  • The EVE Challenge

Hardcore Casual has thrown down the gauntlet, and challenged all comers to prove something interesting: that EVE Online hasn't yet solved our MMO problems. That's a strange thing to prove, but we here at Massively love nothing more than a challenge, so here goes.HC's point is that in EVE, you can pretty much do anything the way you want to, anywhere at any time. EVE is limitless in terms of both progression and size-- skills can be leveled for months and years, and even if all the skills are maxed out (they won't be, because CCP keeps adding new ones), there's always more ISK to be made. And because the game is so big and mostly empty space, everyone can play on one world, and there's no need for the sharding that other games must do to keep their servers up.However, as much as I love EVE, it is not a perfect MMO.

The official community site of EverQuest II has been updated in preparation for the Rise of Kunark expansion. The update adds new guild roster features, new art for forum signatures, lots of little fixes and additions, and of course support for all the new Rise of Kunark stuff like post-70 player characters and the Iksar race. You can read all the details on the site's news page. The update responds to a lot of user requests. It was due earlier but was pushed back so the expansion-related updates could be included in the same package. The EQII players website is an exemplary MMO community hub, and all this just makes it better. Check out the site and hang out on the forums during the agonizing wait until Rise of Kunark goes live today!

Today, three major MMOs are dark: World of WarCraft, EverQuest, and EverQuest 2 for content patches or expansions -- WoW gets patch 2.3; EQ and EQ2 each have shiny new expansions. It's not often the big three are offline at the same time for new content, so this must either be a sign of the apocalypse or product managers imitating carny barkers by jumping up and down yelling, "Play my game, not that other game!" It is our sworn duty here at Massively to remind you there is this thing called the "outdoors" and we hear it's quite lovely this time of year. So, go check it out and get back to us on what it's like, will ya?Of today's releases, I'm looking forward to the EQ2 expansion, Rise of Kunark the most. While the level 70-80 content is too high for me, I'm a total sucker for new starting areas. I've been wanting to roll a necro, so tomorrow I'll check out Timorus Deep with my still-got-the-new-toon-smell Sarnak. The WoW patch is a complete whiff for me since I failed in both getting my alt to level 20 and my main to level 70 -- the fall game review cycle can make for a hellacious schedule for freelancers. So no improved XP or Zul'Aman for me. It's been years since I've played EQ, and, you guessed it, my main is under the level cap so there's nothing there for me, either -- sense a pattern on non-level-capped chars? How about you? How are you spending patch day? What's the over/under on the length of the downtime? Which game are you logging into first?

This just in: we've actually been contacted by the fine folks at Sony Online Entertainment, who have given us a veritable plethora of copies of both of their new expansions launching today! This means that we've changed the original prizes from just the one copy we had, to 3 copies -- as well as the prizes for the rest of the day! That said, for EQ2 we couldn't be more excited about this, as some of us were lucky enough to get into the beta for Rise of Kunark. You can trust us when we say that the Sarnak are a wickedly fun addition to the Everquest II stable. The attention to even the little details of the starting area in Timorous Deep on up will impress both old and new players alike. But enough gushing about Everquest II and Rise of Kunark -- for now, anyway. Let's get on with giving you a chance to win your own copy! This hour we're offering three copies of the EverQuest II expansion, which actually includes the core game and all expansions up to this point! So those new to EQ2 and those who've been around alike will be able to use this prize. Full of win, no? All you need to do is leave a comment below and you could be one of the lucky people who walks away with your very own copy -- and the ability to create your very own snarling Sarnak! You must be 18+, a resident of the U.S. and all the rest of the hoopla from the official rules. Good luck!

  • Is single-player content hurting MMORPGs?

    by

    11.12.2007

The term "solo friendly" is commonly cited as a virtue of newer MMO titles. Many MMO related forums have threads such as this one over at MMORPG.com which discuss the "soloability" of player classes within an MMORPG. In fact many of the elements of games such as Everquest which players have complained about over the years such as "forced grouping," "camping spawns," or "racing for non-instanced content" have all but been removed from the most recent MMORPG releases. When was the last time you saw two guilds racing to kill the same mob in World of Warcraft? How many of you have spent more than 30 minutes on a corpse recovery in City of Heroes? (That is a trick question, since there is no need to recover your corpse in that game.)

Many, many moons ago, I remember getting a call from one of my best friends; he was crowing about this new game called EverQuest that he said I absolutely had to go get. After all, as he pointed out, not only was it a game (a common passion we share to this day) but it would give us a chance to "hang out" together despite the enormous physical distance between us. Thus began my passion for MMOs -- and EQ will always have a special spot in my heart as my first MMO love. For those of you who also keep your torches burning bright for EverQuest, this giveaway is for you! For this giveaway, we're offering a copy 3 copies of the newest EverQuest newest expansion, Secrets of Faydwer. But don't think that this is only for the people who only own EverQuest already. This expansion actually includes all the prior games in a giant roll up of gaming goodness for both EQ veterans and total EQ newcomers alike. All you need to do to be eligible for this drawing is to leave a comment before 2:00 PM tomorrow (11/13) telling us what your first ever MMO was and how you got into it? Did your friend call you and tell you to go get it right now or they were going to buy it for you -- or was that just me? Of course, you must be 18+ years of age, a U.S. resident, and all the other official rules stuff. Let us know!Update: We've just heard back from SOE who has gifted us with some boxed copies of Secrets of Faydwer. So this giveaway has just gotten three times as cool because we're giving away 3 copies of Secrets of Faydwer instead of 1! Stay tuned throughout the rest of the evening for more EverQuest giveaway goodness!

Tons of updates hitting this week: WoW is headed to 2.3, Everquest is getting patched, and it seems like almost everyone is getting code out to their games (maybe in advance of the holidays). So what's your routine when patches come around? Me, I'll probably be avoiding Azeroth on Tuesday, as a big patch usually means things are a little hectic when it first comes down (not to mention that Assassin's Creed is coming to the non-MMO world, and that's going to be grabbing lots of my attention). But in the meantime, I'll have addons to update, a probably a good chunk of the patch to download yet. What's your plan for patch day this week? Are you going to charge in ahead of the crowds and be the first to see the new content (and all that lag), or sit back, relax, and let things work themselves out before you login?

The Legends of Norrath trading card game was only released a few months ago, but already Sony Online Entertainment is planning for the future. This past week they announced the first expansion to the title, Forsworn. Combined with Oathbound, the current card set, Forsworn will open up a series of new options for the player. Set highlights include: 2 on 2 multiplayer - small scale team combat to change up the game types. New Avatar Races - The high elves and the Iksar will join the game, opening up new Light and Shadow options. Raids - Groups of players, each with their own deck, can team up to take on AI opponents of great power. Players who complete enough of the single-player content can actually run these raid decks against their fellow players. New Loot Cards - Up to twenty new cards representing in-game items will be released with this set. New single-player scenarios, pitting your avatar against the forces that oppose the Seventh Hammer and the Tribunal. The single-player elements will introduce new game concepts, like the Overwhelm, Sentinel, and Reinforce key words. There's no word yet on when the set will be released, and more features are promised in the future.

The NDA for the closed beta of EverQuest II: Rise of Kunark has finally been lifted. Expect to see a lot of new information about the new expansion in the coming days. The first wave has already begun. For example, MMO blogger Ogrebear unleashed several outstanding screenshots of the Fens of Nathsar and The Kylong Plains. These zones are looking fantastic. The Kylong Plains were covered in our own tour of the Rise of Kunark beta if you want some more information. The expansion is expected to go live next week, so sit tight.

"I think I'll cancel for awhile, why the heck not?" We've all shared that brooding thought at one time or another when it comes to our favorite MMOGs. Take your pick from the reason tree: the game cleaves your brain matter with boredom; various lovers to herd, or the one significant other to placate; the expansion or patch won't be out until the end-of-days; real-life aggro's and it slays your played time; thousands of others. Eventually, you're back trundling about in that same MMOG again. It can be a brutal, and yet, hilarious cycle. I think my break and return record is probably around a dozen times with EverQuest. I was finally able to drop it for good when a shiny alpha invite popped up in the mail one day inviting me to a new magical enchanted land called WoW. Admittedly, not to make this post a debate between which MMOG is the best, I suffered a huge case of burnout -- raiding tastes like burning after you eat it for a few years no matter what MMOG you play. How many times have you taken a break from a MMOG only to return again later? What were your reasons? Did you actually quit for good only to return later for a specific reason? "They fixed my class! Count me back." 10 months later a flurry of nerfs strike. "I'm out!" Good times.

    Dan O'Halloran

Watch the official SoE video exploring the new expansion lands, then read below for a write up of my beta tour!I played EverCrack, uh, EverQuest for 7 years. The game was hard. Death meant loss of experience that would erase an entire week's level gain. It also meant all your equipment stayed on your body requiring venturing back down to the mob infested pit to retrieve it, but this time you're naked and it's 3am. On a school night. And many core game mechanics that we know and love were not developed yet, such as having no way to get gold and items to alts other than to hand them to a random stranger and hope they would be there when you logged on your alt.The game evolved, making time spent in Norrath not quite so harsh. But it when World of Warcraft launched, I went running to it like the Promised Land: no corpse runs, no experience loss on death, a mail system to move items and cash to alts. It was all good with a side of good. It soon became hard to justify logging on to EverQuest where a 5 hour experience grind could be lost in a few deaths. So it was with some trepidation that I poked my head back into the game to get a tour of their 14th expansion, Secrets of Faydwer. And I what I saw made me want to come back to the game that I remembered so bitterly and so fondly at the same time.

  • EverQuest 2 to add epic quests; bad memories of EQ1 epics come back

    Mark Crump

    11.05.2007

As Dan O'Halloran mentions in his write-up of the new EverQuest 2 expansion, Rise of Kunark. epic quests are coming to EQ2. If you played EverQuest, this could cause you to roll your eyes and exclaim, "Oh, no. Not this crap again!"This is likely to spark some debate, but I think epics rank high on the list of "Worst ideas in EverQuest." People felt a sense of entitlement to the damn things. It wasn't uncommon for people to cause guild strife getting the fool thing, only to quit their "fun" guild and join the uber guild that smartly required people to already have the items so they didn't go through all that malarky. Not that I'm bitter about it. mind you.It was the Cleric "click stick" epic that broke many guilds and player's spirits. EverQuest had a hefty experience point loss on death. The Cleric epic was a mana-less, instant-cast stick that gave you 100% of the xp back. [Edit: I stand corrected, it is indeed 96%. That's what I get for trusting my memory. What's 4% amongst friends?] If memory serves me right, it was also the only class epic that ended up being a have-to-get.

  • Local TV visits SOE San Diego

Scott Hartsman posted a link to local San Diego TV station KUSI, who invaded the SOE studios there for a "special report" about the people who make these things called Massively Multiplayer Online games. As mainstream news reports about our favorite pasttime go, it's actually not too bad, though there are a few chuckle-worthy moments-- apparently saying Dad "wasn't too happy" turns into his "outright horror" on local news, and is it just me or did anyone else have the thought that Sasha Foo is probably the most attractive person to ever enter the SOE game testing room? I kid, I kid!But otherwise, it's a pretty solid report on what it's like making MMOs at SOE. If you're an artist, you can probably drool over that paintbox they're using, and there are also shots of Everquest 2 in wireframe, the making of casting animations, a look at some concept art for Rise of Kunark and a few other games and even some news about a new MMO aimed at a younger audience due out next year called Free Realms. Even if you watch it with the sound turned off, it's a cool look inside SOE studios and what it's like to work there.

  • New life for old, dead games?

    by

The folks over at West Karana sure have an interesting concept. It seems the author of this afternoon's post was in the market for an Xbox 360 and was a little shell-shocked when the salesperson tried to sell them a copy of Pacman. This got the creative juices flowing and our friend reasoned that if games like Pacman, Asteroids and Tetris can have such ridiculously long shelf lives, there's no reason this concept couldn't be applied to MMORPGs.I'm with him one hundred percent. I cut my teeth on the original Everquest, which just happens to be the game she is talking about. The question is posed in the article: With all the graphic assets and geography assets already "in the can", how much work would it take to make single-player versions of some of these cherished old games? I would love to go back to the Maiden's Fancy in Neriak Commons and sit in the peeler bar where I spent so much money (on booze of course) and where I often sat sharing a drink with friends. And that's only one of many places that come to mind.Would you pay for single-player versions of old MMORPGs? Which ones would you like to see make the transition? Could the henchmen concept from Guild Wars possibly be married to this idea with interesting results? What do you think?

Say what you will about achievement points on the Xbox 360. They may cheapen the experience, or reduce elements of skill down to raw numbers, but anyone who has ever played a 360 knows how addictive the little "Achievement unlocked!" message is. So what happens when you toss that into an MMO? Titles. It seems that a recent trend in MMOs is "titles". When they first debuted in the mainstream with City of Heroes, they didn't do much. All they did was add bragging rights for the person who has them, and a displayable title above the person's head. They were worthless (Well, mostly worthless). And most of the titles in CoX are still worthless. "Oh, I killed 200 Circle of Thorn members. I've got that sweet new title." Some MMOs are actually starting to change things up now, though, including the pioneers of the "Titles" system. Getting the exploration titles in City of Heroes/Villains will enable your Supergroup to teleport to that map from your Supergroup base. Getting certain titles in Guild Wars will allow you to increase your holding cap on faction. Getting all titles in an area in Tabula Rasa gets you a huge experience bonus (noticing a trend here? NCsoft developers seem to love the use of titles).

    11.03.2007

EQVault has a nice write up on how the EverQuest team creates creatures, with a focus on the next expansion, Secrets of Faydwer. They've got exclusive screenshots showing the concept and final versions for three creatures. There are also links to SOE videos of the models in action. The article gives an inside look into the creation process. Often, we only focus on the end result: the model in the game. I enjoyed reading the little bit of "inside the sausage factory." The in-game version wasn't too far off from the concept art. Given how old the core EQ engine is it's impressive how good they can make stuff look. In fact, looking through the galleries on the official site reveals some nice-looking work. Since my main is only level 56 I will not be playing it the new expansion. However, due to a serious sentimental attachment to the game, I'm making plans to re-install and revisit my old haunts. How about you? Do you like reading about how games are made? Will you be checking out the new expansion?
