TUAW TV Live: The Unofficial Apple Trivia episode (Updated)
Today on TUAW TV Live, I'll be running a bit of a trivia contest -- or at least testing your abilities at performing internet searches. It's sure to be a fun and educational episode for anyone who loves Apple. Below, you'll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments. If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream App. It's a universal app and is wonderful on an iPad, both for viewing and participating in the chat. We'll start at about 5 PM ET, so if you're seeing a prerecorded show, be sure to refresh your browser until you see the live stream. TUAW TV Live: Get your TV on this afternoon at 5 PM EDT
If the summertime heat is still getting you down wherever you may live, grab a cold frosty one this afternoon at 5 PM EDT, crank up the air conditioning, and tune into TUAW TV Live. This afternoon's show will feature some hands-on reviews of several new pieces of Apple-related hardware -- everything from a novel water-resistant iPad case and sleek Bluetooth headphones to an iOS-controlled helicopter. As always, there are some fun software demos to watch as well, and the interplay between the chat room and the moron in front of the camera (me) is always fun. As usual, I'll be starting the show at 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT / 10 PM BST) sharp, and we'll take a few minutes to chat before the demos start. Though you and my normal band of enablers are welcome to come quest at the same time, I will be in my own group in the hopes that any "collect 10 Yeti bellybuttons" quests will go a bit more quickly. Since I stop to read the quests out loud, fall into crevices, get lost when I have no one to follow, etc., questers beginning when I do should be way ahead of me by the time I actually make it to the quest area. Today's TUAW TV Live features a guest whose new book, "Always On: How the iPhone Unlocked the Anything-Anytime-Anywhere Future--and Locked Us In" is garnering praise for its unblinking look at the good and bad aspects of the iPhone phenomena. Brian X. Chen is the interim editor of Wired.com's Gadget Lab and was formerly an editor at Macworld, and he'll be joining me for a discussion of the book and of the device that launched our always-connected digital future. The book is a fascinating and fast read, and loaded with anecdotes about how the ability to have hundreds of specialized apps can help our lives. It's also a cautionary tale filled with discussion of how Apple's vertical integration in the iPhone ecosystem has made the company wildly successful, but at a cost to consumers and developers alike. As usual, I'll be starting the show at 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT / 10 PM BST) sharp, and we'll take a few minutes to chat before the fun starts. TUAW TV Live at 5 PM ET: Dissecting the future of Mac OS
Mac OS X is now over 10 years old, and we're already beginning to see signs that Apple might merge the desktop operating system with the fledgling mobile OS -- iOS. We'll see some evolutionary changes in Mac OS X later this year when version 10.7 "Lion" hits the Mac App Store, but there are a growing number of people who think that Apple needs to make a revolutionary leap to a new computing paradigm. Today on TUAW TV Live, we're not going to try to design a future operating system, but one of the topics will be a discussion of things you'd like to see Apple take on in the near future. If there's an area in the Mac operating system that you think could use a major improvement, let me know before the start of the show by tweeting me at @stevensande. As usual, I'll have some fun demonstrations of new or revised apps, and you can expect to see some new goodies that have arrived here from some of the top Apple accessory manufacturers.
