In between launching a range of outlandish pink products and affordable accessories so far this year, Razer made the surprising move of abandoning its online game store and mobile team. The latter, in particular, is an awkward move after two generations of Razer Phones, while the likes of ASUS, Xiaomi, Nubia and Vivo are capitalizing on the rapidly growing mobile gaming market. Never one to admit defeat, CEO Min-Liang Tan said this was just part of his company's evolving mobile gaming strategy, with its focus shifted to software as the industry transitions to 5G.

If you're in the US, you no longer have to buy the Razer Phone 2 online or visit a big-box store -- it could be available at a carrier shop around the corner. AT&T has announced that it will carry the gaming-oriented smartphone both online and at retail starting on November 16th. You'll have to visit a handful of stores in Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle if you want to buy the device in-person on launch day, but it beats having to buy the device from the network sight unseen. And importantly, the carrier arrangement could soften the blow to your bank account.

Razer Phone 2 review: Strictly for gamers

When the Razer Phone made its debut last year, it was one of the first modern gaming phones to hit the market. While it may not seem like it here in the US, there's a growing appetite for hardcore mobile gaming, especially in Asia, where multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) titles are all the rage. To meet this demand, Xiaomi came out with the Black Shark and the Black Shark Helo in 2018. ASUS followed suit with the ROG Phone, which has so many accessories -- a gamepad, a hand-held dock and even an external fan -- that it borders on ridiculous. Not to be left out, Razer just released its second smartphone, the Razer Phone 2. The Razer Phone 2 looks and feels very similar to the original, with a few tweaks here and there. The company wanted to focus on bringing its phone closer to big-name flagships. By making it sleeker and more robust, Razer hopes to draw gamers away from their Pixels and Galaxies. Like the original, there's no question that the Razer Phone 2 excels as a gaming phone. The problem is, that it's still not quite the flagship rival it wants to be.

Last year, Razer introduced its first-ever smartphone and, as you might've guessed, it was built for gamers. With a 120Hz screen refresh rate, a gorgeous display and a powerful processor, the Razer Phone was definitely impressive when it came to trouncing virtual opponents on-the-go. Yet, it remained a tough sell for the mainstream audience, thanks, in part, to its less-than-stellar camera. Today, the company is ready to announce the Razer Phone 2, which promises to have addressed all the shortcomings of the original, and more. It's not only a better gaming phone, proclaims Razer, it's a handset worthy of flagship status too.

Razer is expected to unveil its second phone today, and another leak has given us a more detailed look at what's to come. Last month, leaked images showed that the Razer Phone 2 would look very much like its predecessor, with a couple of exceptions, but a prematurely posted product listing from Amazon Italy has now laid out a few of the phone's specs.

Razer is expected to unveil its second phone on October 10th

Razer sent out invitations today for an October 10th event where it's expected to unveil its Razer Phone 2. The invite doesn't say as much, but the company noted in a financial report last month that it was working on a follow up to its Razer Phone and some reported images of the new phone leaked earlier this week. If it is launching its latest gaming-geared smartphone, it's doing so just one day after Google reveals its newest Pixel phones and a day before Samsung's upcoming Galaxy event. That's a lot of phones in one week. But don't forget, there's also a Microsoft Surface event, a Huawei launch and likely a OnePlus debut in October as well. Hope you're ready for a lot of new gadgets.
