  • Resident Evil Extinction movie features Resident Evil 5 demo [UPDATE]

Sony Picture's upcoming Blu-ray release of Resident Evil Extinction is shaping up to be one of the coolest ever ... at least from a technical perspective. Taking full advantage of Blu-ray profile 1.1, the movie will include some cool Blu-ray only special features, such as a PIP video commentary called "Under the Umbrella" and "Blu-Wizard 2.0," an interface which will "memorize" how you've watched content and store it for future access. Creepy. But according to High-Def Digest, the biggest bonus of all (at least for PS3 owners) is the addition of two high-profile game demos: one for Resident Evil 5 and another for Devil May Cry 4. Currently, the disc is scheduled for release on January 2nd, 2008 and has a MSRP of $39.98. Hopefully, this is just the first of many future discs that feature bonus playable content on Blu-ray.[Update: Capcom contacted Siliconera. Apparently, the discs will feature non-playable trailers for the games, making any real reason to purchase the Blu-ray disc null. Sorry!]

  • See what's inside the DMC4 Collector's Edition

Today, Capcom released specifics surrounding the Devil May Cry 4: Collector's Edition and at first glance we deem the offerings to be "mmkay". Included in the Collector's Edition is your standard "Making of" features, metal packaging and digital artwork with other more exclusive offerings including some PC content (no themes or gamer pictures, wah?) and the first four episodes of the DMC animated series. So, no figures, dolls or hardbound goodness, but you'll still get quite the nice collection of additional content for the extra few bucks it costs. And just in case you like your details in bullet lists, we broke down and posted the Collector's Edition content after the break. We're kind and caring ... we know.

Capcom has announced today that a collector's edition of Devil May Cry 4 will be made available at $79.99 alongside the vanilla version of the game in America on February 5th. The box will contain a collection of interesting knick-knackery - namely, a DVD of the first 4 anime episodes, a Steelbook case and a bonus DVD. No sign of any figurines or wearables of any kind, but we're not particularly upset about that. The bonus DVD will contain a "making of" feature, music from the soundtrack, a "digital" art book as well as wallpapers, icons and screen savers for your PC. Of course, we're at a loss as to why Capcom didn't put in an actual art book. We'd much rather spend extra money on a physical paper-and-glue version than a PC-only DVD full of images. Still, collector's editions are always good fun. We're just not sure that this one is worth the extra money.

  • Devil May Cry 4 preview explosion!

    10.21.2007

For game journalists, Devil May Cry 4 hasn't gotten a lot of real "preview" time since the same footage and levels have been on display for nearly a year. In an effort to correct this at Capcom's Gamer's Day, the game's producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, showed off a ton of new material on both Nero and Dante -- tickling gamers' fancies and implying that Dante might have a much larger role than we originally thought. We'll make a list of the new stuff that appeared, just for you! The big brawl between Dante and Nero is showed off at last -- it serves sort of as a tutorial for getting used to Nero's controls. You use his Devil Bringer arm to smash Dante into the ground a few times, then you get to fight him like a full-fledged boss. Kobayashi admits there's still some tweaking to be done, as Dante continually kicked the crap out of Nero. The Devil Bringer arm was only thought to move you from place to place or grab enemies, but when powered up, as Kobayashi displayed, it has much more functionality. The description IGN used doesn't make much sense, but we imagine it as something overly dramatic and stylish. Kobayashi introduced the female fighter Gloria -- she's not playable, but her intro is "humorous" and has been labeled as Kobayashi's favorite female character yet. Probably due to her overtly sexual behavior. Nero was also shown fighting a new boss: some weird floating snake demon with a lady in its mouth. Sounds cool and all, but without seeing it, some of the magic is lost. Dante gets all his familiar fighting styles (Trickster, Swordmaster, Gun Slinger, etc) and he can switch between these styles and weapons on the fly. Kobayashi showed off Dante's Gilgamesh fists/boots, which veterans should be familiar with what to expect there. A new weapon, Lucifer, was shown off. These were like metallic wings that attached to Dante's back and seemed to serve a primarily defensive purpose. Pandora's Box! Dante's last new weapon shown was a briefcase that could churn out any number of insane weaponry -- explosive arrows, a chaingun, a giant missile platform, you name it. Of course, these will be difficult to use, so keep in mind tweaking these powerful weapons will probably entail making their use extremely limited. As for the Q&A session with Kobayashi, it's been determined that the game isn't two separate tales as originally thought (Nero and Dante going off and doing different things), but one long tale. You play through Nero's portion from start to finish, then swap over to Dante to complete the remainder of the game. Our hero still gets to take the glory, it seems. There are a large number of extras, which are still secret, and no word on downloadable content. We're excited. Let's just hope it remains about as difficult as the third entry into the series, so we'll have something else infuriating to play on the PS3.

  • Devil May Cry 4 has "emo" hero, release date set

Capcom's press site has alerted us to some updated information regarding Devil May Cry 4 and, seeing how we're kind spirits and all, thought we'd forward the information to you. A lot of it is rehashed info, so we'll cut through that recycled garbage (oxymoron?) and deliver you the news you want to know.Appearances by Trish, Lady, Dante, and pretty much the entire DMC cast ensemble are to be expected. Nero is described by Capcom as "cynical and prefers being a lone wolf, often labeled emo." That made us giggle a little bit. But probably the most important slice of information is a solid release date scheduled by Capcom -- a street date of February 2008 has been set. We'll have some more DMC4 news for you in a little bit, so don't worry, fans of the franchise, more news is coming.

Ever since Capcom made it official that Devil May Cry 4 was headed to the Xbox 360, everyone has been wondering exactly when that time will come. But now that release date guessing game is over (for the most part), because Capcom has made it official ... DMC4 will be landing on the Xbox 360 February 2008. No specific date has been pinned just yet, so we advise waiting to set your countdown clocks. And since February is still a ways out we think you should treat yourself to the latest DMC4 trailer which we embedded above. 2008 can't come soon enough.

Click for high-res image. One of the games that drew in the largest crowds at Tokyo Game Show was Devil May Cry 4, running on both PS3 and Xbox 360. There's a good reason for its popularity -- it simply reeks of cool. The gameplay doesn't stray far from its predecessors, which is a good thing in our eye. The cheesy characters and Spike TV-esque productions return for this next-gen sequel, which focuses on the continuing battle between Nero and Dante. Level design was clearly the biggest flaw of Devil May Cry 3, and it seems like the upcoming sequel does much to resolve it, offering less claustrophobic levels to battle in. Although some may criticize the game for lacking the challenge of games like Ninja Gaiden, it's clear that the game encourages style over survival. Considering the over-the-top nature of the franchise, that's part of its allure. %Gallery-3194%

For those of you that missed it the first time, the Devil May Cry 4 trailer that was released during the Leipzig Games Convention is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace. The trailer is more or less an extended version of the Tokyo Game Show trailer from last year. It introduces players to both Dante and Nero, the game's protagonists. There are also some shots of what appear to be villains as well, including the requisite scantily-clad, large-breasted dominatrix. If you've yet to experience it in HD, you might as well go download it now. Frankly, we're waiting for Capcom to give us something new.

Turn your volume down, now! Unless you want to hear the incredibly loud sounds of E3 sprinkled with some DMC4 music, we're just warning you. Of course, there are more than one new trailer for Devil May Cry 4 up at Gametrailers, but we're just giving you a small taste of what the latest build of Capcom's title looks like. It looks very smooth, but still lacking that signature difficulty. By all means, the guy playing the demo should be getting his bum handed to him, since he's not playing that expertly. On the other hand, the enemies are all very simple and basic too, so perhaps Capcom is saving the more extreme enemies for the more extreme crowd -- those who buy the game.

The five gamer pics feature Nero, Dante and Kyrie and will run you 100 Microsoft points while the theme will set you back 150. Keep your dial tuned into X3F as we'll be keeping an eye on all the Bringing it Home downloadable goodness throughout the next few days.

Capcom's latest financial report, which also revealed the less-than-spectacular Lost Planet and Dead Rising sales in Japan, has a curious absence from their lineup for the upcoming financial year: Resident Evil 5. Unless the publisher is planning on making a surprise announcement, it is unlikely we'll see the sequel until next fiscal year beginning April 2008. We have contacted Capcom for an official statement. The report listed Devil May Cry 4 and both Resident Evil Wii titles (RE4 and Umbrella Chronicles) as upcoming major release, with DMC4 expected to sell 1.8 million units worldwide.[Via EuroGamer, PS3 Fanboy]

  • Devil May Cry producer may cry if system wars continue

    06.02.2007

Famitsu Xbox 360, an obviously 360-centric publication of the Japanese Famitsu magazine, recently got a short interview with Devil May Cry 4 producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi. They finally got the answer everyone has been arguing over: why did DMC4 go multiplatform? We're satisfied with the answer, so we'll outline that along with other queries asked below. About the move toward multiple platforms, Kobayashi said "We're using an engine called Framework for development, and it's extremely easy to have a multiplatform strategy including the PC. You can say that Devil May Cry 4 is the first such offering. With the increase in platforms, we have the chance of more people being able to play the game, so we're also happy as developers." The strong name of the game overseas help, too, he said. The game is definitely built originally on the PS3 and ported to other systems (which will yield better ports to other systems and easier for the developers). Kobayashi said that "we've just started with the Xbox 360 version following the announcement, so there's still a ways to go." If the PS3 version is nearly complete, can't we just get it now? We wanna play. The content, as we've said before, will be the same across platforms. Minor graphical differences may exist, plus the PS3 can install the game onto the hard drive, but the game will play the same regardless. Kobayashi laments, "We wanted to avoid arguments about which one is better." The game will indeed run at 60fps. Kobayashi actually claimed keeping to that goal has proven to be one of the biggest challenges in developing for next-gen consoles so far. Finally, we've been told to expect an advanced build of the game at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in September. It wasn't made clear if it will be any specific console build, but we'd anticipate a booth for both the PS3 and 360 versions of the game. Not for comparison purposes, but just to show how they're progressing. So they say.

  • First DMC4 playable Dante gameplay footage

Capcom has released the first gameplay footage of Dante from Devil May Cry 4. If you don't know, the protagonist featured so far is in fact Nero, though he bears a striking resemblance to Dante. Among other things, Dante has duel-wielded pistols, which are so popular with the kids these days. The clip is very short, but it does showcase some pretty nifty maneuvers for Dante. We like the upside down, spiraling double guns in particular. Check out the video and a new gallery after the break.

A brand new trailer made available by Capcom gives the new hero, Nero, some rest while franchise poster boy Dante flexes his muscles and busts out some cool moves in the upcoming Devil May Cry 4. While I've recently been lost in the insanely difficult DS title Etrian Odyssey, my mind has often wondered as to whether this title will retain the difficulty set by the third entry. If you don't like tough games, you shouldn't climb into the ring. Hopefully this game will be tough, but not so hard as to turn people off of getting into the fight. If for some reason you can't see the video above, please check it out at its hosted site. Also of note is that Peter Dille, Senior Marketing VP for Sony, announced that DMC4 was built for the PlayStation 3 hardware then ported down to other systems. Someone else said that if games were started on the PS3 and ported elsewhere, quality would not drop and the PS3 version would look spectacular. Good news for us, then![Thanks a lot, Cagalli!]

Dubbed Gamer's Day Galleries, you'll know exactly what you're getting into. This first gallery has a few gorgeous high-res shots from Devil May Cry 4 -- nothing surprisingly new, but they're great to look at. Smooth, gigantic bosses, fast-paced action ... this game's got it all, if you like that sort of thing. Everyone that has read this site for more than a day know my feelings about the DMC franchise, so of course I think these screens look great. Look for the game by the end of the year, probably October.%Gallery-3194%
