'Resident Evil 3' remake trailer shows more Nemesis

It didn't take long for Capcom to offer a closer look at its Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake. The developer has posted a trailer that explores the main characters of the survival horror title, most notably its namesake Nemesis. Even moreso than in the original version, Nemesis comes across as a nigh-on unstoppable freight train -- he's determined to hunt down "stars" like Jill Valentine, and he'll break through anything to get to them. You also get better looks at how Jill and her unexpected ally Carlos deal with the sheer chaos Umbrella's zombie infection has wrought upon the city.

Astronomers have long been puzzled by the fact that our sun doesn't have a companion star. After all, most similar stars are part of a binary, or even triplet, system. Now, scientists may have confirmed a long-held theory: The sun did once have a companion star that has been dubbed "Nemesis."

"Nemesis," the fourth and final DLC pack for Call of Duty: Ghosts, has come to Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles, bringing with it four new maps, four unique Field Orders and the final installment of Ghosts' episodic Extinction storyline, Episode 4: Exodus. If we were Jim Carrey trying to do a horror movie, we might think the number four was haunting us. The maps included for Ghosts players ready to send their enemies into the afterlife are: "Goldrush," an abandoned gold mine in the southwest United States; "Subzero," a military base nestled in the frozen wilderness of Canda that harbors a "mysterious terror," according to a press release; "Dynasty," a Chinese lakeshore village surrounded by mountains, gardens and awe-inspiring architecture; and "Showtime," a reimagined version of a map from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare called "Shipment." Meanwhile, those who'd prefer to shoot alien faces instead of humans will find a new enemy in Extinction mode's conclusion. The Ancestors, as they're called, are the most powerful extraterrestrial foes yet seen in Ghosts, with mind control powers and psionic attacks. Nemesis is now available for Xbox systems for $14.99 a la carte. Alternatively, you can purchase the $49.99 Season Pass to grab it and the three other DLC packs released thus far, saving you $10 from the amount it would cost to download each individually. Nemesis will be available on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 next month. [Image: Activision]

Nemesis also includes the final chapter in the co-op Extinction storyline, pitting players against a new alien breed equipped with psychic powers. Nemesis premieres on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One on August 5. Releases for the PlayStation 3, PS4, and PC platforms will follow in September. [Video: Activision]

  • Shadow of Mordor enemies less devious on Xbox 360, PS3

Monolith Productions is doing "whatever we can" to ensure feature parity between the Xbox 360, PS3 versions of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and the Xbox One, PS4 offerings. But the developer admits this may be an impossibility and reveals the game's core hook, the Nemesis system driving its procedurally-generated enemies, will likely lack some complexity on Xbox 360 and PS3 when the game launches this year. "To break it down, some of the stuff we're pretty confident will still be very similar on current gen: the core mechanics, like combat, stealth, ranged and movements; the basic control and gameplay, that should all be really solid," Monolith Design Director Michael De Plater told IGN. "What it won't have is the same level of depth and variety and simulation within the 'Nemesis system.'" De Plater added that the Nemesis system is "just so huge in terms of content, calculations and AI we'll just have to try and get as much of it in as we can." The Nemesis system is the mechanic driving Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's core gameplay loop. Protagonist Talion, on a mission of revenge, explores Mordor and isolates Orcs in order to extract information on Sauron's army. This information reveals not only Orc hierarchy, but also the vulnerabilities and strengths of individual Orc commanders, each of which are procedurally-generated by the game. We were able to go in-depth with Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system last month, though admittedly all we saw was the next-gen version running on a high-end PC. Monolith was unwilling to discuss the planned Xbox 360 and PS3 versions at the time. [Image: Warner Bros.]

Hi-Rez has introduced a new goddess to the world of SMITE. Nemesis, Goddess of Revenge, is a physical melee warrior who "unleashes her vengeance on all who oppose her." According to the lore, Nemesis is in charge of dishing out punishment to both humans and gods guilty of hubris; her method is summed up nicely by the phrase, "Let the punishment fit the crime." Nemesis's abilities center on her massive blade. Swift Vengeance allows for a quick dash and slash followed by a second dash and slash, Slice and Dice is an AOE attack that damages and slows targets, Retribution creates a shield around her that absorbs damage, and Divine Judgment reduces the health and movement speed of a target god while stealing some of his or her protections. Catch Nemesis in action after the break.

  • nEmesis system machine reads tweets, tells you which burrito joint to avoid

We all know that customer reviews can be prone to, shall we say, a little positive engineering. What if you could gather genuine opinions about a restaurant, or product before you commit your cash? Well, a new system developed at the University of Rochester might be able to offer just that. The "nEmesis" engine uses machine learning, and starts to listen when a user tweets from a geotagged location that matches a restaurant. It then follows the user's tweets for 72 hours, and captures any information about them feeling ill. While the system isn't able to determine that any resulting affliction is directly connected to their restaurant visit, results over a four-month period (a total of 3.8-million analysed tweets) in New York City found 480 reports of food poisoning. It's claimed these data match "fairly well" with that gathered by the local health department. The system's creators admit it's not the whole picture, but could be used alongside other datasets to spot potential problems more quickly. The only question is how long before we see "sabotage" tweets?

I'm back from a great trip to Northern California, during which I took the opportunity to drop in on Cryptic Studios and specifically the Star Trek Online team to see what they had up their sleeves following their success with the Legacy of Romulus expansion. While I was able to interview numerous people while I was there, so much new stuff is coming out that I just can't not go over it here. The new summer event on Risa has already begun, and a big new ship is making her debut in the game. I got a great close-up look at her and her sisters and the inside scoop of what she'll be capable of! So join me past the break as I investigate Star Trek Online's new predator of a ship: the Scimitar!

You and your group of roleplaying companions need something new to do. You've grown tired of sitting around talking about problems in the outside world or engaging in a non-stop soap opera drama wherein someone is always sleeping with someone else inappropriately. By complete coincidence, you and your companions all appear to be heavily armed and armored, leading to an excellent suggestion -- you should go out and get involved in a conflict! A fracas of some kind! What a concept! Sarcasm aside, long-running conflicts are a lot of fun when handled right. While I've talked about them in brief before, today I want to look at a handful of common conflict types and offer some tips about how to run them without tears. If you think drama can spill over into OOC channels when it's just a matter of pretend romances being spurned, you don't even want to know what happens when the knives come out.

City of Heroes has a lot going for it, but it doesn't offer an easy nemesis for your character. Which is kind of a problem in a superhero game, but also a problem in the sense that you always want a nemesis in a game. You want someone that's just plain bad, a villain whose motives you don't need to understand in great depth. Every so often, it's nice to just have an adversary. I think that was, at one point, the goal behind Nemesis. But the group has wound up in a very different and much less entertaining place. At a glance, Nemesis isn't really all that overused in City of Heroes. Sure, there's the vague implication that he's behind a lot of different schemes, but for the most part that's just window-dressing. Despite the fact that I should adore a group of steampunk criminals in modern-day Paragon City, I feel my hackles raise every time Nemesis shows up, because the group and the leader are both massively overdone.

  • Breakfast Topic: Who is your in-game nemesis?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider's pages. During a break from WoW this summer, I took some time to try out some of the other MMOs out there. One of the ones I really enjoyed was Champions Online: Free for All, a free-to-play MMO on the Steam network. Aside from the incredible character customization (it took me hours to fine-tune my superhero outfit!), one of the things I most enjoyed about it was the concept of the Nemesis. At some point during the leveling-up experience, you get a chance to design and create your character's own supervillain ... who then randomly pops up from time to time to make your day more difficult! Now that I'm back to World of Warcraft, I keep thinking about that concept. Who would be my toon's main antagonist? Even though it's not possible to design one, there are tons of great villains to pick from in Azeroth. For my main, a Blood Elf paladin, I figure Kael'thas fits best. Lore-wise, he betrayed his people by making them dependent on demonic magic, so he'd be the top of any Sin'dorei hit list . It's also nice that whenever I am bored or frustrated with endgame content, he is always waiting in Magister's Terrace for me to pound on in hopes of getting a white chicken to ride! Who is your in-game nemesis? Is it a player from the opposing faction who is always capping flags in your battlegrounds? Is it that druid who is constantly grabbing your herbs a second before you can? Is it a raid boss your group is having trouble on? Is there a particular mob (or critter) that you cannot stand to let live?

Patch 4.2 is bringing one of the most ambitious daily quest hubs ever to World of Warcraft, as players dive into Ragnaros' fiery domain. Before players enter the Firelands, however, there is work to be done in the Regrowth, an area of Mount Hyjal under siege by Ragnaros' minions and the Druids of the Flame. Are you a bad enough dude to repel invaders from the Firelands? Players begin at the Sanctuary of Malorne, where Matoclaw, Malfurion, and Mylune offer players quests to fend off invaders, save the denizens of Hyjal, and team up with the ancients once again. Today, we're going to talk about one of the most fun dailies since the creation of bombing runs back in The Burning Crusade: turtle punting. Today's quests: Punting Season Echoes of Nemesis Remember, there are mild spoilers about quests launching with patch 4.2, so please be warned if you're particular about that sort of thing.

The nemesis system has long been one of the coolest features of Champions Online -- on paper, at least. The reality of the implementation leaves something to be desired according to players, though, and Cryptic hasn't offered much in the way of concrete details on a possible revamp. Today's Ask Cryptic focuses exclusively on Champions and showcases a number of questions from players keen on divining the future for their favorite costumed alter-egos. In addition to answering a query about nemesis, Champions devs are put to the test regarding a variety of issues including new heavy weapons skins, targeting concerns, lair updates, and the possibility of a player-content system like Star Trek Online's Foundry. "There is a bit of work to get it to fit Champs but we are checking it out. The Foundry is doing great in Star Trek and we have no doubt you can build stories in Champs that can blow theirs out of the stars," Cryptic says.

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider's pages. For every hero, there is a villain. For every light, there is a shadow. Every rose has its thorn, but if you would just pour some sugar on me ... erm. /cough. The point is that we all have our nemeses, from Hogger and Mor'ladim to Fel Reaver, Illidan, M'uru, and the Lich King himself. Maybe you got stomped too many times by the devilsaurs in Un'Goro Crater, or maybe Mimiron had your raid frustrated for weeks on end. For my guild, it was Sindragosa. When we got into ICC late in Wrath's life cycle, a new, small guild with a mixture of experienced raiders and players who had never ventured past heroic dungeons, we breezed through the first two wings. Blood Queen gave us a bit of trouble, but we soon swept past her and Dreamwalker and found ourselves facing off against the enemy from our loading screens, the last stop before Arthas himself. We went over the strategy, practiced our tomb placement, set up flares, and gave her a try. And another. And another. And yet another. Though we were all sick of hearing her voice, for some reason, we just couldn't get Sindragosa down. We had trouble with disconnects, lag, Blistering Cold, multi-tombs, tanks getting tombed, clearing stacks, and pretty much everything else imaginable. The whole guild was aching to slay that dragon, and when at long, long last we managed it, the jubilation was unlike anything we'd had before. I doubt even the Lich King's demise would elicit the kind of cheers I heard on Vent when she went down. Our nemesis was vanquished at last. Which boss or creature was (or is!) your greatest enemy in WoW? How long did you work on beating it? How did you celebrate when it was finally over?

If you've never made the trip to level 40 in Champions Online, the endgame is somewhat of a mystery. I remember prior to getting my first level 40 that people would talk about things like "Nemcon" and "dailies." I found it kind of strange that a level 35 character couldn't sidekick or otherwise experience anything similar to these things. That all changed for me when I journeyed into the UNITY building for the first time. It was a little confusing -- there were no easy guides telling me where to start NemCon or what the "Qliphothic research" was for. Fortunately, you guys don't have to feel as much like a noob as I did. Warning: This article includes some spoilers for the plot of NemCon.

The Star Trek universe caters to a whole lot of different interests. You've got your basic sci-fi fan, who enjoys the shows and movies but doesn't get super into them. You've also got your movie buffs, who perk up for showings of Wrath of Khan or Nemesis (ha!). Futurists marvel at the prophetic nature of old-school Trek tech, and casual fans used to flip on the boob tube to scope out Seven of Nine's ram scoops. And of course, Star Trek has its die-hard fans, the Trekkers. (What's wrong with calling them "Trekkies," again?) I noticed a handful at New York Comic Con, traipsing about in their uniforms, snapping group pictures, scanning the Anime Festival next door for signs of intelligent life. And that got me to thinking about socializing in Star Trek Online. Why is it often so lonely in space?

If you're fighting your way through Realtime Worlds' shiny new MMO, All Points Bulletin, and seek to stake your claim on a particular area, one of the ways you can let rival gang members (and police) know is by tagging signs around town. However, if you're trying to do it by yourself on a heavily populated map, it's a great way to wind up dead. After all, anyone can come along and shoot you while you're busy "spraypainting" your graffiti up. Today, we have a screenshot of a pair who managed to find an open spot and successfully pull off getting their design in place. This image comes to us courtesy of Brad, also known as Nemesis on the Zombie server, who writes in: "This screenshot was taken after a long shoot out in the waterfront district. A fellow clan member and I held out on a rooftop and happened upon a blank billboard. We decided that the waterfront district needed to know who we were." One Shots needs more screenshots! If you're playing an MMO -- from large to small -- we'd love to see one from you. All you have to do is email a screenshot to us here at oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing. • The Daily Grind: Which class is your arch-nemesis?

Admit it: even the nicest amongst us have a deep-rooted grudge against a particular class. Our foe. Our bane. Our arch-nemesis. It's the class we squint at in anger whenever we see them pop up on the battlefield or in our PUGs. It's the class that gives us physical hives whenever we come into close contact with one of their members. It's the class that we gladly devote a nine-page rant against on the official game forums, calling for their extermination, or at the very least, to be neutered. So what's your arch-nemesis class? Is it a class that repeatedly stamps all over your face in PvP? A class that is -- obviously -- so OP that you can't stand it? Perhaps it's a class that does whatever your class does, but better and with more flair. Maybe your arch-nemesis class seems to attract more mentally unstable and emotionally immature players than usual. So get it off your chest today -- which class is your arch-nemesis?
