This week HBO launches its new sci-fi/comedy series Avenue 5, which starts Hugh Laurie as the captain of a space cruise ship. If that's not your speed, then you can bring Ang Lee's Gemini Man home, albeit with half of its maximum frame rate, at just 60 FPS in Dolby Vision HDR on Ultra HD Blu-ray. There are a flood of new options on streaming, from comedy specials on Amazon Prime, to Netflix's Aaron Hernandez documentary to the season finale of M. Night Shyamalan's Servant on Apple TV+. Two of the highlights are part two of YouTube's Robert Downey Jr.-hosted docu-series on AI, and season two of Sex Education on Netflix. Look after the break to check out each day's highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

The holiday is throwing a wrench in this week's TV schedule, but no matter what, the highlight this week would be that other Star Wars finale. The Mandalorian is wrapping up its eight-episode run on Friday morning, and that might be the gift I'm looking forward to the most this week. Beyond the flagship Disney+ series, Netflix is bringing a second season of two highly-anticipated shows, You and Lost in Space. Also new this week is Ang Lee's Gemini Man -- you won't get a 120fps copy, but at least you can own it at home in 4K and HDR. There isn't much new this week in the way of video games or Blu-ray releases, but sports fans can check out college bowl games and a full slate of NBA action on Christmas Day. Look after the break to check out each day's highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

Things happened this week, such as Alphabet commencing commercial flights of its Wing drone delivery program in Christiansburg, Virginia. But they weren't the only tech corporation that decided to put things where they previously were not at speeds the public is unaccustomed to.

  • Ang Lee chases cinema’s 120FPS future with ‘Gemini Man’

Ang Lee is curious. That's why the Oscar-winning director has spent the past decade fighting against the limitations of cinema -- 2D screens and the 24 frames-per-second standard -- instead of just making sure-fire hits. With Life of Pi, he dove into elaborate 3D filmmaking and creating life-like digital animals. After the global success of that film, he set his sights on Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. That drama wasn't particularly well received by audiences or critics, but it allowed him to explore the uncanny realism of combining high framerates (HFR) of 120 FPS, together with 4K and 3D. Now with Gemini Man, Lee's latest film starring Will Smith (and his younger digital double), he's trying to bring his new vision of cinema to a mainstream action film.

You can see 'Gemini Man' in 120 fps or 4K, but not both

Ang Lee wants people to see his latest movie, Gemini Man, in 3D at 4K resolution and 120 frames per second. But it'll be a tough ask to watch the Will Smith thriller that way if you're in the US -- it seems no American theaters will project it in the director's intended format.

Watch the trailer for Ang Lee's 120 fps film 'Gemini Man'

We knew Will Smith was preparing to fight a younger version of himself in the upcoming Ang Lee sci-fi film Gemini Man. Now, thanks to the trailer released today, we get a glimpse of what that will look like. The two-minute clip shows present-day Smith as Henry Brogan, an elite but aging assassin who's being chased by a younger clone. Visual effects -- similar to those that allowed Samuel L. Jackson to digitally de-age in Captain Marvel -- will make it possible for Smith to play both roles.
