  • Resellers taking advantage of World Tour shortages

It's not so hard to believe, really. People have been doing it for many years now, since the Tickle Me Elmo dolls became so popular, really. Folks did it the last two years with the Wii and now, with the news that Guitar Hero: World Tour's full band kit bundle could be kind of scarce during the holidays, folks are taking advantage yet again."In order to assess continued demand for the title, we conducted proprietary channel checks both at major online retailers and at bricks-and-mortar retail locations across the country," said analysts at Cowen and Company, adding: "resellers on Amazon.com are pricing the band kit at close to USD 300, well above the USD 189 list price." Wow, that's quite the significant increase. While not as severe as it is on Amazon, eBay users are also selling the full band kit at higher prices than it should.Remember, holiday shoppers: get out there early and get out there often. If you're trying to track down one of the full band kits for Guitar Hero: World Tour, then we'd suggest you get on a first name basis with the store managers in your area.%Gallery-23491%

  • The next evolution of rhythm games: Bike Hero

Okay, so yes, the video above is not of an actual game. It's also not a video created by devoted fans. No, it's a video created by an ad agency -- and paid for by Activision -- designed to hock Guitar Hero. But does that make it less awesome? We're inclined to say that it does not. Furthermore, we're hopeful that the video will inspire creative people to discover what other games are best represented via bicycle. Might we suggest Bikes of War and Bike 4 Dead? Get to it, internet.[Via Joystiq]

That's right, the video you're going to see after the break, which expertly blends Guitar Hero and bike riding, is the best thing you're going to see all day and (unless your firstborn child is due by Friday) probably all week. Seriously, go watch it. You'll have to hire a gang of neighborhood kids to pinch you before you'll be convinced you're not dreaming. But is it really made by some kid and his friends with wayyyy too much spare time and not a well-funded ad agency? Well, no. But let's all just pretend so we can keep enjoying ourselves. Agreed? Agreed.[Update: Stephen Totilo got Activision to spill the whole thing, and it's rife with some pretty hilarious back-pedaling. ... Get it? Back-pedaling?][Thanks, everyone who sent this in.]

  • LGJ: User Content Continued

    by

Each week Mark Methenitis contributes Law of the Game on Joystiq ("LGJ"), a column on legal issues as they relate to video games: Between Guitar Hero: World Tour and Little Big Planet, user content is king going into this holiday season. Last time on LGJ, we talked about the issue of the rights of the user. This week, I wanted to take the opposite approach and hopefully outline the legal issues that make Microsoft and Sony's lawyers cringe. These are the reasons for the complex terms of use and mildly mysterious disappearances of some content from the sharing servers. While there are a myriad of potential legal theories that could be employed if someone wanted to sue based on user content, I'm going to focus on what I think are the more likely and/or more plausible ones.In case you're still living in a dial-up world and haven't experienced user content, the basics are fairly simple: People who play the game create content and upload it for others to use. In the games I mentioned above, that content is put up on servers for the game maintained either by the network (PSN, Xbox Live) or by the developer/publisher. This content varies by game, but it may be new levels, scenarios, maps, or songs. The content is based on in-game editing tools, and has been really successful in games like Halo 3 with Forge. It can also help develop a community around the game and extend the shelf life of the title.

  • DLC limitations mean no Hendrix for Guitar Hero: World Tour

    by

Activision made a statement over the weekend about the nature of their Guitar Hero: World Tour "track pack" downloads and what it means for the Wii version. Pressure from two outside parties has constrained the DLC catalog, unfortunately. Some labels or artists will only give Activision the rights to distribute track packs, with individual sale of the contained songs prohibited. And for some reason, according to the statement, "the Wii's infrastructure only allows us the ability to release single songs as DLC."That means that some artists will have to be excluded from the Wii's DLC offerings entirely. Like, for example, Jimi Hendrix. Because of these restrictions, none of the Jimi Hendrix tracks from the PS3/Xbox 360 set will be available. So it won't just be the limits of your ability that keep you from playing Hendrix songs.[Thanks, Ferco!]%Gallery-23491%

  • Hendrix DLC won't come to Guitar Hero on Wii

And now, our only White Men Can't Jump reference for all of 2008. We hope you enjoy it.Those who prefer their Guitar Hero World Tour on the Wii may be able to listen to Jimi Hendrix, but they can't hear him ... at least, not while they're playing. Activision told MTV Multiplayer that the recently released Hendrix three-track pack would not be coming to the Wii, as it only allows for single-track downloads. "Certain artists prefer to keep the integrity of the track pack rather than releasing singles," the rep said.We don't know what to add other than to say we're surprised that Jimi Hendrix's ghost takes such an interest in the Wii's infrastructure.

  • The Killers DLC also coming to Rock Band Music Store

The spirit of competition between Activision and Harmonix's respective rhythm franchises is still very much alive and well -- shortly after Activision announced that a trio of tunes from post-punk darlings The Killers would be making their way onto Guitar Hero: World Tour as DLC, MTV let it slip to Wired that they would be adding their own Killers triple-pack to the Rock Band Music Store on the very same day (Nov. 25). Man, what a bizarre coincidence! Two of the three songs which are about to be thrust into Harmonix's already intimidating music library are relative oldies: "Mr. Brightside" and "Smile Like You Mean It" -- but a title from the Killers' new album, Day & Age, will also make an appearance: "Spaceman". The article on Wired mentioned nothing of pricing details -- though it's probably safe to assume they'll match the $2.00 (160) per song/ $5.50 (440) per pack price point we've all come to know and love over the past year.

Update: RMC was kind enough to shoot us an email to notify that MTV has since updated their story as their figures were inaccurate. Turns out, the Xbox 360 version of the game won out. Bummer. Wii owners love their Guitar Hero, as it's revealed that Guitar Hero: World Tour, the latest and greatest in the franchise, sold more on Wii than any other system. With the recent NPD numbers, MTV Multiplayer also secured exact sales figures for Activision's latest title. Across all platforms, Guitar Hero: World Tour sold 534,000 copies. Of those, 183,000 were for the Wii. We know a lot of you were excited for World Tour up until release. Did you pick it up? Activision will shortly be serving up another three Guitar Hero: World Tour tracks for download. This latest batch is from The Killers, who should really cheer up a bit, considering they're international rock stars with their music in a Guitar Hero game. The Guitar Hero World Tour Hendrix pack is now on Xbox Live -- so sayeth Major Nelson. As it turns out, the Hendrix pack has nothing to do with an Ultor security technician from Red Faction nor a town in Bryan County, Oklahoma. Bummer. But hey, if you're into this guitar playing guy from the 60s, you might enjoy this track pack. Hendrix Track Pack (440 / $5.50) "If 6 Was 9" "Little Wing" "Fire" (Live from Woodstock) No word on its availability for PlayStation 3 or Wii. We've embedded videos of the songs after the break.

Gene Simmons is getting himself a ticket on the money train that is the rhythm game scene with the branded guitar peripheral you see above. While on other consoles the peripheral will work with both Rock Band and Guitar Hero, for Wii, it'll only work with the latter, initially, as the version hitting shelves on December 1st is limited in functionality. If you can wait, though, on January 31st a version that is compatible with both games will release. The listed price for the peripheral is $79.99. Anybody like what they see?[Via Joystiq]

  • User-made Zelda, Mario tracks removed from GH: World Tour's servers

    11.08.2008

We imagine that the same knee-jerk reaction that causes first-time players of LittleBigPlanet to craft startlingly realistic (and often mobile) genitalia is the same force that prompts players of Guitar Hero: World Tour to re-create popular songs using the game's expansive music creator. However, World Tour director Brian Bright warned against such unauthorized covers before the game came out, promising to delete any copyright-unfriendly material -- a promise Neversoft and Activision Blizzard recently fulfilled.Among the user-created tracks with the most downloads are, unsurprisingly, numerous songs from other video games -- themes from Zelda and Mario titles being the most popular. However, in the first mighty swoop of their eraser, the game's moderators removed the recreated Nintendo tunes from their servers (but not from the hard drives of those who have already downloaded the tracks). We can't help but agree with Activision's stance on copyrighted content -- that said, you give us some Gitaroo Man covers, internet. You give them to us now.

  • Nintendo songs removed from GH: World Tour store

    11.07.2008

We hope you already managed to download your favorite Nintendo songs from the Guitar Hero: World Tour music sharing service, as MTV reports that they are being removed. Multiplayer guesses (as do we) that recreations of popular Nintendo themes from games like Zelda and Super Mario Bros are being removed for copyright violation. Of course, there are still plenty of other game tunes out there, including songs from Doom, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Bubble Bobble (does that one just loop forever?). You can even still download Portal's now famous "Still Alive," though multiplayer notes that it suffers from the lack of lyrics. Of course, you can always get your "Still Alive" fix on Rock Band, so it's all good.If you've already downloaded any of these songs, fear not: Activision can't remove them from your hard drive. Just make sure you think about it before deleting one. Also, you should check out this Brinstar track from Metroid. It's sweet. That is all.
