The E-620 from Olympus, the company's latest attempt at an entry-level DSLR, was well reviewed upon release, said to be the best mix of performance and value of any of the company's DSLRs released to date. However, that date is something of a problem: summer of 2009, and today's camera fans are hungry for updates at least every year. Is a successor coming? No, according to Product Manager Toshiyuki Terada, at least not in the near-term. He believes that the "entry level SLR class can be completely replaced by the PEN system in terms of performance." Yes, the compact, replaceable lens PEN system that's currently found models like the E-P1 and E-P2. Mind you, we definitely enjoyed our time with the lesser expensive E-PL1, and all the little shooters have been impressing, but none quite delivers the DSLR feel that meaty-pawed amateurs covet. Maybe all they need is a little dose of 50 - 200mm telephoto to get over their anxiety.

  • Olympus E-620 reviewed, does entry-level DSLR right

When Olympus introduced the E-620 it was presented as a sort of greatest hits camera, cramming many of the features found in the higher-end E-30 into a small body like that on the E-450, then selling it at a middle-of-the-road price. It sounds like a tall order, but according to Photography Blog it's a an almost complete success, offering "the most effective combination of features, ease-of-use and price of any Olympus DSLR camera to date." Not everything is perfect, with low-light performance suffering from visible noise degradation, blamed on the relatively petite sensor here, and the lack of video capture being something of a detriment. But, overall image quality is rated very high, in-body image stabilization effective, the flip-out LCD useful, and overall it's said to be a great value for its $699 MSRP -- that it's already selling for well over $100 less than that is an extra bonus.

Olympus just joined the pre-PMA pileup with the announcement of its E-620 DSLR for entry-level enthusiasts. The E-620 is a mash-up of Olympus' semi-pro E-30 and entry-level E-520 in a compact body approaching Oly's own E-420 (the world's smallest DSLR when launched). The resulting cam brings a 12.3 megapixel Live MOS image sensor with sensor-shift image stabilization, 7-point AF, TruePic III+ image processor, built-in wireless flash controller, and a fully articulating, 2.7-inch tilt-and-swivel live-view LCD. It also features Olympus' Art Filters which take in-camera image enhancements a bit beyond sepia. Expect the E-620 body to ship in May for about $700; $800 with the 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 lens.
