When you start life as a parent, you hope that buying every gadget on sale will make your life easier. But that's not always the case in the realm of baby tech, which often offers solutions to problems that don't exist. Because you don't have the time, or money, to try everything out on your own kids, let us guide you toward what you really need.

The road to parenthood is paved with endless anxiety and preparation. You have countless choices to make, and in the heat of the moment, they all seem like life-and-death decisions. That makes would-be parents an easy target for the baby-gear industry, which is expected to surpass $100 billion by 2025. If you thought buying a new phone or laptop was hard, just wait until you're confronted with countless "smart" baby gadgets that promise to prevent SIDs, track every bowel movement and make sure your child isn't screwed up for life. That's basically the life I've been living for the past year. But now that my daughter Sophia is nearly six months old, I have a better sense of the gear she actually wants to use and what's a waste of money.

We considered more than 20 smart-light-bulb systems and then spent eight weeks testing 10 contenders, confounding a family of four by constantly changing how their lights worked. After all that, we determined that the Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 is the best all-around smart LED bulb. Hue lets you change your lighting color easily and does everything other smart light bulbs do, and it's also part of a larger product and app ecosystem, allowing for more flexibility and creativity than any other smart bulb we tested. Plus, it's compatible with the widest variety of smart-home systems, including Apple's HomeKit, Samsung's SmartThings hub, Amazon's Alexa, and Google Home. It's not the cheapest bulb we tested, but its reliable performance and wide compatibility make it a solid choice for any smart-home enthusiast or newbie.

Eufy is Anker's smart home line of products, which includes robot vacuums, smart scales and even an Echo Dot competitor called Genie. Now Eufy has its own wireless security system called EverCam, and it's taken to Kickstarter to both fund and gauge interest in the item, which boasts a long battery life, easy installation and a 1080p camera.

After running more than 90 cleaning cycles with 14 of the most promising robot vacuums in 2017, we think the EcoVacs Deebot N79 is the best choice for most people who want a basic, affordable bot that can actually keep their floors tidy. The Deebot N79 is nimble enough to navigate most homes without getting stuck often—and that's what really makes most bot owners happy. Its battery life is the longest we've seen, it runs the quietest, and it has one of the better control schemes we've seen for the price—including Wi-Fi and a smartphone app. It works best on short carpet and bare floors, in areas smaller than 1,200 square feet, with only modest amounts of pet hair—limitations that stronger, smarter, pricier bots don't have. But the Deebot N79 is the best of the affordable robot vacuums, and if you run it at least a few times per week, it can keep your floors free of obvious debris with very little effort on your part. EcoVacs also makes a newer, more-expensive version of this robot called the Deebot N79S. It's basically the same as the old one, but it works with Alexa voice commands and has an option where you can boost the suction. That feature reduces the battery run time, though, and we found that as a result of that trade-off, it picks up a similar amount of debris per session. We'd spend our own money on the older Deebot N79, in the interest of saving a few dollars. But the newer Deebot N79S does work well, if you think the voice-command functionality is worth paying extra.

Smart bathroom scales do the weight-tracking work for you, no typing or pen and paper required. After more than six months of researching and stepping on and off a dozen scales (a total of 35 hours and more than 550 weigh-ins), we've found that the Eufy BodySense Smart Scale is the best smart scale available today, with an app that's simple to use and a reasonable price.

As part of its growing smart home tech line of products called Eufy, Anker is adding its version of the Echo Dot. It's a little bit bigger than the Dot with some slightly different specs here and there, but overall very comparable to Amazon's version. And the Eufy Genie comes a bit cheaper at just $35 compared to the Dot's $50 price tag.
