    It's been said that the best things in life are free. Whoever said it probably didn't have MMOs in mind, but it's certainly true that there are many quality games out there that are completely free to download and play. Here's a list of the top 5 free massively multiplayer online games.Now, to pre-empt the equally massive glut of angry emails and comments I'm sure to receive for leaving someone's favorite title off of this list, I'm going to state right up front that these choices are based completely on the number of times I've heard them mentioned with favor by a variety of different sources. I make no guarantees of having played any of these MMOs, so they're not necessarily my personal picks. But if I keep hearing people mention them in different contexts, there must be something to them. In short, these games are popular for a reason, and if you haven't played them, you might find that they're worth your download. We begin after the jump!

  • Hellgate: London developer chat on IRC today

    If you are interested in chatting with the developers of Hellgate: London and you are available at 7pm EST today, then fire up your favorite IRC client and get ready to talk to Flagship Studios.   • Mythos' 3rd zone on display in new 5-minute gameplay movie

    For those of you teetering on the brink of playing Mythos, unsure if it's worth your time, take a look at the newest gameplay movie from Flagship, which features the chaotic melée action that makes this still-in-beta MMO so much fun.In addition to watching a little Gremlin drop some indiscriminate justice on the local wildlife, this video also previews an upcoming 3rd zone still to be added to the beta test: an icy, Wintry environment that looks as good as the previous two zones. I have to say, even though the gameplay is unvaried, it's still the perfect antidote to the sometimes overly-strategic and by-the-math gameplay of longer-lived titles -- nothing but hack 'n' slash, and who doesn't love that?[Via computerandvideogames.com]

  • Mythos' Executive Producer gets interviewed

    Over at Stropp's World, there's a very good interview with Max Schaefer -- Executive Producer for Mythos. To clarify; Mythos is a top-down Diablo-style massively game that's been in beta testing for a very long time now.Upon release Flagship Studios plans for Mythos to be free-to-play with an RMT model. In the interview itself, Max discusses their decision to use an RMT system. Citing the developer's desire to provide players with a "robust free experience" but offer attractive options through RMT to obtain extra luxuries and ways to improve their adventure. One thing we were happy to take from the interview is that Flagship knows better than to just sell the best items in their game -- meaning the only way to get the best loot in Mythos is to kill stuff. Beyond the RMT issue (which some may or may not like, but hey the game's free right?) there is a lot of talk about future features. A crafting system is on the way, although not very much is known about it right now. There will be basic PvP dueling and the Shadow World; a series of portals throughout the regular game world, which lead to an exact mirror world where PvP is everywhere. Also, other modes like group vs. group, Capture the Flag-type and other non-player killing competitions are in the works. We have to admit that the Shadow World concept interests us, although it's not very surprising to hear.[Thanks, Stropp]

  • Behind the Curtain: What's in a name?

    How much attention do you pay to the names behind the MMOs we're playing just now? Do you dig up as much information as you can on the developers, producer and designers involved in up and coming games? Do you even pay any attention at all?I'll be honest – I picked up Star Wars Galaxies based on the licence alone. While I've been a gamer since my Uncle gave me a ZX Spectrum as a child, I didn't know anything about the people behind Galaxies. I had heard about Everquest of course – I wasn't stupid after all – but Galaxies was my first MMO, and I was a noob in every sense of the word. I didn't know anything about the designers, the developers, and I didn't even think to check up on them.I was a little more aware when I came round to World of Warcraft. I was, and still am, a big Diablo 2, fan, so I knew who Blizzard were. I hadn't picked up Warcraft 3 when it came out, due to the PC I had t the time not being to run it, but I knew that it'd been a huge commercial and critical success for Blizzard, so I knew that it was a safe bet. Plus, it was taking the world by storm already, so it was a bit of a no-brainer. Maybe I'm just older and wiser now, or maybe the information is just easier to get a hold of, but I pay more attention to the people actually making the game that I'm interested in – I thought this week, we could have a look at some of the names you should be aware of.

  • Switchblade adding support for Hellgate: London and Half-Life 2

    Some of you may have already been playing your World of Warcraft on a game controller with the aid of Switchblade. For the uninitiated, Switchblade is a highly configurable piece of software that will have you playing WoW with your Xbox 360 gamepad, or other controller, in no time. The company behind this nifty little application, Blue Orb, have announced that they will be adding support for two more games, Hellgate: London and Half-Life 2.The updated client will be released on January 29th. Once it is added, users should be able to switch between "Blades" on the software to go between the supported games. Along with the main upgrade, there will also be some new class-specific templates added for WoW to make setup even easier. The best part about Switchblade is that it's free, so if you want to try it out with WoW (and the other games after the 29th) then visit the official site.[Via GamesIndustry.biz]

  • Stonehenge is open for business

    Those of you who've been waiting for Stonehenge Chronicles -- the first major content update for Hellgate: London -- to finally be released can stop as of yesterday. The content went live for players yesterday morning after being delayed a day over some technical bugs. Aside from all of the new content featured in and around Stonehenge, all players get to taste some brand new features, game tweaks and the newly redesigned Evoker class. Among the new features are scaling interface elements -- something everyone appreciates, a streamlining of the crafting system and the addition of account-based buddy lists.We're glad to see that Flagship Studios is also addressing bugs as well as improving some player texturing. However what would really help in the future are instability updates for the game engine and maybe an improved chat window. More content is a good start, but while you're busy working on new stuff for those subscribers it would be a good idea to make sure new players have reason to pick the game up as well.

    There's a contest going on at MMOCrunch until Monday January 21st at 10:00 am PST, where two lucky people can each win a Mythos beta invite. Now, we know what you're probably thinking, "These beta invites are everywhere!" and you're right, Mythos beta invites are practically falling out of the sky. However, some readers out there haven't gotten in on the chopping, hacking, slashing action yet and as fellow hack n' slash junkies we feel for them.It's a good thing people in this beta are so giving, because if you haven't tried Mythos yet you really should. We do feel that we should warn you, however. If you're the type of person who gets incredibly addicted to pointing, clicking and subsequently killing/maiming/exploding all sorts of enemies you might want to think twice. Many of you surely have families, friends and concentrated doses of the free-to-play monster may be detrimental to your life.For those of you not sure what all the fuss is about, check this video out.

  • Hellgate: London gets its first content update

    Mark your calenders for January 21st, 2008 because that's the date when you can expect Flagship Studios' first content update to hit for Hellgate: London. The update -- titled Stonehenge Chronicles -- is expanding the game world beyond London itself, opening the areas around Stonehenge. Expect lots of open, outdoor wilderness as the developers wanted something different from the main game's locales. Players can expect three areas to explore, The Caste Caves (not to be confused with other caves), Moloch's Lair and The Wild. There are four dungeons within The Caste Caves and each dungeon will contain a spectral overlord to blast, slice and bludgeon into pieces.Upon completion of The Caste Caves, players gain entry to Moloch's Lair, wherein a great battle with the demon Moloch -- the great dropper of unique items -- ensues. Finally, The Wild has three mini-raid areas which progress in difficulty and eventually require players to form full-sized parties.Also, this update will add improvements to the game UI, a "large number" of skill balance alterations and a PvP dueling arena. Lastly, Hellgate: London subscribers will optionally be able to pay for their subscriptions through PayPal and PayByCash.We have to say that definitely seems like a lot of content, but we'll have to wait and see what players think after January 21st rolls around. It's barely been three months since the game launched in North America, so it seems the developers are keeping their promise. It all depends on how often these updates come out in the end. If they continue at the pace of three months between updates, Hellgate: London could become a game to watch for a future purchase.

  • Mythos trailer #2 now showing

    The next trailer for hack-and-slash freebie MMO Mythos is available to view, and shows off what the game is all about -- hacking, followed by some slashing. Okay, and some pew-pewing.The simple fact is that the game looks and is just plain fun.The first trailer for the game featured input from a producer at the team behind the game, Flagship Studios, but number two is basically just showing you a day in the life of a dungeon-crawling hero. Even without all of the commentary, the message is the same -- Mythos is the addictive little point-and-clicker you've been looking for.

  • My loots, let me show you them

    After another night spent raiding and ultimately losing the roll for some highly sought-after piece of gear for the umpteenth time, have you ever stopped and asked yourself, "Isn't there a better way they could do this?" The answer, if Stropp of Stropp's World is to be believed, may have been found by those crazy folks at Flagship Studios. Mythos, their new Diablo-killer, will be using a loot system that guarantees all players will be rewarded for their contributions to a battle. Upon slaying a foe, each player will have a separate loot screen from which they can pick up their reward. There's no rolling, no ninjaing, and (god willing) no whining.Stropp himself wonders whether this sort of system could be adopted by other mainstream MMOs as a way to eliminate all the drama that normally surrounds the whole looting process. To me the issue seems fairly straight-forward. In a more casual game like Mythos, where the gear is really secondary to the experience, a loot system that equitably distributes loot is the easiest way to keep gamers geared and happy. But when it comes to more serious MMOs like WoW or EQ2, the gear is really an end to itself. If ever player got an epic every time they did a raid encounter, people would have finished out the content months ago. Still, it's an interest thought that'll get you thinking about how future MMOs could improve the process.

    Having to find quality Machinima for two blog posts daily can be torture. Most people won't spring for a paid copy of Fraps or gamecam, so I'm stuck looking at watermarks. That's almost an instant disqualification for consideration.Enter WeGame, which would be just like any other video sharing site if it didn't have one major difference. They offer free, easy to use recording software to their users. As a matter of fact, it's so simple that I was able to record six quick videos, review them, and choose one to upload within 30 minutes of downloading the program.   • CES 2008: discussion panel on virtual worlds and the "MMO explosion"

    Gamasutra has posted a panel discussion covering many different facets of virtual worlds and MMOs in general. The panel consists of several panelists coming from all sorts of companies from AMD to Turbine. Overall the panel discusses many of the issues you always hear about when virtual worlds/MMOs come up. You've got talk of evolution within the industry, in-game advertising, global relevance (aka "how can we conquer the world?"), virtual goods/secondary markets (RMT/item selling) and of course cannibalizing older markets.The discussion on each piece is mostly similar to what has been said already. There are a few intriuging quotes from some of the panelists throughout. Their conclusion to the discussion happens to be focused on a few aspects, but we found one was more interesting than the rest. Steve Goldstein from Flagship Studios had this to say, "As we spend the next three or four days talking about margins and monetizing, we shouldn't lose sight of the miraculous industry we're in, where people are selling imaginary gold and building real relationships across the world."Probably the most prolific statement of the entire discussion, Goldstein manages to bullseye the nail on the head.

Here we get to meet Gargantua, one of the beasties you might encounter in Stonehenge.   • The Stonehenge Chronicles delayed for Hellgate: London

    Hellgate: London's Patch 1.0 aka Stonehenge aka The Stonehenge Chronicles has been delayed until January. This will be the first major quarterly update and, if released in January, will still be on schedule. Bill Roper, in a letter sent to registered players, said that they want to take the time to make this patch right:If there is one lesson we've learned from launching Hellgate: London, our releases should be a question of "what" and not "when".Huzzah.In other patch news, Single Player Patch 0.6 is live and available for download. Multiplayer Patch 0.7 has been live since December 14th on US servers and went live December 19th on EU server Sydonai. Subscribers who login to Patch 0.7 will find that Nemo in Holbrook Station has a goodie for them. My first try to receive it got me the much treasured Server Error, but after restarting the game I received the even more intriguing Transmogrifying Cube which, as promised previously, will look familiar to Diablo II fans.Patch 1.0 notes from the Test Center are after the jump.

  • Mythos gets a giant update

    Mythos, the free-to-play MMO from developer Flagship Studios, has just announced a new update to the software, and the list of features, improvements, and bug fixes is extraordinarily long and satisfying. I'll embed the list after the jump, but here are a few of the things that stood out to me: Hardcore Mode: If you play in this mode, your character can die, and that's forever! Maybe someone was reading my post and decided it sounded like a good idea! Guilds are now available to create for the cost of 5 gold Hardware mouse cursors: No lag for me anymore, yay and my favorite for a laugh: 'Ants are now more interesting as monsters' Best part of all, Mythos promises no patch download is necessary; simply logging in will provide you with the update.   • More patches incoming for Hellgate: London

    Patch 0.6 is on the test server and Patch 0.7 is on deck for Hellgate: London. The two most notable changes on Patch 0.6 are: The invisible group member bug has been fixed. The bug that unequips engineer pet weapons is improved, but not fixed. There's no official word as to when Patch 0.6 will be live, but they say that Patch 0.7 will be hitting the test servers next week and therefore, we can assume that Patch 0.6 will go live before then.Patch 0.7 will include: Memory usage improvements UI tweaks Subscriber items and quests for Diablo 2 fans The official patch notes for 0.6 are after the jump.

  • Blizzard was only expecting 1 million WoW subscribers

    Former Blizzard producer Bill Roper described the early days of World of Warcraft's development to CVG, saying, "we were hoping we'd be able to sell a million copies of the game." He pointed out that at the time, EverQuest was the gold standard for MMOs, and it only had 500,000 subscribers. "It would have been impossible to predict that World of Warcraft would take off as a cultural phenomenon as it did," he said.He's right; people knew World of Warcraft would be a comparatively big deal, but how could they have predicted 9.3 million players? Throughout the history of persistent world online games, we've been surprised again and again at just how large the market for them can be. There are studios out there who think they can take it even further -- BioWare, for instance. Or maybe the industry will fragment into niche games now. The point is, you can't always predict this stuff. That's what makes it so exciting.In case you were wondering what Roper is up to now, his company Flagship Studios recently released Hellgate: London -- more of a niche title than a mainstream record-buster. Flagship is also working on Mythos, a Diablo-esque-dungeon-crawler.
