  • PotBS user content submissions are open again

    In case you weren't aware, Pirates of the Burning Sea is all for the user content submissions and it just happens that flag and sail submissions have been reopened. That's right, you can craft flags and sails of your own with the help of a dedicated forum. Then, after getting that perfect design it can be submitted for developer approval. Optionally, feel free to spread the word on your new flag or sail and get some votes for the sticky thread where people will do just that -- vote on your stuff! Flags and sails aren't the only things you can create, submit and eventually see in-game. Flying Lab Software also loves it when you design and submit ships as well. This could lead to some very cool community projects in the future. Unfortunately right now the ship forums are a bit sparse, mostly due to a forums move that happened a while back. We think that given the creativity of several other MMO communities, it's not unreasonable to expect some truly amazing designs from the ship-obsessed fans of PotBS.

    It's Friday, which means that not only is the weekend here, but it's time once again for our weekly query: we want to know just What aRe yoU Playing?I know quite a few folks will be headed into the Pirates of the Burning Sea preorder this weekend, as FLS just recently opened the floodgates on their servers. Me, I've just gotten my WoW addiction back into gear, so I'll be back pushing my very first character off into Outland and up towards 70. I'm also planning to head into Dungeons and Dragons Online for the first time-- being that I'm a huge fan of pen and paper D&D, it'll be interesting to see how Turbine has translated Eberron into MMO form.What are you up to in the virtual worlds this weekend?%Gallery-11461%

    Dog may be man's best friend, but parrot is clearly pirate's best friend. This lovely blue bird is part of the Pirates of the Burning Sea pre-order rewards. (Though we hope there will be more parrots available as we progress through the game -- this one is quite charming as it fidgets on our shoulder and it would be a shame to limit these adorable pets to pre-order customers only.)   • Pirates of the Burning Sea giveaway

    The MMO Gamer is holding an SEO-sponsored contest: translate a phrase from a movie into pirate-speak and win one of four Pirates of the Burning Sea pre-order packs, which include a pre-boarding party key, a landing party key, and the game's soundtrack. The contest deadline is Friday the 11th, though, so go to the site, comment your entry, and wait. Here's my example of a translation: "Avast! Me name is Inigo Montoya. You keelhauled me pappy; prepare to walk the plank!" Except yours should be, you know, more clever. The only caveat is that you can't use lines from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.     In case you missed it while madly dashing about for your festive hat, 2008 has arrived. Since it is the New Year, we have all seen the articles making predictions and projections of what is to come in the following months. Some of these articles are great while others seem lacking. My problem with all of them is that they are too firmly grounded in reality. That's about to change. Several hours of sleep depravation, a couple candy bars, and the last few drops of that glorious orange liquid called "Game Fuel" have lead to the following list of wishes that I would like to see granted in the next 12 months. So, game companies, get out your barbed whips and chain your developers to their desks! You've got a lot of work ahead of you.

  • Pirates of the Burning Sea preboarding today!

    Though the Pirates of the Burning Sea servers don't officially go live until January 22nd, players who pre-ordered the game have had access to game servers since 1PM EST today. Players participating in the "preboarding" program will be able to play up to level 21 and keep their characters after the game's official launch. And for those of you who haven't pre-ordered, there's still time to pick up a pre-order box and play before launch! If you head to your local Best Buy or GameStop you should be able to pick up a pre-order box (not just a pre-order -- there's a physical box that will have your preboarding code) or order online from Amazon, GoGamer, Direct2Drive (download only), or the Station Store (download only). (Your safest bet here may be the Station Store, as they'll apply your preboarding code directly to your Station account, while Best Buy is reporting backorders and we've heard reports of problems getting the code via e-mail from Amazon.) For full details on the preboarding program, check out the official preboarding FAQ.If two weeks of early gameplay isn't enough to tempt you, pre-orders also receive special swag: in-game swords for each fighting style, an in-game parrot pet, and (if you pick up a physical pre-order box, not just a download ) a CD filled with 60 minutes of delightful pirate-y music.

    Flying Lab Software's Aether has taken a moment to pull himself away from all the pre-launch craziness surrounding any MMO only a couple weeks away from retail. Why, you ask? To give us some information on pre-order bonuses, I say! All silliness aside, these items are pretty hot.What you'll be getting for pre-ordering is three swords -- one for each style of combat -- that all share the same stats. The Musketeer's Matching Blades (Florentine style), Old World Cutlass (Dirty Fighting style) and Swedish Rapier (Fencing style) are all level 1 swords that are equivalent to the power of a level 20 weapon. We're pretty sure that we haven't heard of a pre-order item this powerful in quite some time, if ever. Pirates of the Burning Sea is set to launch on January 22nd, so if you want this pre-order bonus it may be a good idea to do it now rather than later.

  • Mythic Worlds and FLS CEO on PotBS

    Mystic Worlds is among the many blogs (including ours) who have been posting impressions of Pirates of the Burning Sea during their beta, but she got something that not many other sites have gotten: answers from the CEO of Flying Lab Software himself. Russell Williams, FLS' CEO, emailed her about what she'd posted, and countered a few of her concerns about the game before launch.To her point that the female avatars look the same as men, he replied that FLS wanted customization to work across both sexes, so they had to use the same models (with a few modifications, obviously) for both. He says that the swashbuckling does need some tuning (and keep in mind that there are still weeks before the game launches for FLS to fix some of these issues), and that the invisible walls and tiny spaces in the beta are being worked on. He also says that a lot of the late-game instances and towns are much bigger-- as we heard in the press tour, FLS got better at designing as they went along (does that mean they should have designed the end of the game first?).Finally, he says that the three "star systems" FLS targeted were sailing combat, organic PvP, and the economy, so if you're looking for those in an MMO, they'll have something to offer. Of course they're working hard on everything else as well, but those were the three key things he says they aimed for.The date is almost on us-- after January 22nd, the game goes officially live for everyone, and then Williams has to let the game speak for itself.

    Something is afoot in the Pirates of the Burning Sea beta. Intercepted missives have begun to surface hinting at a major event that may occur as early as this weekend. Are you the intrepid seafarer who will be able to put the pieces together?   • Pirates of the Burning Sea server names revealed

    Keen and Graev have the list of servers for the Pirates of the Burning Sea launch, coming less than a month away now. The game will open with 12 North American servers, six European servers, and an unannounced number of Oceanic servers. Some of the servers are named after pirates (Blackbeard, Morgan, Kidd), while others are named after actual places (Guadeloupe, Barbados), and there's no indication from FLS if the separate naming conventions mean anything (WoW, for example, names PvP and RP servers in certain ways from standard PvE servers). If you're planning to set sail in Pirates at launch, now's the time to pick your server. And don't forget that if you preorder the game, you get to jump in ahead of time.Finally, on an almost-completely-unrelated- but-still-so-strange- we're-reporting-it-anyway note, West Karana points out that one of the servers' namesakes, Antigua, recently became a real place for pirates-- copyright pirates, that is. Antigua (the country, not the server), according to Slashdot, can ignore US copyrights for up to a year. So if you want to be a real pirate, there's only one server to play on.

  • Pirates of the Burning Sea is ready to be boarded by all beta testers again

    There was a mishap on the PotBS mizzenmasts earlier today as thousands of beta tester's under the stress test and open beta flags walked the planks and could not login leaving them to flee to Booty Bay. Admiral, Horatio Loreblower reports they do have a suspect in custody, and he almost died ten times in the process when capturing said prisoner while his officers looked on dumbfounded.. The Royal Navy said shortly after Loreblower's victory party that the man responsible is Jolly Roger, and will set trial for interfering with the Early Beta at Sea Treaty. When asked for comment, Roger's parrot who went to law school released this statement: "Yohoho. Ye' scurvy Beta dogs plundarrr all my epic loots. I do it agen if I could, even with SOE on my syde!" I'm out of control; however, all beta accounts have been reinstated, and we don't know how many parrots Jolly Roger used to pull this off, but everything is fixed. Thank you, and please enjoy the rest of the beta while you can. The beta ends the morning on January 1, better get a move on! If you missed out on our earlier PotBS coverage, we got all sorts: crafting, missions, press tour, galleries, and the news mound. If you haven't played PotBS in awhile I recommend giving it another chance. The Developers have been hard at work, polishing the game, fixing it, getting it ready for its big launch come January 22nd. If you have never played PotBS go here to get a key and download the open beta client at no cost. If you pre-order the game you get early access to the game by two whole weeks too. It gets better, as with most betas, the end of beta events are coming. Lots of scurvy high-sea plundering end of beta shenanigans are planned to take place any day now.

  • EVE: Trinity is one of 2007's top game innovations

    Next-gen.biz has compiled their list of the top 10 game innovations of 2007, and there is only one MMO on the list: EVE Online. Next-gen decided to honor EVE for taking on the task of completely revamping their graphical engine, and showing that a well-designed MMO can be updated forever.If I was honoring EVE, that's probably the least of the innovations I'd step up to honor them for. The realtime skill system, the open-ended gameplay, and the masterpiece of an economic system all rank higher than what the ships look like, but then again, this is a list for 2007. And hey, it's a year-end list, so it's hardly definitive anyway (apparently no one told him about Trinity's whole bootini incident).So if we put together our list of the best MMO innovations of 2007, what would be on there? The Tier 5 token system from Burning Crusade? The "stored labor" crafting system in Pirates of the Burning Sea (or would that be on the 2008 list)? Tabula Rasa's mix of FPS, RPG, and MMO?   • 'What If' Mechanics: Notoriety

    I got to thinking about the nature of quests in most MMOs, and how they're as generic as possible, to appeal to a specific class, or race, or faction. And then I was reading Kevin's Pirates of the Burning Sea post, and got to musing how cool it would be if there were a worldwide system in place to accumulate notoriety.By that I mean, what if your in-game exploits actually affected the way you're perceived? What if you were such a notorious ganker, for example, that the game suddenly put a reward on your head? What if you logged in one day and found that you were on the Public Enemies list, and other players could receive substantial coin for taking you out? Or the opposite: what if you were widely known for your altruism, and that affected other players' perception of you, to the point where they would see actual physical changes in your avatar, such as a halo of light around your head?MMOs are great for the shared social experience, but I'd like to see one's actions having a lasting effect in-game, where reputation affects more than your status among NPCs. Is this something that's already in place somewhere?

    Like many of you, I am a fan of all things Pirate. I know the difference between Calico Jack's flag and Blackbeard's flag, and I know the difference between Stede Bonnet and a Bluebonnet. It goes without saying, but since I'm a columnist I get to say it anyway, that I was very much looking forward to Flying Lab Software's new MMORPG, Pirates of the Burning Sea. I was fortunate enough to meet the good folks at Sony Online Entertainment at Dragon*Con this year and begged for a beta key. Thanks to them, I was able to take a sneak peek at the game.To their credit, Flying Lab does a wonderful job of listening to their beta players, and while the game is not yet completely polished, I have seen many improvements in the game in the short time I've participated in the beta. There was much consternation when Flying Lab announced that they would be partnering with Sony Online Entertainment to publish the game, but aside from the Station Pass and front-end patcher, Sony actually has very little input into this game. To be clear, this is very much Flying Lab's game, not SOE's. But how is the game, you ask?

    We at Massively have been watching the Pirates of the Burning Sea beta for quite a while, but this week, Sony emailed us with an offer to go where we'd never gone before: the endgame. So yesterday morning, I strapped on my cutlass, adjusted my tricorner, and logged in and joined the "FLS Leisure Tours" group to check out a press tour of the Pirates open beta.While lots of people have gone through the early game a few times already (and you can right now in the open beta), I was very interested to see what FLS had in store for us at later levels.   • The purpose of beta testing

    Anyway Games has some good thoughts up (I especially like that continuum in the title between "testing" and "fun") about what beta tests are really for these days. It seems you can't publish an MMO without having a beta test-- the world is so big and meant to support so many players that you not only need volunteer help for QA, but you have to have enough people to stress the servers, just in case.But is it OK to invite players into a game that's not actually done yet? Richard Garriott blames TR's slow start on a poor beta reception, and I was one of those players who wasn't impressed with the early beta (although I don't know if the game has actually improved since then). I also have been playing the Pirates beta since a few weeks ago, and after playing it again yesterday afternoon, I was pretty astounded at how far the game has come just within a week or two of development. There is no question that the game I was playing a while ago was definitely unfinished compared to the game as it is now, and even though it's in open beta, there will undoubtedly be improvements before the game goes live.So what's the purpose of a beta? Is it marketing for the game, or a massively multiplayer quality assurance session? Every developer has to decide for themselves, obviously-- there's no golden point at which the game is good enough to be played, but buggy enough to still be tested by the unwashed volunteers. The best you can ask for, at this point, is a development schedule that gives you a game strong enough to give a great experience while buggy, and a beta testing crowd interested enough to stick around and help you fix the bugs that are left.

  • Warcry interviews Pirates' Content Director on creating a virtual Caribbean

    Lots of the talk about Pirates lately has been about game specifics, but in interviewing FLS' content director, Warcry has taken a different path-- they've gotten into the historical basis and influence of the virtual Caribbean that we'll all be sailing around in come January.The list of pirate influences on the game is impressive-- they've got everything from Monkey Island to Horatio Hornblower on there. And they've got a lot of historical accuracy as well-- just as there was no real authority in the real pirate-filled Caribbean of days past, FLS wants to make it so that there is no authority in this one, either. Carry a ship full of valuables, and risk losing them all. Real-life historical figures will also make an appearance (both Kidd and Blackbeard are mentioned), and just like in real-life, wind is a major factor when sailing around (though in my experience, wind was more frustrating than anything-- it makes strategy in battles fun, but when I was just trying to sail somewhere, not having the wind at my back was a real pain).Nice to hear about all the influences FLS is putting into the game. A couple of your intrepid Massively writers are set for a press tour of the game later today, so hopefully we'll get a chance to see the other, non-historical side of the game: the supernatural endgame elements.
