The next major MMO from Cryptic Studios is Star Trek Online, which may bridge the gap in sci-fi MMOs between ship-based combat and avatar interaction on planetary surfaces. Cryptic has been releasing new screenshots and talking quite a bit about character progression lately, but sometimes it's better to show than to tell. That's what they're doing with the latest game trailer showing off footage of conflicts in space and planetary environments your away teams will explore. The Star Trek Online cinematic war trailer at GameVideos gives some background on the STO setting along with the requisite phaser fire, Borg cubes, and bridges boarded. We've got the latest Star Trek Online footage embedded for you, so stick with us after the cut.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic fills up the city planet

Think for a minute about what it means to have a city taking up an entire planet. No, really, think about it. Think about the scope involved, the huge numbers of people involved, the sheer scale of any kind of project or even the most humble buildings. It's a massively dwarfing concept, which makes it all the more interesting to see the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic which discusses the creation of Coruscant, capital of the Republic and home to a single, massive city.In the trailer, the designers mention many of the issues that they faced with designing the planet, chief among them the absolute lack of any terrain on the planet due to its nature and the difficulty of relating it to real-life places and things. It also discusses the events that lead into the beginning of Star Wars: The Old Republic -- the Sith sacking of Coruscant that leaves some portions of the planet still damaged and rebuilding. Coruscant is being set up to help establish the role of the Republic and the Jedi in the larger galaxy, a symbol of everything positive in the galaxy. We also see still more vistas of the city, which retain the polish that Bioware has been long known for.On the very real chance you're hungry for more visions of the universe after the trailer, the latest installment of Threat of Peace has also been added to the site. But that's only enough to whet our appetites for what's shaping up to be a truly massive and immersive game.

  • DUST 514 trailer released

EVE Online creators CCP Games made quite a stir when they announced the console title DUST 514 in August. It's one of the more ambitious game concepts we've heard about in quite a while. A ground based console MMO that ties in with EVE Online? Two separate games, one setting and one community? (The game's tagline is "ONE UNIVERSE // ONE WAR".) There are so many questions that remain unanswered about how DUST mercenaries will interact with and affect EVE's capsuleers, but a more immediate question is, "How does it look so far?" Unless you were actually in Cologne to see CCP's DUST 514 reveal at GDC Europe, it's likely all you've had to base your impressions off of was a somewhat blurry video capture of the presentation. That is, until now. CCP's released the GDC Europe DUST 514 trailer and it's good to see a crisp version of that footage. The trailer shows how the conflict between EVE's Caldari and Gallente races plays out on the ground on the Gallente planet Intaki V. It gives us a look at War Barge interiors, Mobile Command Centers (MCC) floating over what is now a war-torn Intaki homeworld, and some of the ground and air vehicles that DUST 514 players will put to use. We've got an embed of that video, so stick with us after the jump for a look at DUST 514.

  • Machinarium has become too gorgeous

You see, Amanita Design? You see what happens? You have a game like Machinarium that looks amazing and you have to keep pushing it, keep making it more beautiful and now ... now, it's so attractive that we're frightened of it. We're like cavemen encountering a time-traveling Swivel Sweeper, desperately swinging at it with our clubs, trying to snuff out the dark magic inside it. We've been driven utterly mad with desire, and it's all your fault: You were so preoccupied with whether or not you could, you didn't stop to think if you should. No, but seriously, watch the trailer after the break that SideQuesting brought to our attention. It looks crazy good, right?

Despite what Professor Layton would have you believe, every puzzle does not, necessarily, have an answer. For instance, if we were to ask you how much we want to watch the Professor Layton movie advertised by the trailer after the break, and you would attempt to answer with any of the many English words you have learned since birth, you would fall short of capturing our enthusiasm. No, we would have to invent an entirely new word for our adoration, say ... blujargin, or krunksable, and that would hardly be fair to the guesser, would it?[Via Siliconera]

  • Fallen Earth sniper trailer shows that 'life is cheap, bullets are expensive'

Fallen Earth is an upcoming post-apocalyptic MMO that will take place in a near-future setting, one ravaged by nuclear war and viral epidemic, sparsely populated by a factionalized society of survivors. Although the game is still in beta, the Fallen Earth team has been stepping up their game trailer releases and the latest introduces us to a mercenary of sorts. The video shows us the lengths (or depths) a person will go to for a handful of irradiated squash: stabbings, beatings, and for the sake of expediency, sniper headshots. Still, in Fallen Earth, "life is cheap, bullets are expensive" and the video aims to show us more of the game's harsh setting. Stick with us after the jump for a look at the latest HD video from Fallen Earth:

We'll admit, we were starting to get a little worried about Brutal Legend after Activision sued to stop the sale of the game last week. But after watching this new trailer for the game (entitled "Rock Gods") we find that our faith has been renewed.Seriously, look at the thing! Look at how hard the game is rocking! You think mere lawyers can stop a game like that? ... No, we thought not.

Sure, it's a little distracting that EA decided to blur the mild nudity in the new trailer for Pandemic's The Saboteur. But thanks to a great soundtrack, our distrust of the exposed female anatomy and a bizarre fetish for things that are mostly but not entirely black-and-white, we still find the clip to be highly, highly erotic.... We mean cool. Did we say erotic? No, no. Cool. That's what we meant.

  • See Gladiator A.D. in bloody action

We know that it's not fair to pass judgment on a game when its at an early stage of development, but we're having a problem with this first trailer for High Voltage's new Gladiator A.D. Namely: It doesn't look very good. It's not that it doesn't look fun, there's no way of knowing that, but it just looks really ... homely. We're going to cross out fingers and hope that this is just a super-early clip and the finished product is going to knock our sandals off in Q1 of 2010. Agreed?

  • Samsung's B-7000 LCD treating owners to trippy visuals? UPDATE: Samsung responds

Samsung's UN-B7000 LCD HDTV hits all the right style checkmarks, with edge-mounted LEDs handling the backlighting and the Touch of Color fascia. The review unit at FlatpanelsHD even managed to score pretty high marks in color accuracy, even illumination and black levels. Unfortunately, a nasty "trailing" effect showed up on the 46-inch model when viewing fast-moving objects and totally ruined the party. Credit the reviewer for trying different settings and upgrading the firmware to get rid of the problem, but to no avail. Chime in below and let us know if you've seen this same behavior, or if the reviewer just got a bad unit; unless your TV-viewing habits include a square of blotter paper, of course.UPDATE: Samsung has told us that any of the "trailer" visuals are not an artifact of the set. A run through our own comments and various internet message boards does not turn up any consistent complaints about these motion blur-type problems, either. If you're a fan of machinima, films made using video game graphics engines, there's a good chance you've heard about Clear Skies, an imaginative blend of EVE Online's far future setting with Half-Life 2 character models. Massively has taken a good look at Clear Skies in the past and had the opportunity to speak with the film's creator, Ian Chisholm, about what he has in store for us with Clear Skies 2. However, rather than just reading more about it, why not check out the trailer? We've got an embed of the full Clear Skies 2 trailer for you below the cut. Enjoy!

  • Black Prophecy trailer offers a first look at gameplay experience

The brave new world of sci-fi MMOs is fast approaching. At this rate, it won't be long before science fiction and post-apocalyptic themed games are as ubiquitous as fantasy titles in the MMO marketplace. Among the space-based titles that will be gunning for your play time is Black Prophecy, in development at Reakktor Media. They announced today that the Black Prophecy community forums are now open and released a gameplay trailer as well. We expected the trailer to be a flashy collection of aggressive footage cuts, but what we see is actually rather refreshing, in that it's a more accurate representation of what it'll be like to play Black Prophecy. It starts off with the login screen and progresses through some of the gameplay elements from the perspective of a pilot, switching between the standard third-person MMO view and a first-person cockpit view of the action. The trailer also shows off some interesting aspects to combat such as the ability to target specific areas of large vessels and of course the various ship modifications players can make. You can download the high def version from Reakktor which clocks in at a hefty 443 mb, but we've also got the gameplay trailer embedded for you below, best viewed in fullscreen HD. If you've been wondering how Black Prophecy might compare to other space-themed MMOs already established in the market or upcoming titles like Jumpgate Evolution, the gameplay trailer should give you an accurate picture of where the title is in terms of development.

Among the upcoming sci-fi MMO releases we're curious about is Black Prophecy, a title in development at Reakktor Media in Germany. Black Prophecy's backdrop is a far future setting where conflict rages between humanity's two evolutionary offshoots; the biologically-superior Genides wage war against the technologically-superior Tyi. Each opposed faction threatens to wipe out the existence of their rival, but both the Genides and Tyi now face a greater common threat, the ancient Restorer alien race. Reakktor released a cinematic trailer for Black Prophecy today that shows off aggressive fleet battles and new ship designs, while giving us a closer look at the Restorers. We've got a YouTube embed of the Black Prophecy cinematic trailer for you below, best viewed in fullscreen HD:%Gallery-46991%

    03.24.2009

The massively multiplayer online game industry will soon be getting an influx of space-based science fiction titles as well as earthbound post-apocalytic MMOs. Another new realm that is going to be explored by game developers like Vogster Entertainment is the urban crime MMO. Their debut massively multiplayer title will be CrimeCraft. We don't have many details on the game beyond the trailer they released and the info they've published so far on their site, but we do know that it's a persistent world 'next-gen' shooter built on the Unreal 3 engine. We've found another glimpse into what Vogster has been up to, though. IGN Videos has a (very) brief trailer showing the CrimeCraft characters with narration explaining obtaining and modifying your weapons. We weren't inspired enough by the trailer to commit crimes of our own by stealing and embedding it for you here, so you'll have to head over to IGN to check out the video footage. We're hoping to speak with Vogster at GDC this week and find out more about this title, so keep your eyes open for more on this urban crime MMO.

    03.07.2009

CCP Games just dropped the trailer for EVE Online's Apocrypha expansion, which sets the tone for the storyline players will soon experience. The trailer depicts a cataclysmic event which creates rifts in space-time throughout the New Eden galaxy, affecting all of the races. We see fleets of ships investigating the anomalies and take their first journeys through wormholes, emerging in unknown space. There, the explorers find bizarre structures whose design is unknown to New Eden's races. These space stations house the technology behind Tech III, advanced modular ship designs, but seizing technology potentially thousands of years beyond that of the capsuleers awakens long-dormant defenses: the drones of the ancient Sleeper race. We've got the YouTube embed of the Apocrypha trailer in HD for you below the cut.

    02.16.2009

Facebook users got a first look at the in-game video opening for EVE Online's next expansion, Apocrypha, earlier today. The narration explains a fundamental aspect of the game's lore, that as a capsuleer in EVE, you're essentially an immortal and often viewed as a demigod. But in the game's setting of New Eden, you're faced with others of your caliber, individuals as driven to succeed and rule as you are. No further details about the new features in Apocrypha are revealed in the video, aside from a superimposed iris and wormhole. Unfortunately a download or embed isn't available at the time of writing, but a working cut of the footage can be viewed on the EVE Online Facebook page.

The live-action Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers ads have taken a unique and creative approach to game advertising. Trailers tend to be totally dry affairs stitched together from in-game CG and occasional gameplay, but D3 decided to indulge in ridiculous skits set in a world where zombies live alongside humans, and suffer discrimination (or worse) just for eating people being different.Did you find the ads funny? Did they affect your opinion about the game at all? And even if you didn't necessarily dig these particular skits, do you think publishers would do well to explore this kind of content as a break from the usual trailer format?%Gallery-28067%

  • Watch these Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII trailers while you still can

Oh, you still haven't seen the latest trailers for Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII? Man, we thought everyone had seen those old things by now. We guess you weren't hip enough to get into Square Enix's "Closed Theater" at the Tokyo Game Show earlier this year. Well, no worries -- said trailers were recently released on the Re: Final Fantasy XIII DVD and, following Newton's Fourth Law of Gaming Media Distribution, were unceremoniously ripped off their discs and launched into the internet. For as long as they remain unmoderated, we've got both posted after the break. Just make sure you're wearing appropriate protective eyewear, as many of you may find them eye-meltingly gorgeous.
