  • Sony E3 2010 press conference set for June 15

Sony has sent out official "save the date" notices for its E3 2010 press conference, which will again return to the Shrine Auditorium at its usual 11:30AM PT time slot on Tuesday, June 15. Unlike Microsoft's duo of presentations this year, Sony won't be hosting a separate event for PlayStation Move, which already grabbed the spotlight during GDC. Unsurprisingly, the announcement also notes that Sony will be available for appointments during E3, June 15–17, which might offer a chance to check out Tretton's promised Killzone 3. At the very least, we'll finally get our mouths on that delicious batter he spoke of. Right? Right?! You promised us cake!

  • Rumor: Apple buys Intrinsity

    04.05.2010

We've heard a few times now that Apple was ready to pick up some smaller, innovative hardware companies, and the rumor mill now says that chipmaker Intrinsity was purchased by Apple late last week. Rumors first hit on April 1st about the company being sold to a bigger buyer, and on Friday at least one employee was saying the buyer was in fact Apple. There's still no official word of a sale, as far as we can tell, but maybe Apple is waiting for a certain press conference to reveal that a new company will be providing chips for future, oh I don't know, iPhones. Intrinsity certainly fits the bill for the kind of company that Apple would want to buy with all its cash -- it's behind some of the fastest mobile processors out there, and that's certainly what Apple is looking for. It's also unencumbered by other ownership (which means Apple can pick it up outright), and it's got that nice mix of innovation and quality that Apple usually looks for. In short, even before the event on Thursday, we can probably expect to see Intrinsity behind some of Apple's processors in the future -- if they haven't made a few already. [via Engadget]

  • Microsoft to host E3 Natal event June 13, media briefing June 14

    03.25.2010

Microsoft has sent out a "save the date" email announcing its major events leading up to E3 2010 (June 15–17). The first event, the "World Premiere 'Project Natal' for Xbox 360 Experience," is open to all ages and will be held on Sunday, June 13 at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. No further details have been provided, though Microsoft announced earlier this month that it's bringing "the full lineup" of Natal titles to E3. The following morning, on Monday, June 14, Microsoft will hold its annual E3 media briefing at the Wiltern Theater. The event will be restricted to ages 18 and older. With the media getting a taste of Natal the night before, it should be interesting to see what Microsoft has up its sleeve for the actual briefing. Expect more details on both events in the near future.

  • Intel to be part of Nokia's MWC press conference -- a new Booklet, or something more?

Well, this is interesting -- Intel just sent us an invitation to Nokia's press event at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week. We're told that the two companies will update us on the "latest developments" from their relatively new relationship, before Nokia launches into its solo presser directly afterwards. That could mean pretty much anything from a ho-hum Atom N450 refresh of the Booklet 3G to a fire-breathing Moorestown Maemo 5 phone, so we're obviously extremely curious to see what goes down -- our money is on the more conservative side of things, since we're thinking Intel just wants to have a presence at MWC, but we do love to be surprised.

  • Intel Core presser: 32nm Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 CPUs (update: video!)

Intel has just concluded its first CES press event of 2010, dedicated to "announcing" the already well known Arrandale and Clarkdale CPUs. They will be part of Intel's planned 27 total SKUs coming in 2010, including four varieties of Core i3, eight Core i5s, and five Core i7 models. We were treated to a demo showing off a Core i5 laptop CPU running a 1080p video with another video stream overlaid on top of it with a measly 10% CPU usage. Dragon Age: Origins was also used to demonstrate the graphics capabilities of the GPU (integrated into the CPU packaging with these new procs), though the jittery frame rate suggested that sticking to Bejewelled might be a better idea without discrete graphics. Mia Hamm was brought out to do a bit of exercising and to provide us with an analogy for Intel's built-in Turbo Boost tech, which is said to work as naturally and as smoothly as the human heart rate increasing when necessary. Scanning the sheet of new mobile CPUs (available after the break), we notice that the presently popular Core i5-520M ($225 when bought in bulk) and Core i3-330M (unlisted) appear to be the most affordable on deck, with the more powerful Core i7-620M (up to 3.33GHz with Turbo Boost) and ULV Core i7-640UM (up to 2.26GHz) likely to attract the most attention from those who don't like compromise. The i7-640UM fits within an 18W maximum TDP, while the majority of the line will be at 35W, with 25W low-voltage options available too. Intel was keen to remind us this includes the 10W "extra" juice consumed by the chipset and graphics which are obviated by the new integrated design. Paul Otellini has managed to keep some announcements out of Shaun Maloney's hands, we were told, which means this afternoon's keynote (7.30PM EST) from the CEO may have some stuff we've not yet seen. Not entirely likely, but we can always hope. At least now that this is over, we can start prowling the Las Vegas Convention Center and delivering you hands-on impressions of all the new gear coming out with the new 32nm CPUs. Update: we've added a video of the Core i5 vs Core 2 Duo after the break. %Gallery-81982%

It's CES week and that means the press conferences never stop, with Sharp the next up to flaunt its wares for the coming year. Last year the company ducked the Widget onslaught and continued its own AquosNet path, we'll see what 2010 has in store.

We're in place to see what Toshiba's got for us this year. We're figuring Cell TV is a must (banners around the LVCC make that obvious) and 3D is a given but we're wondering if an updated Blu-ray player, or another sighting of last year's Media Center Extender TV that never appeared are in the card. Just a few more minutes until 10 p.m. pst when we find out for sure.

  • Nokia and Microsoft to announce an "alliance" tomorrow -- what? Update: Office on Nokia phones

    08.11.2009

We're not sure what to make of this, but we were just invited to a joint Microsoft / Nokia teleconference during which the two companies will announce an "alliance." Yeah, there are some pretty wild possibilities there -- Nokia going WinMo? Redmond going Symbian? The creation of MaeWinMo? -- but considering the featured speakers are Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft's business division, and Kai Öistämö, Nokia's EVP for devices, we're guessing the real announcement will be something more pedestrian, like native Exchange support on Symbian or possibly that upcoming Atom netbook running Windows 7. Otherwise, hell -- Nokia would be supporting three different mobile OSs, and that seems just a little too crazy, even for Espoo. We'll see -- it all goes down tomorrow at 11AM Eastern.Update: This is probably unrelated, but Microsoft's Mac BU just called its own presser for Thursday, so if you're looking to spend the night weaving wild nonsensical conspiracy theories, we'd say all the pieces are in place.Update 2: Told you it was nothing too out there -- the Wall Street Journal says Microsoft will announce it's working on a version of Office for Nokia phones. Anyone surprised? Didn't think so.

Yes, Fanboy! You may go to E3. Virtually, that is. SCEE has confirmed to us that the Sony E3 press conference will be broadcast via Home, but there's a catch -- it won't be live. The streaming will begin one to two hours after the actual presentation takes place at the Presentation Podium. This should be true of both the US and EU regions. While you're waiting for Home to catch up, make sure you check back here at 11am PST (2pm EST / 7pm BST) for our liveblog of the event on Tuesday, June 2.

With E3 coming up, and amazing and/or hilariously awkward conferences on the way (get your bingo cards ready!), Crispy Gamer's Kyle Orland offers a look back at the most memorable conference moments of E3's past. Remember Reggie's first appearance, when he was trying to act like a tough guy for some reason? Remember when Rock Revolution revolted against its own presenter? Perhaps you've managed to forget Jamie Kennedy's stint as an Activision conference host. No doubt Jamie Kennedy has tried. We're a bit surprised not to see Nintendo's 2008 conference represented. Orland took the high road and used some of the 10 slots for historically interesting press conference moments. We suppose there's quite enough talk online about that particular conference anyway.

  • Archos event June 11th: 5-inch Android tablet with voice expected

This one's a bit of a stretch but totally plausible. Archos just announced a press conference in Paris on June 11th -- that's a fact. However, the choice of Android-green in the invite above has caused widespread speculation that we'll be getting a first peep at Archos' heavily rumored Android-based device. Remember, TI was kind enough to give us the full specs on a 10-mm thin Archos Internet Media Tablet "with all the functionalities of a premium smartphone" back in February. At that time, TI listed specs like a 5-inch high-resolution screen, Adobe Flash support, TV recording, HD playback, 500GB of storage, 7 hours of video playback off battery, voice and HSUPA data radio all powered by a smokin' OMAP3440 processor from TI. If true then we can expect to see the device hinted at in the invite launch in Q3. [Via SlashGear, thanks Chris]Read -- Archos Press eventRead -- Archos Internet Media Tablet [February 9th, 2009]

  • The9 may release WotLK to China on February 19th

    by

    02.11.2009

Rumor has it that The9, the company that runs World of Warcraft in China, will be releasing the game's latest expansion there a week and a day from today, on February 19th, after holding a press conference a day earlier. We just recently got sent a question here at WoW Insider asking why the US and EU kills were often called "world firsts," and this is why: China usually gets expansion content much later than the other regions of the game do.But recently, Blizzard mentioned that they were aiming to release the content closer together, and this appears to be a result of that: it's still not simultaneous, obviously, but a few months is better than a year or so. Apparently 17173.com has heard that China will be getting Wrath of the Lich King next week, so if that does happen, we can look for the first Chinese level 80 and the first Chinese clears of Naxx and the other endgame raids soon after that.

There's not much of a surprise in store now, seeing as we've already seen official photos of Amazon's newest iteration of its e-book reader (and gotten a handful of info on price and release date). Still, we'll be there liveblogging and blowing it out Engadget style come 10AM ET Monday morning -- and who knows, maybe Bezos will announce some other colors.

  • Amazon to host press event at library, innocently whistling when asked about the Kindle 2

It could mean anything that Amazon is hosting a press event Monday morning, February 9th at the Morgan Library here in New York City. Maybe they just want to talk about how much they enjoy huge archives of original manuscripts and the smell of aged paper. Whatever the case may be, the last time we went to an Amazon event, they ended up launching the Kindle, so it's not crazy to speculate that we very well could see the introduction of a new iteration of the successful e-book. We've pinged the company for more solid word, but it's been radio silence thus far. Of course, we'll be there live covering any news as it breaks, so just plan on being here... or being square.
