  • Playing 'Portal 2' might make you smarter

"Them games'll rot your brain, you know," said the fictional midwestern mom that we've invented for the purposes of this story. Grudgingly, we'd accept her admonishment, put down our copy of Sonic the Hedgehog and go back to playing "educational" titles like Oregon Trail and Carmen Sandiego. Now, however, it turns out that a game like Portal 2 is better for your brain than an actual brain-training game like Lumosity.

Portal 2 and Octodad: Dadliest Catch have a lot in common: Both are born from an independent developer concept; both feature a clueless collection of non-playable characters; and they each explore the absurdity of the human condition. Now, thanks to a Midweek Madness sale, both are available for a discounted price on Steam. Portal 2 is available for $4.99, 75 percent off its regular price (or $8.74 for two copies for co-op adventures. Octodad: Dadliest Catch can be added to your Steam library for $9.99, 33 percent off (or $13.33 for the game and soundtrack; which, shockingly, does include the Lionel Richie classic "Stuck on You"). Each sale ends at 10am Pacific on Friday, April 25. In other deal-related news, the newly released music exploration game FRACT OSC is available for 10 percent off ($13.49) until 10am Pacific on April 29. [Image: Young Horses]

Cyber Front, the Japanese publisher of Telltale's The Walking Dead, Valve's Portal series and CD Projekt's The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings has been dissolved by parent company Kaga Electronics. According to a Gamasutra translation of a statement posted by the company on its website, Cyber Front was subject to a change in management in March of this year. Since that time, the company struggled to rebuild, and on December 19, the decision was made to close shop. Cyber Front recently also published Lab Zero's Skullgirls, which has had a string of bad luck lately, though it will be re-emerging on XBLA and the PSN in January as Skullgirls Encore.

Ever wish Portal was a little more portable? Well wish no longer - GBATemp forum-goers Smealum and Lobo are crafting Aperture Science, a homebrew Portal game that can be played on a Nintendo DS. You can download a playable build right off Smealum's website now, but keep in mind that Aperture Science isn't complete, and the game requires a flash cart to play it. The game's story centers on Doug Rattman, the Aperture scientist responsible for the infamous "The cake is a lie" scribbling, as well as the man who saved main protagonist Chell from death between the events of Portal and Portal 2. There's also a level editor, should you be feeling creative.

The PlayStation Move-powered "In Motion" expansion for Portal 2 received a free batch of DLC today on the PlayStation 3, developer Sixense Studios announced. In Motion owners can immediately access the new content by installing a patch released today on the PlayStation Network. Sixense's "Non-Emotional Manipulation" DLC adds a co-op campaign to In Motion, allowing two players (using two PlayStation Move controllers) to team up in split-screen or online cooperative modes. Cross-play with PC players via the Portal 2 MotionPack is also supported. A patch released last year added PlayStation Move support to Portal 2's core campaign and co-op levels, though Move-specific gameplay mechanics such as Portal Surfing and Scaling are exclusive to Sixense's expansion. Both Portal 2 and the In Motion expansion are currently on sale for 20 percent off in the PlayStation Store. PlayStation Plus members get an additional 40 percent discount off the sale price.

Portal 2's multiplayer pawns, Atlas and P-Body, have seen some tough times and even tougher test chambers, as highlighted by ThreeA Toys' latest figurines. ThreeA revealed the prototypes for Atlus and P-Body last year, as smooth, gray statuettes. Now, the figures have a dinged-up coat of paint and classy lens details, along with a pair of Portal guns, and they're looking fly.ThreeA showed off the new prototypes during an event in Taiwan, as spotted and photographed by Tomopop. It's still unclear if Atlas and P-Body will include any LEDs or flashier add-ons, or when they'll be available for collectible consumption. In other video game toy news, ThreeA announced a partnership with Capcom to make mecha figures straight out of Lost Planet. Check out Tomopop's gallery of the ThreeA show here.

We've just spent time with Intel's Mooly Eden, who is spearheading the chip maker's push into what it's calling "perceptual computing," which is using natural and intuitive interactions to control your PC. The company has partnered with Creative on a Kinect-esque 3D depth-camera that can be used to control applications and play games, do faux-green screen broadcasting and collaborate with colleagues. While Microsoft's motion-tracker is designed to encompass a whole room, Intel's has a shallower depth of field that's more suited for close-up work. We got to play with the company's demos away from the noise of the show floor, as well as playing a gesture-based version of Portal 2 by Sixsense that's shorn of the controllers that Eden used to demonstrate it in 2011. Interested in seeing what's likely to appear in what the company promises is the very near future? Head on down past the break.

  • Del Toro got Valve's permission to use GlaDOS' voice in Pacific Rim

The presence of Ellen McLain's sultry, robotic trills in the Pacific Rim trailer above filled us with much, much joy when we first saw it last December, but we couldn't help but feel like director Guillermo del Toro wasn't being entirely original. Furthermore, we wondered how Valve would feel about such flagrant counterfeiting; we know it doesn't own Ellen McLain's voice or anything, but come on.None of that is actually an issue, as it turns out, since del Toro actually obtained permission from Valve to use GlaDOS' voice in the film, according to the Toronto Sun. "I wanted very much to have her, because I'm a big Portal fan," del Toro said. "But just as a wink. She's not cake-obsessed."McLain's vocal work in the actual film will be run through fewer GlaDOS-inducing voice filters in the final film, del Toro says, but he wanted her voice to be completely recognizable in the trailer. It's also worth noting that there's no actual crossover between Valve's Portal/Half Life universe and Pacific Rim's, even though Pacific Rim is a movie about universes crossing over.

Director Guillermo del Toro had previously mentioned actress Ellen McLain, best known in gaming circles as the voice of GLaDOS, would use her vocal talent in his upcoming monster movie Pacific Rim. We just had no idea McLain would reprise her GLaDOs voice exactly. It's like hearing Majel Barrett as the voice of Siri.

Steam's Portal 2 now supports split-screen and Big Picture mode, meaning PC and Mac players can enjoy inter-spatial robo-cooperation on their TV sets. Valve's patch notes say split-screen co-op is accessed by pressing X on the second controller in the first co-op menu. The patch also fixed a couple of minor errors, including not being able to exit the Robot Enrichment or Create Test Chambers menus with the controller. We at the Joystiq Enrichment Center would like to remind you that any inability to exit Joystiq is perfectly regular, and your enforced presence on our website is most appreciated.

ThinkGeek, purveyor of fine caffeinated gummy bears and assorted nerdicological sundries, has added inflatable Personality Cores to its already bustling assortment of officially licensed Portal 2 memorabilia. At $25 each, the spheres themselves measure about 12 inches in diameter and are made from "Non 7 phthalate PVC vinyl, CPSIA Standard," whatever that means. Test subjects can choose between "Wheatley" and "Spaaaaaaaaaace" color palettes, though neither sphere appears to be truly sentient and/or inherently evil either way. All we need now is an inflatable GlaDOS, and then maybe we won't have to be so alone at night.
