It's hard to believe, but TUAW TV Live has been appearing on your screens just about every Wednesday for 10 months now. I want to thank all of you who have joined in every week for an hour of discovery and discussion; you've made it a pleasure to produce the show. This week, I'll be talking about a variety of topics: what would be good to see in iWork and iLife updates, iPad and iPhone apps (both good and bad), more iPad and iPhone cases, a demo of how to quickly make an e-book that will work in iBooks, and additional topics as well. And we'll even have some fun giveaways on today's show. To watch and participate in today's show, just come back to TUAW at about 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT), and I'll have full instructions on how to view the livestream and use the chat.

  • YouTube starts up live streaming trial, could turn into LiveTube if all goes well

Sure, we've all seen sprinklings of live content on YouTube, but now Google's video arm is finally threatening to really flex that content streaming muscle. Today and tomorrow, chosen partners will participate in a trial of a new live streaming platform, and so long as the traffic doesn't burn down too many server farms, the feature should be progressively rolled out to a wider audience in the near future. Alas, it sounds like Google intends to limit the capability to content partners only and not allow its masses of regular users the pleasure of livestreaming their cats' latest acts of mischief out to the world. Oh, such a shame.

    09.10.2010

Hey everyone, it's your favorite day -- Friday! The weekend is fast approaching, so let's kick it off by checking out a brand-new game! This week's topic of the livestream is LOVE, the single-man MMO created by Eskil Steenberg. LOVE is a surreal fantasy where players fortify their settlements against waves of hostile computer-controlled tribes. However, LOVE doesn't stop the players at creating just fortifications alone! Players can terraform the environment, lay down power lines to defensive weaponry, construct buildings, and more! So please, hit the play button above to watch the livestream narrated by Seraphina Brennan, or double-click the video to be taken to our Livestream page, where you can chat with other Massively users in real time, talk with Sera, and learn more about LOVE or the MMO industry at large! Update: Thanks everyone for coming! The stream may be over, but you can catch a re-run of it by pressing the play button above! Enjoy!

  • TUAW TV Live mystery episode today at 5 PM EDT

Mystery episode, you say? What could that mean? Usually it means that your host can't think of much to talk about, but today I'll probably have iOS 4.1 feature discussion and demos, an original Apple TV tear-apart (literally), and that's just the beginning. I'm thinking a few app demos might be in order as well, provided that the super-secret spy cam decides to cooperate. I'll also be showing off some iPhone 4 products from Exogear, including their new Exolife rechargeable battery case. My weekly hour-long video livestream starts, as usual, at 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT) right here at TUAW.com. Drop by a few minutes before the show begins to get yourself acquainted with the livestream and chat tools (if you're not a regular viewer), or to start chatting with the others about whatever topic comes to mind. It's fun, it's fast, and it's live -- see you at 5 PM.

  • 2K Games to stream 'something big' from PAX tomorrow morning

    09.02.2010

Oh boy -- yes, this certainly seems like an announcement for an announcement, and you know how much we love those (not at all). But 2K Games' blog has posted that "something big is going to happen at the 2K Games booth" this weekend for PAX 2010, and it's got everyone riled up. If nothing else, just consider this a PSA that there will be a live stream starting tomorrow morning at 10AM PDT, in which we'll supposedly see "something big." An elephant? An Ubisoft Toronto game? Tom Hanks after a wish? If it helps (it doesn't), Duke Nukem co-creator George Broussard has tweeted a link to a picture of pigs flying, which some folks have taken to mean that Duke Nukem For.. -- oh, never mind, we can't even bring ourselves to say its name. Let's just all wait patiently until the live stream starts tomorrow, and then we won't be disappointed when 2K announces that it has convinced President Christoph Hartmann to attend PAX in a silly gorilla suit.

  • Did you catch that? Event livestream is Mac and iOS only

Most of you noticed something a bit... oddly specific about Apple's streaming announcement for the 9/1 event: Apple® will broadcast its September 1 event online using Apple's industry-leading HTTP Live Streaming, which is based on open standards. Viewing requires either a Mac® running Safari® on Mac OS® X version 10.6 Snow Leopard®, an iPhone® or iPod touch® running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad™. The live broadcast will begin at 10:00 a.m. PDT on September 1, 2010 at www.apple.com. What's missing from this picture? About nine-tenths of the Internet; specifically, anyone using a Windows PC. As pointed out on ReadWriteWeb, there is no QuickTime X for Windows yet and no client supporting HTTP Live Streaming. I'm not sure why RWW's Adrianne Jeffries is convinced that it's up to Microsoft to implement QuickTime X (hint: it's not), but Apple's engineering team is still working to flesh out the new QuickTime stack on the Mac -- no surprise that the Windows version is lagging behind. Yes, HTTP live streaming is an open standard, but that doesn't help much without a working implementation (as Adobe's John Nack is pointing out). Having a fallback stream of plain old RTSP wouldn't just be a nice gesture for the rest of the world -- it'd also be welcomed by the millions of PowerPC Mac users who won't be able to watch the stream, either. Yep, that requirement specifies Safari on Mac OS X 10.6 -- no Intel, no joy. Of course, even if you can't tune in for the video goodness, you can still come here for our lively and informative liveblog. Update: MacRumors points to this test stream and also suggests that VLC may be able to watch the stream, at least in fits and starts.

  • Apple to livestream its fall event

Hey, do you hate reading? Well, finally Apple is feeling your pain. Tomorrow at 10AM PT, Apple will stream its fall event directly to your Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod as it unfolds. Of course, if you're a Windows user or you're wielding some kind of satanic Android device, you'll be out of luck apparently. Unless we're misreading this line: "Viewing requires either a Mac running Safari on Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard, an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad." At any rate, you can tune to the livestream at apple.com, or if you really care about an untainted and supremely intelligent take on the proceedings, you'll follow along with our liveblog right here.

  • Rise and Shiny recap: Zentia

    08.08.2010

Each week Rise and Shiny asks you to download and try a different free-to-play, indie or unusual game, chosen by me, Beau Hindman. Some of the games will be far out of your gaming comfort zone, and some will pleasantly surprise you. We will meet each Tuesday and Friday night at 9 p.m. EDT (8 p.m. CDT), followed by this column the Sunday after. I welcome any suggestions for games, either in the comments or at beau@massively.com or Twitter me @Beau_Hindman. It's hard for a game to strike a perfect balance of fun and challenge. In fact, I'd say it's the result of otherworldly forces as much as it is the hard work of the developer. Many of the greatest games I have ever played are a conglomerate of many factors that were beyond the control of the artists, writers and producers who first crafted the world. Sometimes, the crew must simply hope that its ship floats, and that it happens to set her to sail just as the weather is perfect. Then a game like ChangYou's Zentia comes along, a game that has all the wonderful qualities I am looking for -- as the result of some very smart, specific design choices made by some very creative people. Sure, I discovered the game on accident (I wasn't actively looking for a game the day Zentia fell into my lap), but the game has obviously been crafted with precision and care. If you'd like to read up on some of the details of the game, you can check out our E3 coverage here, or read an article of mine here. Also, you can get your closed beta key here. Otherwise, see me after the break, and be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments section!

It's finally feeling like summer here at the TUAW TV Live studios in Colorado, although it's technically still spring. That means it's time for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere to start thinking about summer vacations. In addition to some of the talk about what's transpired this week at WWDC 2010, your host Steve Sande and a possible guest host are also going to talk about some apps for business and summer travel. To join in from your Mac or PC, just go to the next page by clicking the link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a live stream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to join in on the fun by asking questions or making comments. If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application. This has been quite the week in the world of Apple: the new iPhone 4 was announced, the iPhone / iPad / iPod touch operating system gained a new name, Safari 5 hit Software Update, and thousands of Mac and iOS developers are building their knowledge for the future at WWDC 2010 in San Francisco. Hmmm. Sounds like a topic or two for TUAW TV Live! Join me and a possible guest for an hour of talk about iPhone 4 lust, some demos of several apps, and even a short tutorial on how to use Apple's iPad Camera Connection Kit to move both photos and video into your iPad. All the fun starts at 5 PM EDT today, and all you need to do is drop by TUAW just before that time. The streaming video will be ready to roll, the chat will start up, and you can start basking in the glow of intense geekdom.

Welcome back to another hour of TUAW TV Live, our weekly live streaming video show. Our special guest fell through for today, so it's just Steve and his magic cameras bringing you the show. That's OK, because we have plenty to talk about (can anyone say "AT&T Data Plans?") For those of you who have (or want) iPads, Steve is going to be demonstrating a handful of new (and some not-so-new) apps. This will all be done using an IPEVO Point 2 View camera, live and uncut. We'll also be looking at some interesting iPhone apps using the same technique. We've had a few viewers who wonder about the time at which this show is presented, so we'd like to ask you to take a quick poll today, even if you're not watching TUAW TV Live. Let us know if moving the show a few hours in either direction improves your chances of watching the show. %Poll-47390% And now, on to the show! To join in from your Mac or PC, just go to the next page by clicking the link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a live stream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to join in on the fun by asking questions or making comments. It might not look like much at the moment, but as we type this BP is sending its vicious saw-wielding robots down to the site of the oil spill in its latest attempt to scuttle the leak -- and CBS is livestreaming the whole affair! Hit the source link to see it for yourself. Update: Looks like CBS switched programming to re-runs of Becker or something. We've updated the source link.

  • Frustrated by no universal video out for iPad? IPEVO P2V can help

    by

    05.27.2010

One of the things that was a bit frustrating for me after purchasing the iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter was finding out that it doesn't work with every iPad app. It works great with apps that are written to take advantage of the adapter, but at the present time there are only a handful of apps that will pump video out to your projector or monitor. So what if you want to teach an iPad class and show your students everything that's going on your iPad? If you have a camcorder pointing at the screen, you can even demonstrate to people how you do certain things with the iPad. There's a less expensive and pretty cool little camera that seems like it was designed just for doing iPad demos. The IPEVO Point 2 View (P2V) USB camera is inexpensive (about US$70), has remarkably good resolution, and comes with a stand that is perfect for doing demos. Read along for a quick review of this sweet little tool for putting your iPad (or iPhone) on the big screen.

If you're looking to be even more depressed than usual today, you should hit up PBS Newshour's YouTube channel, where they are currently livestreaming the oil spill. That's right, you can see with your own eyes the truly stunning spew of crude happening in the ocean right now, along with BP's "efforts" to clean it up. When we checked in it was pretty quiet on the cleanup effort front, but you know, BP execs have to spend the first 21 hours of each business day counting money. Either way, we'll just have to wait and see if this so-called "Top Kill" is working out or not. PBS is also asking for reader suggestions on how to plug up the hole that's leaking all the oil, so get on over there if you have any good ideas today. Embedded stream follows.

Time flies when you're having fun, and would you believe that today's episode of TUAW TV Live marks the 20th time that this regularly scheduled show has been on the air? That doesn't include the livestreaming that was done on iPad launch day. We have a growing archive of videos that are available for your viewing pleasure at http://www.ustream.tv/tuaw. Today we'll be discussing apps for the iPhone (or iPod touch) and iPad, with some fun videos to view. • Cerevo Cam live! packs on-board USTREAM support

    by

    05.19.2010

Japan's Cerevo already has a fairly unique product on its hands with the 3G-enabled Cerevo Cam, but it looks like it's now managed to pull one more trick out of its hat: built-in support for USTREAM live streaming. That comes in the form of the Cerevo Cam live!, which is otherwise identical to the company's previous Cerevo Cam (it'll get USTREAM support in a firmware update), and is available with an optional USTREAM kit that includes a wide-angle conversion lens, a mini tripod, and a 4GB microSD card. As for the camera itself, while livestreaming is limited to 352 x 288, you'll of course still be able to capture video up to 720p resolution and snap 9-megapixel still images, and you'll be able to upload video directly from the camera over WiFi in addition to 3G. Still no indication of a release over here, but it looks like this one's already available in Japan for a downright reasonable ¥19,999 (or about $216). Update: As our pals from Engadget Japanese have pointed out, the camera requires a USB modem for 3G connectivity, which unfortunately can't be used for streaming video.

This appears to be the week for iPad love, since we have tons of video clips to show you (and talk about). Games, development tools, and politicians with iPads are all covered. Your host Steve Sande is joining you today at 5 PM EDT live from his new studio! Well, there's not really a new studio, but he'll be facing a new direction so it looks new. And he's got a fancy schmancy new iMac, so the video rendering should be incredible, if not utterly fantastic. To join in from your Mac or PC, just go to the next page by clicking the link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a live stream viewer and a chat tool.
