  • Humble Bundle milestones: $50M to charity, $100M to devs

Humble Bundle has raised more than $50 million for charity since launching its first sale in May 2010 – the Humble Indie Bundle, as it was called back then. That bundle introduced the idea of "pay what you want" pricing and offered customers power over the allocation of their payments, plus the chance to do something good for charity. Specifically for that first promotion, it was the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Child's Play Charity. "When my co-founder Jeff [Rosen] first contacted the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Child's Play for our first promotion, no one knew who we were," Humble co-founder John Graham tells Joystiq. "After pitching the confusing idea, in probably too much detail, he was cut off: 'So let me get this straight, you are basically asking if you can give us money? Sure!'" Humble Bundle now supports a roster of more than 50 charitable organizations and has expanded with weekly bundles, ebook bundles, mobile bundles and the Humble Store, which by itself raised $1 million for charity by June 2014. That very first Humble Bundle raised roughly $400,000 for charity – $200,000 each for EFF and Child's Play – at the time an "incomprehensible" amount to John Graham. "It produced a lot of pressure to keep going," he says. "Our potential to raise another $400,000 for charity felt like a moral obligation. Raising more than two orders of magnitude beyond that goal was not something we ever considered."

  • Sunless Sea update goes 'steel' with major combat changes

Sunless Sea's "Steel" update is now live for all players, and brings a major change to the game's combat. The roguelike seafaring RPG previously featured turn-based combat, deemed "tiresome" in our time with the Early Access game in July. As demonstrated in a video provided by Failbetter Games after the break, the Steel update brings combat out of the game's menus and into the same top-down overworld in which players pilot their ship. The new real-time combat system still relies on players charging weapons and keeping enemies within range, though the latter is now represented by a red arc that circles their ship. Failbetter also "made some changes to the way the map is laid out in terms of balance and variety" and recommends that players start the game over with a new captain and chart to get the most out of the Steel update. The update entered a beta phase late last month. Sunless Sea is available through Steam Early Access and DRM-free on the developer's site for $18.99. [Image: Failbetter Games]

Life as a roguelike protagonist must be bleak - being born into adulthood without experiencing birthday parties, fighting increasingly brutal waves of enemies until their lone-warrior efforts are finally stomped out of existence ... it can't really be fulfilling. Maybe you can spare your Hero from the same fleeting fate in Vertical Drop Heroes HD, a randomly-generated roguelike due for PC and Mac on May 20. Players will have 20 traits, 15 abilities and powers and 16 weapons to arm Heroes with, but anyone overwhelmed by Vertical Drop Heroes' mounting challenge can rope in a teammate via split screen or network-based co-op. What are you fighting for beyond a few more minutes of life for your Hero? The related press release teases the "truth behind the game," which conveniently lays beyond conquering the final boss. Vertical Drop Heroes will cost $5 when it arrives on Good Old Games, Humble Store and Green Man Gaming. It's also currently up for vote on Steam Greenlight. [Image: Nerdook Productions]

Ne'er has a Goat faced an adventure so demanding, so puzzling, and of such extraordinary magnitude since... well, the first Escape Goat. MagicalTimeBean's Escape Goat 2 is the sequel to the 2011 puzzle-platformer, and it's breaking for freedom today on Windows PC, Mac and Linux via Steam, GOG and the Humble Store, priced at $10. Escape Goat 2 follows the formula of the first game: Our purple caprine hero has to make his way through rooms filled with environmental perils, lots of moving parts, and puzzles that require the help of his magical mouse companion. However, the sequel ups the ante with a graphical overhaul, a new, more interconnected map system, and just to ram it home, there are 100-plus rooms compared to the original's 50 or so. • Explore and create music in the Tron-like world of Fract, out next month

    03.12.2014

Synaestheisa is a condition in which you experience one sense like sound through another pathway like sight, and it's a growing concept in video games, particularly through the art of visualizing music. More recent indie games like Audiosurf and Sound Shapes carry on the groundwork laid by Dreamcast/PS2 classic Rez, while larger projects like Harmonix's newly unveiled Chroma show there's plenty left to explore for synaesthesia and gaming. Exploring music is exactly what you do in Fract, the Indie Fund-backed and IGF Best Student Game winner that's coming to Steam, GOG and the Humble Store next month. Developed by Montreal-based three-man team Phosfiend Systems, Fract is based around a psychedelic, boldly colored world - inspired by the movie Tron - that is in essence one big synthesizer. Players can create and manipulate music and sound by exploring the world and solving the puzzles they find there, You can even save and export the music you create in Fract, so brace yourself for some amazing Joystiq jams when the game hits Windows PC and Mac in April, priced at $15. Stop-motion adventure game Dominique Pamplemousse is now available on Steam. The PC and Mac game is 15 percent off ($4.24), and the Deluxe Edition version is 17 percent off ($4.97) until March 18. Dominique Pamplemousse also launched on the Humble Store today, and is priced at $4.99. The indie adventure game's Deluxe Edition includes soundtrack and sheet music DLC, which is also half-off ($0.99) this week. Developer Deirdra Kiai confirmed the DLC's inclusion in the Deluxe Edition via Twitter, but warned that multiple reports indicate that some currencies "make it more money than separately." The developer also added the sheet music extras for Humble Store purchases. Dominique Pamplemousse is described as an "animated detective adventure game about gender and the economy," and is also dubbed a "musical" by Kiai, complete with singing characters. One of the characters, protagonist and private investigator Dominique Pamplemousse, is asked to find a missing pop star by a CEO of a record company and winds up framed for a crime. The claymation-style game launched on PC, Mac and iPad when Joystiq spoke with Kiai about the game at E3 last June. [Image: Deirdra Kiai]
