Namco announces 2.5 million shipped copies of Tekken 6

Namco Bandai sent out a press release today boasting that it has shipped over 2.5 million copies of Tekken 6 worldwide. Now, we don't want to tell Namco how to do its job, but these shipment numbers tend to be more impressive when you give the game a week or so in stores, so we can more readily infer a connection between shipped copies and sold copies. The portion of those 2.5 million earmarked for Europe, for example, just got there today, and it's only been in stores for around two days in North America. All we know based on this is that Namco expects to sell a ton of copies, not that it is selling a ton. Although we're sure it will. Maybe that's the idea -- to build excitement about Tekken 6 by showing how confident the publisher is. To print up 2.5 million of the things (some of which come in totally huge boxes), Namco must really believe it's on to something! %Gallery-70500%

While some of us still think there's no way that Tekken 6 for the PSP will release alongside its console counterparts, Namco is sticking to its guns on the October 27 release. And so the publisher has unleashed an alarming amount of media for the PSP port, including two new trailers that show off the first in-game footage and a host of new screens. Hit up the gallery below for the screens and head past the break for the second trailer.Oh, and yes, Alisa totally took off her head and smacked Eddy with it. Tekken 6 trailer doles out story, Scenario Mode, no sense

We're just going to lay it down right here: We have no idea what's going on in this Tekken 6 trailer from GamesCom. There's something about a (possibly evil) corporation and there's some other company, and one of them declares war on the world. Somehow, this results in a fighting tournament ... we think. There's also a bear-God-thing, a dragon, a mech and ... was that a panda? (At least we've been able to pinpoint the Scenario Mode, a 3D beat-em-up of sorts, spliced into the footage. See it?) After you've scratched your head bald puzzling over the trailer above, check out some new screens in the gallery below: %Gallery-70500%

At $150 -- including a copy of Tekken 6, mind you -- Hori's upcoming arcade sticks for the fighter's sixth iteration look to be a pretty decent deal for those of you still interested in picking up a fighting stick. Coming straight out of Namco's conference at GamesCom, we were given an opportunity to check out the Tekken 6 arcade stick. Lucky you, we've also snapped a few pics and added them to the gallery you see below. Let the ogling begin!%Gallery-70479%

Listen, we were going to try and come up with a clever headline for this post ("Tekken 6 videos pull no punches!" or "PETA to protest video featuring brutal Jaguar-Man violence" were a few notable options) but we've decided to simply call it what it is: A hell of a lot of content from Namco's upcoming brawler. Like, a whole lot. Like, three brief gameplay videos (two of which are posted after the break) and a gallery of 15 new screenshots. Now that we think about it, we kinda wish we would have gone with that PETA headline. Oh well! Nothing we can do about it now. This post is already out there, ready for your consumption. We'll try to remember to use it for our next Tekken 6 media dump.%Gallery-69621%

  • Tekken 6 PSP will feature downloadable content

The PSP version of Tekken 6 is going to have all the bells and whistles of its PS3 and Xbox 360 counterpart. At least, that's what Namco Bandai's public relations manager wants you to believe. Arne Cual-Pedroso told Siliconera that "pretty much everything in the console version will be in the PSP." And that includes downloadable content.Namco Bandai is notorious amongst console gamers for its ridiculous abuse of DLC: Ace Combat, for example, featured over $200 worth of DLC. Another Namco PSP game, Idolmaster, features over $100 worth of DLC already. We're not sure exactly what Namco Bandai has in mind for Tekken 6, but handheld owners may feel the wrath of DLC very soon.

While we were already aware of some Penny Arcade / Tekken 6 cross-pollination, we didn't realize how far it went. In addition to Penny Arcade's fabled Cardboard Tube Samurai appearing in Namco's upcoming fighter, it looks like Gabe and Tycho have created a comic for the game as well. The first page of the comic is available now and we can safely say that you don't have to know anything about the Tekken storyline to enjoy it.If you're like us -- always amazed that fighting games have story lines -- that's a good thing. All you need to know is that someone made an army of kangaroos and Jin Kazama Kazuya Mishima isn't happy about it. Enjoy.

  • Namco's iPhone division considering... Tekken?

Actually, I'd play that. Namco recently announced that they were forming an Apple Games division to head up game development for Apple platforms like the iPhone, and in this interview, a producer for them who used to work for Apple says that they're excited to work on bringing great games to the handheld device. Like, for example, Pac-man, Galaga, and... Soulcaliber and Tekken. You heard that right -- fighting games haven't exactly made a splash on the iPhone, as they're primarily a button-based genre, and the iPhone, of course, has no buttons. But that won't stop Namco's guy from putting the old head gears into motion: "It's just the controls that are a challenge. We are thinking about that." Think away, crazy man -- I'd love to pull out Yoshimitsu for a few rounds while waiting at a bus stop. Obviously, the easiest way to try and port these would be to put overlaid buttons on the screen, but that doesn't leave a lot of room for the fighting (and not having the tactile feedback would probably be a problem as well). Maybe some gesture-based accelerometer movement? Sky's the limit, right?. Your call, Namco -- can't wait to see what you come up with.[via Joystiq]

  • Namco considering Tekken, Soulcalibur for iPhone

Namco Bandai is making a push to capitalize on the iPhone gaming "gold rush," as evidenced by the recent opening of its new Apple Games division. In an interview with Kotaku, Apple Games' recently ordained manager, Jonathan Kromrey, explained exactly how the company was going to win over the mobile gaming crowd -- by bringing arcade heavyweights "like Pac-Man, Galaga, Soulcalibur and Tekken" to Apple's handheld device.Of course, those last two carry with them a substantial barrier: The iPhone and iPod Touch's limited control capabilities. Kromrey explained that Namco was "thinking about" how to make the brawlers work without a controller. We suggest some sort of voice control scheme, but only because we think it'll result in some hilariously awkward subway rides. "Punch! Punch! Kick! Punch! Block! Spinning Frankensteiner!"

Tekken 6 continues to expand its repertoire of manga-inspired special costumes. Masashi Kishimoto, creator of Naruto, is collaborating with Namco Bandai by creating an alternate outfit for Lars (seen above). This is the second costume from a famous mangaka for Tekken 6, the first being CLAMP's design for Jin.In addition to Kishimoto's outfit, Tekken 6 will also feature an alternate costume for Zafina designed by Mutsumi Inomata, character designer of Tales of Destiny and Tales of Graces (after the break). While some were afraid these costumes would remain a strictly Japan-only affair, Siliconera reports that all three of the special costumes revealed so far will be available in the US version as well when it launches on October 27th.

Got a knack for fighting titles? Have a particular fondness for Tekken? If so, you definitely shouldn't be playing with a stock controller, and that's exactly why Hori has crafted the beauty you're inevitably peering at above. The stick, which will ship as part of a Tekken 6 Wireless Fight Stick Bundle bundle, will be made available soon for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (shown after the break), and according to our pals over at Joystiq, it'll be on sale at a variety of respected retailers for $150. Said MSRP also includes a collectible art book and a pinch of pride, which totally justifies the somewhat steep asking price. Right? Right.

Picked up by way of the Gamertag Radio forums from the alleged Twitter account of Tekken 6 -- we know, we know -- it was confirmed this afternoon that the image you see above of Penny Arcade's Cardboard Tube Samurai is, in fact, the real deal. Where, you ask? Well, of course, Mike "Gabe" Krahulik's Twitter account, where he twote, "Yes this is for real. Cts costume will be in Tekken 6!" He is, of course, referring to the Cardboard Tube Samurai and probably not the cartoon time-traveling simulator we already know will include everything in the universe. Take a look after the break for the exciting Twitter snapshot where Gabe revealed the truth.

Tekken 6 continues to get more bizarre. Famed all-female mangaka group CLAMP (known for Cardcaptor Sakura, X/1999, xxxHolic, Code Geass) is designing new costume designs for Namco Bandai's upcoming fighter. Here, we see Jin wearing a wardrobe that would fit perfectly in CLAMP's Tsubasa Chronicle.Obviously, the addition of one of the most popular shoujo groups in Japan is meant to increase Tekken's appeal beyond male gamers. In fact, the high-pitched ringing you may be hearing right now is the sound of thousands of anime fan girls squeeing in unison whilst holding onto Kero-chan plushies.

We don't know what's taken Namco so long to bring Tekken 6 home -- it was released in arcades November 2007, for crying out loud -- but we can finally say, after a not-really-all-that-unexpected announcement that the game would be appearing on Xbox 360 as well as PlayStation 3 and seeing loads of screenshots of the console version, we've finally played it. On a real, honest-to-goodness PS3. (We checked to make sure the cables weren't running to a hidden arcade cabinet.)This was our first experience with the game, not having access to an arcade willing to shell out beaucoup bucks for a machine. But we'd played enough Tekken in the past (most recently, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection on PS3) to be able to get a feel for this new installment. So, what makes it worthy of being one more than five? find out after the break!%Gallery-51403%

Not only will the PSP version launch alongside the console versions, it will feature exclusive content, such as additional items and stages. Tekken 6 will also feature a "Ghost" Infrastructure mode, which allows players to download and share character data to compete against. It's great to see Namco Bandai throw PSP some support. So long as the team can match the high standards of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, PSP fans have a lot to look forward to.[Thanks, Jay!]

After watching this Xbox Live-exclusive trailer for Tekken 6, we've come to realize a few things. For one, Paul Phoenix is still the most badass dude ever. Don't argue, you'll lose. Second, someone at Namco-Bandai should really proofread subtitles before they dish out a trailer, because there's a pretty hilarious bit of mangled English in the beginning.
