  • Video: Samsung Instinct UI walkthrough

One ultra-glossy phone plus a dozen or so overly ornate chandeliers is a recipe for video disaster, and indeed, we managed to capture the beautiful outline of said chandeliers in far more detail than we ever intended here. It's the price we pay for demanding mirror-finish touchscreens, we guess, but we think we still managed to convey a fair bit about the Instinct's distinctive user interface here. First of all, it wasn't nearly as snappy as we'd have liked it to be, but the phone's not hitting retail for a couple months yet so we'll cut 'em some slack while they're ironing out the final kinks in the firmware. The web navigation gestures were a little choppy, too, though we appreciated the dedicated "birdseye" key that zooms out so the entire page can be seen at once; a red box indicated where you'll be when you zoom back in. Bottom line? We get the impression that Samsung's delivering form over function here, but hey, for a good number of us, that's a sacrifice we're willing to make.

Enjoy this special moment that can only occur between one happy iPhone user and their consenting device. You'll get to witness the miracle of icon rearranging, the joy of Google Maps location finding, and the unending pleasure of homescreen Safari bookmarks. We didn't grab the multiple SMS recipient function on film, but we assure you it's exactly like it should have been to begin with.

Enjoy the sounds and sights of a crowd clearly way too amped on coffee and lack of sleep clapping as a drive is yanked out of the ReadyNAS duo.

As you've surely saw in our liveblog of the Toshiba press conference, the firm went wild with new LCD releases for 2008. The overriding theme was thinness and early release dates, with essentially every set listed shipping by April. We'll get down to the dirt: two new 720p sets were introduced -- the AV500 and REGZA CV510 -- the first of which will be available in sizes ranging from 19- to 42-inches and feature DynaLight, HDMI and a PC input, while the latter will only be available in 32- / 37-inch sizes and sport PixelPure4G 14-bit internal processing, a 1.5-inc ThinLine Bezel design and a trio of HDMI 1.3 ports. If the RoboQuad and RoboBoa didn't scare you enough, now we've got a video of the scariest Robo-animal of them all... the RoboPanda. The fun lil' cutesy robot sounded like it had the potential to go iRobot / Matrix / [insert favorite robots take over world scenario here] when the bot asked, "Have you ever been attacked by a panda?" It really did say that, but if you could avoid the obvious welcoming of our robot panda overlords, we'd appreciate it. [MP4] Download the video

We managed to get some photos of Sling's hard drive-toting, PC video streaming SlingCatcher today. Seeing as our photos are just external hardware shots, this is technically more of a "SlingCatcher on-our-hands" rather than a "hands-on," but hopefully they'll give you a better idea of the scale of the device. In case you didn't catch our earlier post, the SlingCatcher will probably be released sometime around mid-2007, and is expected to include WiFi and a hard drive (making this the first Sling device with integrated hard drive based storage.) Check out a couple of other angles of the SlingCatcher after the break.

We're sorry to have to put you through this, but we've got nearly twenty full minutes of footage of the Wii in the can. Hit it for initial setup, configuration, and a complete interface and menu walkthrough, including the creation of a Mii. (Sorry, online stuff is disabled for the time being, we'll hit you back on that asap.) We know it's a tad excessive, but we're hoping to keep the Nintendo fanboys in the house pleased while we silently and lovingly admire our congregation of consoles.Download videoMP4 (h.264) - VGA, QVGAAVI (DivX) - VGA, QVGA

  • How-To: Build yourself a front projection home theater

    05.23.2006

In today's How-To we get to play with other people's toys. We upgraded a home theater to a high definition front projection system. We lay it out, set it up, drill holes, nearly die in a Texas attic, and bring home the popcorn. Our project home theater already has the essentials for taking advantage of a high definition display: a progressive scan DVD player with component video output and a hi-def DISH Network satellite receiver provide a HD video source for the projector.Screen SelectionIt may seem counter intuitive, but it's helpful to consider (but not purchase) the screen before choosing a projector. Knowing the size of screen you want in your room will determine where the projector needs to be mounted, and how bright it needs to be. If you're not sure, marking out the dimensions of the screen with some blue masking tape and checking out the view from your seating area can be helpful.
