So, this title has been out for a little bit, but we've had our hands full with other stuff lately. Until last week, this game went relatively untouched. Things change, but one sad truth remains: I suck at Tekken 5. What's worse is that when I reverted back to Virtua Fighter 5 after playing this PSN title, I sucked at that too. It seems a friend was right -- you can only play one 3D fighter at a time. In any case, here are some review numbers given to Tekken 5 by some big sites... our review will follow after you click that "continue reading" link. • Top 5 on PSP: Fighting

The PSP has been selling quite well recently and I figured some new PSP owners may not know what great games the system has to offer. With that in mind, every day this week we'll feature a new genre and list the top 5 games (according to metareviews), so no matter what you're into, you'll have some idea of what games you should own. Today the focus is on Fighting games, a genre that used to be one of the biggest things in gaming, but has lost some popularity with time. I'm still a big fighting game fan though, so I had to make this list. Top 5 Fighting games on PSP Tekken: Dark Ressurrection WWE Smackdown! vs. RAW 2006 Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX Def Jam Fight for NY: The Takeover Guilty Gear Judgement This list doesn't include import games like Bleach or Naruto, so my personal list of best fighting games would be different. But what do you think about these 5 games? What fighting games aren't on this list that you think every PSP owner should have? If you missed it, you can check out our previous top 5 game lists: Action Racing Sports [Data Via Metacritic]

  • Tekken 6 -- coming to an arcade probably far away from you!

I said this to one of the folks who took the time to shoot me a message on the PlayStation Network (NDoerrFans, if you're interested), but before I gave Virtua Fighter 5 the ol' test, I had only played Soul Calibur as far as 3D fighters go -- and I hated them. Raised on Street Fighter 2, Samurai Showdown, Guilty Gear, Guilty Gear X (never did pick up X2), I found the "realisitic" fighters slow, boring and pretty clunky. I still think high-res 2D fighters are the top-tier of awesome, but that's a different style of play. Now I'm interested in Tekken 6 as well as Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection (coming on March 1st to the US PS-Store, according to IGN's release date schedule) since Virtua Fighter 5 has become my favorite PS3 game. Tekken 6 is coming to arcades this year. Namco-Bandai hasn't been really specific about it, but they're going to begin location testing before the weather gets hot. So, look around your arcades around, oh, May? In Athens, there's only one arcade in a really crummy mall and the arcade... sucks. So we'll leave it up to those of you in more popular arcade arenas to let us know how the title looks and plays.

  • Namco Vs. Sega -- the future of fighting is in your hands!

Haruki Suzaki, director of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, sat down for an interview with IGN recently. While we'd love to talk about that game, there's something else of greater interest in the interview. Something called... beautiful. By a show of hands, who here would like to play the hell out of a "Tekken vs. Virtua Fighter" title? Would they call it Namco vs. Sega? Either way, that would be a fantastic crossover idea. But is it possible?Suzaki said this about the idea: "I had the opportunity to speak with the director of Virtual Fighter on many occasions in the past and actually talk of collaboration came up again recently. Being from the same industry, this is something we definitely would like to try at least once. Looking at it from another perspective, we began to realize that it would actually be more difficult to make this happen than we first thought. More than anything, we believe this decision greatly lies in our fans. So, we would actually like to ask for our fans' opinion on this."He wants to know what we think, guys! IGN wants you to send your request for a T vs. VF to their email address and they'll forward it to Sega and Namco. I did it and you guys should too! If they did a two-man tag team style, what would your dream team be? Go, go, go! This is our chance to be heard![thank you very much, Joe!]

  • Some more Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection screens

With the release of this hotly-anticipated title coming soon for the US PlayStation Store (end of February, we're pretty sure), there's no shortage of screenshots seeping through the cracks of the internet and into our minds. We present to you a half dozen, minus one, of the latest. These screens show that, while missing that dramatic next-gen sheen many have come to expect, the game still looks darn good for a downloadable title. With 1080p and an extra character to play as (Jinpachi Mishima), this is a great "in the meantime" title as we keep our eyes peeled for Tekken 6. Speaking of fighting games... isn't Virtua Fighter 5 out today? The GameStops around here usually don't get them until the day after it's released, but let us know if you ran out and successfully grabbed your copy!

  • Tekken 6 screenshots, characters spotlighted

Honestly, I haven't been following Tekken 6 news as stringently as I probably should have. So, if the two characters highlighted on the official Tekken website aren't new or recently introduced, apologies are in order. Anyway, we have here "Zafina" and "Leo" -- the former appears to be a gypsy of sorts, the latter is a very, very effeminate guy. We think. On the website, there are a plethora of fresh screenshots and a downloadable trailer as well as wallpapers of the two characters mentioned above. Take a gander at your leisure... but... we've got another question to pose. The 3-D fighters have a tendency to blend together in the uneducated mind. Knowing this, which 3-D fighter is your favorite and why? Do you prefer using weaponry, like in Soul Calibur? Do you enjoy the realistic fighting in Virtua Fighter? How about the blatant exaggerations and bloodiness found in Mortal Kombat? Or is Tekken your flavor of choice? Let us know!

  • UK gamers about to get Conned

The Con didn't exactly generate a lot of buzz when it originally came out for the PSP in the US. It was critically panned (getting a 64 average on metacritic) and didn't develop much of a following even from early PSP adopters. Despite all this, The Con is finally coming to the UK from SouthPeak Games with enhancements. It's reported to have faster load times and an adjusted difficulty level. With Tekken: Dark Resurrection and several other fighting options like Power Stone out for the system, I'm not sure The Con still has a market, but if you are interested in getting conned, you can pick up The Con in March on UK shores. • Tekken in PS3 Store this month

Tekken Dark Resurrection plops down in North America's PlayStation Store later this month, following its debut in Asia. Namco Bandai's downloadable fighter joins Sega's disc-based Virtua Fighter 5 in the waning weeks of February, as two high-profile franchises battle for PS3 owners' idle attention. While unconfirmed, expect Tekken to be offered in the $15-20 range; VF5's gonna go for the standard $60. 1UP speculates that Namco Bandai could offer additional updates for Tekken -- like online multiplayer -- but the publisher has shot down rumors that the (initial) North American release was delayed to add new content. If you already nabbed the Asian version, no worries, you won't be missing out.

When Tekken 5 was released on the PS-Store in Japan, there were mild complaints about some scaling issues in certain levels and some texturing trouble with a few of the characters. Keeping that in mind, the announcement that the game will soon be hitting North American stores is even more exciting. Why? Well, all those kinks should be worked out. Speculation, sure, but why would such a delay have existed? You can check out some hands-on impressions if you're not sure if you want this title, but really, what else have you got until the end of March? The game sports a handful of playing modes, including the "fight money" system where your skill in the ring can buy you some bling! Wow, that was pretty lame. But it can -- in the form of teaser trailers, PS3 wallpapers, music, and more. Good stuff... look for its release later this month!

  • PSP Fan Art Fridays: Tekken

Do you want to share your PSP-related fan art? Send us an e-mail. A new piece of fan art will be shared every Friday. I've got a jonesing for more cowbell, but even more than that, I want more fan art. Luckily it's Fan Art Friday, so my needs for one of the two will be satisfied. This week we take a look at a Tekken related fan art that depicts Kazuya dealing with Heihachi the only way someone can. Paolo Diego is the creator of this fine work. I could totally picture something like this actually happening in a Tekken game. If you dig the art like I do, go check out Paolo's deviant art account. I'd write more about the piece, but it's sorta a tall work and I want it to fit on the main page for all to see. Thanks for the art Paolo! Feel free to let him know what you think and see us back here next Friday! %Gallery-3450%

  • Do PSP games on PS3 cause a threat?

    by
    Steven Bailey
    Steven Bailey
    01.14.2007

Sony seems to be having a bit of a problem. They have a portable system that is a success, but not by any means their main product. Then they have a new console that desperately needs games any way it can get them. Obviously they need to compete on the high end next gen game front, but they also need to compete against the Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade. Without the backlog of games like Nintendo or the head start of Microsoft, they seem to be turning to a questionable source for their downloadable games; the PSP. The obvious issue with PSP games going to PS3 is that it begins to negate the reasons for a consumer to own both. Sure, right now it's a Gripshift and a Tekken, but what happens if the trend just continues? Sure, this would strengthen the PlayStation Network, but at the cost of PSP exclusives. This is just not acceptable when the PSP still has a long way to go to establish itself. If Sony does insist on continuing to take games from the PSP library to the PS3, than it needs to change how it does so. Microsoft announced Live Anywhere quite some time ago, but we're still waiting for the day when we can play Xbox Live Arcade games on the go. Part of the reason is that Microsoft doesn't yet have a portable gaming system, but Sony does. Why not have it so if I download Gripshift on the PS3 I can download it to my PSP as well free as charge. For games that require progress, it would be great if I was able to share saves between my PSP and PS3. Maybe this is part of Sony's eventual plans anyway, but until I can buy Tekken on my PSP and continue it on my PS3 or vice-versa, it seems like a missed opportunity. It could just be that this is a temporary solution and as more developers jump on board the PlayStation Network, Sony will stop relying on PSP games as downloadable content. Even if this is the case though, it still seems like a dangerous road for Sony to travel. It could just be that I'm overreacting though. What do fellow PSP owners think of this development?

A Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection gameplay sequence is today's most-watched GameTrailers video. The footage of the arcade game -- turned PS3 download -- looks true to the Tekken empire, with most of its moves based loosely in reality, instead of the complete fantasy of some fighters. Do you like a real-world grounding in fighters, or would you rather the game embellish more? We think that the graphics and backgrounds look strong, but judge for yourself. • Trick Sony, download Tekken 5

GamersReports has posted a workaround for PlayStation 3 owners eager to download Tekken 5.Unless you're living in Hong Kong or Japan you're forced to wait until Sony gets around to releasing Tekken 5 in other territories ... or you could cheat the system. This trick is relatively simple, if not inherently dishonest: Create a new user (not sub-user) When entering the credit card info, pick Hong Kong as country, and then a corresponding city After account is created, select 'Add Funds' (a sub-option within 'Account Management') Add $40 (Hong Kong dollars) to your 'Wallet' twice (total should now be 80 HKD); never add more than $50 in one transaction, as this will prompt a validation of the address registered with the credit card Now go to the PlayStation Store and select Tekken 5 Opt to add more funds (bringing Wallet total to 125 HKD) Purchase and download Tekken 5 Sony is no doubt taking measures to lock out this workaround as you read this. Act now if you must. Our advice: sit patient and wait for the official worldwide releases.

  • Rumor: Tekken 6 on Xbox 360

    01.02.2007

Stirred by Sega's announcement of an Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5, comes rumor that Tekken 6 is also bound for Microsoft's console. The source of the rumor is the same anonymous "IGN insider" who has been apparently credited with breaking the Virtua Fighter 5 news before Sega confirmed it. If his latest spill proves valid, expect Namco Bandai's next Tekken on 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year. There is no indication that this multiplatform initiative would extend to the recently released downloadable version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, which looks to remain a PS3 exclusive. While console versions of the Tekken series have traditionally be reserved for Sony platforms, Tekken 3 was eventually released for Dreamcast Tekken 3 was emulated on Dreamcast; and Tekken Advance was specifically designed and released for Game Boy Advance. If Tekken 6 does land on Xbox 360, the move is not unprecedented.

  • Rumor of the day: Tekken 6 for 360 [update 1]

    01.02.2007

Coming from several different sources is yet another rumor that a major PS3 exclusive is going to jump ship. This time it's the perennial combo crunching fighter, Tekken 6. Furthermore, Namco is already working on the title, and it will be available just after the PS3 version. Though Virtua Fighter 5 is nothing to sneeze at, industry watchers will know that Tekken is Sony's big name fighting franchise. Since its inception, no Tekken game has graced a non-Sony console, with the minor exception of Tekken Advance on the GBA. The info comes from an anonymous tipster at IGN -- supposedly the same person who leaked the Virtua Fighter 5 info. Could it be true? Company loyalty tells us no, but financial logic tells us yes. Namco brought Soul Calibur II to multiple platforms, only to have Sony snag exclusivity for Soul Calibur III. We're betting that Namco made a lot more money with Soul Calibur II (we're sure Link helped with that). Honestly, if Sony can't get PS3s into people's homes, publisher have no choice but to go multiplatform. This rumor is still tenuous for now, but it wouldn't surprise us if it was true.[Via PS3 Fanboy]Update: Reader, tpudd, reminds us that there was in fact one non-Sony Tekken game, Tekken Advance for the GBA.

  • Tekken 6 going to the 360? Still a rumor, but probably

Goodness! Fighting games seem to be the popular franchises to port lately. What with the recent announcement that Virtua Fighter 5 is headed for the 360, this is almost painful -- Tekken was a staple of PlayStation-ology, always dependable for a great fight on a great console. Let's not confuse this with the false rumors of Metal Gear Solid 4 and Devil May Cry 4 losing exclusivity -- those still stand, but who knows for how long. However, this rumor is still just that and shouldn't be celebrated yet. The rumor stems from the same "source" (of course they're anonymous, or else they'd have to answer to the company for spreading rumors or they'd take the heat from bloggers, etc for dishing out BS knowledge) who leaked the Virtua Fighter 5 info, so it's partially credible. However, they might just want to cause a stir. I would.

If you've got access to the Japanese or Hong Kong PlayStation Store, you may have noticed a nice little surprise: Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection has appeared for download. The game boasts a few nice features -- full 1080p visuals, the boss Jinpachi as a playable character, extra play modes and more. The download is around 830 MB and requires about 1.5 MB of save space. The cost? Sorry guys, this one isn't free, but comparing it to the cost of a new game, putting you back only $17 is a gift. This will eventually slide into the US store, but if you know the tricks of the trade, you can get it now. Enjoy.

  • Tekken 5 on PS3 PlayStation Store in Japan, Hong Kong

    12.27.2006

Less than a month after a downloadable version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection was announced for PlayStation 3, Namco Bandai's fighter has belly-flopped onto PlayStation Store in Japan (¥2000; $16.85) and Hong Kong ($125HK; $16.07). And it's a beast, weighing in at 830MB; well exceeding the arbitrary limit proposed last month. But Sony's done it, introducing the first full-featured digital distribution title to consoles. Sure, certain Xbox Live games could be just as valuable (if not more so) to the on-demand movement, but let's not downplay Sony's achievement. This is exactly the sort of move that will pressure Microsoft to give up on its enforced 50MB Live Arcade size limit. The hefty HD version of Tekken 5 includes arcade battle, ghost battle, and offline versus modes, in addition to an artwork and video gallery. Final boss Jinpachi Mishima has also been made playable. No word on the inevitable North American release.

I reported earlier that Tekken: Dark Resurrection would appear on PlayStation 3 as a downloadable title via the PlayStation Store. It looks like the game's finally out... in Japan. The monstrous 830MB download features all the functionality of the PSP version of the game, such as ghost battling, but now comes in glorious 1080P full-HD. To add insult to injury, there's multiplayer included (no need for multiple machines and discs!), and the cost: a measly 2000 yen ($17).Some of you disagreed with my prediction that the PS3 version would be cheaper. Looks like Sony's trend is to release PSP games... and then make them better and cheaper on the PS3. Does that sound fair to you?[Via Joystiq]
