Definitive and remastered editions are all the rage nowadays, and in some cases a bump in technology can vastly change how a game is played. That may very well be the case for the DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive set, which brings the lightning-fast action gameplay to 60fps and 1080p. Oh so many frames means those relentless battles can blaze by while ratcheting up tension. Watch above as the Dante for a new era steps out of his 30fps cage on console and plows through enemies at a much quicker clip. The DmC: Devil May Cry Definition Edition launches for PS4 and Xbox One on March 10.

Maybe Dante skipped breakfast, or maybe demonic construction on his demonic commute wasn't so bad this morning. Whatever the reason, Capcom's remastered action game DmC Definitive Edition is arriving a week earlier than expected. As we mentioned last month, DmC: Devil May Cry, a reboot of Capcom's classic Devil May Cry action series, will be granted improved graphics and gameplay in a new version dubbed DmC Definitive Edition on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. At the time we were told the remake would launch on March 17, but this morning Capcom changed all that by moving the release date ahead to March 10. [Image: Capcom]

  • Joystiq Discussion: When is it time to reboot?

Deeply excited about replaying Devil May Cry 4 and DmC: Devil May Cry on PlayStation 4, I embarked on a quest to finally fill a gaping hole in my gaming experience this week. Playing Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening for the first time elicited some distinct thoughts. First, this game lives up to its reputation. Not quite as amazing as descendants like Bayonetta 2, but its combo-driven action and melodramatic weirdness hold up marvelously. Second: Why did Devil May Cry need a reboot at all? Make no mistake, I thought DmC was one of the best games made in 2013, but it's not like there was some complex story preventing people from getting into the series. Dante, no matter what the most vocal dissenters may say, is no more ridiculously designed in DmC than in Devil May Cry 3. He's still an absurd fop-goth prone to not wearing shirts and stabbing people. As far as I can tell, all the reboot did was alienate fans by telling them something they loved needed to change but little actually did. Then again, some reboots just work. One of my favorite games of 2014 was Wolfenstein: The New Order, a game that found unexpectedly rich soil in a series barely on life support, sustained only on nostalgia. There's the difference, though. Wolfenstein needed to change in order to be relevant in today's gaming landscape, a very different scenario than with DmC. When do you reboot? When a series isn't relevant? When a story becomes too dense? Never? Take the poll, discuss in the comments. To reboot or not to reboot?[Images: Capcom]

  • DmC: Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 4 head to PS4, Xbox One

The Definitive Edition of DmC: Devil May Cry is due out on Xbox One and PS4 on March 17, 2015, for $40. Devil May Cry 4 is scheduled to hit the same platforms in summer 2015. DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition includes the main game, all DLC (including the Vergil's Downfall campaign), plus new modes and costumes. The Definitive Edition runs at 1080p and 60fps on both consoles, Capcom says. "New to DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition, players will be able to play as Dante's twin brother himself in Vergil's Bloody Palace Mode," Capcom writes in a press release. "For an extra depth of challenge, players will be able to try out the added Gods Must Die difficulty level and Must Style Mode as well as Hardcore Mode, which has been designed to play more like the classic Devil May Cry series." Capcom will implement balancing and fan feedback in the Definitive Edition, including a Turbo Mode that speeds up gameplay during some stages for faster combat. The new costumes in the Definitive Edition are inspired by classic series designs – here's hoping for a mid-length bleach-blond wig for Dante. Or maybe a pizza shirt. More details about Devil May Cry 4's transition to next-gen are due "in the coming months," Capcom says. [Image: Capcom]

  • Resident Evil: Revelations 2 box art spotted on Xbox.com

Leaked box art straight from Microsoft's official Xbox.com site points towards a sequel to Resident Evil: Revelations, the horror shooter that transitioned from 3DS to big screens last year. As spotted by French site Gamer in a Box, the Xbox.com site hosts the Xbox 360 box art image for Biohazard Revelations 2, Biohazard of course being the Japanese name for Resident Evil. The above screenshot is also hosted in the same folder as the box art image. This isn't the first time we've seen Resident Evil Revelations 2 appear in the online shadows. In the summer, Russian retailer VideoIGR posted then swiftly removed a listing for the game, with pre-orders available on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PS3. As Hardcore Gamer reports, the retailer also listed (then removed) DmC: Devil May Cry Ultimate for PS4 and Xbox One, suggesting a possible remaster of the 2013 PS3 and Xbox 360 hack-and-slash. [Update: When approached about the Xbox.com images, a company spokesperson told Joystiq, "Capcom has made no announcements."] Check out the box art below the break.

This week's PlayStation Store additions are marked by Klei Entertainment's Don't Starve, which is now available on PS4. The roguelike survival game from the makers of Mark of the Ninja is $14.99, but also happens to be one of two games that are free for PlayStation Plus members starting this week. The other PS Plus freebie is DmC: Devil May Cry for PS3. Two games joined DmC on the PS3's digital storefront this week: Tiny Brains ($19.99) and Twisted Lands: Shadow Town ($11.99). Tiny Brains already launched on PS4, and the game is Cross-Buy-compatible for those with multiple Sony consoles in their household. StreetKix: Freestyle is also available on PSP for $11.99, discounted to $10.79 for PS Plus members. Among PSN's new add-ons is the Illustrious Pirates Pack for both PS3 and PS4 versions of Assassin's Creed 4, which is $9.99 and free for season pass holders. This week also saw a handful of permanent pricing changes on PSN, including Saints Row 4 ($39.99), Need for Speed: Most Wanted ($19.99), Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 ($39.99) and the Artorias of the Abyss DLC for Dark Souls ($9.99).

PS Plus subscribers can download two different free games this week when the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow. Don't Starve will be up for grabs on PS4, while PS3 users can try DmC: Devil May Cry. Don't Starve, from Klei Entertainment, is an open-world survival game where players must scrounge up supplies in order to survive as long as possible. DmC: Devil May Cry is a reboot of Capcom's popular action series from developer Ninja Theory. Both games are part of a packed January for PlayStation Plus. Other free downloads coming throughout the month include BioShock Infinite, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and a pair of PS Vita games: brain training game Smart As... and yet another entry in Team17's long-running Worms series, Worms: Battle Islands.

Team Joystiq is barging into 2014 with a celebration of last year's best games. Keep reading throughout the week to see our assembly of ingenious indies and triple-A triumphs. Skulls of the Shogun I have a pre-existing penchant for human skulls as decoration, so maybe that's why Skulls of the Shogun still resonates so deeply with me, despite it launching way back at the beginning of the year – before GDC, before E3, before Gamescom, before the reveals and launches of two next-gen consoles, before the holiday madness. Through all of that, Skulls of the Shogun remains a purely joyful, fun strategy game, complete with morbid humor, accessible mechanics and a lovely Saturday-morning cartoon style. Developer 17-Bit has a precise hand, and the team's attention to detail and flow makes Skulls of the Shogun sing across platforms: Xbox 360, Windows 8, Windows Phone, Steam and iOS. Skulls of the Shogun started the year off in the right way for me, so it's fitting to give it another nod at the end of 2013. Cheers, skull-chewers.

Team Joystiq is barging into 2014 with a celebration of last year's best games. Keep reading throughout the week to see our assembly of ingenious indies and triple-A triumphs. DmC: Devil May Cry No game surprised me more in 2013 than DmC: Devil May Cry. That surprise has absolutely nothing to do with some diehard devotion to Capcom's internally developed quartet of games in the original series either. What surprised me was the fact that Ninja Theory finally made something that lived up to the promise of Enslaved and Heavenly Sword. Both games aimed high in trying to deliver bitchin' action and deeply human tales, but both missed the mark. In DmC, they finally nailed it. Young Dante's fight against the demons is classic coming-of-age stuff. Rushing through Limbo feels like if J.D. Salinger wrote Dead Leaves. The combat, meanwhile, felt meatier than the limp button mashing of Enslaved, but more accessible than ball busters like Devil May Cry 3.

The January freebies for PlayStation Plus have just been revealed and it's quite the eclectic mix. Next week, PS4 owners will be able to partake in Klei's survival simulator Don't Starve, a game about scrounging for supplies and surviving for just one more night in a hostile environment. On PS3, will offer three separate free downloads in January: BioShock Infinite, DmC: Devil May Cry and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. BioShock Infinite, which takes place in the floating city of Columbia during 1912, is the latest first-person opus from Ken Levine and Irrational Games, while DmC: Devil May Cry is Ninja Theory's reboot of Capcom's devil hunter action series. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, the story of two young brothers on a quest to obtain medicine for their sick father, is from Starbreeze Studios. Finally, rounding out next month's downloads are two PS Vita offerings: Smart As... and Worms: Battle Islands. The former is a brain training game while the latter is another entry in Team17's long-running Worms franchise.

  • PS Plus Europe in December: Borderlands 2, DmC, Soul Sacrifice

Europe's seasonal batch of PlayStation Plus freebies comprises Borderlands 2, DmC: Devil May Cry, Soul Sacrifice, and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend, and in what's very much a case of Christmas coming a day early, they'll all arrive on December 24. PlayStation 4 owners have to wait a bit longer for their next Plus-wrapped pressie, because Klei's survival forager Don't Starve is due on January 8 - it'll probably hit North America the day before, but a release date hasn't been confirmed. It's a cracking line-up of games to dig into on Christmas Eve - forget all that quality time with family nonsense, amirite? However, Christmas isn't just a time of giving, but also a time of taking, in this case games removed from the Plus service: Grid 2, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, and Sonic and Allstars Racing Transformed head off on December 24, while PS4 platformer Contrast exits stage left on January 8. One final bit of PlayStation Europe news: The 12 Deals of Christmas continues to chuck discounts at continentals, with Battlefield 4 bombing to £25 (€35/AU$45) and The Walking Dead on Vita sliced to £7 (€10/AU$15) - with a further 10 percent off the latter for PS Plus members. If those deals take your fancy, you have until the end of tomorrow to grab them.

If you can spare the gigglebits on your Xbox 360, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and DMC: Devil May Cry are both available through Games on Demand on Xbox Live for $50 right now. Each will consume 7.34 GB and 6.57 GB, respectively. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the slice-em-up starring series cyborg Raiden that Platinum Games took over full-time from Kojima Productions in 2011. DMC: Devil May Cry is Ninja Theory's reboot issued earlier this year, which re-imagines Capcom's world replete with a new Dante.

When Capcom tasked Ninja Theory with rebooting Dante, the main character of its classic Japanese franchise Devil May Cry, it wanted to draw a clear distinction. This was a new Dante, a new Devil May Cry, and the series told through a westernized lens."Imagine Dante in a western movie," Capcom told Ninja Theory's art team. And so it did. There's Dante above, shooped into a scene from Brokeback Mountain – a very western movie, after all – and below Dante takes a breather with Brad Pitt in Fight Club.

Important things first: Unlike in the full DMC: Devil May Cry, Vergil wears a total of zero fedoras in his spin-off DLC, "Vergil's Downfall."Aside from that missed opportunity, Vergil's Downfall plays like a disowned, disgraced brother of Dante should. It resembles the main game and pulls directly from Dante's move list, copying his style and button mapping, but there's something inherently lackluster about the gameplay. Handling Vergil simply can't compare to the thrill of controlling Dante, and Vergil's pared-down weapons pale in comparison (as does his hair).I'm not saying the addition of a fedora would have helped Vergil's Downfall, but it definitely couldn't have hurt.%Gallery-179318%
