There's a good reason for the prominence of helicopters in the latest Max Payne 3 trailer, and it's not just because "super rich people have choppers." Alright, well, that's part of the reason, but helicopters are apparently extra prevalent in Sao Paolo, Brazil -- the setting for at least part of Max Payne 3 -- and the devs at Rockstar discovered this while touring the city by air. As it turns out, since traffic is a huge problem in the Brazilian megacity, rich folks have taken to helicopters as a main means of travel. Oh, also, there are motorcycle gangs that take advantage of the traffic, making it extra dangerous. Sounds like a good excuse to become a helicopter pilot! Max will apparently be wrestling with the wealth disparity he discovers in Brazil -- a reality he feels uncomfortable with regardless of what continent he's on.And when those devs were looking for an authentic nightclub experience, they hobnobbed their way into exclusive nightclubs like the "rooftop lounge scene at the chic Hotel Unique," and pushed their way into parties along Avenue Morumbi. Per the trailer, we're gonna guess that the Rockstar devs didn't extend that same search for realism to allowing themselves to be kidnapped by one of Sao Paolo's many street gangs, but in the interest of their safety we're keen to let that one slide.Today's info dump is the second in an ongoing research series that the developer is publishing in the lead up to this May's launch of MP3. Rockstar offered Joystiq an early look at several comparison shots ahead of a worldwide premier later today on the company's own newswire website, which we've dropped into a perusable gallery just below.%Gallery-148054%

  • Max Payne 3 staying true to its roots, but will be uprooted for mobile

The Max Payne series, originally created by Alan Wake's Remedy Entertainment, follows a few traditions -- no driving, no brawling, and an emphasis on blazing noir-style gunplay. None of this is going to change in Max Payne 3, Rockstar said in this week's Asked & Answered session."As we've stated in the past, we're working very hard to ensure that we're being faithful and true to the heritage of Max Payne -- and the heart and soul of Max Payne gameplay has always been as a pure shooter," Rockstar said. Max will have melee opportunities in close-quarter combat, but otherwise Rockstar has "no intention of betraying that to introduce driving/racing or brawling elements."Rockstar also provided a brief update on its mobile installment of the original Max Payne, saying it should see an official launch in the next couple months, with a release date to be announced soon.Rockstar fields more questions about Remedy and Max Payne 3 on its Asked & Answered page.

  • Take-Two Q3 financials down year-over-year, still within predictions

Take-Two Interactive has released its financial figures for the third quarter of fiscal 2012, which ended on December 31, 2011. While "in line" with the publisher's predictions, results are down when compared year-over-year to the same period in fiscal 2011.During Q3 2012, Take-Two's net revenue of $236.3 million was $97.7 million less than its net revenue of $334.3 million in Q3 2011. Operational income for the period was $14.2 million, down $22.6 million from the same quarter last fiscal year. Take-Two attributes this disparity to the fact that fiscal 2011 benefitted from the launch of Red Dead Redemption and its Undead Nightmare DLC more so than fiscal 2012 was able to.When looking at the entirety of Take-Two's fiscal 2012 performance so far, the downward year-over-year trend continues with an overall net revenue of $677.7 million (compared to 2011's $954.6 million), and an operating loss of $76.2 million (compared to 2011's operating income of $76.2 million). The company has also adjusted its outlook on Q4 in response to moving Max Payne 3's release date into the first quarter of fiscal 2013. It now expects net revenue for the period ending on March 31, 2012 to land between $112 million and $162 million, with its prediction for all of 2012 adjusted accordingly to a range of $790 million to $840 million.

Perhaps some specific release dates will reassure you that Max Payne 3 won't be delayed again. Be soothed by these calendar entries, straight out of Take-Two's latest earnings report: Max will dive and shoot and dilate time on Xbox and PS3 on May 15.The PC version will follow on May 29, which we suppose constitutes a safe little mini-delay within the announcement. Max Payne 3 shows off his man-stopping "608 Bull" revolver in the latest trailer. Or, in Portuguese, since that seems to be the language of the people Max is shooting, it's the 608 Touro. We initially guessed "burro." But, no, that's "donkey" in Spanish. The "608 Donkey" sounds like an awesome gun ...

After pushing the Max Payne 3 launch from March to May, Rockstar has extended the pre-order period for the game's lavish special edition, originally scheduled to end on January 15. Thanks to the delay, prospective buyers now have until April 2 to decide whether or not to pull the trigger on the $100 package. It's sort of like activating bullet time -- instead of getting more time to steady your aim, you get more time to steady your mouse cursor over the "add to cart" button.

  • Max Payne 3 delayed until May, Take-Two to report a net loss for year

Max Payne 3 has entered bullet time, slowing the linear progression of events to the point where the game has shifted its own launch from March to May. This would be the second major title the publisher shifted out of March, with its XCOM shooter also moving into the next fiscal year, which begins April 1. The delay is expected to have Take-Two report a net loss for the fiscal year ending March 31. The company previously expected a billion in revenue, but is reducing that estimate by $210-230 million. That means for fiscal 2013 (ending March 31, 2013) Take-Two expects to launch: Max Payne 3, BioShock Infinite, Borderlands 2, Spec Ops: The Line, XCOM, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and "other titles yet to be announced." So, Take-Two expects us to only play Take-Two games over the next year. Understood.

  • Rockstar devs check out the black market in Sao Paulo for Max Payne 3 [update]

Max Payne 3 is set in the slums and high-rolling cities of São Paulo, Brazil. To truly get a feel for the land and its society, Rockstar developers and researchers traveled to the heart of the city to study its law-enforcement branches, its extensive weapons collection and to track down local casting, the Rockstar newswire reads. São Paulo has become infamous for its favelas, gang violence and illegal trafficking, perhaps because it's all set against such a lush, photogenic landscape. It appears the Rockstar team watched a few documentaries that take advantage of Brazil's dark beauty, as it's able to name-drop such titles as Favela Rising and Bus 174. So, we're sure the devs were completely prepared for the reality of São Paulo's slums. Update: As many of you pointed out, Favela Rising and Bus 174 are both set in Rio de Janiero, and Brazil is home to many non-violent, wonderful people and places. Rockstar is setting a scene that scare-based media and PBS has been harping on for years, probably because shooting people in an innocent, beautiful environment just doesn't feel right to the developers. Or they wanted a free trip to Brazil.

Good news: You could get shot if you win Rockstar's Max Payne 3 contest, which gives entrants the chance to appear in the game. Rockstar needs more face variants for its gang members in Max Payne 3's multiplayer component, and if you tweet using the #MaxPayne3 hashtag (from now through January 13th) your mug could make it in. You'll also need to follow @RockStarGames, and note that the company reserves the right to turn you down once you've been chosen for consideration -- sorry, Eric Stoltz. Also, Cher. (Actually, either one might make a good ruthless gang leader, now that we think about it. They both know a lot of bikers, after all.)

  • Max Payne 3 multiplayer to have 'Gang War' narrative, Bullet Time

The multiplayer component of Max Payne 3 is shaping up to be absolutely insane, provided the oodles of ambition outlined in this recent IGN preview is fully realized. The competitive branch of the game will focus on "Gang War" mode, an objective-based team mode which sees player's goals change dynamically based on the events of the previous round. For instance, the player with the most kills in the last round may have a bounty on their head in the following match, while a certain territory your team stole in the previous game will have to be fended off in future encounters. Players will customize their loadouts using Bursts -- usable perks which become more powerful the longer the player goes without using them. These include intriguing abilities like Paranoia, which makes the opposing team see their teammates as enemies, simultaneously enabling friendly fire. There's also the series' trademark Bullet Time, which works by slowing down foes caught in the user's line of sight. Check out IGN for more info about how Multi-Max's abilities break down.

\ If you're absolutely certain you'll want Max Payne 3 in a really bad way, and you're already financially and emotionally prepared to drop a Benjamin on it, has Rockstar got the deal for you! Between now and January 15, roughly two months before the game's March release window, you'll be able to order the Max Payne 3 Special Edition, "while supplies last." What will your $100 pre-buy you, besides the game itself? Ready? Here goes: A 10" tall Max Payne statue; "game-inspired Original Still Life Art Prints," for your art collection; a bullet-shaped keychain with screw-off back (for your drugs!); the obligatory multiplayer character pack, including Max Payne favorites like Mona Sax and Vladimir Lem; the similarly obligatory multiplayer weapons pack; and lastly, the game's original soundtrack. Curiously, this Special Edition really is special, in that it actually is limited ("while supplies last") and won't be available after release. If you want to wait, be warned that eBay scalpers are probably circling the waters already.%Gallery-139989%

Rockstar began a new Max Payne 3 video series today, covering the "design and technology" of the upcoming game. This first video seems to be an introduction to the concepts it'll get into in further videos, providing an overview of the animations, bullet time, AI, and cinematic techniques in the game. Even if you're not interested in the specifics of the presentation, Rockstar demonstrates all of these concepts with gameplay footage! In other words, you get to watch a lot of Max Payne 3. You get to watch a lot of gunfights.
