  • Humble Bundle milestones: $50M to charity, $100M to devs

Humble Bundle has raised more than $50 million for charity since launching its first sale in May 2010 – the Humble Indie Bundle, as it was called back then. That bundle introduced the idea of "pay what you want" pricing and offered customers power over the allocation of their payments, plus the chance to do something good for charity. Specifically for that first promotion, it was the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Child's Play Charity. "When my co-founder Jeff [Rosen] first contacted the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Child's Play for our first promotion, no one knew who we were," Humble co-founder John Graham tells Joystiq. "After pitching the confusing idea, in probably too much detail, he was cut off: 'So let me get this straight, you are basically asking if you can give us money? Sure!'" Humble Bundle now supports a roster of more than 50 charitable organizations and has expanded with weekly bundles, ebook bundles, mobile bundles and the Humble Store, which by itself raised $1 million for charity by June 2014. That very first Humble Bundle raised roughly $400,000 for charity – $200,000 each for EFF and Child's Play – at the time an "incomprehensible" amount to John Graham. "It produced a lot of pressure to keep going," he says. "Our potential to raise another $400,000 for charity felt like a moral obligation. Raising more than two orders of magnitude beyond that goal was not something we ever considered."

  • Monaco tops 750K sold, makes off with $215K in Humble Bundle 11

Sales of the neon stealth game Monaco have hit 750,000 following its inclusion in Humble Indie Bundle 11. During the bundle bonanza, Monaco earned approximately $215,000, developer Andy Schatz writes in a rundown on his blog. "That's a nice hefty sum," he adds. Monaco was one of the "beat the average" games, meaning customers had to pay more than roughly $4.70 to get it. The entire bundle earned $2.3 million from 494,000 units, and of those, 370,000 were "beat the average" purchases that included Monaco. Most customers chose to distribute their payment with the default settings of 65 percent to developers, 20 percent to charity and 15 to Humble, and with six developers plus three mid-week additions, Schatz walked with 8 percent of the total payments. During the Humble sale, Schatz tracked Monaco's Steam numbers to see if sales there would drop – and they didn't. "Despite the huge number of units that we sold in the Humble Bundle, it doesn't appear that our presence in the HIB affected our day-to-day Steam revenue," he writes. "Why is this? My guess is that customers tend to be loyal to sales channels." Schatz told Joystiq near the beginning of Humble Indie Bundle 11 that he'd never been disappointed with Monaco's sales, even though XBLA numbers fell below his expectations. "Prior to HIB11, we had sold about 375,000 units across all platforms, with XBLA accounting for about 10 percent of those," he said. "Part of the strength of our PC sales have been the huge free updates (of which we have planned one final one, which will wrap up the storyline of the Gentleman and his crew). No plans at the moment for a sequel; I'm actually just beginning work on our next title." [Image: Pocketwatch Games]

Double Fine's annual game jam, Amnesia Fortnight, is upon us once again. Over the next two weeks, small teams within Double Fine will conceptualize new games and create working prototypes that will, through the power of internet voting, be made into full-fledged games. This year's festivities include a special twist: Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward is participating as a special guest project leader. Ward will head up his own team and create a working prototype based on one of his four designs, as voted for by the fans. A list of Pendleton Ward's prototypes are available over on the Amnesia Fortnight Humble Bundle page. Mathematical! The pitch video above shows Double Fine is full of ideas - we kind of lost count after the eighth game idea - but there are individual pitch videos for each idea over on Double Fine's YouTube page. There are games about cats, space exploration, fantasy wars, karate troopers, turning Tim Schafer into a pocket monster, something about a ghost dog (not that Ghost Dog) and Bad Golf 2 Bad Golf 2 Bad Golf 2 Bad Golf 2. A documentary from 2 Player Productions will chronicle the whole event. You can head on over to the Humble Store page right now and contribute some cash for the right to vote on which prototypes move on. Doing so will grant immediate access to 2012's prototypes, which include Amnesia Fortnight 2012 winner Spacebase DF-9. [Image: Double Fine]

Wonderfully predictable Humble Bundle has added three new games to the Humble Bundle with Android 7: Anomaly Korea from 11-Bit Studios, Broken Sword: Director's Cut from Revolution Software and Organ Trail: Director's Cut from The Men Who Wear Many Hats. Plus, this round adds Europe DLC for Ticket to Ride, a game already included in the Humble Bundle. Get these newbies by paying more than the average price. Humble Bundle with Android 7 includes Incredipede, Anodyne, Greed Corp and Ticket to Ride (plus USA 1910 DLC) for whatever price you want, with Worms Reloaded and The Bard's Tale thrown in by paying more than the average. All games are available on PC, Mac, Linux and Android, and paying more than $1 grabs Steam keys as well. Whatever you decide to pay, it can all go to a good cause, or to the developers themselves, or to Humble Bundle.

Humble Bundle with Android 7 includes six games (for now) and their soundtracks, available on PC, Mac, Linux and Android: Incredipede, Anodyne, Greed Corp, Ticket to Ride plus USA 1910 DLC, Worms Reloaded and The Bard's Tale. The first four titles are available for whatever price you want, while Worms Reloaded and The Bard's Tale are unlocked by paying more than the average. This strategy also unlocks any games that are added before the bundle's time is up in two weeks – and yes, there will be more games. Grab Steam keys for each title by paying $1 or more. Customers can allocate whatever amount they decide to pay among the developers, Humble itself or charity. It's going well so far – Incredipede developer Colin Northway notes that in the Humble Bundle's first 15 minutes, sales surpassed Incredipede's launch day numbers, and in 20 minutes it sold more than the game's first day on Steam.

Limbo, Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken, Bastion and A Virus Named Tom are now available to would-be purchasers and those who've already coughed up dough for the collection alike. This latest Humble Bundle launched just last week and is headlined by FTL, Fez and Mark of the Ninja, in addition to Brutal Legend, Trine 2: Complete Story and a special beta version of Eets: Munchies. This latest grouping of games has little over six days left on its run, at which point it'll be retired for the next insanely tempting Humble Indie Bundle collection.

The Humble Bundle is easily the best deal available on the internet when it comes to pay-what-you-want entertainment. It works on a sliding scale of price / morality. You pay whatever you want for a block of games / movies / comedy albums / e-books etc, from zero dollars on. Buyers who pay more than the average get bonus content. It's truly a wonderful idea. Currently, the deal being offered is the Humble Indie Bundle 9, a set of four incredible games for your standard customers with two extra games for people who pay more than US$4.59. That's right -- six full games for less than a dollar apiece. More importantly, this particular bundle marks the Mac debut of two of these titles. The basic package comes with Trine 2: Complete Story, Mark of the Ninja (for the first time on Mac), Eets Munchies Beta and the Jack Black-starring heavy metal role-playing game Brütal Legend. If you pay more than the standard amount you also get FTL: Faster Than Light and the legendary 2D platformer in a 3D world, Fez. You can watch the bundle's trailer below. Head over to the Humble Bundle website now and get stocked up on games.

    08.06.2013

The Humble Deep Silver Bundle recruits Metro 2033, Sacred Citadel and Risen today. These new additions are free for anyone who's already purchased the bundle, while new customers must pay over the average price (currently just shy of $5) for the trio. Calling the Humble Deep Silver bundle successful is perhaps an understatement: It has sold over 340,000 bundles and earned in excess of $1.6 million since its introduction last week. The pay-what-you-want lineup consists of Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition, Saints Row 2, Sacred 2: Gold Edition, Risen 2: Dark Waters and Saints Row: The Third and all its Full Package DLC. Paying more than $25 also secures a copy of Dead Island: Riptide. The Humble Deep Silver Bundle has little less than a week to go before closing its virtual doors. It's also worth noting that these games are provided as Steam codes, so you'll need Valve's digital distribution platform to run them.

Humble Indie Bundle 8 is already a screaming deal, and it now has four more games and their soundtracks to tickle your fancy (and vocal chords): Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers, Intrusion 2, English Country Tune and Oil Rush. These join the "pay more than the average" tier, alongside Hotline Miami and Proteus. Whatever that price is will also get you the "pay what you want" games, Thomas Was Alone, Awesomenauts, Little Inferno, Dear Esther, and Capsized. All games and soundtracks would now cost $150 at retail, but the bundle price is up to you – though only for seven more days.

The Humble Indie Bundle is one of the higher-quality game bundles around (there are quite a few of them these days), and the eighth iteration, just announced this week, is one of the best deals we've seen in a while. The bundle features seven different games (all available on the Mac, along with Windows and Linux versions if you happen to OS that way) for a name-your-own price. You'll get Little Inferno (which began on iOS, but later arrived on PC), the excellent indie MOBA Awesomenauts, Capsized, heart-tugger Thomas Was Alone and the very atmospheric Dear Esther, along with two other titles if you pay higher than the average (currently about $5), the beautiful Proteus and the violent but very well-designed Hotline Miami. All of those games are excellent, and the fact that you can pay your own price (which you can then divvy up as you like to charity, the Humble Bundle folks or the developers) is just icing on the already sweet cake. And there's more, too: You get soundtracks for all of the games, not to mention that all of these titles are cross-platform and DRM free, so you can play them anywhere you want, too. This bundle will be available for a while, but it's definitely a great deal. If you need a few more games to play on your Mac, pick this one up for sure.
