Free Realms has released its third "Ask a Dev" video -- lead character artist Matt Case and game designer Margaret Krohn teamed up to bring information on the new content coming this month. The first order of business was fishing. This new job will have its own minigames, as well as the chance to explore new types of fish as you advance. Keep an eye out as you play, because fish aren't the only thing you have a chance at catching! December brings new pets as well. Dragons, dinosaurs, unicorns and more will be available as companions, each with a variety of colors and their own special personalities and animations. Need a place for you and your pet to go after a long day of fishing? Margaret answers questions about housing -- how you can furnish it, what is available (dance floors and rocket ships, anyone?), and how much stuff you can fit in your new digs. Finally, Matt had some information about the upcoming holiday events. There will be a nice variety of costumes available as well as a fun quest series, snowball fights and...special phone booths in Snowhill? Color us intrigued. Check out the video after the jump, and we'll see you in Free Realms!

While many areas up north are getting their first dusting of snow for this season here in the US, many lands in Middle-earth are still lovely, sunny, and comfortable. So if you've had enough of winter, you can always head into Lord of the Rings Online like IGN Albar, who sent this in: Here's my friend Jhorge doing some fishing in a beautiful sunset. Later he started a campfire and I repaired all our stuff to keep running our quests. I have been playing Lord of the Rings Online for about 2 months and is definitely the most incredible-lore-graphics of all MMO (and I've played a lot).MMOs big or small - we want screenshots of them all! Just email them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name, the name of the game, and a quick description. We'll post them out here and give you the love for sending them in.%Gallery-9798%

  • Patch 3.3: Fishing pool guarantees and what it means for the market

    by
    Mike Schramm

    12.01.2009

Wryxian has written a book on fishing over on the forums -- he originally responded to the thread with a quick link that affirmed in patch 3.3, you will never ever catch trash from fishing pools, regardless of your fishing level. If you put the bobber in a pool, you'll get what you're supposed to, no matter what (presumably to allow even low level players to do the fishing quests). But players have problems with that. First, there's the old issue of things always getting easier as the game changes -- people are complaining that they had to level with missed catches and trash, and those who level fishing after 3.3 won't. For that, I don't have a better answer than Wryxian does: that's just the way it works. The game is ever-changing, and most changes make things easier. That shouldn't devalue what you did before. The other issue is that this may destroy the fishing economy -- if even low level characters always get the fish they want 100% of the time, that means more fish in the market, which means any money high-level fishermen would have made off of rare fish will probably go bye-bye. But Wryxian says that's OK -- people will still use fish for themselves, and he believes that the pain of losing that AH sale will be solved by the bonus of always getting the fish you want. We'll have to see -- it's true that between the updates to cooking lately (and the future fishy updates we're expecting), Blizzard is making sure the secondary professions are much less exclusive, which means there has to be the balance of also making them less lucrative. Patch 3.3 is the last major patch of Wrath of the Lich King. With the new Icecrown Citadel 5-man dungeons and 10/25-man raid arriving soon, patch 3.3 will deal the final blow to Arthas. • Still more details on Final Fantasy XI's coming update

At the rate we're getting swamped with information about the upcoming Final Fantasy XI version update, we'll soon be finding out that the update is also adding two new jobs and a level cap increase. Well, maybe not, but Square-Enix has released yet more news about the upcoming November version update. Already we've heard about new gear enhancements, new crafting, job updates, and a reward for content-minded players. The most recent information involves some of the more miscellaneous activities of Vana'diel's inhabitants, including chocobo racing and fishing. Chocobo races are being changed over to a new schedule system that keeps races running on a consistent real-world schedule to make coordination easier for players. The system is also adding new purchasable items that will have a variety of bonuses for the devoted race enthusiast. Of course, the new items won't be cheap -- nothing in Final Fantasy XI is -- but first through third-place winners in each race will be receiving a much larger amount of chocobucks for their placing, which should make affording things much more fesable. On top of that, there's a promise of more fish to turn in for the popular "In the Belly" quest, with the hint of new equipment. Keep your eyes peeled, as we might well have not seen the last of the additions to this now-massive update.

News flash! Tired of getting ganked in Stranglethorn Vale for the weekly fishing contest? Well worry no more as our favourite walking walruses, the Kalu'ak, are hosting their own fishing tournament in Northrend every Wednesday when patch 3.3 drops! Some details have been released in the recent 10676 build. Great! What are the details? Elder Clearwater is going to hang out in Dalaran for exactly one hour for a Blacktip Shark that you have to catch and return to him. The event starts at 8:00 PM on Wednesday. If you're looking for a tip though, apparently the elusive Blacktip Shark seems to favour Pygmy Suckerfish. Keep a few handy in your bags when you're going fishing. Don't worry though as even if you don't end up being the champion angler, you'll still receive a reward just for turning the shark in. On an achievement related note, the Master Angler of Stranglethorn achievement has been changed to Master Angler of Azeroth. Winning the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza or the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby will be enough to meet the requirements for the achievement. We're not quite sure as to what the prizes are yet, but according to the Warcraft twitter, a new heirloom ring awaits the winner! Patch 3.3 is the last major patch of Wrath of the Lich King. With the new Icecrown Citadel 5-man dungeons and 10/25-man raid arriving soon, patch 3.3 will deal the final blow to the Arthas. • Cooking for the holidays

Artwair complains over on the forums that there is cooking required for the What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been achievement (that some of you have done -- grats! -- and others of you are deciding to do in the next year), saying that something as significant as leveling up Cooking all the way shouldn't be required for what is basically an optional achievement. But Kisirani replies with as good an answer as you'll find: the achievement is designed to send you all over the world, including to some professions and abilities that you wouldn't be leveling otherwise. Especially because the achievement is optional, it's not out-of-place to ask for some cooking to happen. And I'll add that cooking is worth leveling anyway -- not only does it get you some nice buffs, let you use up some of the trash collecting in you bags, and hook up your guild or raid with some excellent items, but it's pretty easy to do, especially if you do it with fishing (which is also very useful by itself). While she's at it, Kisirani also provides a nice tease at Pilgrim's Bounty, which isn't a part of the big meta-achievement anyway, but will have some extra recipes to find and cook, as well as a new Thanksgiving-style celebration (two words: "Turkey shooter"). Can't wait to see it.

Writing all of this Guildwatch stuff this week has really had me pining for a hardcore raiding guild lately -- I don't know if I'd have the time or the interest to show up for all of the raids, but man, it must be a good feeling to roll up through Ulduar with nine other people and walk away with an awesome title and/or a Rusted Proto-drake like the folks above. • Pacifist Priest dings 80 on Friday

    09.02.2009

Reinisch is the pacifist Undead Priest who's aiming to make it to level 80 without killing anything at all (he's the same player as Noor, who we interviewed way back when and followed up with a while ago), and apparently this Friday, he's going to do it. He's inviting everybody out to a party on Friday afternoon, September 4th, at 6pm server over on The Venture Company. He's going to turn in a Dalaran fishing quest to do it, and he's got quick and easy directions posted on how to get to Dalaran as a level 1.Though there might not be as much going on as other big server parties, it's probably worth going just to see him ding level 80 and the level 1 chaos in Dalaran that will ensue, but it's quite an achievement for sure, especially considering that this Priest was actually created before Noor -- he's named after a German priest who stood up to Hitler in the name of peace and was executed for it. It might be nice just to stop by and give the guy a grats as he dings -- pretty impressive to take a goal that most people would say was impossible, and do it in the game not once but twice on two different classes and factions.

For whatever reason, third parties are hesitant to use the word "Wii" in their Wii game titles, but "We" is catching on. We Ski, We Sing, and now Rapala: We Fish are demonstrating the new lazy way to title a Wii game. It's the modern equivalent of "[game series] 64."Rapala: We Fish, according to publisher Activision, is the first Wii-exclusive title in the Rapala fishing game series. It includes a rod and reel shell for the Wiimote, and features Mii support and four-player split-screen multiplayer. Oh, and fish with "zany personalities and hilarious facial expressions" that will make you feel terrible about hooking them and pulling them into your boat. After you've caught a fish in a tournament, you must then race back to land in your boat to turn it in -- while other players attempt to knock the fish out of your boat. Which ... actually sounds like a pretty enjoyable gameplay element. Rapala: We Fish will be out in North America on September 29.%Gallery-71310% [Image credit]

A week has passed since BlizzCon 2009 and we're still digging up more news, getting clarification from the blues, and analyzing all of the panels. Last week, Insider Trader discussed some of the major professions-related features coming up in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the next expansion pack. Pass through the break to learn all about: Profession racial abilities and how they will be changing. The new direction for Alchemy. A totally revamped Fishing system! Archaeology details and speculation about the leveling process. The evolution of Inscription. Then, continue on to part three of this discussion to learn more about: Reforging and (not) repairing our own gear. Woodworking. Profession specializations and the new direction for differentiation.

The second and final class, item, and profession panel has concluded. Disappointingly, the presentation part of the panel was mainly a re-run of yesterday's, but the Q&A, of course, was all-new. There were even a few new tidbits in the presentation. Here are some parts of the presentation that are not repeats from yesterday: They didn't give any new classes to Draenei because there are too many of the space goats already. There's a chance that Hunter Aspects will go away entirely. New tidbit on Archaeology: putting pieces of artifacts together sends you to "face some sort of challenge" out in the world. They like the way fishing works in Animal Crossing, and might look to that for inspiration on how to rework the process. And here are the good parts from the Q&A:

  • A bag for Cooking

    by

    07.29.2009

Profession bags are a godsend for almost anyone leveling up a profession -- while the loss of bag space in favor of specialty slots can be a problem sometimes at the lower levels, almost all high level characters can definitely make use of at least one profession bag, to hold all of the extra ore, or gems, or leather, or whatever else you're hauling around all the time. But Natalia over on WoW LJ makes an excellent point: just where is our cooking bag? And how about a fishing bag? You might argue that only the gathering professions are meant to have bags (the Blacksmithing bag is actually a Mining bag, so even Engineers can make use of it), but that's not quite true: Engineering does have its own bags, as does Inscription. Cooking and/or Fishing, you'd think, should both have their own profession bags.Of course, they are both secondary professions, so maybe Blizzard believes that because they're more or less optional, you should be able to carry around all of your food and spices and lures in your regular bags. But cooking especially has gotten pretty complicated lately (there are a few foods that you've got to have in your bags regularly to do the daily quests, especially Chilled Meat), and so a lot of players would definitely find a use for a dedicated bag. First Aid, probably not, but Cooking and Fishing? Definitely. And if you want to really dream, maybe food could actually get a bonus from being kept in a special "refridgerated" bag -- nothing big, just maybe a few extra points of the bonus stat or a little longer duration when you actually take care of your food rather than just tossing it in with all of the Kobold eyeballs and oily swords and cloth that you're also carrying around. But that would be extra -- for now, just a bigger bag meant for cooking and fishing utensils would be fine, thanks.

Revolutionary motion controls come to Xbox 360 (and Wii) ... in new fishing game

Click to embiggen. Griffin International's upcoming controller for the Xbox 360 may be one of the craziest looking peripherals ever designed. No, this isn't a sex toy. Rather, it's the first motion-sensing controller to release on the 360, and it's for the most exciting sport ever created by man -- fishing. The fishing rod controller will be bundled with Bass Pro Shops: The Strike, a new fishing game that promises to appeal to "gamers of all levels." For simulation fans, the game's focus on accurate depictions of lures, reels and rods will undoubtedly be enticing. However, the developers have also accounted for casual gamers that might not want to sit around for hours on end, waiting for the perfect fish to catch. A simplified arcade mode will highlight "hot spots" for fish, whilst making the process of snagging a fish much easier. In addition to the arcade mode, there will also be mini-games, such as a boat racing challenge. The game and controller bundle will cost $80 and will be sold at Bass Pro Shops and other retailers in September. A Wii version is also in the works, which will include a plastic fishing rod shell to put around the controller. An early hands-on of the Xbox 360 version was accessible for us fishing novices, while the promise of added depth certainly looked convincing. One note of trouble, though: the early prototype we played with broke apart in the middle of play. We were told final production models will be sturdier, but we thought we'd pass on the warning.%Gallery-68110%
