 hard drive. There's good news, though. The game will use the PSN for ranking modes. You'll also be able to collect achievements in the game (like in the Xbox 360 version) and you'll be able to see what achievements your friends have collected (a la Xbox Live). Finally, SIXAXIS controls have been added to the game. By tilting the controller, you'll be able to control the camera. It's not a significant extra, but it is a nice, subtle way of using the PS3's tilt functionality.

  • Behold, the opening cinematic of Devil May Cry 4

It's the opening cinematic to Devil May Cry 4! What more could you want? It looks great, has the style veterans of the franchise are used to, and some snappy lines. Nero isn't really as main of a character as we thought, though. We're fairly sure he's not going to be as big a deal as initially thought. Dante is all we care about and Dante is what we'll probably get a lot of. The game hits shelves in February of '08 for the 'States.[via Joystiq]

We've been impressed by the footage we've seen of Capcom's newest demon slaughtering simulator, Devil May Cry 4. It has all the elements we've come to expect from the DMC series: acrobatics, dismemberment, and extreme cases of early-onset leukotrichia. However, after paying attention to the jaw-droppingly beautiful opening cinematic for the game, we are left with one major question: What is Nero listening to on those headphones? Sure, high octane techno-rock is a pretty safe bet, but we guess it's possible that our crimson clad protagonist can't juggle baddies unless he listens to ABBA. Guess we'll find out when the game hits U.S. store shelves in February '08.

Devil May Cry fanboys get pumped, excited and drooly. Microsoft just revealed a "special" Devil May Cry 4 Xbox 360 bundle featuring an Xbox 360, a copy of DMC4 ... er, artwork on the box ... uh, yeah. We guess it isn't all that "special" per say, but it is DMC4 themified so that should be good enough for DMC fanboys. But even if it isn't, know that this bundle will only be available in Japan for around $300 starting January 31st. So, if you're reading this, we highly doubt you'll be able to get in on the DMC4 Xbox 360 bundle action. Then again, we fully expect some of you to be hardcore enough to get your mitts on one.[Via Engadget]

Like a Nero to the PlayStation 3's Dante, the Xbox may be the new console to the Devil May Cry scene but it's not looking to play second fiddle. Just like the PS3, the Xbox 360 is getting a Devil May Cry 4 bundle in Japan when it's released this January. ¥37,800 (or about $330) nets you an HDMI-equipped console along with a copy of the game which, we're sure, is the one thing Japanese gamers have been waiting on before taking the Xbox plunge. For all you Devil May Cry fanatics out there (wait -- are there Devil May Cry fanatics out there?) you're about to get a super-special, unicorn explosion from Microsoft. That's right, babies, it's the Devil May Cry special edition Xbox 360. Actually, it's more like a bundle of the boring, old, non-special (though HDMI equipped) Xbox 360, coupled with the brand-spanking-new Devil May Cry 4, where the Devil, crying, and the possibility of crying meet for a fourth -- but probably not final -- time. Right now it's looking like a Japanese-only deal, but you never know when something this gooey will drip over to these shores. Available January 31st for ¥37,800 (or about $330).

  • Devil May Cry 4 to include hard drive install, 5.1 LPCM audio, PSN support

You may not like Capcom for porting the former PS3-exclusive Devil May Cry 4 to the Xbox 360. But, can you take comfort in knowing that the PS3 version is still superior than its 360 counterpart? If you watched this episode of The 1UP Show, you would've heard the 1UP editors agree that the PS3 version looks and plays better than the 360 version. In addition, a new issue of Famitsu reveals some features that are sure to make PS3 owners quite happy. An optional hard drive install will supposedly remove all load times from the game. But, be warned -- it's quite a hefty install at nearly 5GB. Not only will load times be shortened on the PS3, but audiophiles will be glad to hear that the PS3 version also includes 5.1 LPCM audio. There's also support for the PSN, although how exactly it will work is still unclear. Regardless, it makes us glad to see the PS3 version of DMC4 get extra functionality.[Via NeoGAF]%Gallery-3194%

  • Capcom: 'ain't no difference' between Devil May Cry 4 versions

    12.21.2007

If you can't decide which version of Devil May Cry 4 - Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 - to purchase, the official Capcom blog has posted the above GameTrailers video to indicate that there is no difference between the versions. Glibs the poster, "Well, the corporate answer is 'You should buy both and give one to a friend. Perhaps a third to put under your pillow,'" later adding, "As I've been telling people for months, there ain't no difference between the two."One major deciding factor - load times - is not addressed in the footage. If one version takes 20 seconds to load a level and the other takes 2 minutes, then all else equal, we know which version we want to pick up.

Gaze upon the latest bundle for Japanese PlayStation 3 gamers. The Devil May Cry 4 40GB PS3 bundle comes in either black or white and includes a copy of Devil May Cry 4 (obviously) and a Blu-ray of bonus content. It will retail for 47,800 yen (approx. US $422), which is about 7,800 yen (US $69) more than the standalone 40GB model. What makes this bundle interesting is that DMC4 is not an exclusive title. We're going to assume Sony struck some exclusive deal for bundling the game, although we'd love to see Microsoft unveil a DMC4 Xbox 360 bundle. It might actually help their hardware sales to confuse Japanese consumers thinking they just picked up a PS3. Devil May Cry 4 is due out January 31, 2008, in Japan and February 5 in North America.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Sony certainly knows when to take advantage of a game that Japan loves. They did it with Minna no Golf 5 and Bladestorm and now Devil May Cry 4 looks set to receive the same treatment. The game will be bundled with both white and black 40GB PS3s and will also come with an extra Blu-Ray of bonus content.Due out on the 31st of January, alongside the game, the bundle will retail for 47,800 yen. That's around 212 GBP, 294 Euros or 422 USD by today's standards. Not a bad deal at all. Since the price drop sales in Japan have been increasing nicely and, hopefully, this bundle will only improve the situation.

Can we just say that this trailer finally shows us some fantastic stuff to get excited about for Devil May Cry 4? The franchise has never been much for story, and we're sure this one will still retain its cheese-tastic roots, but if this trailer doesn't get your blood pumping (especially for the long-time fans), you may just have gravy flowing through your veins instead. • Devil May Cry 4 started life on PC, not PS3

It's time to lay some truth down about Devil May Cry 4. Although it was originally planned as a PS3 exclusive, some may find it startling that development wasn't even started using any PS3-related equipment. Development began and grew using a PC engine.Usually, this spells trouble in the multi-platform arena for the PS3, but it might actually work out best for both consoles, says Kobayashi. "It makes it very easy to move it put it on the 360 and use the power of that machine, or to put it on the PS3 and use the power of that machine, each in different ways. It's really pretty easy to do it, developing it from this PC base." With this in mind, it makes other multi-platform complaints about the PS3 being too difficult to program for seem silly. For more about Nero's selection as the hero, knock yourself out at Newsweek. (Note that nothing's really new.) Look for the game in stores this coming February.

We've got five, count 'em, five videos of Dante and/or Nero in action from the upcoming Devil May Cry 4 today. You'll notice a lot of Swordmaster and Gunslinger moves, though not strung together in any flashy combos. Oh well, no biggie. We've got more videos after the jump, so don't be afraid to let yourself "blast off" and get a little "stylish".

With the announcement of a Devil May Cry 4 demo coming to the XBLM sometime early next year, Capcom decided to release a handful of new videos to show off the extreme awesomeness of DMC4. All the new video newness can be viewed after the break where we've carefully embedded them, and we think you'll agree DMC4 is one of the ultimate hack-n-slash games. Take the video embedded above for instance. First, you'll notice that Dante is one badass dude who is strong, witty and has a hint of cockiness. Second, you'll see that the gameplay is over the top slashing craziness that is sort of growing on us. Finally, after watching the video you'll see why we don't garden. We have a horrible fear of abusive, talking, female snake weeds. So much so, we sleep with a bottle of Roudup every night.

Click for high-resolution image. Wait a second -- that headline doesn't make any sense! Regardless, Capcom has announced that the PSN demo of Devil May Cry 4 will be available "early 2008." How early that will be is anyone's guess. According to the press release: "The demo introduces gamers to the gothic-inspired supernatural world of Devil May Cry 4, new protagonist Nero and the awesome power of his Devil Bringer. The demo consists of a sampling of sections from the full game, chosen to showcase Devil May Cry 4's varied locales and allows gamers to familiarize themselves with Nero's unique abilities."To get the hype machine rolling again for DMC, Capcom has also sent us a huge update of screenshots, which we've added to our gallery. They show off Dante's new weapon, "Lucifer," which fires mystical swords at enemies. The swords will also explode when Dante throws a red rose. Typical of an anime character, no? Also, you'll see Nero battling a new enemy dubbed the "One Winged Dark Knight."Devil May Cry 4 will also be on display at New York Anime Festival this weekend. %Gallery-3194%

Getting gifts and embarrassing ourselves while under the influence of copious amounts of alcohol are reasons enough to count down until the new year, but Capcom has given us another reason to continue to mark through days on the kitchen calender, announcing plans to release a free playable demo of Devil May Cry 4 over both the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store in early 2008.It's unclear exactly what will be included in the demo, with Capcom saying only that the download will serve to introduce the game's new hero, Nero, and feature levels "chosen to showcase Devil May Cry 4's varied locales and allow gamers to familiarize themselves with Nero's unique abilities." The demo will also include in-game instructions on how to use DMC4's Exceed sword charge system and various superhuman abilities, made possible by Nero's "Devil Bringer" powers, and will be capped off with a fight against a surly boss named Berial. We hope the boss has insurance, because players have been waiting a long time revisit Devil May Cry, and we imagine Berial is going to buried many times before the game's February 5, 2008 release.
