There's a chance you've seen a movie car or two if you've visited a convention, but the Petersen Automotive Museum's offering should be more... elaborate. It's opening a "Hollywood Dream Machines" exhibit that will showcase 40 vehicles from sci-fi games and movies. Some of them are practically expected, like the DeLorean from Back to the Future, Deckard's sedan from Blade Runner and a lightcycle from Tron: Legacy. Others, however, are harder-to-see items like the GM Ultralight from Demolition Man as well as Lexuses from Black Panther and Minority Report. And how many times are you going to see life-size recreations of a Warthog from Halo or a Sparrow from Destiny?

The City of Los Angeles is fighting for access to data from an unlikely source: scooters. City officials want to use location data from Uber-owned Jump's dockless scooters to inform public transit policies. But the company says that could lead to "an unprecedented level of surveillance," which the city could wield over companies and citizens, Politico reports.

According to tweets from people in the area and reports by local news station KTLA, the Los Angeles offices of Netflix have been locked down due to reports of a person with a deadly weapon in the area. KTLA is also taking shelter as its offices are on the same lot, and has reported on Twitter that police have taken a person into custody. The LA Times reports that the person detained was a former Netflix employee who called someone working there and said he had a gun, however police detained him off-site and he did not have a gun. As of 8:30 PM ET, they report the scene has been cleared and the lockdown lifted. In a statement to KTLA, Netflix said law enforcement "received a tip about a potential law enforcement incident. Police are conducting a sweep of the lot out of an abundance of caution. There is no immediate danger or threat to our employees."

Tesla had quite the week. Not only did the upstart carmaker get to show off its new semi and roadster, it also unveiled its multi-station Supercharger rest stop and managed to get itself onto the receiving end of a class-action lawsuit alleging pervasive racism throughout its ranks. Numbers, because how else will you know how many times this week your supervisors have greeted you with an n-bomb?

The West Coast is finally getting an earthquake early warning system

On September 19th, 1985, Mexico City was devastated by an 8.0 magnitude earthquake that killed as many as 30,000 people and leveled buildings across the city, including the 12-story Hospital Juárez, one of the oldest hospital institutions in Mexico. In response, the government set about creating the world's first earthquake warning system. One that, when an 8.1 tremblor set in on the city September 7th of this year, and a second 7.1 less than two weeks later, saved potentially tens of thousands of lives by giving them more than a minute's notice to head to safety. So why doesn't America have one along its Pacific coast as well? Turns out we almost do.

Pledge agreements aren't the only deals being inked ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's first official state visit to the US. A consortium led by China Railway Group has come to terms with America's XpressWest Enterprises LLC to jointly build and operate a high-speed rail link running between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The project has already cleared its environmental impact study, obtained all of the necessary DoT licensing and right-of-way approvals, and is ready to begin building as soon as next September. China Railway has already put up $100 million in initial capital. According to China Railway, the route will span 230 miles between Las Vegas and Los Angeles proper. XpressWest's website, however, claims the tracks will stop in Victorville, California, 85 miles outside of LA, and 55 miles closer to its destination.

  • Apple reportedly eying new flagship store location at LA's Broadway Trade Center

ifoAppleStore, which traditionally has a pretty solid track record when it comes to monitoring Apple's retail initiatives, reports that Apple might have its eye on a gargantuan new retail space for a flagship store in the Los Angeles area. The space in question is the Broadway Trade Center, a building which dates back to 1908. Even with 22 stores in the greater Los Angeles area, Apple's retail team has been on the search for the perfect flagship store location for years, and now they may have found it. Incredibly, a tipster says the company has signed a lease for "several hundred thousand square-feet" of space inside the historic Broadway Trade Center in the city's downtown, which lately has been blooming with redevelopments. The Downtown Examiner Web site says the leased space will constitute an Apple "campus" with offices, residential space and retail areas for both Apple and the newly-acquired Beats brand. Adding more credence to the report, an August post on the La.Curbed website relayed that the owners of the property were intent on preparing "a creative campus, which will be ready in about 24 months for a major tech tenant to move in." As far as tech tenants go, it doesn't get more major than Apple. During Apple's most recent earnings conference call, the company said it has plans to open up 25 new stores in 2015, with 18-19 of them slated to open outside the U.S.

  • Uber offering UberPlus in LA for 'balling on a budget'

In an appearance-obsessed city like Los Angeles, image, dahling, is everything. That's why you can't simply take a taxi between auditions, the juice bar and hanging out at your agent's office. Your ride should be stylish, but thrifty, since an UberBlack would empty your bank account in the better part of a week. That's why Uber is launching UberPlus, a service that slots in between Uber X and UberBlack and offers "balling on a budget." Rather than rolling up in a Prius, you'll have a pick of lower-level executive rides like a BMW 3 Series, C-Class Benz or an Audi A4. Even better, is that UberPlus' minimum fee is just $5, $3 less than UberBlack, which is good, since the only thing standing between you and moving back home is the residuals from that vitamin infomercial.

Couldn't get to E3, Gamescom or any of the PAX events? You could try making it up to yourself with a two-day event in Las Vegas, provided you dig all things PlayStation. From December 6 - 7, PlayStation Experience attendees will be able to "sit in on in-depth panels, meet the industry's best developers, score hands-on gameplay with tons of upcoming PlayStation games, collect free swag, and get a chance to purchase rare collectibles directly from their favorite game studios," according to the PlayStation Blog. Though the Blog will offer coverage for those unable to partake, it teases that participants will get an "exclusive first look" at what's waiting for us in 2015. A one-day PlayStation Experience pass will run for $50, with weekend-long access going for $90, but the PS Blog adds that fans will need to wait until October 20 for further details on how to attend. It also suggests bringing friends and family "if they are 18 and over," suggesting adult status is required to enter. [Image: Sony]
