  • Entertainers pivot to video as coronavirus shutters clubs

The Coronavirus pandemic is quickly converting America into a nation of shut-ins, resulting in the closing of nightclubs, dance halls and comedy rooms. Like many other professions, this has put thousands of performers, musicians and stand-up comics in dire financial straits. But as the classic adage states, "the show must go on" -- especially for entertainers whose livelihoods depend on them getting onstage in front of a crowd. As the Dropkick Murphys (DKM) showed the world on Tuesday, the show can go on, even if there's no audience around.

The Dropkick Murphys have been playing St. Patrick's Day shows for 24 years. This year the show, like most things, will be a little different. In an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19, the band is canceling its regular concert but will livestream a free performance tomorrow at 7pm ET.

  • Vindictus introduces PvP changes, new clothing, and the deadly Cross Gun

You know what sucks about crossbows? They're so slow. Sure, they make a nice thrum as you fire off a bolt at whoever is about to die a pointy death, but then there's the whole reloading process and it's really just not quite action-combaty enough, is it? Vindictus is sorting this appalling deficiency by introducing the Cross Gun, a rapid fire ranged weapon available to folks playing as Kai. While that is impressive in its own right, the Cross Gun is not all that's coming to the game this month. Nexon America has plans for new open PvP death matches, custom clothing options, and a number of in-game events throughout March. The new PvP mode will be open to players regardless of their guild membership. One of the inbound clothing options is a St. Patrick's Day outfit, for those of you who want to look a little luckier whilst slaughterfying your opponents. Skip below the cut for a video teasing the March updates. [Source: Nexon America press release.]

  • DC Universe Online gets lucky with GU24

What are Mxyleprechauns? Oh, only the most feared entities on St. Patrick's Day if you happen to be in DCUO's neck of the woods. The seasonal event is once again live as Game Update 24 comes to the game. GU24 is more than just a touching reunion with Mister Mxyzptlk, however. The update creates a new alert from the Batcave inner sanctum raid, adds optional character outlines, improves the mail system, and allows for the purchase of more slot upgrades. And while they might not be as sexy as the above bullet points, bug fixes and balance changes fill out a rather lengthy list on the patch notes page. Get cracking, superheroes, because those interdimensional beings aren't going to banish themselves!

  • Indie Royale's St. Patrick's Day bundle is partially blind for now

Indie Royale's St. Patrick's Day bundle is semi-blind -- but don't worry, it's more like one of those trips to the eye doctor where you leave wearing giant, ugly, flimsy plastic sunglasses and are told to not look directly at the sun for the afternoon. It gets better, is what we're saying.Indie Royale has opened pre-orders, at a $4 minimum, for four slightly mysterious titles in its St. Patrick's Day bundle, the actual day of which is Saturday, March 17. If you plan on being even a tad sober any time on Saturday, the games are teased as follows:"An explosive FPS with a future-leaning setting," "next up the flagpole is a jaunty Windows and Mac adventure game," "a brainy Steam-enabled Windows and Mac title 'dispensing' RTS action," "an acclaimed satirical platformer, plus a bonus DRM-free Windows RPG overhead shooter from the same creator."Pre-orders and those who pay over the minimum once the bundle is released will get O.S.T.: Original Soundtrack from Daniel Capo.

  • DCUO puts Valentine's Day on hold, plans seasonal events

Roses are red, violets are blue, Valentine's Day will be back eventually in DCU... O. Fortunately for those disappointed with the lackluster event last year, SOE agreed with the general sentiment and promised that the future version will be the snugglebunny event of the season. However, it looks like the new, improved Love Day feats won't make it to the game in time for February 14th. That said, the team is already focusing on several upcoming events to coincide with each of the major seasons. "Over the next cycle, starting with summer, we will be adding the following: Boss fights to Summer, Winter, and Spring, and open world content to Fall," Creative Director Jens Andersen writes. The next scheduled event in DCUO is for March's St. Patrick's Day. Hopefully, by this time next year DCUO will be in a more loving mood with Valentine's Day 2.0!

Chris Cao: DCUO's Update 2 is all about "chance"

We heard some tantalizing details of what Sony Online Entertainment has planned for DC Universe Online's March patch a few weeks ago when Game Director Chris Cao and Art Director and Mark Anderson sat down on the Stickam chat to offer a teaser of what players could expect. Following up, we had a chat with Cao to find out some more specific details on what exactly our superheroes can expect coming in March. According to Cao, the primary theme for this update is "chance," which is reflected both in our chance to face off against The Penguin as boss and in the addition of Two-Face/Harvey Dent in Legends PvP play and as an instance character. That fifth-dimensional trickster Mister Mxyzptlk is likewise being introduced to the game as part of a holiday event themed around St. Patrick's Day. We knew most of this from the Stickam chat; that's why we went digging deeper for the scoop on DC Universe Online's development. Check it out behind the break! %Gallery-50201%

  • A few apps on sale for St. Patrick's Day

Erin go bragh-se the App Store today, because there are a few cheap games out there for the holiday! Real-time strategy/action mashup Legendary Wars (as seen back at Macworld) is on sale for just 99 cents. Stoneship (another Daily App choice) is also on sale for just 99 cents, as is the award-winning Osmos. Comixology has a few Green Lantern and Green Arrow comics on sale for just a buck each -- good deal if you've got a new iPad 2 to read them on. EA (surprise!) has games back on sale, including Scrabble, Tetris and its MMA title. Lifelike Cards HD is also on sale for just a buck. Putting apps on sale for holidays seems to be the growing tradition on the App Store, so there are probably a few more out there (and I'll bet a few developers will start up their sales this weekend after seeing these out this week). If you see something good, let us know in the comments below! And from all of us at TUAW, have a safe and happy St. Patrick's Day!

It's spring in Norrath, but if you're out adventuring in Velious, you might not realize it. Thankfully, Brell Serillis is helping us remember that sometimes we need a break from all the snow and ice, and what better way to celebrate than pouring a nice foamy mug of Tumpy Tonic or Minotaur Hero Brew! That's right, EverQuest II's festival of Brewday is back, and in this week's Tattered Notebook, we're going to search for the best brews, don our beer goggles, and even do a little cow tipping. Read on for a look at some of the quirky quests and boozy rewards that come with Brell's spring holiday.

Thanks to a webcast earlier this week from Game Director Chris Cao and Art Director Mark Anderson, we now have an idea of what's to come in the March DC Universe Online patch, also known as Update 2. As anyone who plays the game can tell you, there are certainly a number of fixes and updates that need to be made: PvP exploits, UI tweaks and fixes, grouping mechanic help, raids and more. As such, I thought it would be a good time to dive into some of the things that Cao and Anderson mentioned during their video chat and take a closer look at what we can expect and at how these changes may bring some good and potential bad into the game. So gather up your ideas and opinions on DC Universe Online's upcoming Update 2, caped crusaders, and let's get rolling!

Rovio's "Mighty Eagle," Peter Vesterbacka, announced during his day-one GDC panel that -- unsurprisingly -- all major holidays will eventually be worked into themed updates for the company's mega-hit Angry Birds, including the upcoming St. Patrick's Day. According to Vesterbacka, the new content will be "very green" and "filled with more pigs than ever." The millions of Angry Birds addicts should be tickled pink by this news. Speaking of addicts, Vesterbacka says that you (yes, you!) really like the option to buy the Mighty Eagle power-up. He reports that 40 percent of all players who've purchased Angry Birds since the "smart bomb" style, level-skipping item was introduced last December have bought it at least once -- at 99 cents a pop.

No globally-recognized holiday can escape attention from Media Molecule's DIY platformer, LittleBigPlanet, don't ya know? This week, the PS3 version of the game will receive a free St. Patrick's Day-themed costume, which turns your adorable sack-vatar into a reddish-orange-bearded leprechaun. That's really exciting news if you're a fan of Lucky Charms -- but really terrifying news if you're familiar with Warwick Davis' acclaimed psychological thriller series. We hate to derail this post's train of thought, but we've been absorbed by the rich mythos of Leprechaun after reading that Wikipedia entry. Did you guys know there have been six installments in the Leprechaun franchise? It's true: Leprechaun, Leprechaun 2, Leprechaun 3, Leprechaun 4: In Space, Leprechaun: In the Hood and Leprechaun: Back to tha Hood. This is not a joke. Those are all real movies, which real people really made.

  • The Daily Grind: Your favorite spring holiday event?

For many people this weekend will be a time of chocolate and seeing family. For others, this may well prove the nice and quiet time (and days off from work or school, depending) to get in some extra MMO time. Lord of the Rings Online has the Spring Festival, World of Warcraft has Noblegarden. We've recently had Bristlebane's Day in EverQuest II, and there were St. Patrick's events in everything from FusionFall onwards. That said, all of these events are vying for you to log in and enjoy - to give you a bit of spring-tinged cheer; but which one has consistently proven to be your favorite? Which game do you think has the most awesome, well-scripted, fun spring events?

If you're looking for something to do this St. Patrick's Day (other than the usual projectile vomiting of chartreuse-hued beverages), PopCap has a frugal suggestion -- starting today and running until March 24, the casual gaming juggernaut is offering Big Money, a title which usually retails for £14.95, for, well, no money. If clearing boards of similarly-colored clusters of coins sounds up your alley, you can now download the full title for free. If not, why not be a dear and pass this story along to your Bejeweled-obsessed grandmother? She'd probably love to hear from you.[Via IGN]

  • Tabula Rasa goes green, unofficially

Another Monday, and another Weekend Wrapup from the Tabula Rasa community team. This week, in addition to highlighting the usual slew of events, like this weekend's Friday Night Fights winners and the new Tabulacast, they also featured two new pieces of fan fiction which actually prove to be of surprisingly good quality. As always, they (and we!) encourage you to send in some of your own original material. The Tabula Rasa universe is still not nearly as fleshed out as it could be, so every bit of writing can have the affect of changing people's view of the game world. And of course, there's always St. Patrick's Day. While the AFS does not formally celebrate this day of Irish pride (who cares who is Irish when a race of alien jerkoffs are trying to commit xenocide?), the GMs will be making appearances at random across all four servers today to deliver green dye as a sort of unofficial holiday goodie. Granted, green isn't quite as rare a color as white or black these days, but who are we to look a gift horse in the mouth? And remember, if you're looking to truly maximize your green for the day - think Forean.

Despite the inability to get actually drunk over virtual alcohol, there are MMOs celebrating St. Patrick's Day. If you're looking for the biggest virtual parties this side of Norrath (and on that other side, too), the MMO-obsessed over at Massively have you covered with a handy guide of events for the week. Conspicuously absent from St. Patrick's Day celebrations is World of Warcraft, but if you happen to find some drunken dwarves in Azeroth (or other ad hoc festivities), be sure to snap a photo and send to WoW Insider.

Though St. Patrick's Day isn't officially celebrated in Azeroth (Brewfest being the closest thing in October), players have to make do with their own in-game celebrations. Warlock Faust decided to get his holiday on early by climbing to the top of an Inn to get this screenshot. Not the craziest thing that's going to happen this day, I'm sure.Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? Because we'd love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next! Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. We prefer full screen shots without the UI showing. And please, no more sunsets. This means you. I'm not kidding, yours is not the exception. No, really. Sigh.%Gallery-1816%
