  • Xfinity TV for iPad now streaming VOD for 'select networks' including HBO and Showtime (update: hands-on)

"A few weeks"? "Later this year"? Don't worry about Comcast's recent meddling with the fine print, Xfinity TV's latest update for the iPad allows you to "play movies and TV shows anywhere and anytime on your iPad using a Wi-Fi Internet connection." The deal is for select networks (aka not everyone's on board to start) including HBO, Starz, Showtime, and Cinemax. Version 1.1.1 is now available; we're downloading now and will let ya know exactly what we find. Update: We've taken it for a brief spin, and it looks like only ten networks are currently available, but there's still a hefty selection of content to choose from: BBC America, Cartoon Network, Cinemax, Starz Encore, HBO, MoviePlex, Showtime, Starz, TBS, and TNT. All are VOD only at the moment, but we hope that live streaming could theoretically be around the corner. Video starts streaming pretty quickly, and while quality probably won't be as good as your 1080p TV, it more than suffices for the iPad's 10-inch screen -- especially the HD stuff. Check it out in the gallery below! %Gallery-115530%

  • Comcast, Time Warner deal ensures TNT, TBS shows for VOD & live streaming

    by

    02.01.2011

Comcast announced live streaming to its iPad and (upcoming) Android Xfinity TV apps was not far off last month, and now it's announced a new long term deal with Time Warner that brings more content to all of its TV Everywhere-related efforts. That means shows from TNT, TBS, CNN, HLN, truTV, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim on Xfinity TV.com, cable VOD and mobile apps and the addition of live streaming video later this year as part of a larger agreement between Time Warner and Comcast. The keen eyed will notice that window of "a few weeks" for the debut of live streaming to iPads has expanded to simply "later this year," let's hope this doesn't slip while the company focuses on other balls in the air like its purchase of NBC, a potential new set-top box interface and apps for Smart TVs.

You've chosen to continue the live adventures of Roblinator, the goblin shamanator. I'm rather surprised, actually, because I thought a more advanced player would be chosen. I've never taken a shaman past level 11, so I'm going to need your help. Please join me on the stream above, the chat room after the break and/or in game on Zangarmarsh. Polls for Roblinator's future are after the break, as well. Update: The stream is now over. You may watch the video replay by clicking on the image above.

I'm playing Roblinator the goblin shamanator today, according to your whim. Join us in the chat room after the break to tell me what to do. You can also join my adventures by logging onto Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H) -- but you have to be a goblin on Lost Isles while I'm playing Roblinator, because she's only level 5. You're not stuck with this character, however. This is Choose My Adventure, after all, and you get to choose who to boss around. So after the break, there are also polls. ... But you're not even stuck with the polls to voice your opinion. Oh, no. If you want other things up for a vote, other activities to see, other choices to make, then tell me all about it in the comments. Update: The stream is now over. If you would like to watch the video replay, please click on the above image.

    12.22.2010

Today's TUAW TV Live marks two special events -- the upcoming Christmas holiday and the first anniversary of the show. Yes, believe it or not, TUAW TV Live has been on the air almost every Wednesday afternoon since December 23, 2009, with commentary, demos, live reviews and the occasional guest. Today's show will feature more of the same, with some live and recorded demonstrations of new software and accessories for your favorite Apple products. And of course we'll have a lot of the regulars visiting and hanging out in the chat room. To join in on the fun and usually educational show, come on back to TUAW just before 5 PM ET (2 PM PT, 10 PM GMT) and you'll find a post containing the live streaming video, the chat room, and instructions on how to join in if you're on an iPhone or iPad.

  • TUAW TV Live at 5 PM ET -- EyeTV HD, one week with a MacBook Air, and more

    by
    Steve Sande
    Steve Sande
    12.15.2010

Whenever I need to think of a topic for TUAW TV Live, I just look around my cluttered (or is it messy?) office, and I usually find inspiration. Today's inspiration comes from a device that should have been reviewed long ago -- Elgato's EyeTV HD (US$199.95), a Mac-based DVR / Tuner that works with satellite and cable HD boxes. I'll have a full review of the EyeTV HD in the next few days, but viewers will get to see this device in action this afternoon. I've also had the 11" MacBook Air for a week now, and I'll fill you in on the details as part of the show. The action all starts at 5 PM ET (2 PM PT) here at TUAW.com. If you've never watched the show before, it combines live streaming video, taped segments and an interactive user chat for a fun-filled hour of rampant Apple fanboyism. For complete instructions on how to watch the stream and join the chat, come back to TUAW a few minutes before 5 PM ET. See you then!

  • Italian Apple PR: Apple to live stream today's event [Updated]

    10.20.2010

With only hours to spare, it seems that Apple has announced its intentions to live stream today's press event -- at least it's been announced to Italian customers. According to Italian site setteB.IT, Apple has issued a media alert stating their intention to live stream today's big announcements. Macstories has posted the full text of the press release, which states (Italian-to-English translation from Babelfsh): "Apple® will transmit to online own event of 20 October using the Live Streaming HTTP of Apple to the vanguard in the field. The vision demands or a Mac® with Safari® on Mac OS® X version 10,6 Snow Leopard®, or iPhone® or a iPod touch® with iOS 3,0 or successive version, or a iPad™. The broadcast live it will begin to the 10:00 a.m. 20 PDT of October, 2010 on www.apple.com." As of this writing, there is no official announcement on Apple.com*or its Italian PR page, so keep that in mind while reading this post. It's exciting, but we'd prefer to hear it from the domestic horse's mouth. If it does indeed happen, it will be only the 2nd live stream from Apple to require QuickTime X (the Apple TV announcement was the first). *Update: Apple has posted an announcement.

I'm impatient. I'll probably put it up for a live vote. Join me after the break while I narrate, read quests and take requests from the chat room. The show will run for at least an hour and be viewable on video, if you weren't able to watch it live. • YouTube starts up live streaming trial, could turn into LiveTube if all goes well

    by

    09.13.2010

Sure, we've all seen sprinklings of live content on YouTube, but now Google's video arm is finally threatening to really flex that content streaming muscle. Today and tomorrow, chosen partners will participate in a trial of a new live streaming platform, and so long as the traffic doesn't burn down too many server farms, the feature should be progressively rolled out to a wider audience in the near future. Alas, it sounds like Google intends to limit the capability to content partners only and not allow its masses of regular users the pleasure of livestreaming their cats' latest acts of mischief out to the world. Oh, such a shame.

  • Sony's LocationPorter real-time video transmission system goes multichannel

    by
    Ben Bowers
    Ben Bowers
    08.29.2010

Back in February of 2009, the launch of Sony's LocationPorter RVT-SD100 suggest that the days of needing a tricked out news van to transmit real-time on the scene video could be a thing of the past -- that is, if you had a spare $18k lying around and a solid 3G data connection. The newly-announced RVT-SD200 and its companion RVT-MR200 expands upon that dream by enabling up to 12 LocationPorters to transmit images to one single receiver. Besides paving the way for armies of techno box-toting reporters -- like the one pictured above -- to relay news as it happens, Sony also sees the potential for emergency services like police forces and fire departments to make use of the equipment to relay critical information. We could see that too, but if this new system is priced at anything like the old, we're betting tight public budgets won't make it happen. Then again we can't speak for the Sultan of Brunei's security force.
