After the Great Terror Wars, governments fell ... Seven corporations rose from the ashes to rule all men ... Together they were known as The Iron Fist ... The mightiest of which was ... TekkenThat's the tag line featured above a metallic, bloody capital 'T' for the Tekken movie, revealed via ComingSoon.Net. Can't you just feel the drama building through the indulgent use of ellipses? The film news site also revealed that production on the Onimusha adaptation is expected to begin in April 2008, with Silent Hill director Christophe Gans at the helm. Despite a bashing from critics, the Silent Hill film managed to gross $97 million worldwide. Will Gans be able to attract that big of an audience again? He might need a helping hand from the writers who developed the seminal Tekken movie poster ...

  • New Tekken 6 screens prove progress is positive

Curious to see how the latest arcade brawler is shaping up for its console release late next year? We're sure you are! We've gotten a hold of some of the latest screenshots and we're surprised at how far the game has come along. Everything looks fantastic, but there is one problem -- we want to see it in action. As awesome as any screenshots are, it's nothing compared to watching those stills come to life and beat each other silly. The ground textures need a little work in a few of the stages, but since the game hasn't hit the final stretch by any means, we're not too concerned that kind of thing will get overlooked. Enjoy the new screenshots in our gallery, or if you can't figure out which are new, head over to the official Tekken website. %Gallery-3634%

  • Tekken 5 online add-on in the PSN store

If you've been in Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection training since earlier this year (aren't your thumbs sore?), you can finally put your skills to the test with the rest of the world now that an online pack for the game has been released on the North American PlayStation Network store. You can buy it separately for $10, or, if you've been holding out, you can buy it and the game in a bundle for $30. We've made it clear in the past that we think pretty highly of Xbox Live, but this week, between this Tekken 5 upgrade, Puzzle Fighter, three new demos and Warhawk, Sony's making it pretty clear that their online offering shouldn't be counted out, no matter what state Home might be in. [Thanks, Jamie]

  • New Tekken 6 character revealed -- Bob

Bob is a martial arts genius. When he was a bit younger, he had a handsome face and a toned body that complimented this fighting intelligence perfectly. You could say, in Tekken 6, he would have blended right in with many of the other male fighters. But Bob ran into a problem -- he couldn't beat any opponents "larger" than he. So, he decided to take a few years off the fighting circuit and "train" himself to become larger than any opponent. Thus, Bob went on the "all donut all the time" diet and grew rotund enough to take out anyone. Tekken 6 is getting a pretty colorful cast of characters, no? This new scan talks about Bob, the newest revealed character, as well as mentioning that a media showing in mid-September will have the latest build of the game playable in Japan. Or something. We can't read Japanese too well. Either way, we're glad to see the cast of one of the biggest fighting game continue to grow.

Meanwhile, in Tokyo, Arcadia's annual fighting game tournament has begun. Tougeki -- better known as Super Battle Opera -- can easily be considered the world cup of fighting games, drawing competitors from all over the world and for a variety of different titles. This years line-up consists of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Hyper Anniversary, King of Fighters 98, Melty Blood: Act Cadenza, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core, Arcana Heart, Virtua Fighter 5, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and Soul Calibur III: Arcade Edition."Competitive gaming" may be a dirty word to some, but unlike the spoiled brats that make up the "professional" scene, the players of the fighting game community tend to keep it real with no sponsors to foot their bills or debatable endorsements to pimp out. The players that make up Team USA are the winners of this years EVO regional tournaments. Their reward? A trip to Japan to compete in SBO and a chance to bring it to them before they bring it back to us later this month at the EVO world finals. We're rooting for you, boys.Today's videos are the 2006 finals for some of the returning Super Battle Opera games. Enjoy!

The fantastic PSN title, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is going online in Japan next week and is expected to be released in the weeks following for North America as well. While the update will cost $9.99, it adds a pretty substantial amount of content. Most obvious is the ability to play online with friends and compete in online tournaments, but they've also added a dojo mode for practice as well as the ever popular Survival mode. To show off the new features, Namco released a ton of screenshots from the American release of the Tekken 5 online expansion. Check them out! %Gallery-5298%

Companies are finally jumping on the online PS3 bandwagon. Virtua Fighter 5 disappointed many PS3 fans when its online component was revealed ... exclusively for Xbox 360. Sony supporters cried in outrage as it appeared that developers were not taking advantage of the system's online capabilities. Thankfully, it looks like those dark days are over. Two huge PlayStation franchises now have confirmed online play: Metal Gear Solid and Tekken. Like Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, the upcoming PS3-exclusive Tekken 6 will feature versus matches over the internet. That's supposedly only the first of a long list of online features -- don't be surprised if Namco Bandai adds online leaderboards to the final game. Metal Gear Solid will also be going online on PS3, but how exactly is still unclear at the moment. Could the recently disconnected Metal Gear Online come back as a PlayStation downloadable title? Or, will an online mode be added to Metal Gear Solid 4? Hopefully, we'll find out more at next week's Metal Gear 20th Anniversary event.

The upcoming online update to TEKKEN 5: Dark Resurrection will cost $9.99. The update, which will be available later this year, will include Opti Match, Quick Match, Custom Match and Friend Match, "making it easy to find opponents to fight with anywhere, anytime." While waiting for their turn to battle, players will also be able to study their opponents by watching battles in the lobby. Online will also include two new single player modes, including Practice mode and Survival mode. A new Online News Ticker will post the weekly, monthly and overall rank leaders at any given point. According to the press release, "Players will fight their way to the deadly Dark Lord to prove that they are worthy of battling it out in the online TEKKEN ranking." Whatever that means. "It is beyond words how excited we are to finally be bringing our famous fighting franchise, TEKKEN, online for the first time," Makoto Iwai, Senior Vice President and COO of NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. said. "Not only is TEKKEN 5: Dark Resurrection Online a great value, but it now features the largest evolution in the franchise to date."

The Japanese version of Tekken 5: Dark Ressurection for PlayStation 3 will soon have online multiplayer, but it's going to cost you a bit extra. The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu reports that T5: DR Online will feature free online multiplayer with a ranking system, practice mode and survival mode. The game will cost 2,800 yen (about US $23), or 1,000 yen (US $8) for current owners of the game to upgrade. Since the game initially came out for 2,000 yen, early adopters are paying 200 yen extra for the time they've had with the offline title since its release in late December. No release date has been decided for the upgrade, and no word at all on a release outside of Japan.

Here's a tasty bit of news that should have fighting enthusiasts drooling at the mouth, mostly because we've yet to get a great online fighting experience on the PS3. Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is going to have an update soon that allows for online play! In addition to standard fighting online, there will also be online rankings to show off your mad skills. If you haven't played in a while or are unfamiliar with the combo system, the new Practice mode should help get your online ranking up a little faster -- because you'll train and get better. There's also the addition of Survival mode, adding in yet another option to an already worthwhile purchase from the PS Store. However, these additions aren't free. To get all this stuff tacked on, you may be charged anywhere from 1,000 - 2,800 yen. We're estimating for the Americas that our addition will come around $7.99 - $9.99, but those are just guesses. What do you guys think? Is it worth the extra output for a lot of extra input content?

Jeanne d'Arc will be re-released on July 5th, and Tekken: Dark Resurrection will come a week after. A long while back, we talked about a new character entering the Tekken 6 arena: Miguel, a matador of sorts. Since then, a lot of fancy new screenshots have been thrown up detailing some of the other characters. Not just screenshots, but some pieces of CG artwork have made their way across the series of tubes we call the internet. Included in the gallery below are a bunch of in-game stills featuring ladies in provocative clothing, but there are other shots hovering around the web of equal awesomeness. Check out the gallery, enjoy, and tell us which character you are the absolute master of. It has been said that Tekken 6 will have the largest cast in the series' history. Plan to test out any of the new characters, or will you stick with your old favorite? %Gallery-3634% [via Joystiq]

  • Tekken 6 scans from Famitsu show new matador fighter

Today, NeoGAF member neo2046 uploaded, out of the kindness of his/her own heart, the latest scans from Japanese magazine Famitsu regarding the hotly anticipated (but strangely forgotten about) fighting game Tekken 6. What do we have to show for it? A couple of impressive screenshots, despite the magazine transfer undoubtedly holding back the "ooh-aah" potential. There's also a new character introduced, it seems. A matador makes his debut in these scans. You've got to admit though, the way he's looking at the reader is very sexy, as we'd expect from a matador! We're kidding, of course. We can't read his name since we're ignorant, but the alternate costume right above him seems pretty cool. Hopefully he'll play decently. The second page holds pictures of the other two new characters, but that's nothing new. In any case, check out the scans and let us know what you think!

Tekken: Dark Resurrection has been an overwhelming success on PSP, selling over a million copies since its release according to Gamasutra. The title's selling power has been so significant that it's become the second best-selling title for Namco Bandai in the past fiscal year. The only other title to beat it was Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for PlayStation 2. Hopefully, the rampant success of Namco's fighter on PSP will make it consider bringing one of its other high-profile fighting franchises to the platform. [Via PS3 Fanboy]

A handful of new Tekken 6 scans have popped up online for your perusal. Taken from a Japanese magazine, the quality of the scans isn't fantastic, but they are good enough to show off some nice lighting and texture detail. We also get a peek at Yoshimitsu's new design. Everybody's philanthropic robot is looking a lot more dark and evil these days. Maybe he didn't like getting shot in the face in Bryan's Tekken 5 end-game cinematic...

  • PSP price drop extends to Europe on May 4th

The price of a PSP in Europe is set to be violently assaulted with a sharp object next month, when Sony plans to slash at it wildly in the hopes of trimming a few pounds. And Euros, obviously, but as with the US price drop earlier this month, that particular currency simply doesn't suit the rapid weight loss imagery we're going for.A report on GamesIndustry.Biz indicates that the retail price of the PlayStation puny will drop by £20 in the UK to £129.99 on 4 May. The rest of the continent will pay €169.99 following a drop of €30. The change in price will be accompanied by a cheaper £14.99 tag for Platinum titles, with Ridge Racer 2, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, Killzone: Liberation, LocoRoco and Moto GP all being included in the range and fighting against the argument that the system doesn't have any games.

  • More developers talk about PSP's future

IGN is continuing their PSP retrospective feature by speaking with even more developers. They approached EA's Team Fusion, one of the most prolific PSP developers out there. What's the one feature of PSP they'd like to use more often? PSP fans will agree with their answer: "For my own team, I think there's a lot of value in further exploring game sharing and downloadable demos for the PSP. We recently released EA's first ever downloadable demo for the PSP in Europe (Medal of Honor Heroes) and the response has been really positive. It's an excellent game and the demo allows new users to try it out and experience a taste for themselves."Namco's Tekken team was also interviewed. They'd love to see Sony make a true system-defining game for PSP: "If Sony could take the lead by creating a defining, exceptional PSP game, I believe that it would become easier for all developers to create new titles. It would also be desirable if SCE's processes were the same worldwide so that it would be easier to execute simultaneous releases."

  • Namco Bandai plots a cell-processor driven arcade board

    by

    03.26.2007

Namco Bandai has recently announced that they plan to create a set of arcade games using none other than the PlayStation 3's Cell processor. In fact, the arcade machines are supposed to use the same Nvidia designed RSX graphics chips as the PS3 -- making conversions later on that much easier. Like Tekken 6. Oh, yeah. According to Gamasutra, this will be the first time the Cell processor will be used in a consumer product other than the PlayStation 3. That's pretty cool, especially the notion that it'll decrease the time needed to get the game put onto a home console, into eagerly awaiting hands. Now if only we could get all of our consumer electronics outfitted with the Cell and somehow make the PS3 and everything else wirelessly talk to one another. Completely useless and unnecessary, sure, but that'd be pretty crazy to go out with a camcorder (or whatever you kids call 'em these days) and have it streaming real-time on the PS3, possibly on a YouTube-ish website. As we said, completely useless, but hey. Random ideas are fun.
