Resident Evil: Revelations was originally set to take place on "a floating mansion," Capcom community manager Seth Killian revealed in the new Capcom-Unity podcast. "That was the concept. It was just a mansion at sea," Killian said. "Capcom USA forced them to change it to a cruise ship."Of course, the "Queen Zenobia" cruise ship is appointed just like a mansion on the inside, so functionally the only difference is that it makes even the slightest bit of sense now. If you'd like to see the suspiciously palatial interior of the Queen Zenobia for yourself, a demo is available on the 3DS eShop.Update: Seth Killian confirmed that it was a joke. Context!

Having played the Resident Evil Revelations demo, we can confirm that Capcom's 3DS survival horror throwback has impressive graphics. We just don't know if the real thing is as impressive as the screens released today. For one thing, the 3DS doesn't display 800 x 480 images.

3DS demos have finally arrived in North America! Or, at least, they will in a couple of hours when the eShop updates. You'll have the opportunity to check out Capcom's classic-style Resident Evil Revelations at no risk -- other than the usual risk of terror-soaked pants, we suppose. In WiiWare news, remember when Interplay was going to revive Stonekeep for WiiWare? Well, that's happened. You can see the results above.

Downloadable 3DS demos were promised as part of the last big firmware update. They started showing up in Japan in December, and they're finally making their way to North America, starting with tomorrow's demo of Resident Evil: Revelations. Next week, on January 26, Sega will follow with a demo of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, allowing you to satisfy your curiosity about the mascot minigame collection without anyone else ever knowing. Upcoming demos coming at unspecified dates include Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D and Rayman Origins.

The Nintendo Direct conference was ... light on news. However, Nintendo did announce that the first downloadable demos for retail 3DS games are hitting the Japanese eShop today! The selection includes Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, Resident Evil: Revelations, Rhythm Thief, and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D. All of those games are expected to launch in the US around the same time as their Japanese releases, save Theatrhythm, which hasn't been announced stateside. We're just going to be optimistic and believe demos are on the way soon. Of course, we were optimistic about the amount of news we thought would come out of this thing, as well, and that didn't get us very far.

Resident Evil: Revelations is a game coming to the 3DS. This much we know. Beyond that, the latest trailer has us flummoxed. Who are all these people? What's happening? What's up with that one dude's Flock of Seagulls haircut? All these questions, and more, we leave to you.

The monsters of Resident Evil: Revelations will arrive in Europe on January 27, and they'll bring another monster along with them: the 3DS-enlarging Circle Pad Pro. Nintendo UK announced today that the 3DS attachment will be bundled with a "special limited edition" package of Capcom's horror game. Revelations will also be sold separately. This is the first official announcement of a release date for the peripheral outside of Japan. Capcom USA has shown the game to US press with the attachment, indicating future availability in North America. Capcom USA also said there were no plans for a Circle Pad Pro/Revelations bundle here.

What do you do when your competition is busy undercutting your portable game offerings with $1 apps? If you're Nintendo and Capcom, your strategy is to aggressively run in the opposite direction (coincidentally, that is our favorite Resident Evil strategy). Next year's Resident Evil: Revelations is an impressive, console-esque experience that is notably as expensive as a console game. GameStop lists the 3DS title for $50, and that doesn't include the $10 Circle Pad attachment. "Resident Evil Revelations is an all new Resident Evil title with over 20 hours of gameplay, and cutscenes beautifully rendered in fear-inducing 3D," a Capcom spokesperson told Kotaku via email. "A true console experience on a handheld device, Resident Evil Revelations is an epic title that offers both a single-player campaign for that classic survival horror gaming experience, and an additional RAID mode that can be played cooperatively or single player. To handle all of that data Resident Evil Revelations requires a 4GB cartridge, resulting in a higher price point." The larger 4GB cartridge brings back (mostly bad) memories of cartridge-based consoles past: the Genesis, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64. Bigger experiences require bigger storage and, in turn, a bigger price tag. Bringing console-level experiences to portable platforms is one way of competing with the stampeding smartphone army, but even higher portable game prices is one revelation we can do without.

Capcom has learned its lesson. During its Gamer's Day event in San Francisco, the company confirmed that Resident Evil: Revelations will allow players to wipe their save data, should they choose. For the unaware, this lack of functionality in Capcom's previous 3DS title, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, caused quite an uproar. Admittedly, it's possible to wipe the save data, it's just extremely complicated. In addition to that news nugget, Capcom also revealed that Resident Evil: Revelations will support the Circle Pad Pro, but currently has no plans to offer a bundle. The Circle Pad Pro is currently slated to launch in Japan on December 10. Nintendo has yet to reveal launch details for North America. Capcom had a working unit on hand at Gamer's Day -- you can read all about it here. Resident Evil: Revelations launches on February 7.

So, you know that 3DS circle pad attachment Capcom's greatest scientists toiled over? Well, get this: Famitsu reveals (via Andriasang) that it'll be used for aiming in Resident Evil: Revelations. For the recently unfrozen cavemen out there, the left pad will be used for movement, while the expansion on the right will be used for aiming and rotating your character. Also, we destroyed the dinosaur scourge and display their bones in museums as a warning to other massive lizards. You're welcome. Resident Evil: Revelations launches on February 7 in North America.

  • Capcom wants to violate your expectations, but in a good way

Capcom has never been one to shy away from aggressively utilizing its core intellectual properties, however iteration often translates to evolution, which can be interpreted as abandonment by the minds of die-hard fans. But, that might not be such a bad thing. "We think that certainly some people's expectations will be violated, but that's, in our minds, a good thing," said producer Masachika Kawata, speaking on the Resident Evil series during an interview with Gamasutra. "It will hopefully get people to play something that they weren't expecting." Resident Evil has arguably seen more drastic paradigm shifts than any other Capcom franchise, with the upcoming Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City fully embracing the shooter seeds planted by Resident Evils 4 and 5. Kawata views the situation as one of diversity rather than exclusion, however, implying that the Resident Evil franchise has expanded to accommodate many different genres underneath its IP umbrella, including shooters. Of course, survival horror is still an integral part of Resident Evil's brand image, and Kawata's own Resident Evil: Revelations is said to be "core-fan focused" in a way that makes it similar to Capcom zombie romps of yore. Still, every relationship needs a little spark now and again: "I'm thinking that if we would have brought out all these Resident Evil titles, and they were all focused on survival horror, absolutely I think people would be really sick of Resident Evil."

Capcom's second 3DS Resident Evil adventure, the classic-style Resident Evil Revelations, will be available in North America on February 7, 2012, the publisher announced today. While Jill, Chris, and their new BSAA cohorts will be surrounded by the environs of a scary cruise ship, you'll have the opportunity to surround your 3DS in an exclusive case if you pre-order from GameStop. The newly announced pre-order bonus bears "an image that changes in the sunlight," a fitting tie-in for such a bright, sunny game. OK, maybe it's just a fun gimmick, one that makes the 3DS look really creepy.%Gallery-135703%

  • Nintendo 3DS circle pad attachment coming to Japan on Dec. 10

In the midst of revealing a new color for its latest handheld, the 3DS, Nintendo also let slip some other interesting information during its pre-Tokyo Game Show presser this afternoon in Japan. For one, the bizarro second analog nub will be arriving at Japanese retailers starting this December 10, and it'll run customers ¥1500 ($19.50). Moreover, the Japenese console manufacturer revealed several titles that'll support the attachment, kicking off with Monster Hunter Tri G on Dec. 10th. Following Monster Hunter comes Biohazard Revelations (Resident Evil: Revelations outside of Japan), Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, Ace Combat 3D: Cross Rumble, Dynasty Warriors VS, and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. And finally, the "Slidepad" will require a single AAA battery for use, which indicates to us that it won't bolster the battery of the 3DS it's attached to. We're making sad faces as hard as we can right now.

Capcom narrowed the release windows for two of its upcoming games today in GamesCom fact sheets. Resident Evil: Revelations, the 3DS Resident Evil that hasn't been the subject of a scandal yet, and Asura's Wrath, CyberConnect2's dramatic, QTE-filled, Hindu-themed action game, will both arrive in early 2012. It's a pretty weird pairing -- the portable, expressly traditional Resident Evil game and the HD game that reminds us of a Dragon Ball Z spinoff set in India. Along with these date updates, we have new screenshots of both games. Enjoy the cognitive dissonance from our mashing together of old IP and weird new IP by opening both galleries in new tabs and flipping between them. • Resident Evil Revelations preview: Drained

    by

    06.13.2011

My first potential action in Resident Evil: Revelations was simple and nostalgic: drain the bath tub? Well it did appear as if something was in the water -- at least that's what the text box before the question had told me. "Eff it!" I thought, caution to the wind. "Let's drain the bastard." And the murky tub full of liquid drained. Lo and behold, I'd found a screwdriver. Just the screwdriver I needed to unscrew a cover, so I could solve a minigame and finally open a door! Is it just me, or does it suddenly feel suspiciously like 1997? My feelings on Resident Evil: Revelations are succinctly summed up in the scenario described above. The Jill Valentine led other 3DS Resident Evil game is a brand new romp through a very old game world: the world of games like Resident Evil 1 and 2. It's a puzzle-riddled, ammo managing, archaic retreat to a land of gameplay mechanics that may be enticing to some old-school RE fans, but sure didn't get my heart pounding.%Gallery-125699%

In our line of work we hear, "I can't talk about that just yet," fairly often. It's a necessary evil of the job. We do what we can, ya know? So when we stopped by Capcom's E3 2011 booth today to play Resident Evil: Revelations, and a zombie started ravaging Jill Valentine's face, we asked the Capcom rep: "Hey, what's the melee button?" "We're not talking about melee just yet." ...Oh Capcom, you're adorable.

In the words of Wesker himself, nobody could have ever predicted "it" would spread so fast. We assume he's referring to the Resident Evil franchise, which will see five (five) different releases this year. See footage of them all in the Resident Evil 15th anniversary trailer after the break. One thing to note: Both Code: Veronica X HD and Resident Evil 4 HD are promoted with the Xbox Live "Games on Demand" logo beneath their titles (as opposed to the Xbox Live Arcade logo). It's possible that Capcom is opting to distribute the titles under the Games on Demand platform in North America (where they will be download-only) in order to bypass the 2GB size limit placed on XBLA titles.

Capcom announced today that a playable demo of Resident Evil: Revelations will be included with Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, which is set to launch on 3DS in Japan this June and elsewhere sometime during summer. The Revelations demo puts you in control of longtime series star Jill Valentine, who's trapped on an ocean liner beset by you-know-what. Don't be too hasty in calling them vile, hungry and monstrous things -- it's just that the cruise ship buffet shuts down at 8PM. Capcom promises there'll be more (revelatory) details during this year's E3. %Gallery-109631%

We can't think of many handheld games capable of filling us with terror whilst on-the-go, but some of the baddies seen in these screens for Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D and Revelations look like they'll be downright unsettling. Especially once they start, you know, walking out of the screen.
