  • I just don't understand why Samsung's Galaxy View exists

The process is always the same. New gadget arrives, I use it heavily for a few days, and then slowly settle into the process of figuring out if it in fact serves a need in my life. Things were different with Samsung's massive 18-inch Galaxy View "tablet." I've had it for about two weeks now and I've utterly failed to find a use case for it. On the surface, it's not a bad product, but I just can't figure out why I'd buy one -- particularly at a price of $599.

AT&T announced on Monday that it will offer service for the gigantor 18.4-inch Galaxy View beginning Friday, November 20th. The tablet supports DirecTV and, as such, AT&T customers that sign up for a new satellite package as well as the two-year wireless service will get their View for $100. Existing customers will have to buy a new line on a smartphone plan as well as the two-year service agreement to get their View discounted. The tablet will be available in both retail outlets and online at ATT.com.

Is it a TV? Is it a tablet? As far as Samsung is concerned, its enormous new Galaxy View is a little bit of both. We took one home for some hands-on time on our own turf, and after a day the View seems to have struck a decent balance between the two. Don't get us wrong: it's still a little silly and will continue to inspire endless Twitter jokes, but the View has the chance to carve out a curious (and possibly lucrative) new niche.

After being teased and leaked multiple times over the past few weeks, Samsung today officially revealed its supersized 18.4-inch tablet, the Galaxy View. As you might expect, the company's pegging this as the perfect device for people who consume heavy amounts of media -- you know, through Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go and other streaming services. Aside from its absurdly large screen, which features a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, the Android-powered Galaxy View comes with a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, an undisclosed 1.6GHz octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 32 or 64GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD). There's also a nano-SIM slot for LTE connectivity, while the decent 5,700mAh battery promises up to 8 hours of video play. Unfortunately, Samsung hasn't announced pricing or availability yet, but we'll likely learn those details in the coming days.

It's hard to visualize how big an 18.4-inch tablet is without reference. Nevertheless, if you want to see Samsung's upcoming enormous device called the Galaxy View up close, check out the images above, courtesy of evleaks. The South Korean manufacturer first gave us a glimpse of the tablet back in September, clearly showing its Microsoft Surface-esque kickstand. More recently, early listings on third-party sellers spotted by several websites revealed that the 32GB version will cost you $600. Those listings have since been removed, but according GSM Arena, it's powered by an Exynos 7580 SoC, has a fullHD resolution display, 32GB of storage, 2GB of RAM and a microSD slot that supports cards up to 128GB in capacity. There's a basic, WiFi-only model and another one with 3G and LTE, which will definitely be more expensive of the two. Since $600 is still cheaper than the most basic iPad Pro, though, we're guessing the whole line will be priced lower than Apple's smaller-but-still-gigantic tablet.

Samsung is making a habit of teasing its next announcement at the end of launch events. After today's Gear S2 official reveal, the company teased a new tablet: the Galaxy View. Of course, details are quite scarce right now, but we do know that the slate sports a Surface-esque kickstand that's either built in or added by a case. The device maker only offered the hints of "think bigger" and "a new dimension of entertainment" alongside the promise that we'll get more info next month. And when those specs emerge, you can bet we'll bring you the latest. Check out all the news from Berlin at our IFA 2015 hub.
