"When we worked on the 3DS version, we were completely targeting the 3DS. We didn't start in HD, scale down, and now we're scaling up – we worked to the exact 3DS specs," Tsukasa Takenaka, producer on Resident Evil: Revelations HD told Joystiq at a recent Capcom event. "Development was also going on Mercenaries so the team wouldn't have had the capacity to be working on anything above the resolution of the 3DS screen, just to have the assets. At the time there was no plan for consoles – the console version was only decided after the 3DS launch and after we received fan and critic feedback on the game."Takenaka said that the port was largely driven by fan feedback, specifically from two segments of people: those who wanted to play it on the big screen, and those who didn't own a 3DS.%Gallery-178780%

  • Report: Resident Evil: Revelations features off-TV play on Wii U

The Wii U version of Resident Evil: Revelations will make use of the platform's unique hardware, allowing the full game to be played on the GamePad. The latest issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine reveals this tidbit, according to Nintendo Insider. The issue is due on UK newsstands in two days. The port also features Wii U Pro Controller support, and GamePad touchscreen-based inventory management. In ONM's interview, producer Tsukasa Takenaka says "There's a joke going around in Japan at the moment about using Off TV Play to play your Wii U games on the Bullet Train, as long as you get on of the seats with a power outlet, so we wanted to make sure Bullet Train play was possible with Revelations."Revelations is also coming out on PS3, Xbox, and PC; those won't have off-TV play for obvious reasons. It was originally released on 3DS, where it only had off-TV play.

  • 'A few too many' Resident Evil games in past two years, producer says

Capcom learned a few lessons about market saturation over the past two years, Resident Evil: Revelations producer Masachika Kawata told Video Gamer. In terms of Resident Evil launches, Kawata said, "I think certainly looking at the last year or two, there probably were a few too many."Additionally, Kawata said that Capcom "learned last year that putting on a lot of titles would not necessarily win over gamers."Capcom dropped four Resident Evil games throughout 2011 and 2012: The Mercenaries 3D, Revelations, Operation Raccoon City and 6. Next in line is Resident Evil: Revelations, the 3DS game, coming to Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii U in May.Kawata noted that altering the Resident Evil launch pattern alone wouldn't make the games better, but it could be part of a solution."At the same time, I don't think we should just stagger them out artificially because that's the solution to the problem we have." he said. "We should always start by asking how do we make the games better. And if the solution to making the games better is to have a more staggered release than we've had recently then that's something we'll do. But we'll do it for that reason and not just for flipping what we've done already."

  • Capcom: Resident Evil Revelations reception a 'signpost' for series future

Resident Evil: Revelations producer Masachika Kawata says Capcom will closely monitor the feedback surrounding this May's home console port of the game, and gauge reaction to determine exactly where to take the series in the future."I think we'll get a lot of input from the fanbase and the media on what it means for Resident Evil, and what it could mean for the future of the series," Kawata told Eurogamer. "We'll definitely be looking at that as a signpost for where we need to be going next." After Revelations, Kawata envisions Capcom focusing more on "the horror aspect and fear in the series." Resident Evil: Revelations first launched on the 3DS in January 2012 and currently has an 82 on Metacritic. Though Resident Evil: Revelations is "definitely a success" in Capcom's eyes, Kawata says, the publisher would have liked to see more sales – but isn't that always the hope in business? "Given the large development costs we had on the 3DS version, we would have liked to have even a little more sales than we did in the end. But that doesn't mean we saw it as a failure by any means," he said.Resident Evil: Revelations will launch on the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC on May 21.

If you're planning to splash out on Resident Evil: Revelations, the place to do it is Japan. Capcom is offering a special edition which includes the game and a US Agency glow-in-the-dark replica of Jill's watch, all for a whoa-really ¥39,900 (around $440). If you're willing to put up ¥42,000 (around $460) you can chuck in a game soundtrack and BSAA card case.If you live closer to home and prefer to not spend hundreds of dollars on a single game, Amazon pre-orders are now available for PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. The port is also coming to PC, and arrives on all platforms on May 21.

  • Resident Evil: Revelations isn't on Vita because of its itty-bitty screen

Capcom is bringing Resident Evil: Revelations to everything except Vita because of the portable's screen format size and lack of surround sound. Those were the reasons given by Capcom product manager Mike Lunn on the PlayStation Blog, following the news of the 3DS game's impending arrival on PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U.Responding to a comment querying the lack of a Vita port, Lunn said, "When we were developing Revelations for new platforms we really wanted to hone in on the experience you get with a large format screen, surround sound, etc. This type of setup really helps players get sucked into the horror vibe and enjoy the game to its fullest extent."That's all good and well, except for how Revelations was initially made for the 3DS and its not-so-large screens. Lunn went on to address that in another comment."3DS and PS-vita infrastructure let alone developing games for them are extremely different beasts," Lunn noted. "Even just the screens as you mention are completely different resolutions/functions."Capcom's reasoning aside, that leaves the Vita without a Resident Evil game compared to two on its rival handheld, so we can understand frustrations. On the plus side, a lot more people get to play the popular 3DS game when it hits other platforms on May 21.

Resident Evil: Revelations, the 3DS game, is officially launching on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U as a full retail title for $50 on May 21 in the US, and May 24 in Europe. Revelations will also be available to download on PC and PS3 on day one, with digital versions of Xbox 360 and Wii U to follow.Revelations hit North American 3DS systems on February 7, 2012, as a survival horror, single-player madhouse with co-op Raid mode. Or, more fittingly to the plot, madboat. The revamped version includes fresh HD graphics, Hunk as a new playable character in Raid mode, a new enemy, a harder difficulty, and brand new weapons and custom parts in Raid mode.We previously heard murmurs about a console version of Revelations, but Wii U and PC are still a nice surprise. • Achievements suggest 'Resident Evil: Revelations Unveiled Edition' for 360

Back in November, Korean ratings board GRB posted listings for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Resident Evil: Revelations; a port that Capcom has yet to officially announce in any capacity. Now, purported achievements for the 360 version have surfaced, listing the game's full title as Resident Evil: Revelations Unveiled Edition. The achievements themselves reveal little, beyond the fact that both Campaign and Raid modes will make the jump from handheld to console, should this all shake out. As intrigued as we are, the idea of a 3DS to console port brings up many questions, though the fact that the word "revelations" is spelled correctly is promising. We've reached out to Capcom for comment.

  • Resident Evil: Revelations listed for Xbox 360, PS3 by Korean ratings board

Resident Evil: Revelations may be about to reveal itself on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, if a listing on Korean ratings board GRB is accurate. According to GRB, Capcom Entertainment Korea applied for the survival-horror shooter to be rated for 360 and PS3. Revelations came out for 3DS earlier this year. Capcom sees Revelations as something similar to the survival horror of the original Resident Evil. After a mixed critical response to the more action-oriented Resident Evil 6, it may well be good timing for Revelations to come to home consoles.

  • NPD: Kid Icarus Uprising sold 140K units in March, Resident Evil Revelations sold 122K

The NPD has informed Joystiq that Kid Icarus: Uprising sold approximately 140,000 copies in the US in March. Last night, analyst Anita Frazier reported that "In a list of the top 10 SKU's for the month (as opposed to top titles as listed here), 3DS Kid Icarus: Uprising would have been among the top selling individual SKU's for the month of March." In other words, Kid Icarus was one of the ten best-selling games on a single platform. It's not a Mario-level sales explosion or anything, but certainly not bad for a 3DS debut, and not bad for eight days of sales. By the way, Kid Icarus: Uprising is wonderful.Meanwhile, February release Resident Evil: Revelations sold around 122,000 in March, the NPD told us. All we know about its February performance is that it was somewhere in the top 25 games.Update: We're asking the NPD for clarification regarding the Revelations sales numbers, as questions have arisen as to the possibility that it could be life-to-date rather than March. We'll update accordingly when we hear back.

  • Capcom's Kawata on bringing Resident Evil back to its roots on 3DS

When a new platform hits the market, designers inevitably start thinking about how to exploit all of the new possibilities at their disposal. For producer Masachika Kawata, it was a chance to take Resident Evil back to its roots. "We all agreed that, this time around, we wanted to make a scary Resident Evil similar to the original," Kawata said during a GDC talk that broke down the development of the recent 3DS survival horror game. That might bring a slightly rueful smile to the faces of longtime fans. Resident Evil 4 gets a lot of love among mainstream gamers and critics; but by admitting that he wanted to make a "scary" game, Kawata seems to be tacitly admitting what many older fans have felt for a while now -- Resident Evil had become an action series.

  • NPD's top 25 includes at least eight 3DS games

No 3DS games sold enough in the US to place in the top ten last month, according to NPD data. But 3DS sales were happening just under the surface, with many 3DS games making it into the (undisclosed) top 25 games of February. The NPD told Joystiq that "some examples" of the 3DS titles that made the list include Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, FIFA Soccer, Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games -- the last two on that list being February releases. That's ... a significant portion of the top 25. It's also evidence of a reasonably engaged 3DS install base, and therefore stiff competition for the PS Vita, which came out in February. The Vita's Uncharted: Golden Abyss placed somewhere in the top 20 (at least in retail; Vita games also have digital sales not charted by NPD).

Super Mario 3D Land director Koichi Hayashida will present a postmortem talk at GDC entitled "Thinking in 3D: The Development of Super Mario 3D Land." Attendees will be required to cross a pit of moving blocks while being chased by evil purple versions of themselves in order to attend.Or, what will actually happen is that Hayashida will discuss developing for 3D devices, and "share development philosophies learned from Mario creator and legendary Nintendo designer, Shigeru Miyamoto."Another 3DS-centric talk is "Revealing the Truth About Resident Evil Revelations," presented by producer Masachika Kawata. And Cave COO Mikio Watanabe will discuss "Retro and Japanese Social Games on Smartphones," bringing attention to the company's recent endeavors in porting crazy shmups to iOS.

The discussion's been dominated by box art gaffes, let this trailer remind you that there is a game inside the RE: Revelations box, and it looks cool. We probably shouldn't have mentioned the box art thing here when emphasizing the game. We definitely shouldn't have brought it up again after that.

  • Iwata Asks about Resident Evil: Revelations, 'forced logic'

The latest in the ongoing Iwata Asks series has the Nintendo exec inquiring about the development of Resident Evil: Revelations with the team at Capcom. The lengthy interview covers a wide range of topics, from the inspiration for the 3DS iterations of Resident Evil to precisely what the essence of Resident Evil is.When asked this very question, the team mentioned a word coined internally at Capcom, "bioreal." Essentially, anything that happens in Resident Evil title has to make sense within the universe Capcom has built. For example, a zombie might be reanimated by a virus but not, as Iwata pointed out, by magic. That said, the team admitted they don't concern themselves too much with "biorealism," and often include more fantastic events as development draws on.One of the more candid moments in the interview came courtesy of assistant producer Tsukasa Takenaka. "Capcom is always like that," he said, "we make the main events interesting and then fill in the gaps with forced logic." Even Iwata was taken aback, saying, "Ohh... You just come right out and say it?" Check out the full Iwata Asks article for more on Resident Evil: Revelations and its focus on bringing horror back to the series.

  • Resident Evil 'Revelaitons' misprint makes it to retail [Update: Capcom offers statement, replacement]

Capcom made an embarrassing printing error on the spine of the Resident Evil: Revelations box sent to reviewers -- one made more embarrassing by the "revelaiton" today that it's still on the version of the art sent to retailers in advance of Tuesday's release.Reader Zach shared this picture of the stock at the Prescott, AZ store, showing "Revelaitons" all the way down -- Joystiq has since confirmed the error with the store. For some, we're sure this mistake will be at worst a slight deterrent to purchase. For others, what was once a reasonably interesting 3DS item now seems like a fascinating rare collectible.Update: A Capcom representative offered us the following statement: "The initial shipment of Resident Evil Revelations had been sent to retailers in North America with the spelling error. Subsequent shipments of the title are being repackaged and will have the corrected spelling. Customers who have been affected by the misspelling on the Resident Evil Revelations packaging can contact Capcom Customer Service at 650-350-6700 or accounts@capcom.com and a new insert for the front of box will be sent." So, like the previous Okami snafu, Capcom will offer replacement packaging to any who want it.

  • Nintendo Slide Pad for 3DS review

First impressions stay with you. Take our first look at the Nintendo 3DS, for example. Our first thought? "Hey, where's the second analog stick?" Given all the gaming genres that benefit from it, it's almost unthinkable for a major portable console to launch without an extra analog stick. It's like Mario without the mustache, Charlie Sheen without the tiger blood or Donald Trump without the dead marsupial or whatever the heck that thing is on top of his head. Unfortunately, Nintendo decided to release the 3DS without that second analog. So folks who want to get their dual stick groove on right out of the box can only hope the Big N has a change of heart when it eventually releases the 3DSi Lite XL Advance. (We're just kidding about the name, of course, but you never know...) In the meantime, Nintendo's got a peace offering of sorts to tide by 3DS owners: the Circle Pad Pro. Slated for a February 2012 release in the US, we got our grubby hands on its Japanese equivalent, the "Slide Pad" during a trip to the Land of the Rising Sun. So is it worth the $20 price of admission? Read on to find out.

  • Resident Evil: Revelations' price lowered to $39.99 before launch

Resident Evil: Revelations was announced to have a $50 price tag last year, mostly because of its 4GB cartridge, which is 2GB larger than most 3DS games'. After "weeks of effort," Capcom has dropped that price to $40 -- standard for the 3DS -- without infringing on the cart size, Capcom's Brett Elston announced.Elston said he thinks the title is still worth $50, which is why it's so great that Nintendo's Circle Pad Pro, which we feel is necessary to properly enjoy Revelations, will be an extra $20.
