Pinterest's new Today tabs offers curated boards and coronavirus info

Pinterest has historically done a very good job at battling misinformation on its platform, doing its best to hide anti-vaccine content and more recently providing custom search results related to the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, as more and more people are sheltering in place in their homes, Pinterest has seen its users increasingly search for inspiration around things like recipes, kids activities and self-care. To get people to the topics they're looking for faster, today Pinterest is launching a new "Today" tab that you'll see in the top navigation bar on its iOS and Android apps. The company wants it to be a one-stop source to see trending pins as well as curated topics based on the activity Pinterest is seeing with its users.

Google has assuaged Inbox fans by incorporating some of the defunct app's features into Gmail, but some of the best additions might still be on the horizon. Reddit user moodio shared an apparent leak showing a test version of Gmail for Android with reminders, pinned messages and category bundles (which help you deal with multiple messages at once). You might even see a quick "mark all as read" button so that you don't have to methodically select every message.

Pinterest has rolled out new tools that will help keep you sane if the pins you've been collecting for years have been driving you mad. To start with, you can now archive a board once you're done with it. Say, you've been using Pinterest to plan a party or a wedding -- you can toss that board to archive after you're done with it to keep things clean. By doing that, you're also stopping Pinterest from sending you relevant recommendations, so you don't have to keep seeing bouquets and wedding dresses if you're sick and tired of looking at them.

Pinterest introduces new ways for its users to access pinned items on the regular and today it's revealing yet another. Starting tomorrow, you can employ the company's visual search tech to hunt for things from inside its browser extensions. How does it work? Well, you can hover over an image on the site you're reading to find related items on Pinterest without having to leave that page.

Pinterest regularly adds new features that make using its digital scrapbook of sorts a more pleasant experience. Features like shopping pins, location pins and a search tool that can identify items in a photo all lend a hand compiling your boards. After redesigning profiles to make saving and sorting pins a bit easier, the company has completely retooled its iOS app to tidy up and offer quicker performance. The "new modern look" puts the focus on the pins themselves instead of icons, descriptions and profile images. Pinterest says the app is now "universally readable" as well, supporting 31 different languages.

If you're an avid pinner, finding items on your Pinterest boards can sometimes be quite the chore. Thanks to today's update, though, you should spend less time hunting for what you're after. The online repository updated user profiles to show the items you're most likely looking for first. Recently pinned items and boards are now shown first, as Pinterest says users search for items they've added in the last month most often. You can also browse by topic from your profile or from any board. If you're perusing that "Healthy eats" board pictured above, for example, you can tap "salad" to narrow the results. You can also sort your boards according to which ones were to pinned to recently or in alphabetical order. The new features are rolling out on Android and iOS starting today, so you should see the tools soon enough.

  • Pinterest's shopping pins arrive on Android for the holiday frenzy

After launching its Buyable Pins on iOS earlier this summer, Pinterest is looking to let the Google faithful in on the goods, too. As of today, the online repository is rolling out the feature to Android users. This means that you'll be able to purchase goods from retailers large and small without having to leave the app. We're talking stuff from the likes of Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus and more. In fact, the tally of Buyable Pins now numbers 60 million and a new Pinterest Shop curates trends for easy access. Just like regular ol' pins, you can search for the shopping items and filter them based on price and other criteria to find the exact items you're after. While today's news means Buyable Pins are available on both Android and iOS, they remain absent from the web for now, but Pinterest plans to employ them in your browser "in the future."

  • Pinterest's location pins offer easy access to directions and tips

Pinterest is quite handy for stowing away project ideas, recipes and more for future reference. Today, the internet repository is making those stored pins even more informative. Location info is now automatically added to pinned links, so you'll have easy access to tips from other users, contact details, directions and more. You'll notice that pins have a thumbnail preview showing the location on a map, and if you tap the image, you'll get recommendations from other users. Pinterest will also show you other pins that reference that spot, too. From there, calling for reservations or getting directions via Google Maps or Apple Maps are just a click away as well. You can browse nearby spots on the map too, in case you're wondering what other folks have found in the area. The new location pins are rolling out today, so you should be seeing them in your feed and on your boards soon enough.

  • Pinterest users: expect more adverts in 2015

Social networks know that no one wants adverts all up in their feed --it's no wonder they try to sugar coat paid-for posts. Twitter sneaks in "promoted" tweets; Facebook has its "sponsored" posts; and soon you can expect "Promoted Pins" from -- where else? -- Pinterest. The program has been running in beta for a while, but starting January 1st, it's open to all advertisers. What does this mean for you, dear Pinner? Well, we imagine a few more pictures of brand name lattes mixed in with all the photos of rosetta'd lattes. With around 70 million users, the picture-based network might not have the numbers of Twitter or Facebook, but it does have the advantage that many are already using the site to collect and search for things they want. Pinterest is also launching a program called "The Pinstitute" to teach advertisers how to better connect with (and be less annoying to) its users. In reality, it sounds more like analytics and feedback, but anything that might prevent your meticulously curated boards from being soiled with bad branding is fine with us.

  • Pinterest Chrome extension brings inspiration to freshly-opened tabs

When you open a new tab in Google's Chrome browser, you're greeted with a search box, rows of recently-visited sites and a tucked-in menu for individual apps. It's really not very inspiring, is it? Pinterest doesn't think so, and thanks to an internal make-a-thon, there's a new Chrome extension that aims to remedy the gray box blues. Once you've installed the add-on, you'll be prompted to select what you're interested in for the day amongst sports, food, photography and several others. When you open a new tab, you'll be greeted with a full-bleed image populated from Artsy, 500px or National Geographic. I'm told these are the libraries for now due to the "good spectrum" of options they house, but more could be on the way later. On top of the visual stimulus, Google Calendar info is situated at the bottom left while weather details for your current location are pulled in from Yahoo. And of course, info for the displayed photo and the ability to pin it is down on the right. The digital repository already has an extension for adding to boards from websites, and that's included here too, but the original will still be available for those who don't want to spice up their tabs.

  • Pinterest intros Place Pins so you can map out all the places you'll go

Pinterest doesn't want to just be the place you hoard random internet goodies, or aspirational items for hobby boards -- it wants to become a real social tool. And it's doing that today with Place Pins: private or collaborative travel maps highlighting local places of interest and recommendations. If it sounds like Foursquare without the obnoxious check-ins and "Mayor of..." notifications, that's because it is -- the company's API is powering these pins. Maps loaded up with recommendations for good eats and sights to see can be created in tandem with new boards or added to existing ones and feature all the necessary contact info, like address and phone number, you want when looking up where to go. Pinterest's even set up a feed dedicated to Place Pins(piration) and curated by notable travel outfits like Condé Nast Traveler, Airbnb, Fodor's and others, so you can get a sense of how it works. It's pretty simple, but useful stuff. Now, all you need is a good cluster of jet set friends to get the recommendations rolling and maybe some cash to actually get you out of Podunk and into those real-world, pinned places.

  • Pinterest's APIs let developers embed pins directly on their websites (updated)

A lot of people use Pinterest to keep track of stuff they'd like to buy, places they want to go and food they want to eat, but there's always been separation between Pinterest and the actual sources of those desires -- you only had the option to click a Pinterest button on a site to pin the content in question to your board of choice. No longer. Pinterest has taken another step to strengthen its partnerships with third-party websites with the release of its APIs today. The tools allow web developers to embed recent, trending and most-clicked pins (that update regularly according to what folks are pinning), and even implement a Pinterest search surface that surfaces pins of items from your domain surface custom search results on their pages, too. Folks will also now be able to pin stuff directly from websites, so as to not interrupt the retail experience with a detour to Pinterest proper. To illustrate these newly bestowed powers, Pinterest has partnered up with a slew of well-known sites, including Zappos, Target, Walmart, BuzzFeed, and Better Homes And Garden -- and if you'd like the full list and further description of how to use the new APIs, hit the source below. Update: Our earlier version of this story mistakenly indicated that the new APIs enabled searching Pinterest on third party sites. In fact, the APIs only allow devs to create a custom keyword search and embed those search results on a webpage.

  • Pinterest now ready for iPad

Pinterest is rolling out its mobile apps and making it easy for users to pin things on the go. The image-centric social network announced today that it released a universal iOS app that includes a new iPad version and an updated iPhone version. On the iPad, the app mimics the website with a fullscreen layout that lets users view a handful of pins at a time. Pinterest users can swipe to call up the navigation menu to view different categories and use the integrated browser to visit the site that was the source of a pin. The app supports most of the social features of Pinterest including sharing, liking, repinning and commenting. The iPhone app received an update that improves the mobile experience with a new two-column layout and faster performance. This improved UI lets users see more Pins on their display, so they can enjoy Pinterest when they are away from their iPad or desktop. The Pinterest app is available for free from the iOS App Store.

Sure, we may not have the special Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary Wii or DSi XL, or the Super Mario All-Stars re-release, but Europe and Japan don't have these pins -- or this screensaver. The newest items in the Club Nintendo shop are these four commemorative Mario pins, each shipping in early November for a steep 450 Coins -- which means you can go ahead and forget about collecting them all. On the other end of the price scale is a new Mario screensaver, featuring footage from games throughout the series, which you can download for 10 Coins. Compared to the pins, it's a bargain! But it's also a screensaver.

A new Space Invaders game and a big milestone mean that Taito gets to start milking their original cash cow anew. The latest item to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the dusty old shooter is a set of nice-looking pinbadges. Numbering thirty badges and costing thirty(-five) dollars, this set includes each individual Invader, the player-controlled cannon thing, the monster from the arcade game's sideart, and several neat logo pins. We especially enjoy the "I (heart with '30th' inside it) (one of the Invaders)" group. If you're going to put a bunch of holes in your stuff, you might as well celebrate an awesome game series while you're at it. These pins will ship in "late May" from NCSX.
