Starcraft pro gamers: a lesson in culture, ownage
One of today's hottest videos on YouTube is a recent match between Starcraft legend SlayerS_'BoxeR' (real name Lim Yo-Hwan) and Nal_rA (real name Kang Min). that was televised in Korea. Those who still play Starcraft (and with the sequel just announced, there's no better time to start again) could glean a lot from the 30-minute video, while nonenthusiasts can get a kick out of seeing professional coverage of a decade-old PC game, with involved spectators and expressive announcers.Fun fact: Hwan, also known as the "Terran Emporer," reportedly earns about US $390,000 and has a professional record of 500 wins and 336 losses. The second Rayman Raving Rabbids is in production, and GameTrailers has posted a series of in-game clips from Ubisoft's gaming event. The Rabbids trailer and these clips seem to downplay Rayman even more than the first game. (Here's hoping the shipping version has little to do with the appendage-free mascot. We collectively yawned a few days ago when the latest Mario Strikers Charged trailer appeared online -- it's a pre-animated video with no in-game footage. But the U.K. Mario Strikers commercial tipped us over the edge, and we're showing those videos in this post, especially after today's news of a U.S. July 30 release.While we're glad that the Wii is getting some online action, we chortled at the tagline of "the first online game on Wii." As baseball players keep bulking up in unnatural ways, we wonder if this extreme version of the sport is what fans want to see; upcoming 2K Sports baseball game, The Bigs, seems to take that pro-girth approach. ("Big" is right there in the title.) Two trailers for this NFL Blitz- and NBA Jam-style baseball title show some of the flashy effects.And maybe we shouldn't connect The Bigs with the current state of baseball; if we want straight simulation, we can play another title. Today's hottest video goes out for all you Halo 3 fans -- at least 5 million, by our counts. Microsoft employee Mr. Jukes, reportedly the most fanatical player in the company, has created a video of his playtime with the internal beta. Bungie has released the video for the world to see. They also remind the fanbase that this beta is a bit older than what will soon be released for mass enjoyment testing. "This was fully sanctioned and approved by Bungie," the developer added, "unlike some of those other 'leaked' videos that have ended up online." Oh, and Jared? Cancel all your weekend plans. The hottest JRPG video: Square Enix Party 2007 TV spot
How does a 14-second commercial reach YouTube's most viewed Gadget & Games video page for today? When it's about Square Enix, that's how! Square Enix's Party 2007, honoring Final Fantasy's 20th anniversary, is this month. Shown in the video are snippets from at least four different games, including Dragon Quest 9. The announcer, speaking in Japanese, promises "the newest Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles." We've heard about quite a few FF games being announced lately, and we're expecting at least a sighting of Kingdom Hearts. The party is May 12 to 13 at the Makuhari Messe; according to the commercial, admission is free. Those interested can find out more information at the party's official page. Today's most 'behind the lines' video: the making of C&C3's cinematics
This is a documentary for Command & Conquer 3 fans or anyone with a penchant for Telecommunication Arts: a four-part documentary on the making of the cinematics for the strategy title.Part one is a discussion with some of the producers concerning the decision to go with real life actors as opposed to, say, CG characters. Part two features interviews with Nod actors Joe Kucan (a very soft-spoken individual unlike his Kane counterpart), Tricia Helfer and Josh Holloway, and GDI actress Jennifer Morrison. Part three continues the interviews with GDI actors Michael Ironside, Billy Dee "don't call me Lando" Williams, John Huck, Shannon Cook and Grace Park. Part four discusses the setting, costume and makeup designs. All with behind-the-scenes footage of the production with green and blue screens very visible. Our favorite line comes from Ironside in part three. Discussing how the actors needed to act to the camera, he said that he had to relate to a range of personality "male, female ranging from 16 to 66 and different mode of dress at different times of day with different forms of food in their hand while they're playing." We're a little confused by Boogie. Is it a singing game? A dancing game with a lip-syncing character? Both? Where are the DDR-style arrows? The fine folks at pabr.org have engineered a Sixaxis controller into a remote for other devices, much like the frenzy of Wiimote hacking. The demonstration shows the controller tilting and rotating a plane, and it earns our nod as the video of the day.We all knew it could be done, but watching the hack in action has a snake-charmer-like affect on us -- and the plane in the video.
